Changes await at SJHS as the school year nears slounds@lsj.com

ST. JOHNS – Lots of changes await St. Johns High School students when school begins Sept. 6. The most obvious change is the absence of the math pod that was torn down in July to make way for the start of construction on the new addition to the high school. Tearing down the math wing means eight

classrooms were lost. Five teachers were laid off in the spring, including one math teacher. “We had to relocate seven teachers,” said Mark Palmer, St. Johns High School principal. The computer lab that was in the center of the math wing has been moved to the media center. There are now two computer labs there and two classes will be located in the media

ST. JOHNS - The first day of school is fast approaching, and to make the start easier on the family budget Clinton County Housing & Homeless Coalition, GreatStart Parent Coalition and MSU Extension are sponsoring Project Connect Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Smith Hall on the Clinton County Fairgrounds in St. Johns. To make the event a success, your help is needed. Now is the time to donate gently used clothing, appropriate to school, so it can be distributed at Project Connect. Drop-off sites have been designated around the county. Clothing, including shoes and new underwear and new socks, can be dropped off Aug. 22-26 during regular office/ business hours. The Parent Coalition is organizing the underwear, sock and clothing collection again this year. Their hope is to collect at least 500 pairs of new underwear and socks. Last year’s event served 117 families, including 199 adults and 290 children. “We ran out of underwear and socks after about an hour and a half,” said Maria Cook, parent coordinator for the GreatStart Parent Coalition.

About 20 packages of underwear were donated during the 4-H Fair earlier this month. Walmart in St. Johns has donated $500 for the purchase of underwear and socks and the St. Johns Lions Club gave $100 toward the effort, but to reach the goal of 500 pairs of each, more are needed. And Cook says the hope is that each child who attends Project Connect will leave the event with at least three or four outfits appropriate for school. That means the need for gently used clothing is great as well. Clothing isn’t all that will be available at Project Connect. Resources and onsite services will include: Employment services, food and nutrition, housing information, legal assistance and GreatStart Early Childhood resource. Safe Kids and Sparrow Clinton Hospital will be holding a free car-seat safety check and fitting in the parking lot outside Smith Hall during Project Connect. Inspections and fittings will be done on a first come, first served basis. Participants must be Clinton County residents and the child who will use the seat must be present. A limited number of free seats will be available. And there will be plenty of free items and services

to those portables. “The math teachers will be spread around the building,” said Palmer. “Every teacher has a spot but one.” That teacher will have to move from room to room, using other teacher’s rooms during their conference periods. “The plan is that by this time next year, the center part of the new wing will be ready,” said Palmer. “That will include all eight science rooms and seven other classrooms.” Construction on the new wing is scheduled to begin about Oct. 1, according to Palmer. Another obvious change is parking. New temporary parking lots

have been created north of the school and west of the existing parking lot. About 75 percent of the main parking lot west of the school has been fenced off in preparation of the start of construction on the new athletic facilities at the high school. “There is a new temporary parking lot for staff and visitors in front of the school,” said Palmer. “Students will be parking west of the school in a temporary lot where the band practice field was. The parking will be the biggest change for many of the students.” This is the 12th summer Palmer has been in St. Johns and the first time he hasn’t spent part of his summer hiring one or more teachers for the high school. “We have no new teachers this year,” he said. “Lisa Marier will split time

The Michigan Department of Education has announced the household income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for free and reduced price meals and free milk through the national School Lunch, School Breakfast, Special Milk and Child and Adult Care Food programs. The income guidelines are effective from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. Families should contact their school, school district, child care center, or family child care home to find out whether it participates in these programs. Schools and child care centers will provide a form for applying for free and reduced price meals. Only one application is required per household. Children or foster children who are recipients of Michigan’s Family Independence Program, Food Assistance Program, or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or who are enrolled in Head Start, Even Start, an At-Risk afterschool center, or an emergency shelter

automatically qualify for free meals. Households with incomes less than or equal to the following guidelines qualify for free or reduced price meals or free milk. The scale for free meals or free milk for a family of four sets the maximum annual income at $29,055. Add or $4,966 for each additional family member or subtract that amount for smaller families. Monthly income limit for a family of four is $2,422. Add or subtract $414 per family member for different family sizes. An application to a school or child care center can be approved if it contains complete documentation of household income or documentation of current participation in Michigan’s Family Independence Program, Food Assistance program, or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations. Information supplied on an application for free or reduced price meals may be verified at any time. An

