ST. JOHNS — Join the “Undy 500.” You may be asking yourself, “What is the Undy 500?” It’s an effort by the Clinton County Great Start Parent Coalition to collect at least 500 pairs of new underwear and socks for the annual Project Connect / Back to School event coming Aug. 31. New underwear and socks in any size is wel-

come and can be dropped off at the Clinton County 4-H Fair, Aug. 1-5. Project Connect is a one-day event designed to connect families and individuals in need with available resources, all in one convenient location. Part of event includes providing families in need with the goods and services needed for a successful start to the school year. Undy 500 was created in hopes of collecting enough new underwear and socks

for every individual who attends Project Connect. To make it easy for people to contribute, Undy 500 collection boxes will be placed at the Clinton County 4-H Fair Aug. 1-5. “We want to try to prepare families for back to school the best we can,” said Maria Cook, parent coordinator for the Great Start Parent Coalition. ummer breezes will carry the sound of light classical and popular music when the Mid-Michigan Festival Orchestra performs July 20 at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell as part of the weekly Concert in the Park series. There is no admission for the concert that begins at 7 p.m. Formed in 1985, the 60-piece, full symphony orchestra is comprised of musicians from Clinton and Shiawassee counties along with the greater Lansing and Flint areas. The orchestra performs a variety of musical styles similar to a Boston Pops type of concert. Rodney Lamar Page, former orchestra director at St. Johns Public Schools, returns again as conductor. “I’m excited to take the podium again this year to conduct this outstanding orchestra,” Page says. “We’ve got another great program lined up of popular and light classical music that will have a wide audience appeal.” Originally from Southfield, Page has been conducting and performing for nearly 20 years. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and 2002 Fulbright recipient, and was employed as director of orchestras in St. Johns from 2002-09. Page’s skill and accomplishments in the classroom were acknowledged in 2006 when he was designated District V Orchestra Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA). Most recently the talented musician and conductor has turned his attention to providing entertainment services as a freelance musician and DJ presenting unique, innovative shows. His repertoire includes violin, piano, and vocal percussion, often enhancing recorded music with live instrumentation. Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the

Rodney Page city of St. Johns, with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, The First Congregational Church in St. Johns is being recognized at the July 20 concert for its financial support of the Arts Council and the summer music series. Concerts are held each Wednesday evening, beginning at 7 p.m., in the beautiful outdoor concert venue at the St. Johns City Park, located near Park and Morton streets. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand each week that offers light refreshments. All concerts are held rain or shine. JOHNS — The City of St. Johns is now taking registrations for the following youth and adult programs. • Dinosaur Adventure - Due to popular demand the City of St. Johns Recreation Department is adding a second Dinosaur Adventure camp. The camp will run Aug. 1- 4 from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. and at the Main Pavilion in the City Park. Cost for the class is $18 for City of St. Johns residents and $24 for non City Residents. • Adult Zumba - The City is offering a five-week Zumba class. • Fire Chief Charlie Hyler honored - The City Commission and Public Safety Director Michael Madden praised the dedication, hard work and leadership of retiring St. Johns Fire Chief Charlie Hyler at the July 11 Commission meeting. During the ceremony, Mayor Dana Beaman remarked that for more than 40 years Hyler demonstrated the commitment and community service that is emblematic of the entire St. Johns Fire Department. Chief Hyler was also credited with being instrumental in upgrading firefighting equipment and extending the department’s service area to Bingham Township. The St. Johns community is indeed fortunate to have a chief and firefighters of such high professional caliber. • At the same meeting, the City Commission appointed Dean Mazzolini to the position of Fire Chief to replace Chief Hyler. He will work hand in hand with Assistant Chief John Kochensparger and Public Safety Director Madden to continue the fine tradition of the department. • Old Drake station You may remember there once was a time the City had a gas station on North

CITY UPDATE Dennis LaForest BR-127. The business closed down years ago, and the City is in the process of putting the land and building back on the real estate sales market, so it can house a new business and in turn generate tax revenues for our community. The City was deeded the property by the State of Michigan (at no cost) when it failed to sell at a tax sale auction. Once the City acquires a connected parcel behind the old Drake building, the properties will be put on the open market. • Townsend Road construction project update - Favorable weather has allowed construction crews to work steadily toward completion of the significant upgrades taking place on Townsend Road between BR -127 and Swegles Street. It is anticipated the project will be completed on or about Aug. 1, which is well ahead of schedule. During construction alternate routes should be followed by traffic whenever possible.

