Museum honors Rumbaughs ST. JOHNS — Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum hosted a celebration of John and Catherine Rumbaugh at the Museum Oct. 9. Clinton County formed the Historical Society in February 1978, with John Rumbaugh as treasurer. The couple’s vision of creating a historic house museum came to fruition on May of 1979, when the PaineGillam-Scott Museum at 106 Maple Street in St. Johns opened its doors for the first time. Their vision, knowledge and enthusiasm, along with endless time and talents, set the standards for the museum’s continuance. Catherine Rumbaugh served the Historical Soci-

ety as president for many years, and continued her work following John’s death in 1998. She became the executive director of the museum at its opening and continued in that capacity for nearly 32 years until her retirement in December 2010. At the reception, Catherine Rumbaugh was honored with the titles Historian and Director Emeritus by Lynne Gregory of the Clinton County Historical Society. Eighty guests attended the reception, and many others sent cards and notes of gratitude. — From Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum

St. Johns Theatre department presents ‘Once on This Island’ T

he St. Johns High School Theatre Department is preparing for its fall production, Once on This Island, which will be performed Nov. 11-13. Directed by Ashely Bowen and Andrea Makarauskas, the musical production is set on an island of the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. With elements reminiscent of both “Romeo and Juliet” as well as the fairytale “The Little Mermaid,” the play tells the story of Ti Moune,

a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy grand homme from the other side of her small island. The fantastical gods of Love, Earth, Water and Death rule the island and guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death. St. Johns High School staff and students will perform the musical accompaniment to this Caribbean-

inspired, high energy, song and dance performance. Evening performances are Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov.13. Tickets for reserved seating are $8, and go on sale Monday, Oct. 31. Questions regarding ticket sales can be directed to the ticket office at (989) 227-4210. — From St. Johns High School Theatre Department

St. Vincent’s plans half-price sale ST. JOHNS — St Vincent’s Store in St. Johns is planning a half-price sale Oct. 24-29. Store hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Thanks to all of the donations we have received, we have a large stock to choose from,” said Bertine Thelen. “We have clothing of all sizes, shoes, small appliances, kitchen items, many videos and much more. “We enjoy the compliments we receive about the cleanliness of our store. We have many customers that are weekly visitors. Being we stock our racks daily, our inventory changes all of the time.” Gift certificates are

available and can be purchased at the checkout counter. When buying at St. Vincent’s resale store, customers get great value for their money, according to Thelen. In turn, the money goes to help someone who is having a hard time paying their rent, heating their house or have medical needs. “When visiting our store, take a few minutes to shop our furniture store,” said Thelen. “We have had a lot of inventory and want to thank the people who have been so generous to donate to both of our stores.” The half-price sale pertains to the main store and not to the furniture store.

Foster parents needed in Clinton County ST. JOHNS — The Clinton County Department of Human Services is in need of caring individuals who can provide a safe and nurturing home environment for children who have been placed out of their home due to abuse or neglect. Foster Care is founded on the premise that all children have the right to physical care and educational and emotional nurturance. The family foster care program is designed to provide a substitute family life experience for a child in a household that has been approved and licensed by the Michigan Department of Human Services. Children may need foster care for a temporary or extended period of time. The primary goal

during foster care is to reunite the child with his or her parents. The foster family plays an important role in the treatment plan for the child and family. Under the “team” approach, foster parents or relatives, together with the worker, attempt to provide the specific kind of help a child and his family need for reuniting the child with the parents. When the child cannot be reunited with the parents, the children are prepared for permanent placement, with relatives or non-related adoptive families. Under certain circumstances, a foster family may adopt children in their care. When adoption is not possible, the goal is to prepare the youth for independent living.

