t was a no-go during Celebrate Charlotte Festival last month, but on Friday, July 22, fireworks are coming to town. The display, organized by the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled to take place around dusk at Fitch H. Beach Municipal Airport. Ann Garvey, executive director of the chamber, appeared before the Charlotte City Council at its July 11 meeting to obtain approval for the fireworks display — which they gave. Garvey said despite having the funds needed to bring the light show to this year’s Celebrate Charlotte Festival, organizers didn’t have enough time to gather all the necessary insurance and paperwork to pull it off. “I just could not dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s,” she said. “There were just too many things, and we wanted to do it right.” But this coming Friday Garvey said organizers plan to offer a solid fireworks display — at a cost of $5,500, all funds that

CHARLOTTE — A brand new pair of shoes can offer a youngster a good start to the school year. But Diane Sowle, executive director of the Eaton Clothing & Furniture Center, knows the small gesture means more to a needy local family, struggling to make ends meet. “Some of them struggle to keep a place rented,” said Sowle, of the almost 2,000 families in Barry and Eaton counties who shop at the Charlotte-based non-profit annually. “They don’t have money for shoes. If parents don’t have to worry about how they will pay for shoes for their children, that’s one more burden off their shoulders.” That’s the premise behind the center’s “Back to School” program, now in its 16th year. For three days, Aug. 18 to 20, registered clients with the center (who all meet income requirements) can bring their children to the event for bundles that include new shoes, underwear, hygiene products and school supplies. Sowle estimates that 800 people will take part this year — the majority are from Charlotte and Eaton Rapids. Last year, the non-profit spent $20,000 on the items they gave away — shopping sale items at places like Meijer, Dunham’s and Playmakers.
Marilyn Block (left) and Diane Sowle, executive director of the Eaton Clothing & Furniture Center tape up a comforter to be on display at the Charlotte nonprofit. Sowle said about 25 percent of the non-profits $70,000 annual budget comes from grants. That source of income has decreased nearly 50 percent in the last five years — while the client list continues to rise. “We do a lot on faith,” said Sowle. “We’ve always had generous donors who’ve stepped up to support us.”

But this year the center is prepared to raise its own funds for the “Back to School” effort. Thanks to the efforts of Marilyn Block, an intern at the center for the past year, a charity 5K run/walk is being organized for Aug. 6 in Charlotte. every July 4th weekend. Bonney’s shows range in length from nine to 25 minutes. “Our greatest satisfaction from a fireworks show is the response from the crowd,” said Bonney, who works with his wife and other family members to produce the displays. “We see a fireworks show as a presentation.” Bonney said he began in the fireworks “by accident,” helping long-time and now deceased friend Carl Geller orchestrate a fireworks display in Eaton Rapids one year. “It just sort of evolved,” said Bonney, who directed nearly 50 shows last year. During the July 4 weekend he organized 12 of them.

that demands safety above all else. “We do everything with the idea of being safe,” he said. The branch office provides regular training of employees. “Pretty much the biggest safety issue in fireworks is complacency,” added Bonney. “Trying to guard against complacency is a big issue. I don’t care if it’s a big show or a little show, we always talk about safety.” Beyond that, Bonney said he takes pride in the choreography and artistic feel of his shows. He said people always react with interest when he tells them what he does — and he understands it. “They’re beautiful,” he admits of fireworks. “The noise they make is emotional for some people. There are emotions that are brought back for some people when you see fireworks. You think about a show you saw 30 years ago.” For more details about the July 22 fireworks show contact the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce at 543-0400.

Conway picked to fill vacancy Rachel Greco rgreco@lsj.com
CHARLOTTE — The city council unanimously voted July 11 to appoint Lloyd Conway to fill a vacant seat on the city council. Conway, a city resident since 2003, and Joseph Gutierrez, a retired computer analyst, applied for the seat, vacated by Bill Arnold last month. Council members interviewed Conway and applicant Joseph Gutierrez at their July 11 meeting. Conway is a retired member of the Army
National Guard and teaches at Spring Arbor University. Conway told officials that dealing with the economic recession is a pressing issue for city officials. “While some people believe we’re in a recovery mode, I personally am of the opinion that we’re in a temporary pause,” Conway said. “It’s better to be pessimistic than optimistic when planning for the future.” He said officials will have to focus on maintaining basic city services in spite of the decline.
“I think even when the economy turns, we’re still going to have a great amount of need facing the community.” Several officials said they believed both Conway and Gutierrez, a retired state employee, were qualified to fill the remainder of the vacant term. The seat is up for reelection in November. “I’m pleased with the experience of both men,” said councilman Wayne Kruger. Councilwoman Mary Jean Baker found fault with neither but did express a
desire to see a local business person fill the seat. The term is up this November — along with Smith’s two-year term as mayor, Mary Jean Baker’s four-year seat serving District 1 and Scott Cuttle’s four-year term in District 2. Conway will have the option of running for reelection. When officials asked if he would be interested in running he said he might. “I’m open,” said Conway. “After a few meetings, I should know whether or not it’s for me.”

