CLINTON COUNTY — Designing and working in the numerous beds and planting areas that comprise the gardens at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler isn’t just a hobby for Fr. Dennis Howard. It’s a celebration of life, evidenced by the bountiful, blooming plants and flowers that create a peaceful environment perfect for reflection and meditation. “The gardens are constantly changing with all the varied perennials and annual plants and flowers - the colors are always different depending on what’s in bloom,” Fr. Dennis says about the MHT gardens
he started several years ago when he assumed pastoral duties at the parish. “My parents loved gardening, and this is something that I enjoy, too.” Area residents have an opportunity to view the lovely garden area with its myriad of plantings and water features during a tour that’s planned for Sunday, July 17. The Fowler site is one of 10 stops on Andy T’s Garden Walk, coordinated by Sunday and Andy Todosciuk of Andy T’s Farm Market and Garden Center in St. Johns.

n rare and amazing thing will happen July 15. Helen Skinner will celebrate her 105th birthday. That’s right. She was born in 1906, before World War I. Helen was born on July 15, 1906 to Konstanty and Estello Jenc in Poland. When she was six years old, Helen and her family came to America by boat. Their first stop, of course, was Ellis Island and then they made their home in Buffalo, New York. Helen recalls going to the park when she was young. The policemen rode horses and watched over the people, she says. Helen learned to read and write in Polish. When Helen was 12 year old the family moved to Owosso. Her parents owned a store at the front of their home, but eventually they had to close the store due to hard economic times. Customers were unable to pay for the groceries that they had charged to their account, Helen recalls. Helen first married Steve Novak on November 17, 1923 at the age of 17. The marriage did not last. Novak left before their daughter Constance was born Sept. 10, 1924. Helen later learned that

Steve had been killed in 1932. Fortunately, better times were ahead for Helen and Connie. Dec. 29, 1938 Helen married Earl Skinner. He passed away in 1976. After Earl’s passing, Helen moved to St. Johns to live with her daughter Connie and son-in-law Richard Cronkhite. She lived with them for 32.5 years before going to live at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor. Helen held multiple jobs during her long life. She worked at Saginaw Malabo’s Foundry, a foundry in Owosso, a candy factory and a canning factory. She also was a waitress and ironed for many people. Her last job was at Redmond Factory which became Motor Products. She retired at the age of 70. Helen’s favorite past times include decorating; she even did her own painting and wallpapering. Helen enjoyed making doilies and afghans which are now prize possessions for her family. When asked what her fondest memory is Helen states “I loved taking the kids to the park to play. They had so much fun, and they loved me.”

Family and neighbors recall what a wonderful cook and baker Helen was. The smell of cakes, pies and cookies invited many to their home. While Helen was unable to teach her daughter Connie how to make a pie crust, she was able to pass that talent along to her granddaughter Cathy who follows in Grams footsteps. Helen has one daughter, three grandsons, one granddaughter, six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She also has many nieces, See SKINNER, Page 4

ST. JOHNS — St. Johns Lions and Lioness Clubs have partnered with a group of local vision professionals and with the Lions clubs of Michigans KIDSIGHT program to start a PEEK program (Preventative Eye Examination for Kids). This is a pro-active vision screening program using advanced computer technology designed to provide early identification of vision problems in children from 1 to 5 years old. Available data indicates that one out of every 20 children between the age of 1 to 5 has an eye problem that could permanently affect the child’s vision if untreated. This vision screening program is offered free of charge, and if a problem is indicated, the child’s parents are referred to a vision professional of their choice. This PEEK/KIDSIGHT vision screening program has started screening preschoolers and toddlers in Clinton County. St. Johns Lions club member F. Dale Kuenzli screens the vision of a toddler from the St. Johns — From St. Johns Lions and Lioness Wilson Center Little Wings Day Care Program.

Garden Continued from Page 1
“We’ve talked about doing something like this for a number of years, and decided this would be a good time to organize a garden walk,” Sunday says. “We contacted a number of our long-time customers, asking them if they’d be willing to open their gardens for a free tour like this and their response was very positive.” Tour goers can pick up a brochure and map with driving directions at Andy T’s prior to the garden walk. The various stops on the
tour will be open to guests from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 17. There is no admission charge. Stops on the tour include both flower and vegetable gardens. Sites are located around the St. Johns area, along with Fowler and north Lansing. “We’re estimating the driving time would be about three hours if you went to every stop,” Sunday says, noting that what direction guests go and how many stops they make is their decision. “They can travel however they want to and spend as much or as little time as they’d like at each garden.” Signs will be posted at each stop on the garden
walk, and owners or other individuals will be available to answer questions and provide information about their specific garden. “Arranging a tour like this is also a way for us to say thanks to our customers who have worked very hard for a number of years making their gardens so beautiful,” Sunday says, adding that Andy T’s hopes to expand the number of stops on the garden walk next year. “We’ve already
had requests from some customers who would have liked to be part of this tour, but we really wanted to start small with just 10 sites and see how it goes.” For detailed information on Andy T’s Garden Walk, call Sunday at (989) 224-7674, email andyts@charter.net, check out Facebook, or visit Andy T’s Web Store at www.andyts.com