appeal procedure is available for households where applications are denied. Participating schools and centers accept applications for free and reduced price meals at any time during the year. A household may qualify for free or reduced price meals due to a temporary loss of income, such as a period of unemployment. If a doctor has determined that a child has a disability, and the disability would prevent the child from eating the regular school or child care center meal, the school or child care facility will make any substitution prescribed by a doctor at no charge. The doctor’s statement, including prescribed diet and/or substitution, must be submitted to the food service department of the school or child care facility.

ST.JOHNS — Aug. 15 at approximately 8 a.m. the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office was called to a residence on M-21, also known as Second Street, in the Village of Fowler in response to a reported armed robbery. Deputies investigating the robbery advised that at approximately 7:55 a.m. the suspect, described as a

white male, 5’ 10” to 6’ tall, with brown hair and slim build, came to the victim’s door and said his vehicle had broken down. He asked to come in and use the phone. Once inside the home, the suspect produced a knife and demanded money from the victim. The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and the victim’s personal vehicle, which was recovered Aug. 16 abandoned on Chadwick

Road, west of Airport Road, approximately one mile northwest of the City of DeWitt. A composite sketch of the suspect was generated which shows the suspect wearing a brown ball cap with distinctive sunglasses with bright yellow sides resting on top of the hat. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the robbery or suspect to contact the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office at (989) 224-5200.

Halfmann to sign books Aug. 27 Former St. Johns resident Janet Kloeckner Halfmann will sign her newest book, “Star of the Sea: A Day in the Life of a Starfish,” from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Schulers Books & Music, 1982 W. Republicans dissatified with their party A recent poll found, for the first time, 52 percent of Republicans are now deeply dissatisfied with their own Republican Party and many have lost all confidence with the so-called “Republican” leadership. Far too many self-professed Republicans are affiliated with the party in name only and regularly betray the very core principles upon which the Grand Old Party was founded. True Republicans strongly believe in and live the very principles and values that have made America the envy of the world. We strongly believe in constitutional government, true fiscal responsibility, a non-intrusive government (the smaller the government’s role in our lives the better), individual freedoms and liberties and taking direct responsibility for our own lives and helping the ones we love and care for. We believe in strong family values and that marriage is a union ordained by God between one man and one woman. And we are proud to stand up for every American’s baby’s right to life. The Republican Party can only survive and regain voter credibility if it once again returns to these same core values that all decent Americans believe in.