The City apologizes for any delays or inconveniences caused by this important project. Scott Road / Sturgis Street upgrades - The City is in the early stages of planning significant upgrades for Scott Road south of M-21 as well as completing resurfacing a portion of Sturgis Street west of Scott Road. Spicer Engineering has been awarded a contract for designing the project. Spicer will also facilitate the preparation of the City’s application for Small Urban Grant funds to pay for the bulk of these projects. The City is eligible to apply for these funds every three years, and if received, the grant is shared with the Clinton Area Transit Authority (the Blue Bus program). • Special events approved - The City Commission approved various summer special events at its last public meeting. Among these are the Vietnam Veterans’ Legacy Motorcycle Ride Aug, 6, the Mint Festival at the Depot, to be held on Aug. 12-13 and the US-27 Motor Tour Stop, scheduled to come through St. Johns Aug. 25.

Outside the courtroom, Zawacki said he expects to challenge the charges in Circuit Court. Harkness, who works at Michigan State University,

testified that she was driving home the afternoon of March 7, when the trunk light came on. Harkness lives north of St. Johns. She said the trunk light went off, but came back on shortly before she took the Price Road exit off U.S. 127. According to testimony: Harkness pulled over, and tried to shut the trunk, but it wouldn’t latch. Harkness eventually decided to access the trunk through the back seat. What she then saw made her think, “I’m

about to die,” she testified. On the trunk’s floor, she saw a stun gun, a set of keys to the car — and someone wearing combat boots, dark clothing and rubber surgical gloves. Harkness said she screamed and fought against the person in the trunk as that person tried to get through the seat. Eventually it shut, and Harkness ran. “All I could think was I needed to get out of there,” she testified. As Harkness told two

The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. Teacher retirement program needs to change On April 20, 2011, Dr. Ken Ladouceur, Superintendent of St. Johns Public Schools, sent a letter to the St. Johns Community outlining the financial concerns of our public schools. According to his letter, the St. Johns Public School’s retirement contribution rate is scheduled to increase from 20.66 percent to 24.46 percent of payroll in the 2011-2012 school year and then to increase again to 27.37 percent the following year. Next year’s increase alone will result in a loss of $239 per student from the amount of money available for non-payroll costs. We emailed Dr.

GUEST COLUMN Pat and Pam Walsh Ladouceur for clarification on several items, and he indicated that retirement contribution rates as high as 37 percent are projected in the next couple of years. This is a “defined-benefit” plan, meaning the annual dollar amount received during retirement is guaranteed. This is true no matter how long a person lives. It doesn’t matter what happens to the plan’s investments. If the plan’s investments fail to produce the required dollar amount, the shortfall is collected from the

schools to make up the difference. In effect, a retired school employee’s annual income is completely independent of prevailing economic conditions. This is both unsustainable and unrealistic. Hence, the rise in contribution rate every year for all schools. The Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System is a state department, and it is controlled by the legislature. We wrote our legislators, Paul Opsommer and Judy Emmons, asking that they change the retirement program to a “defined-contribution” plan as the current system is not sustainable.

In a defined-contribution plan, individual accounts are established for each participating employee. Annual contributions are made to each account, and these amounts are invested throughout an employee’s career. Upon retirement, the balance accumulated in an individual’s account is used to provide their retirement benefits. There is no future liability for the schools. Mr. Opsommer called our home after receiving our letter and talked to us about the problem and how they hope to address it. He said that in his school district (DeWitt), they currently pay about 86 percent

of their budget for wages, payroll taxes and benefits – this leaves only 14 percent for everything else. If, as projected, our current contribution rate of 20.66 percent rises to 37 percent in the next few years, it is obvious there will be virtually nothing left to pay for facilities, transportation, books, utilities, athletics, music, and so on. Starting in 1994, new state employees were enrolled in defined-contribution plans instead of defined-benefit plans. At the time, there was too much resistance for school employees to do the same. Mr. Opsommer said they hope to address the issue

this summer and establish a defined-contribution plan for new hires. A funding source will be required at the state level to address the unfunded liability facing schools for current employees. The school doard’s hands are tied as they have no control over retirement costs. We urge you to contact your State Representatives on this issue. It is a liability that won’t go away and must be dealt with for Michigan schools to get on the road to financial recovery.

