Eaton County 4-H Fair: Close to home fun
RACHEL GRECO rgreco@lsj.com
I
t brings upwards of 28,000 people to the Eaton County Fairgrounds every July. To nearby residents the Eaton County 4-H and Youth Fair is a close-to-home summer escape, but organizers say the six-day tradition — which will run July 11 to 16 this year — is the result of a year’s hard work and dedication. Randy Johnson has been a member of the 15-seat fair board for 12 years. He said the group is more
than an overseeing authority for the fair — it is also the caretaker for the fairgrounds, with its volunteers at a moment’s notice rolling up their sleeves to repair barn doors and remodel buildings. “Being on the fair board is like having a second job,” admitted Johnson. “We are a working board, fixing things on the grounds. We only contract out things that we have to.” In fact, in the past year the fair board — which includes a licensed electrician and mechanic — completely remodeled Kardel Hall, put new floor drains in the barns were students showcase their livestock and performed general upkeep on other buildings. Johnson said those involved don’t mind. “We’re here for the kids,” he said. “We like what we do.”

Theo Savage is the board’s vice president and a 27-year veteran with the county’s fair. He said last year the event — which includes everything from midway carnival rides, to arts and crafts and grandstand events like demolition derby — brought in $60,000. Any profits made one year are used to finance next year’s fair. Savage said the event has never lost money, but simply breaking break even has been a struggle some years. Savage said last year people turned up at the fair, having decided not to spend money on a vacation away from home. He hopes to see more of that this year. “I’m hoping we get a lot of

people, local people, who can’t go on vacation and will come down to the fair even if they haven’t been here for a few years.” If they do, fair-goers will find one $5 admissions fee at the gate. Rides and grandstand events cost extra — but Savage points out that many visitors simply want to see the 4-H exhibits and animals.
Tradition
According to Jennifer O’Neal, the county’s 4-H extension educator, the majority of the area’s 650 4-Hers, ages 5 to 19, take part in the fair. They showcase performing arts skills, crafts including woodworking and sewing and they show and sell various animals. “Fair is to a 4-Her what the finals are to a basketball team,” said O’Neal. “They work all year long preparing for the opportunity to show what they’ve learned.” Young people who bring animals to the fair care for them from September to July. O’Neal said the experience

GREG DERUITER/LSJ. hones their care-taking and leadership skills and teaches budgeting and marketing techniques. “Most of the kids are down there all week, every day,” she said. Johnson said both of his children are in 4-H and take part in the fair. “4-H and FFA are two of the best leadership programs you can put your kids in as far as
PRE-FAIR GRANDSTAND SHOWS
Events begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 8 with Harness Horse Racing. At 6 p.m., IBRA Barrel Racers will take center stage. Admission for the day is just $4 and children 12 and under get in free. The competition continues on Saturday, July 9 at 4 p.m. when the horse pulls begin. The mini-mod tractor pulls round out the Pre-Fair festivities on Sunday, July 10, beginning at 2 p.m. Grandstand events continue throughout the week of the Fair, July 11-16.
I’m concerned,” he said. Older members, through their example, provide younger members leadership lessons. “A 13-year-old, to a 7 year old, is a hero in 4-H,” she explained. “That’s the magic of it.”
Optimistic
Savage said the animals and their young owners, the 4-H projects and their youthful creators, are reason enough for people to attend the fair. The tractor pulls, music, motor cross, rides and traditional fair food are usually attractions for out-of-town visitors. “People come out from Lansing, DeWitt, Okemos and Jackson,” said Savage. “We want them to keep coming.”