We absolutely will not survive as a nation if we don’t stand up for these principles and we all know darn well the left wing Democrats sure aren’t going to do it. That leaves us with only on choice. We must only vote in candidates who are truly Republican in every facet of their personal, professional and political lives. For the sake of our country, children and grandchildren I pray our Republican leaders will immediately come to the realization that bowing down to the special interest groups and the back room cigar smoking power brokers is not in their best interest nor the long range best interest of our nation. We are individually better than that, and so our Republican leadership must live up to our ideals and standards as well. It is truly time to start cleaning The House and The Senate. I sowed prayer and some time and received over 2,000 pounds of meat. We thank the Lord for answered prayer. Our goal is to meet the continued needs of Clinton County. I would like to thank the following people for their generosity during the 2011 Mint Pageant: Flashback Enterprise, Inc. for sponsoring me; Miss Presocki for the letter of recommendation; Clinton County Chamber of Commerce; Wendy’s for the Little Miss Mint’s awesome meal; Anna Petersen, Jamie Karek, Emilee Tack, and all involved in coordinating the pageant - you did a great job; the choreographer, Trisha Bellgowan; the practice facilities, Heather’s Dance Company & the Clinton County Senior Center; Beauti Control (Krista Hallead) for the spa day; Shaggie’s for the ice cream; all the businesses and individuals who supported the pageant in numerous ways; to all who donated items for the gift bag; Iryshe Photography; the Irrers for the Mint Farm Tour and hotdog roast; all who donated money and cans for our can drive to support the future spray park; Sparrow Clinton Hospital Anesthesia Services; to all the mint pageant contestants I really enjoyed our two weeks together; Aunt Malinda; Shelly Wilkie and Kim Inglis for fixing my hair; my dear friend, Royale for your support in numerous ways; my BFF, Jessica Zuker for being there when I needed you; all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins for their support; Grandma & Grandpa Lott and Kotowicz, my Mom, Dad, Alli, Jay, and Joce for their endless support; to all who came to watch me at the pageant - thank you for your support; to Sundance for transporting us in the parade; to the Queen’s Court and parents for a fun weekend at the festival, and to anyone whom I may have forgotten to mention. I would like to thank everyone that played a part in the 2011 St. Johns Mint Festival. While the rain kept some people away and made others look a little limp throughout the weekend, it also brought out the goodness of many. Steering Committee members, police officers and vendors left their normal duties to throw mulch and dig ditches. Vendors and shoppers helped vendors quickly cover merchandise to avoid significant losses. People stepped up to help the elderly and handicapped get to their cars when the downpours came. I consider that a great success. Our financial and in-kind sponsors came through big time again this year. This festival would not have been possible without. In addition to sponsorship, many businesses allowed their employees to serve on our planning committee, taking them away from their jobs throughout the year and for some for several days leading up to, during and after the festival. I commend you for supporting your staff and giving back to the community. Thanks go to anyone that volunteered – each and every volunteer was important and I appreciate the time you contributed to the weekend. To our attendees, I appreciate your attendance at the festival and your support of vendors, entertainers and everyone associated with the festival. The lines were long for food, crowds were large for the entertainment and vendors were pleased with their sales. This all points to a good festival year. Let us know if you have ideas for next year’s festival. And, it’s never too early to sign up to volunteer. Thank you to my Steering Committee that has been meeting since last September to plan things and make it all happen – you are the greatest! I am writing today to let you know how much many others and myself appreciate the nearly 15 years of service Pastor Paul and Phyllis Daniels have extended to the First Church of God in St. Johns. Together they have been involved in many acts of community service from volunteer bell ringing for the Salvation Army, wrapping gifts at Christmas at K-Mart, helping with food distribution at Capital Area Community Services, volunteering at Sparrow Clinton Hospital, and being extremely involved in the St. Johns Ministerial Association along with numerous other hidden acts of service. Having recently announced their retirement to move to be closer to family, our congregation would like to invite the community to say thanks and bid them well at a reception to be held in their honor. EAST LANSING - Dairy quiz bowl concluded a weeklong schedule of competitions and activities at 4-H Dairy Days held July 18-23 in conjunction with the 15th annual Michigan Dairy Expo on the campus of Michigan State University. 4-H Dairy Days is the youth-centered portion of Michigan Dairy Expo, the largest annual dairy event in the state. Clinton County teams dominated the Dairy Quiz Bowl novice division by placing first, second and third. In first place was Clinton County Team A with memters Ian Black, Dakota Dershem, Daniel Remenar and Kyle Schafer.

Placing second was Clinton County Team C: Amanda Hicks, Keith Schafer, McKenna Thelen and Sophie Wilsey. In third place was Clinton County Team B: Miriam Cook, Carla Hicks, Josie Nash and Kassidy Thelen. Those competing in the novice division are first year members ages 9-11. In a repeat from 2010, Allegan County Team A won the junior division. The team from Ottawa County placed second. Third place was won by Clinton County Team A: Miriah Dershem, Joshua Markel, Forrest Nash and Allison Schafer. Those competing in the junior division are 4-H members ages 11-14. Clinton County also captured the senior division win. Winning team members were

Kristine Batora, Kayle Jakus, Allison Pung and Katie Thelen. Those competing in the senior division are 4-H members ages 15-19. The winning senior division team will have the opportunity to represent Michigan 4-H in the national dairy quiz bowl competition held during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., in November. Friends of CIS trail receive grant The Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance presented a check for $5,000 to the Friends of the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail at the Kent County Fairgrounds in Lowell July 19 as part of their 21st Annual Michigander Bicycle Tour. The grant was one of five awarded to Michigan trail groups as part of their “Con-

necting Michigan” Small Grant program. The Friends group will use the grant as part of a local match fund-raising effort for Phase One of the development of the trail between Ionia and Owosso. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has identified Phase One as: asphalt paving of sections within the communities of