Tuesday Times begin July 19 ST. JOHNS — Calling all families! Join the fun on Tuesdays, July 19 through Aug. 23, 6:30–7:30 p.m. in front of the St. Johns Depot. A new program called Tuesday Together Times, which is similar to last year’s Fun Family Fridays, is being offered by the Railroad branch of Clinton County Arts Council. The festivities will be kicked off with the “Wheel Deal” Parade at 6:30 p.m. July 19. All who want to participate should bring their decorated bicycles, tricycles, scooters, strollers or any other wheeled, nonmotorized means of transportation to the parking lot where Cindy’s Ice Cream used to be, on the corner of Spring and Higham streets between 6-6:30 p.m. While all ages are welcome in the Wheel Deal Parade, elementary school age children, those starting kindergarten in the fall through those going into sixth grade, should be sure to register when they arrive at the parking lot.
That will enter them in a drawing for two brand new bikes — one girl’s bike and one boy’s bike — which were generously donated by Turning Point Youth Center. Additionally, the first 25 children to register will receive a new bicycle helmet, courtesy of the St. Johns Police Department. At 6:30 p.m., the group will walk their ‘wheels’ along the sidewalk over to Clinton Avenue in front of the court house. A police car will lead the Wheel Deal Parade down the middle of Clinton Avenue, while all traffic is stopped. After three blocks, the parade will turn onto Railroad Street, which will be blocked off until 7:30 p.m. so the kids can participate in a bike challenge course. There will also be some games on the lawn for the younger participants. At 7:15 p.m., the drawing will take place for the two new bicycles. Future events at Tuesday Together Times will include Zumba for Kids,

parents are encouraged to attend to learn more. “We are excited about this,” said Roll. “It’s kind of a unique opportunity in our area.” Mother’s Day Out welcomes donations, according to Roll. “We need things like good toddler toys, area rugs in good condition,” she said. The program will also have an ongoing fund-raising program collecting returnable bottles and cans. “If people have a lot of cans they would like to donate, they can call the church to arrange for pickup, or they can just drop them off on the church porch,” said Roll. For more information about Mother’s Day Out or about the meeting July 13, call St. John’s Lutheran Church at (989) 224-6312.

ST. JOHNS — It’s a popular idea in other parts of the country, but Mother’s Day Out is new to St. Johns, according to Judy Roll who will be heading up the new program at St. John’s Lutheran Church. “This is a new outreach ministry, a service, for our community,” said Roll. Mother’s Day Out will be offered two days a week - Monday and Wednesday - from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 511 E. Sturgis St. It is for kids ages 2-5, prekindergarten, but it is not a drop-off center. “It is designed for moms who need some extra time,” said Roll. “For moms who need some extra time to
themselves.” The program will be Christian based with chapel once a week. There will be a curriculum including art projects and reading preparation. Mother’s Day Out is a fee-based program; the cost is $15 per day per child. There is a one-time registration fee of $75 and a $20 materials fee that is due in the fall, according to Roll. “We prefer kids are enrolled for both days,” said Roll. Mother’s Day Out will operate throughout the school year, beginning Sept. 7. “We’ll have breaks that coincide with school vacations,” said Roll. An informational meeting is planned for Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m at the church. Registration will also begin that evening. Interested

Veterans volunteer for Operation CARE ST. JOHNS — A salute to
the members of St. Johns American Legion Post 153. Every year since it opened, the local veterans group has staffed the DeWitt rest area on southbound US-127 providing free coffee, iced tea, ice water, lemonade, donuts, and good conversation to travelers who visited the rest stop from Friday afternoon through Monday evening during the recent Independence Day weekend. Post 153 has been serving motorists for over 20 years. Prior to the construction of the DeWitt rest area, the post served at the Ithaca rest area on northbound US-127. This year service clubs participated at eighteen of Michigan’s 81 rest areas, helping motorists arrive safely at their destinations. Their volunteer effort during the three traditional summer holiday weekends - Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day - is part of the Michigan State Police’s Operation C.A.R.E. - Combined Accident Reduction Effort. This year Operation C.A.R.E. entered its 34th year of operation. It began in 1977 as a collaborative effort between
the Michigan State Police and Indiana State Police, and is one of the nation’s longest-running traffic safety initiatives. Today it includes state and highway patrol agencies from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Quebec Police Force, and the Virgin Islands. This makes it one of the longest running traffic safety initiatives in our nation’s history. Operation C.A.R.E. was formed to deter the three key causes of highway fatalities: speeding, impaired driving, and failure to use occupant restraints. The rest stop operations are an effort to prevent the fatigue that is a factor in impaired driving. The American Legion is comprised of wartime veterans of America’s Armed Forces. The pillars of the organization are Americanism, Children and Youth, National Security and Foreign Relations, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, and Community Service. Post 153 is thriving with 300 plus members and an active Auxiliary and Sons