CAASA mourns loss of former EMTs ST. JOHNS — The staff and management of Clinton Area Ambulance Service Authority are mourning the recent loss of three of their long time former EMTs. Walt “Sonny” Russell died suddenly on Saturday, June 25. Walt humbly served his community for 23 years as an EMT for CAAS, beginning in 1974. Walt’s wife Shirley, sons Dan, Chris, and Eric, and daughters Paula and Michelle unselfishly supported Walt’s commitment to his community. Son Dan followed his Dad’s example by becoming an EMT and serving with CAAS for several years as well. Walt mentored many new faces

at CAAS, and will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and “tell it like it is” style. One of Dan Russell’s best friends joined him in his venture into the world of EMS and community service. Eric Phelps began his EMS career as a basic EMT with Dan at CAAS in 1984. Eric found his calling in the world of EMS, which allowed him to share his caring nature and problemsolving skills in a most meaningful way. Eric continued his education and became a paramedic in 1992. To share his passion for EMS, he became an instructor coordinator in 1995, with new and expe-

rienced providers alike benefitting from Eric’s experience and knowledge. Eric joined United Rescue of Clare County in 1992, and had been the director for United since 2008. Eric passed away last June 30 at his home in Harrison at age 46 from an apparent heart attack. Eric will be fondly remembered for his passion and commitment to the EMS field, great sense of humor, his willingness to help, ability to comfort, and his “can do” attitude. Grove plans sports week for July 25-29 Grove Bible Church (grovebiblechuch.org) is hosting its ninth annual Sports Week from 9:15 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. each morning July 25-29. Children ages 3-13 will enjoy basketball, soccer, snacks, music, and Bible time. Nate Cropsey will be the head basketball coach. Nathan Patefield, missionary to Brazil, will be the head soccer coach. Maple River will hold their bi-monthly meeting at Sleepy Hollow State Park on Wednesday, July 20. This will be a picnic meeting for everyone interested in the Maple River and its watershed. The picnic meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the south pavilion at the swimming beach at Sleepy Hollow State Park with an old fashioned picnic. The swimming beach south Pavilion is located about one mile north of the park entrance and is adjacent to the beach bathhouse.

ST. JOHNS — Summer has definitely returned, and so have the bats. Most people tend to avoid these creepy critters, and for good reason. Bats are the most common animal in Michigan to transmit rabies, a viral infection contracted through direct contact from an infected animal. “Rabies is almost always fatal if left untreated,” said Dr. Graham, Medical Director for Mid-Michigan District Health Department. “For this reason, we are advising families to bat-proof their homes by making sure to repair any loose soffits, flashings, eaves and siding. Be sure to cover roof vents with screens, make sure all doors shut tightly with no gaps, and that window screens are not damaged or torn.” Obviously, if you or a family member gets bitten by a bat, medical attention should be sought right away and the animal should be tested for rabies. Young St. Johns golfer wins tourney Wrestling club to Zach Rosendale won the Riverwood State Junior Golf Tournament in Mt. Pleasant July 8-9, shooting a 73 and 76 for a two-day total of 149. He has won this tournament the previous 2 years. Rosendale also recently placed first in a Meijer Tour event at The Emerald and is currently playing on the Michigan Junior PGA Tour.