Ovid, St. Johns, Fowler, Pewamo and Muir; grading and drainage, bridges and culverts, access management, site amenities (benches, shelters, bike racks, etc.), and a comprehensive signage system. The Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance is a non-profit organization that fosters and facilitates the creation of an intercon-

NEWS IN BRIEF The Laingsburg Community Singers begins its 35th year this September under the professional direction of Steven Easterling and accompanist David Witchell. Both bring 20 plus years of experience in the choral arena. LCS is a non-auditioned community choir consisting of 38 members from a radius of 50 miles and ten cities. Music is bought with donations from those attending the groups four concerts each year (two in December and two in April). The goal is to continue providing the quality of music the choir has performed in the past. Metro Jazz Voices will croon in Aug. 24 concert ST. JOHNS - Jazz standards and popular favorites brought to life via sophisticated four-part harmony backed by one of the best rhythm trios in the state. That’s Metro Jazz Voices. Mark your calendar for Aug. 24 and prepare to be entertained when the Detroit-based group sings and swings at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell in the weekly Concert in the Park summer music series. There’s no admission charge for the performance that begins at 7 p.m. Metro Jazz Voices will croon tunes from all eras everything from standards like “Pennies from Heaven” and “Over the Rainbow,” to modern classics like “Me and Julio, Down by the Schoolyard.”

Some arrangements are similar to the New York Voices, Manhatten Transfer and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, producing sounds that are comfortable and yearning with sweet harmonies. The vocals in the “Voices” belong to Meri Slaven, Nicci Der-Stepanian, Carl Cafagna and Jeremy St. Martin. Instrumental backing comes from Scott Gwinnell on piano, Jordan Schug on bass and Mike Higgins playing drums. Cafagna also adds saxophone and flute into the mix. Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the city of St. Johns, with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for

the Arts. In addition, Sparrow Clinton Memorial Hospital is being recognized at the Aug. 24 concert for its financial support of the Arts Council and the summer music series. Concerts are held each Wednesday evening, beginning at 7 p.m., in the beautiful outdoor concert venue at the St. Johns City Park, located near Park and Morton streets. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand each week that offers light refreshments. All concerts are held rain or shine. ST. JOHNS Jean Duquette swears by homemade mint fudge. The herb makes her bathwater smell sweet. Mint oil helps soothe her husband’s arthritis pain. And its tasty qualities have reached her family in Ohio, who sent her specific instructions for this year’s St. Johns Mint Festival, held this weekend in St. Johns City Park and Clinton County Fairgrounds. “I have orders of how much mint candy to pick up,” said Duquette, of St. Johns, who attended Aug. 14. “I have to take it to Ohio next time I go.” The 27th annual festival wrapped up Aug. 14 after a cool, wet weekend. Organizers said even though thunderstorms and rain showers kept people away, no events were canceled. Lightning struck a tree over the weekend, said Brenda Terpening, the festival’s chairperson. No one was hurt. Despite the soggy weather, people turned out for a variety of activities, including children’s games, a dog show, dance performances and arts and crafts vendors. Among the latter was Crosby Mint Farm, a family grower that has operated for generations near St. Johns. This year’s event is more poignant because the farm was reclaimed from foreclosure last year, said Linette Crosby, a family member who sold mint lotions, oils and candy from a festival booth. Family members were evicted from the property in August 2009 after they were unable to raise enough money to save it. They received enough financial support to later purchase 100 acres of it back. “We had overextended ourselves,” Crosby said. “To be here at the festival, it’s our own little miracle.” She explained how mint

