ST. JOHNS - It’s a perfect combo: Bluegrass music performed by youthful musicians in a fantastic venue during the Clinton County 4-H & Youth Fair. That’s what area residents will enjoy Aug. 3 when Cats and the Fiddler play at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell, located next to the Fairgrounds in St. Johns. The free concert begins at 7 p.m. No one does contemporary Bluegrass better than the trio of 15-year-old musicians, each of whom has been making music since they could hold a stringed instrument. In recent years, Cats and the Fiddler has entertained audiences across Michigan and beyond with a new style of contemporary bluegrass. The trio of Shaun Richardson, James Richardson and Carmen Gibes made their professional debut

playing with IBMA awardwinning bluegrass bands like Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Cherryholmes, and Dailey and Vincent. The band performed at the 2009 Detroit Music Awards. Their third CD, Road to Nashville, was featured in the nationally

recognized magazine “Bluegrass Unlimited,” and a new CD, Come Back to Me, is generating rave reviews from music critics and audiences alike. Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the city of St. Johns, with

support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, the Clinton County 4-H & Youth Fair is being recognized at the

Aug. 3 concert for its financial support of the Arts Council and the summer music series. Concerts are held each Wednesday evening, beginning at 7 p.m., in the beautiful outdoor concert venue at the St. Johns

City Park, located near Park and Morton streets. For information on Concert in the Park call the Clinton County Arts Council, (989) 224-2429. — From Clinton County Arts Council

Each Tuesday evening, July 19 – Aug. 23, the railroad branch of the Clinton County Arts Council, is offering a wide variety of games and activities for kids at the St. Johns Depot, with the exception of Aug. 2 when the group will be at National Night Out at the Lutheran Church. Aug. 16 and 23, there will be the added bonus of face-painting by artist Sharon Shutes, a popular favorite. A big thank you goes to Turning Point Youth Center for their wonderful participation in the kickoff event. Members of St. Peter Lutheran Church are excited to welcome children of the community to their 2011 VBS program – Pandamania: Where God Is Wild About You! They are equally excited to support two very special mission projects – Compassion International’s Water Of Life and Socks for Soldiers. Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults. Monetary offerings collected throughout the week will be given to Compassion International to purchase safe water systems that require no electricity or running water. The simple system uses filtration technology based on that of kidney dialysis machines, removing contaminants and bacteria such as cholera, E. coli, dysentery and typhoid. Each filtration system costs $55,

Local teens to ‘dance for those who can’t served by Covenant House Michigan. It is a haven for teenagers as a place where they can go and be treated with respect and unconditional love. “What makes Teens Dance for Those Who Can’t organization so successful is the vision and aspirations of our teens to help other people,” said youth minister Nancy Poff. A teen team meets each year to decide which charity they will dance for, and helps implement the the dance a thon, according to Poff. With no school in the summer, the teens have ample opportunity to do good for others, she added. “We hope that local businesses, families and individuals will help and support our local teenagers to meet team goals,” said Poff. “More importantly, support helps build the future of our local servant leaders.” The teens hope to raise over $10,000 to help Covenant House Michigan, by way of pancake breakfasts, bake sales, pop can drives and calls to family and friends for donations. ST. JOHNS — Almost $24,000! That is the amount St. Johns teenagers who have participated in the Teens Dance For Those Who Can’t Dance-A-Thon have raised for charity over the past four years. Using the scripture verse, “You have turned my mourning into dancing” – Psalm 30:11 as their motto, St. Johns area teens continue their mission this year dancing for Covenant House Michigan. Friday night, Aug. 5, at St. Joseph School gym, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., about 150 teenagers will dance all night to help raise money. Before the dance can go on, teens will be raising money and awareness for Covenant House Michigan. Located in Detroit, Covenant House Michigan is a faith-based nonprofit organization that provides hope to homeless, runaway and at-risk youth ages 13-22. They provide shelter, educational and vocational programs, as well as other support services, to help overcome hurdles such as homelessness, unemployment, inadequate education, violence, drugs and gangs. Their goal is to redirect them onto a path toward meaningful and successful adulthood. Since its inception in September 1997, over 42,000 youth have been