Architect selected HOT SHADES for school renovation — The architectural firm of Hobbs & Black Associates of Lansing has been selected by Charlotte Public Schools officials to complete all remaining design work relating to the district’s November 2010 voter approved bond proposal. The district had previously engaged the services of Beta Design of Grand Rapids. “We decided to seek a new design partner when two of Beta’s architects, the two individuals we had worked so closely with over the past two years, suddenly chose to leave the firm,” said CPS Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hipskind. “Fortunately for the district, it took place at a time when a smooth transition could be facilitated without affecting our previously approved budget. CHARLOTTE
We recently interviewed numerous design firms and because many of them participated in our original selection process, we were already quite familiar what they have to offer. Hobbs & Black was a close runner-up when we hired Beta. By hiring them, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to engage the services of local firms and vendors whenever possible.” Phase I of the district’s bond issue is under way at Parkview Elementary School and work will begin at Washington Elementary within the next two weeks. For information about CPS’ current district-wide improvement program, phone Mark Rosekrans, assistant superintendent of operations, at (517) 541-5113 or visit www.charlottebond2010.com.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Experience at St. Mary’s school was wonderful We wanted to say thank you to our community for supporting St. Mary’s School. Due to the amazing generosity of our community, friends and family we are able to extend St. Mary’s through middle school. We have three children who started preschool at St. Mary’s and I am so thankful for the opportunity to continue their education there. We are very fortunate to be part of a community that values a faith-based and strong academic education, small class sizes for individualized attention and collaborative assignments/projects where older students mentor younger ones. The environment at St. Mary’s allows the teachers to constantly think “outside of the box” and come up with creative and fun ways to stimulate and accelerate learning with increased retention. Each child is able to be individually challenged to rise to their potential and not sit idly in class. Thank you to everyone who has supported St. Mary’s School now and in the past. St. Mary’s has educated some of the strongest students for over 50
years. We also want to thank Father Francis Mossholder and principal Linda Yeager for always believing in us and being such solid role models for our youth. Even though summer vacation has just started, we are all looking forward to coming back to the place where we feel safe, our hearts are warmed and abilities are challenged. If you would like to keep updated on the wonderful news at St. Mary’s School, the Web site is www.stmarycharlotte.org.
Our local first responders (firefighters, sheriffs, local police, EMS, dispatchers, volunteers, etc.) are crucial to safe communities. Without them, our children cannot safely attend school, we cannot work, enjoy our neighborhoods or even remain safe inside our own homes. The FBI just reported that Michigan has three of the nation’s top 25 most dangerous cities. Flint is No. 1, Detroit is No. 2 and Lansing is No. 24! (Source: http://
www.businessinsider.com/most-dangerouscities-2011-5#) With the nation’s highest crime rates, do you support local public safety cuts in Michigan? If you value jobs, tourism, education and living in a safe neighborhood, please let your state representative, senator and the governor know you want local public safety to come first, not last. Laurie Raines, Eaton Rapids
Jim and Melissa Falk, Charlotte
Local public safety should come first As a wife, mother and lifelong resident of Eaton County, I’m concerned about some elected officials in our state capitol targeting our local public safety services for: • Dangerous funding cuts. • To re-write our Constitution. • To change existing laws justifying those cuts. I firmly believe those actions will achieve little more than endangering the public safety of our citizens.

CHARLOTTE — Art displays in the windows along Charlotte’s main street attracted lots of attention during Celebrate Charlotte, June 16-19. Viewers saw paintings done in water colors, acrylics, oils, pastels, photographs and sketches. Many not only viewed the paintings but also walked into the store to see what else might be of interest to them.
On Friday evening, Fay’s Evelyn Bay overflowed with people who had viewed the art work and who wanted to hear Don Sovey’s band, the only applicant in the music category to enter the competition for Best Artist. The Experience Art group wants to recognize and support art in all its forms — visual, musical, vocal, literary, or any other type of art expression that
might be used by artists to create something new. Twenty-two artists displayed their work in local businesses. All 22 artists competed for the title of Best Artist in Charlotte’s First Annual Art Walk. • First Place: Kelsey Adams, 17, of Charlotte. Kelsey received a check for $100. • Second Place: Becky Jennings, adult of Charlotte. Jennings received a
check for $50. • Third Place: Connie Miller, adult of Charlotte. Miller received a check for $25. The Experience Art group, sponsor and organizer of the Walk, reported that over 670 Art Walk ballots were picked up from various locations around town. The ballots included a detailed map showing the locations of each artist so
people could use them as guides for viewing the displays. Of the 670 people who picked up ballots, 150 chose to vote and turn their votes in. Stormi Stuler, current chair of Experience Art, announced the winners at the Pancake Breakfast at Fitch-Beach Airport on Sunday morning, June 19. ain, Rain, Rain go away, families want to play! As the 2011 summer season gears up, finally, with great summer weather in the forecast, Eaton County Parks offer a vast variety of features for citizens and guests to enjoy. The diversity of Eaton County Parks ranges from the roadside rest area on Battle Creek Highway just south of Charlotte (Tirrell Park) to historic Lincoln Brick Park on the Eaton/Clinton County borders just north of Grand Ledge. Most visitors relish and appreciate the wonders of Fitzgerald Park’s trails, picnic areas, playground, ball fields, Grand River access, Ledges Playhouse and disc (Frisbee) golf course. Unfortunately, vandals think it is funny to tip over trash barrels, deface signage, drive monster trucks on new mown grass fields, throw picnic tables into Fox Memorial Park lake, destroy entrance gates, cut safety buoy ropes, tip over vending machines and ignore safety signage to violate park rules. This pseudo sense of humor just does not cut it with respectful families and users. Park rangers have been

Those that want to enjoy Eaton County Parks will simply report your behavior to our staff. As UCLA Coach John Wooden once told his star player
Bill Walton about team grooming rules, as Walton protested, “we are really going to miss, you, Bill.” Walton decided to follow the rules. Local law enforcement officials have graciously offered their patrolling assistance to protect our visitors and resources. While common sense appears to be less than common with those set on destruction, one might not enjoy incarceration as an alternative to a park setting. Appealing for understanding and support.