ELSIE — As part of Elsie’s 2011 Dairy Festival, the Elsie High School Class of 1961 held its 50th Reunion July 8-9. The party started with a Pizza Bash in downtown Elsie. Classmates renewed friendships and started catching up. ”Elsie “Big Red” T-shirts, memory books and name tags (with high school senior photos) were distributed to all. Saturday morning, 30 members of the Class of ’61 rode in the annual Dairy Festival Parade. Leading the class float was a 1961 Cadillac, driven by owner Al Brotherton of Lansing, followed by Jim Ebert and Laddie Tethal carrying the class banner. The float was pulled by Tom Kuchar’s truck driven by Dick Miller. As the parade wound its way through the streets of Elsie, classmates enjoyed the chance to sing the old Elsie Fight Song and to shout and wave to old friends along the route. Following the parade, classmates gathered at the Elsie Methodist Church for dinner and a program. Class President John Fatura called the “meeting” to order; Marilyn Kuchar gave

ST. JOHNS — Clinton County Sheriff’s deputies answered 679 calls for assistance during the weeek beginning Monday, Aug. 8 and ending Sunday, Aug. 14. Deputies investigated three assault and battery/ family disputes, one sexual assault, two larcenies and four breaking and enterings. Three instances of malicious destruction of property were reported and required deputy attention. There were also two medical examiner investigations and five civil neighbor disputes. Deputies followed up on 24 investigations. Deputies made 395 traffic contacts including 10 traffic crashes and six car-deer crashes. Deputies stopped 19 drivers who were driving while license suspended. They arrested seven individuals for operating while intoxicated and one for violation of the controlled substance act. Monday, Aug. 8 Deputies investigated a suspicious situation on US1-27 in Olive Twp. An harassment complaint on West Parks Road in Bingham Twp. required deputy response. Deputies checked a vehicle on N. DeWitt Road in Greenbush Twp. Officers assisted St. Johns Police Department on a warrant arrest/ violation of controlled substance act. Following a traffic accident on W. Price Road in Westphalia Twp., the driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated-enhanced blood alcohol content and child endangerment. Deputies investigated a report of shots fired on Pond View Dr. in Ovid Twp. Deputies checked on a residential burglar alarm on S. Lowell Road in Watertown Twp. Deputies made a traffic stop in the Village of Westphalia for a speeding violation. The driver was cited for a license violation. Deputies investigated a prowler complaint on E. Round Lake Rd. in Victor Twp. and another on S. Hollister Rd. in

Victor Twp. A stolen vehicle out of the City of Lansing was located on Turner Rd. in DeWitt Twp. The driver fled initiating a vehicle pursuit back into the City of Lansing where driver fled on foot after crashing into a fence. He was located by a K-9 team and lodged at the Clinton Co unty Jail for fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing an officer, and license violation.