Charges pending against teens in vandalism spree Sue Lounds slounds@lsj.com

ST. JOHNS — Clinton County Sheriff’s detectives have identified four suspects in the July 17 malicious destruction of property in Westphalia. The four were expected to be arraigned as soon as the exact charges were determined, according to Detective Sgt. Fritz Sandberg. At press time, detectives were still awaiting final dollar amount estimates of the damages from all of the victims involved before the cases could be submitted to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office seeking criminal charges on the four suspects. The trouble began in the early hours of July 17. Calls went in to Central Dispatch after witnesses seeing at least three subjects running from the area where damage was done. The four male suspects, all area residents, ages 15, 17, 17 and 19, went on a spree of destruction in the northern part of Westphalia. “They slashed tires, slashed an above-ground swimming pool, tore down light poles, smashed junc-

tion telephone boxes, and damaged landscape lights and fencing,” said Sandberg. “We believe the damages are in excess of $10,000.” Thanks to a tip from an area resident and persistance from the detectives, the Sheriff’s office eventually got a confession from one of the individuals involved. “We went over and shook a lot of trees and knocked on a lot of doors,” said Sandberg. “One of the kids finally admitted to being involved, and he gave us three more names.” Sandberg said this incident is a great example of how alcohol and young kids together do not generate good sense. “It was like mob mentality but with four instead of 50,” said Sandberg. The parents of at least one of the suspects is being very cooperative, according to Sandberg. “When a father will say ‘My kid was involved; he’s going to own up to it and he’s going to do the right thing’ that really helps us,” said Sheriff Wayne Kangas. Investigation into the incident is continuing.

Lend support to those in need Clinton County 4-H, the Clinton County Fair Board and the Care Center are joining forces to help support struggling families in Clinton County. For a number of reasons, the number of families in the area who need support to meet their family’s basic needs is on the rise and while the public can’t fix everything, there are certainly ways people can work together to make a difference. This year at the 4-H Fair, there are three ways that people can get involved in community efforts to help. • A partnership with the newly formed Care Center, H.O.P.E., Capital Area Community Services and others will allow interested businesses, organizations and/or individuals to purchase livestock at the 4-H and FFA Livestock Sale and donate the meat to area Food Banks. People interested in this would make the purchase at the sale, indicate their ST. JOHNS —

desire to make the donation on their shipping card, and the rest will be taken care of for them. The Livestock Committee will handle the trucking, H.O.P.E and Bellinger Packing will handle the processing, and Russ McCoy, Pauline Baert and Tom will make sure the meat gets to families in need. Buyers will get a credit for the amount over the purchase value as a donation to 4-H and for the actual value of the animal as a donation to the Food Bank. For more information on this, contact Russ McCoy at mccoyrussell32@yahoo.com • Area food banks will be thrilled to get the donation of farm fresh frozen meats, but there is an evergrowing need for all foods and family care items. To that end, 4-H members, leaders, parents, family, friends and other fair visitors are asked to consider bringing a non-perishable food item to the Fair. Collection boxes will be in

Smith Hall, Peck Hall, and the Fair Office. • The third effort will have 4-H partnering with Great Parents Great Start and Project Back to School. Collection boxes will be available in Smith Hall, Peck Hall, and the Discovery Tent to collect socks and underwear which will be distributed to families at the Back to School distribution later in the month. Donations of back packs and school supplies are also needed and can be dropped off in the Discovery Tent at Fair, Clinton County RESA or the Extension Office between Aug. 9 and Aug. 28. Think about making a contribution to one of these community efforts and help make Clinton County a great place to raise a family. For additional information about any of these efforts, feel free to contact silm@anr.msu.edu. — From Clinton County MSU Extension

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Basic Needs Center appreciates support We at the Basic Needs Center (BNC) want to say thank you to the many that have helped us during the month of July. We have been blessed by donations of food, clothing, helping hands, services and some cash. We want to say a special thank you to Gary Floate for our wonderful donated sign; Ed Cary, Dwain and Anna Bray and our

en’s old neighbors and local people. She shed a lot of happy tears when people came to greet her and give her hugs. More than 20 members of her family attended. The Mello Tones did a great job playing and singing the oldies and we know that Helen and the residents of the manor would have all liked to be out on the floor dancing and swaying to the music. We all enjoyed watching Forrest and Doris Swatman dancing. Thanks also to Heather Sranton and all of the ladies who helped serve cake, ice cream and punch. Believe me when I say that when we looked at our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-greatgrandmother and aunt with her beautiful hairdo and smile on her face and tears in her eyes, we didn’t see an elderly 105 year old woman, we saw a wonderful lady who has always been a mainstay in our family. Thanks to all who attended the party, to the manor for hosting it, to Heidi for all the work she did, and to all the people who helped work. Everyone made it a special day for Helen and her family. Nita Terpening St. Johns