Foster Care is seen as a short-term solution to an emergency situation. Clinton County needs committed individuals who are: • Willing to work with the child’s birth parents • Supportive of efforts to return the child home • Able to work with children who have significant emotional and behavioral needs • Willing to take in older youth • Able to encourage teens toward independent living. If you think you are able to help out, please contact the Clinton County Department of Human Services Foster Home Recruiter Christine Sisung at (989) 224-5548 or sisungc@michigan.gov for more information.

of the nation as a whole. Examine the differences between North and South Korea. They share the same culture, language and history. Yet, North Korea is one of the poorest nations on earth and has one of the most restrictive governments, while South Korea is prospering and enjoying a great many personal freedoms. Before the reunification of East and West Germany (again the same language, culture and history), oppressed East Germany was poor and underdeveloped, while West Germany was free to build itself into a thriving, vibrant economy. Some might say the country’s standard of living is dependent upon its natural resources. If that false belief was actually true, Japan with precious few natural resources would be eternally struggling and Russia with its vast array of natural resources would be near the top. Freedom to innovate and to reap the rewards of taking risk is the key to both the individual’s and a country’s standard of living. The more freedom one enjoys, the more wealth they have the potential to accumulate. As for me, I will continue to choose and fight for the same beliefs our founding fathers built our great nation upon –personal freedom and a limited constitutional government.

Freshman making big impression in cross country Denny Schwarze dschwarze@lsj.com

ST. JOHNS — St. Johns cross country coach Bob Sackrider has seen some freshman have an immediate impact when they come on the scene their first year of running. But he hasn’t coached one like Karrigan Smith. “Every once in a while you do get a freshman - usually a girl, not so much with the boys - but in the area you see some freshmen that come along that are wonderful athletes,” Sackrider said. “Certainly she’s the most accomplished I’ve ever coached, and I’ve been doing it for 18 years now.” Smith is just getting used to what it’s like being on a varsity team, but she boasts the fastest time of any area girls cross country runner this season with a run of 18:32 at the Spartan Invi-

tational, where she finished 12th out of 238 runners. “Pretty much when I crossed the finish line I was like ‘I can’t believe I just ran that’,” Smith said. “That was a meet where

she had the best competition,” Sackrider said. Smith competed in track events during seventh grade, then started running cross country in eighth grade while still running the 800-meter, mile and twomile races during the track season. “My middle school coach got me into it, and he said I would really benefit from doing it,” Smith said. “After doing the mile in seventh grade, I really liked doing distance running, and I trained with some of the high schoolers over the winter season. The team was just amazing, and I couldn’t wait to do it in high school. Knowing all the upperclassmen and running with them made me really want to be like them.” “There’s a few more opportunities to take part in track than there is in cross country,” Sackrider

said of the middle school level. “Once the kids get involved they get really excited about the sport.” Smith, who finished third at the Greater Lansing Invitational the year before reaching high school, had been excited to get going with the Redwings’ varsity cross country team and broke on the scene right away. Aug. 31, Smith won the Corunna Early Bird Invitational against a field that featured runners from Okemos and East Lansing, who finished as the top two teams in the large school division of the event. Smith ran a time of 19:51 to take the individual crown and was soon putting up consistent times in almost every race. “She’s just proven to be so focused on what she wants to do where as a lot of freshmen stumble, she’s continued to grow,” said

Sackrider. “I had trained really hard over the summer, so it’s definitely paid off,” Smith said. “My times, I was very surprised with them, but my team has helped my times come down by training with me and getting me through all this.” The lynchpin to Smith’s success so far and what has differentiated her from other freshmen that enter a varsity setting so early in their careers has been the focus Sackrider mentioned. “There’s tons of talent around in kids who run and don’t run, but it’s about what you do with that and she has a drive that’s pretty rare in freshmen,” Sackrider said. Smith’s drive and focus have also led her to want to set the bar even higher going forward. “I just love racing against good competition and anything I can do to

get my time down I’ll do to get better,” Smith said while stressing the continuing need to get more negative splits on each run. “Hopefully, once I get older and I have more experience, I’ll be even better and it’s just helped a lot racing against the competition that I’ve gone against so far.” There were some newcomer nerves along the way, though. “I was really nervous, even still, to all my upcoming races going against these girls who know what they’re doing and they’re at it for a few years,” Smith said. But that’s where Smith’s focus has kicked in, because the nerves haven’t been nearly as apparent as the plethora of quality times so far this season. “If she had them, she never showed them,” said Sackrider.