Several threats/ harassment complaints were reported in Duplain and Bingham townships and required deputy investigation. Deputies were called to a two-vehicle injury crash in Olive Twp. Deputies checked on a suicidal male in Riley Twp. A call reported a vehicle driving (turfing) up a lawn in Duplain Twp. at the same residence of the several earlier threats complaints. St. Johns Joan E. Smith, age 92 died, August 10, 2011. Born June 21, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Geller) George. She worked as a secretary for the Department of Social Services in Ionia and Clinton County and was also a farmer. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Patricia Guild of the Altar Society. Joan married Stanley H. Smith, November 13, 1943 and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2000. Joan is survived by three daughters, Kay (Gil) Sparks of Washington, Patricia Thelen of Mt. Pleasant, and Jeanne (Carl) Murray of Ashley, three grandsons, Russ Sparks of California, Chris Sparks of Idaho and Andy Murray of Ashley, two granddaughters, Jenn Thelen of Alaska and Becky Arbic of Pickford, four great grandchildren, Joanne Arbic, Evan Arbic, Elias Arbic and Elizabeth Murray. In addition to her husband, Joan was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Joseph George, Roy Goerge and Leo George, sisters, Katherine Frechen, Alice Slowenski and Esther George. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Fred Thelen presiding. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at The Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel, on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service on Monday from 4 to time of service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Darrell was born in Owosso, Michigan on November 4, 1957, the son of Terry Anderson and Lila (Allert) Lane. He graduated from Corunna High School with the class of 1976. On May 1, 1982 he married Kathleen Goerge in Fowler, Mich igan. He lived in Corunna for many years moving to St. Johns in 1993. When Darrell was able to work he enjoyed driving truck cross country. Survivors include his wife Kathleen Lane of St. Johns, MI, 2 daughters; Andrea (Annie) Lane, Audrey Lane, 2 sons; Aaron Lane, Alex Lane all at home, granddaughter Hailee, and mother Lila Lane of Owosso, Michigan. St. Johns Laura V. DeMott died Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the age of 86. She was born November 20, 1924 in Mecosta County, Michigan the daughter of Benjamin and Myrtle (Baynton) Blem. Laura was a graduate of Fulton High School, Class of 1942, an active member of St. Johns Church of the Nazarene, a former Sunday school teacher and recently served as church office secretary. She enjoyed reading, sewing and working on wood crafts. Laura was an accountant and worked for the Fulton Public Schools, Gratiot Intermediate School District and retired from Total Petroleum of Alma. On July 12, 1947 she married Verne DeMott and he preced ed her in death in 1998. She was also predeceased by four sisters, Dora Munson, Irma Howell, Angeline Biddinger and Isabelle Sorrell. Surviving is one sister, Margueritte Armentrout of Reed City, MI and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Au gust 16, 2011 at St. Johns Church of the Nazarene 515 N. Lansing, St. Johns with Rev. Dr. Randall Rucker officiating. Interment will be 2:00 PM at Washington Township Cemetery in Gratiot County. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-2244422 and one hour prior the funeral service at St. Johns Church of the Nazarene. Chippewa Lake Stella J. Ostrowski, age 92, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Eaton Community Hospice House. She was born May 26, 1919 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Albert and Julia (Pietruszka) Glowacki. Stella grew up as a farm girl in the St. John’s area. She worked as an inspector for Sealed Power in St. John’s until her retirement. Stella moved to Chippewa Lake after retirement where she enjoyed flower gardening, yard work and the lake. She also liked to dance, especially a good polka. Stella was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big Rapids. She is survived by her son Walter (Juanita) Ostrowski of Apache Junction, AZ; a daughter, Joan (James) Settlemyre of Lansing; sister Esther Bills of Greenville; sister-in-law, Sybil Glowacki of St. Johns and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial will be at the Chippewa Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Stella’s name may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice, 2675 S. Cochran, Charlotte, MI 48813. Maple Rapids Stanley W. Grubaugh, Jr., age 40, passed away suddenly, Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Born October 24, 1970, in Carson City, MI. The son of Stanley, Sr. and Julie (Kidder) Grubaugh. Stanley resided most of his life in the Clinton County area. He was a tree cutter and part owner of S&J Logging. He worked all of his life in the forest product industry. He enjoyed nature, hunting, fishing and always finding the largest morel on logging jobsites. Stanley, Jr. is survived by his son Lucas Grubaugh of Elsie, father Stanley, Sr. of St. Johns, brothers Chad (Beverly) Grubaugh and Jason (Andrea) Grubaugh both of St. Johns, grandparents Jack and Carol Kidder of Ashley, numerous beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Julie Grubaugh and grandparents Glenn and Geraldine Grubaugh. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, Au gust 15, 2011, at The Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns, with Pastor Karen Messmer officiating. Burial will follow at Lowe Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family. The family was served by The Osgood Funeral Homes.

St. Johns Maynard H. Nobach, died August 15, 2011, at the age of 84. Born January 14, 1927, in Lansing, MI, the son of John and Vera (Wing) Nobach. Maynard married Dorothy on September 25, 1948, in Lansing, MI and she preceded him in death on May 4, 2007. Maynard enjoyed many things in life, such as fishing, croquet, playing Euchre, country music, reading American history and spending time with his grandchildren. Maynard is survived by his sons, Michael (Ginny) Nobach of St. Johns, Thomas (Karen) Nobach of Fowler, Roger (Rose) Nobach of St. Johns, Russell (Brooke) Nobach of Fowler, Tim (Marla) Nobach of Gregory, 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, sisters, Letesha (Murl) Tanner of Holt, Nancy (Mort) McKillop of Bellvue, MI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters, Arlene, Alice Jean, and brothers, Kenneth and Gordon. The family will receive friends from 9 - 11 am Friday, August 19th at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes in Fowler. His burial will follow at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery.