All thoughts and prayers appreciated

Thank you to everyone who remembered us with a call, a visit, a prayer, flowers, food brought to the house, cards and gifts at the time of Emily’s death and Dick’s stroke and hospitalization. President is using scare tactics All is appreciated very much and has helped at a most President Obama is once again trying to scare the difficult time. Dick & Dorothy Jandernoa elderly by saying to Scott Pelley of CBS News that he cannot guarantee Social Security checks, Veterans checks and disability checks will go out as planned if Democrats and Republicans don’t raise the debt limit. Our government collects over $180 billion dollars in taxes each month. That is more than enough to pay the interest on our debt, insuring that our country does not default, with enough left over to pay social security benefits, veterans benefits, and other entitlement programs with no problem. Why, then does the president say that he “cannot guarantee” Social Security checks will go out? Landscape Designer According to law, if there is a government shutdown,Congress and the President will still be paid. My question to the president is, “If the military and • Landscape Design & Installation senior citizens will not be paid, who would you choose to pay?” • Tree, Shrub & Perennial Planting Pastor Russ McCoy St. Johns

Approximately 350 parcels in Ovid Township alone will be affected by the new FEMA maps, not to mention many others in Duplain, Middlebury and all throughout Michigan. No one really seems to know who signed off on these maps. Why FEMA did not use elevations in these maps that would have clearly shown many, if not all of the dwellings to be well outside of these new abstract boundaries is beyond me. What I do know is that many people are now going to be forced to either 1.) spend time, energy and money to try and get out of this ordeal, or 2.) capitulate and be forced to buy flood insurance in perpetuity. I have lived here most of my life. I saw the flood of 1981. And while several homes in the southwest corner of Ovid had water coming out of their basement windows, it was not devastation like one would see from the Mississippi Delta. Simply put, this is a transfer of wealth from our communities to those in other states that choose to build in ridiculous areas. This is a huge governmental agency wielding its power to steal what little wealth we have left and give it to other people and ultimately ensure the jobs and livelihoods of FEMA’s life-long employees and bureaucrats. Taking just the approximate 350 parcels in Ovid Township alone and multiplying by $500 to $1,000 per year for flood insurance equals $175,000 to $350,000 each and every year that will vanish from our community. Not to mention those affected in Duplain and other surrounding townships. That is money that will no longer be available to purchase a lawn mower, pizza, ice cream cone, etc. It will further harm Ovid and Elsie. There will be those that will no longer be able to justify their struggle with their mortgages due to this extra cost on homes that are worth 40 percent of what they used to be. They may simply walk away, adding even more foreclosures to the tax rolls. This is just another example of government run amok. This is legalized theft by an out of control governmental leviathan. I facetiously told the lady from FEMA, “I bet my iphone has an app for elevation.” She replied, ”I doubt it”. Well surprise – it does – its called Elevation Pro and guess what – it’s free. Nice job FEMA and bureaucrats….

advisory board of directors for hours of donated time. Some of this time was converted into cash allowing us to pay two months rent in advance - what a blessing. Also the promise of help from many community churches and thank you, First Congregational church for the food and cash donated last week. The BNC is a continuing opportunity to serve and give back to our Clinton county community. Times are very demanding on our community with so many out of work, not to mention exhausted unemployment benefits. We will need thousands of pounds of food, cases of personal items (toilet paper, tooth paste, etc.), and many bags of new and like new clothing for all sizes and seasons. We have a couple of immediate needs that you might be able to help us with. We need spaghetti sauce, sugar, salt, pepper, toilet paper and office supplies (an assortment staples, paperclips, tape, scissors, a receipt book and paper). And now the hardest thing to find, cash. Without it all the above will disappear. We have to pay our bills, telephone, utilities, rent, our daily needs and food (meat and dairy). None of the money goes to our staff or volunteers. Thank you for your help; together we can be a helping hand to those in need. Blessings to You and Yours