EATON COUNTY - State Rep. Deb Shaughnessy, R-Charlotte, recently invited two Eaton County residents to testify before the Michigan House Insurance Committee about the ineffectiveness and high cost of federal flood insurance. Shaughnessy, who is vice chair of the panel, also expressed her concerns regarding the impact flood insurance premiums have on local residents and municipalities. “I am very concerned about how the requirement to have flood insurance affects people in the area,” Shaughnessy said to the panel. “I have been to several local government units that have been asked to opt into this as well. This issue impacts many residents in Eaton County, and it takes a lot of money to fight it.” At the June 9 hearing, state Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, advocated making significant reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program with Congresswoman Candice Miller. Eaton County residents Keith
Haley and Albert Surink testified at the hearing, criticizing the criteria used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to put their homes into the flood zone. The designation required them to purchase federal flood insurance. “In November 2010 my mortgage company said I had to have flood insurance,” Haley said. “FEMA redrew the lines and my mortgage company said I was in the flood plain.” The flood insurance policy costs the Bellevue resident $800, or about $66 a month. He explained flood insurance is an unaffordable luxury considering the economic circumstances under which he and his wife live. “That might not sound like much, but my wife and I are surviving on Social Security,” Haley noted. “And I have a small state pension.” As a result, Haley has cut his telephone service and has reduced his bills for trash and electricity, he told the panel. Surink, of Dimondale, told the
Call the professionals for all your heating and cooling needs.
committee he had been fighting the flood-plain designation for six years without success. “There is nothing in this program that works,” Surink said. “If a structure has water frontage, it is required to have flood insurance.” Surink explained to the committee that his property was designated as a flood plain by officials who used a hand-drawn map of his property overlaid by a satellite photograph of his land. Shaughnessy supports House Resolution 62, introduced by Forlini, which urges Congress to authorize states to work together in providing flood insurance as they deem appropriate and encourage government transparency. Forlini’s resolution acknowledges Miller’s bill, H.R. 435, to eliminate the National Flood Insurance Program in 2013, and petitions Congress to make significant reforms. The Insurance Committee recommended the resolution to the full House, which adopted the resolution on June 21.

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Police Department handled over 150 incidents the week of July 4 to July 10. Anyone with information regarding these incidents can contact the Charlotte Police Department at (517) 543-1552. Here are just a few of those incidents: • July 5 — Charlotte police were called to a residence for a home invasion. Officers arrived and made contact with the caller who stated a subject had come into his house. Officers took photographs and collected a statement from the caller and were able to locate the suspect who was arrested and lodged at the jail for home invasion. • July 6 — Charlotte police were called to an apartment house because the subjects at the house were being loud outside on the front porch of the house. Officers arrived and immediately recognized one of the subjects
who was known to have a warrant for his arrest. The subject was arrest on the outstanding warrant and the other subjects were told to keep the noise down. Less than an hour later officers were called back to the same house because the subjects were being loud again. When officers arrived they located another subject at the residence who they knew to have a conditional bond release from jail. The subject’s bond release stated he was to not have contact with a subject who lived at the house and he was not to be drinking. The subject was seen in contact with the protected person and was intoxicated as well. The subject was arrested and lodged at the jail for violating his conditional bond release. • July 6 — Charlotte police were called to a local hotel for a verbal domestic dispute between a male and female. When officers arrived the female told them the male had a warrant for his arrest out of another
county and jumped out the hotel window and ran into nearby woods to hide prior to officers arriving. The subject was not able to be located and officers cleared the scene. A couple hours later officers received a return call to the hotel because the male had returned and was starting problems with other subjects. Officers arrived and were able to locate the subject who was arrested on the outstanding warrant. • July 8 and July 10 — Charlotte Police were called about purses being stolen from vehicles during daylight hours. One theft occurred outside of a local funeral home and another outside of a local church. Please keep your vehicles locked and valuables out of sight. Officers from the Charlotte Police Department ask that if you see or hear anything suspicious at night in your neighborhood, call and report it.