Clinton County deputies serve the people ST. JOHNS — Clinton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 575 calls for service during the week of July 4 to July 10. There were six assault and battery /family disputes during the week, as well as three breaking and enterings, one larceny, three instances of fraud and one sexual assault. Deputies investigated five reports of malicious destruction of property. They conducted two medical examiner investigations and responded to one DNR /hunting complaint. Deputies were called for six civil neighbor disputes. They also followed up on 23 investigations. Deputies made 292 traffic contacts during the week. There were 14 traffic crashes and 10 car-deer crashes. Ten drivers were cited for driving while their licenses were suspended. Six were arrested for operating while intoxicated and one was arrested for violation of the controlled substance act. Following are some details of deputy activity during the week. Veronica Boettger St. Johns Veronica Boettger, passed away Monday, July 11, 2011 at the age of 95. Born on June 27, 1916 in Bradenville, PA. The daughter of Michael and Susan (Mizzer) Galvach. Veronica married Edwin Boettger on September 20, 1939 and he sur vives her. Together, they were members of St. Johns Lutheran Church. They enjoyed traveling all over the U.S., going to the Senior Center and were also members of a square dancing group and had a kitchen band. Veronica had a passion for music. She loved her accordion and gave lessons for many years. In addition to her husband Edwin, Veronica is survived by her daughter, Sharon Backus of Las Vegas, NV, sons, Barry (Judy) Boettger of St. Johns, Edwin (Rosie) Boettger of Conifer, CO, sister in law, Maxine Galvach, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Veronica was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters. Funeral Services wil be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2011, at the St. Johns Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rev. Dr. Carol Adele Field St. Johns Beloved Wife, and Mother, she passed from this life at home in bed, as was her greatest wish on July 7, 2011. Dr. Field was born in Omaha, Nebraska, January 20, 1949, and grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. She grad uated from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa with a BA in Music Education in 1971. She attended Michigan State University where she met her husband, John M. Field, and graduated with a BA in Music Therapy in 1973. She and her husband settled in St. Johns, where she worked as a nursery school teacher, and served as Executive Director of Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Clinton County for many years. Following the loss of her son in 1980 she decid ed to dedicate her life to helping as many people as she could. She attended Sherman College of Straight Chiroprac tic in Spartanburg, South Carolina, graduating magna cum laude, and passing the National Boards for her Michigan license as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1987. Returning to St. Johns, she opened her practice in October 1987, which she operated with her husband until they retired in October 2007. She enjoyed hiking, bicycling skiing, and camping. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, John M. Field of St. Johns, brother and sister-in law, Ed and Rebecca Wood of Barryton, MI and brother and sister-in-law, Matt and Sue Field of Mt. Pleasant, MI, two cousins, Marigail Jury of Loveland Colorado, and Bruce McClurg of Redlands, California, and was proceeded in death by her infant daughter, Mary, and infant son Marshall, and her parents Mr. and Mrs. William H. McClurg of Des Moines, Iowa, mother and father-in-law, Max and Harriet Field and brother-in-law Mark Field. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, Ju ly 11, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church of St. John s, with Pastor Lori Sykes officiating burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Osgood Fu neral Home in St. Johns, 6-8 p.m. on Saturday and 2-4 p.m. on Sunday. Fowler Gertrude J. Witgen, died July 7, 2011, at the age of 101. Born in Fowler on February 6, 1910, she was the daughter of John W. and Caroline (Simon) Rademacher and lived in Fowler all of her life. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers Womens Association. Gertrude married Herman Witgen on June 22, 1935 and preceded her in death February 4, 1990. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Mathers of St. Louis five sons, Mark (Ju dy) Witgen of Fowler, William Witgen of Manistee, Paul (Lisa) Witgen of Gaylord, Luke (Lucy) Witgen and Roy (Eileen) Witgen of Fowler, 22 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her 4 brothersand two sisters. St. Johns Virginia "Ginny" (Goetz) Barras, 62, loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend died Saturday, July 9, 2011 after a short courageous battle with lung can cer. Ginny was born April 22, 1949 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI the daughter of Peter R. and Audrey (Nielson) Goetz. She worked for and retired from Fifth Third Bank after 33 years of service and was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. Ginny loved Christmas and holidays, traveling, long walks, dancing, singing, bowling, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, bonfires, gambling, bird watching and watching all kinds of wildlife and nature, her swimming pool and most of all her family, friends and her faith. On July 30, 1966 she married George J. Barras Jr. and they have shared 45 wonderful years together. Surviving is her husband George; daughters, Lori (Chip) Keilen, Kim (Brad) Smith; one son, Brad; six grandchildren, Lindsey and Drew Keilen, Mitchell and McKenzie, Hilley, Paige and Kaylie Smith; mother, Audrey Goetz; mother-inlaw Ellen Barras; sisters, Linda, Brenda, Susan (Eric), and Peggy; brothers Peter (Julie) and Steven (Amy) Goetz.