FALL INTO SAVINGS Redwings work to AT overcome tough loss BUDGET TIRE CENTER Denny Schwarze dschwarze@lsj.com

ST. JOHNS — The St.

Johns football team will head in to the playoffs licking their wounds after a dominant performance from Mason on Oct. 14. The Redwings gave up 49 points in a 49-7 loss to the Bulldogs, including four touchdowns from Mason quarterback Thomas McNamara. “We got outplayed; credit them,” St. Johns coach Dave Mariage said. “They did a nice job up front, and we obviously had a hard time stopping them, so if you can’t stop people and you don’t possess the ball then things aren’t going to turn out the way you want them to.” Senior fullback Andrew Mullikin had 64 yards and a rushing touchdown for the Redwings in the loss. A 1-yard scoring run by Mullikin in the first

quarter was the first touchdown of the game, but then Mason reeled off 49 straight points to overwhelm the Redwings. It was the worst loss St. Johns has had against the Bulldogs in 33 tries since 1950. Mason outgained St. Johns in total yardage 425-254. But all is not lost for the Redwings. Their win total has still qualified them for the playoffs and heading in to playoff games with a positive attitude will be the base layer for a possible deep push. “That’s what I told them. We certainly want to go in to the playoffs with a little bit of momentum,” Mariage said. “I’m confident. Our seniors, they’ll get us back up.” The fact remains that the Redwings still have a potent rushing attack with Mullikin and Mason Sauls and a quarterback that has shown he can throw the ball

effectively in Brad Cordes. Mason’s defense was really the first defense all year that has been able to shut down that trio for the St. Johns offense. The Redwings had scored at least 35 points in every game this season before the Bulldogs shut them down and shut them out after Mullikin’s first quarter rushing score. “You just take what you can. When you get beat, how do you respond to that? And we’re going to find out, and that’s life,” Mariage said. “You get beat sometimes and you get beat bad sometimes, you know and hopefully we can learn from it and have better practices, the typical stuff.”

The St. Johns boys tennis team fell short of reaching the Division 2 state finals, but they’re setting themselves up nicely for next year and beyond. The Redwings concluded their season at regionals on Oct. 7 at East Lansing, finishing fourth out of eight teams in the meet and scoring four points. “Only having eight teams, all you need is 10 points and you go to the state finals, so it would have been great,” St. Johns coach Mark Mercer said after concluding his first season as coach. “Last year we had one point at regionals, so we’re just building momentum.”

CAAC Red champion Zach Peters won his first match at No. 2 singles over Clay Stouffer of Mt. Pleasant 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, but fell to the eventual regional champion Jonathan Gurnee of Midland Dow in straight sets in the second round. Junior Paul Sochor also earned a first-round victory at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Landon Voigt of Mt. Pleasant before falling in the second round to Okemos’ Herschel Ambekar. After a runner-up finish at the CAAC Red meet, seniors Zach Werner and Zane Nachazel won in straight sets in their first round match at No. 1 doubles but did not make it out of the second round. Sophomores Erickson

Hufnagel and Brock LaBar earned St. Johns’ last point in the regional with a straight set victory in their first round match at No. 3 doubles before falling in their next match. St. Johns only loses three seniors from this year’s roster and should bring back Peters, Sochor and sophomore Tyler Wilkie, who was the team’s No. 4 singles player for regional play. Werner and Nachazel are the only doubles players that won’t be back for the Redwings next season. “Next year I think we’re going to be stronger,” Mercer said. “I’m looking forward to a good year next year. ...