CHARLOTTE — Residents will have the chance to hear healthy cooking tips from a professional this week — and enjoy a free meal in the process. Celebrity chef Mark Anthony will be presenting his “Free Dinner and A Message” cooking show on Wednesday, July 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Adventist Christian School, located at 1510 S. Cochran Rd. Anthony, an executive chef based in Las Vegas, Nevada, has also been a personal chef/caterer to stars like Jack Nicklaus, Joan Jett, STYX, Journey and Eddie Murry. He is also a regular on 3ABN worldwide television. Lynne Nickless is a eight-
year member of the local church. She said Anthony, who lost 80 pounds after going on a plant-based diet, contacted the church about visiting. She said he will be offering similar programs in Marshall and Kalamazoo as well. Nickless said Anthony’s program fits in very well wit the 70-member congregation’s focus on health. About half the church’s members are vegetarian and meat consumption is discouraged, she added. “We think people ought to be healthy physically, spiritually and socially,” explained Nickless. During Anthony’s program he will cook a free meal for guests and offer information about vegetarian and vegan cooking and plant-based health and nutrition.
Celebrity chef Mark Anthony will be presenting his “Free Dinner and A Message” cooking show locally. Area animal hospital gets AAHA recertification W e here at Town & Country Animal Hospital were recently recertified for AAHA. AAHA stands for American Animal Hospital Association. There are fewer than 10 percent of all veterinary hospitals in the United States that are AAHA certified and only five in midMichigan, including MSU Small Animal Hospital. Town & Country has been certified for over 35 years. We are a three-year certified hospital. The certification process involves 900 points that are all demonstrated and in writing. These points are awarded for different topics and standards. These include surgery, medical records, client communication, staff safety and pet care in the hospital. We have found a profound influence on our medical records from AAHA standards. We are required to include body condition scoring and pain
GUEST COLUMN Dr. Karen Hinkle
scoring on every patient presented (including well patients). We are required to have a protocol for transmitting information from us to referral hospitals. We have to document our test results in different methods so that they are accessible to our staff and therefore our owners in a timely fashion. There are standards for client education so that problems can be solved long term wherever possible. The documentation of the results of therapy help decide what will work on your pet in the future or on other pets just like him with similar medical problems. Vaccine history alone may be okay and within the letter of the law but a thorough medical history will help keep your pet at its best. Anesthesia standards for AAHA include documenting the
anesthetic event. If your pet has an unexpected result from surgery then the thorough record will help stop that from happening in the future or determine if your pet may have a particular problem (like hemophilia). We are required to have electronic and/ or licensed human monitoring on each patient under anesthesia. We use inhalation anesthesia. We find this to be a big difference in pet care. Is injectable anesthesia alone inferior? There is no medical evidence of that. Is it more difficult to keep a steady plain of anesthesia over 15 minutes? Yes. Is it more likely to have post surgical vomiting and nausea? Yes. Is it more stressful on the liver and kidney systems than including inhalation anesthesia? Yes.
Play with the Lugnuts!
“It gives us peace of mind to give our pet owners peace of mind in their pets’ care.”
These are reasons why we use inhalation anesthesia on people now instead of old injectable anesthesia. Inhalation anesthesia is required for AAHA standards. We also have to document the machines being serviced and calibrated. This means the proper amounts of anesthesia are being used. Do clinics that are not AAHA certified document their anesthetic calibrations? Yes. Do ALL AAHA certified hospitals document this information? Yes. We spend a lot of energy and time to keep ourselves up to a national standard so we like to share the information we receive as AAHA certified. We are required continuing education every year for every
doctor and nurse at the hospital. Do other hospitals participate in continuing education? Yes. Is it required in the state of Michigan to continue to educate yourself in order to keep your license? No. Does EVERY AAHA certified hospital participate in continuing education? Yes. In fact, we are headed to the AAHA conference this year in Toronto to stay as well informed as we can on the best way to care for your animal. We enjoy being AAHA certified, it is a challenge to keep up good pet care standards. It gives us peace of mind to give our pet owners peace of mind in their pets’ care.