County Tea Party growing ST. JOHNS — The core group of the Clinton County Tea Party Patriots met recently at Ryan’s Roadhouse to assess their progress organizing a patriotic action movement. Paul Winter of Olivet is the South West Michigan Tea Party Patriots liaison to the Clinton County chapter, and he is pleased with the reception given by the people of Clinton County to the TEA party concept and activities. “Those who have come forward in Clinton County to take a stand for restoring the America of “Liberty and Justice for All” are doing fantastic. They’re a down-to-earth group, but have an energy and a passion for restoring our constitutional republic that’s, simply, amazing. They are attracting some very articulate and knowledgeable people who just are not going to sit idly by and watch America collapse and, possibly, fall into chaos
and violence,” said Winter. CCTPP began at the end of April with a call from Eric Gentile of DeWitt to Winter. Gentile had heard of TEA party activities in Eaton County and was looking to join a similar group here, but there wasn’t one. With Winter’s encouragement and help, a meeting was arranged for May 10; 72 Clinton County citizens attended and agreed a TEA group was needed. Gentile volunteered as initiating chair; Bonnie Cary, St. Johns, assistant chair and secretary; Michael Trebesh, St. Johns, treasurer; Connie Lapham, Perrinton, letter to the editor; Chuck Fowler, St. Johns, community organizer; and Rick Robbe, St. Johns, facilities. This success was soon followed by a town hall which the group sponsored at the Banquet & Conference Center of DeWitt June 14. The featured speaker was Justice Steven Markman of
the Michigan Supreme Court, who addressed the Constitution of the United States and the proper role of judges in upholding it. Also attending were Sen. Judy Emmons and Rep. Paul Opsommer who spoke briefly on key matters currently before the legislature. The presentations were followed by a question and answer session. Given the interest and success of this Town Hall, CCTPP has scheduled one a month for the rest of the year. These will be for the purpose of bettering communication between citizens and their elected officials on critical matters of the day. The town halls will be held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the St. Johns VFW Hall at 2497 N. BR-127. CCTPP can be reached at (517) 669-9593, or E-mail rehogee@gmail.com — From Eric Gentile

During the four-day camp, the team learned dance routines and worked on skills and technique, as well as participating in team building activities. At the end of the camp, girls were evaluated on memory and showmanship of the routines that they learned. St. Johns brought home the following awards: • Individual All-Americans: Trista Malek, Nicole Motz, Peyton Avery and Meg Dedyne • Drill Down Queen: Whitney Pung • Team Full Out Award for excellence in showmanship and choreography of team routine • Bed check award - the team won a gatorade cooler from camp administration for excellent behavior • Team Leadersihp Award which was voted on by all 24 teams at the camp session • Super Spirit Stick Supe-

ST. JOHNS — Marcus Roll loves music, choral music in particular. And now the new director of music at St. John’s Lutheran Church is looking for other people in the area who love singing. The reason - Roll is starting a community choir based at St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Johns. “It will be an adult choir (age 16 and up),” said Roll, “and anyone is invited to come and join.” The choir will sing some Sunday mornings at St. John’s Lutheran Church. “There will also be opportunities for solos, both vocal and instrumental,” said Roll. “I want to emphasize that if someone has a musical talent and they want to share, it doesn’t have to be choir. If they play an instrument and are looking for a venue, they can contact me.” He also hopes to have a recital at the end of summer or early fall.
“And I want to get a hand bell choir going too,” he said. Roll is willing to take people with any music experience. “My philosophy is take anyone, regardless of their music experience.” Roll, on the other hand, has plenty of music experience. The St. Johns High School graduate has a bachelor’s degree in voice from Central Michigan University and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting, also from CMU. He has conducted church and community choirs as well as university choirs, having seven years of experience under his belt. Roll has performed in Ireland and France in cathedrals and chapels. Last summer he toured in China. “I took the Steiner Chorale to China,” he said. “I was the interim director for a semester and it happened to be when they were going to China for 10 days.”
While on the tour, Roll had the opportunity to direct a combined choir that included choir members from the United States and China. “I got to direct the combined choir or over 100 voices at the Concert for Peace at the World Expo,” he said. But Roll says he enjoys directing smaller choirs too, sharing his love and knowledge of singing. “I want to teach musical knowledge, vocal health knowledge and overall musicianship,” he said. The community choir is free. There are no annual dues. Rehearsals will be on Monday evenings at 8 p.m. beginning July 11. Rehearsals will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 511 E. Sturgis St. in St. Johns. Roll says that although the community choir is a free program, he is hoping for a commitment from participants, but interested individuals are invited to come to a rehearsal Monday at 8 p.m. and check it out.
