V.F.W. post bridging gap between veterans Rachel Greco

| rgreco@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — Bridging the gap between older veterans and those who served in recent conflicts have been a twopart effort at V.F.W. Post #2406. For four years, the local V.F.W. has been sending care packages overseas and hosting parties for the loved ones of military personnel serving overseas. At the same time, the post has welcomed about 20 new members in the last three years — many of whom took part recent conflicts and service in the Middle East. If you ask Post Commander Tedd Craven about the connection he said they both further the same goal — one of mutual understanding. Craven can still recall returning from Vietnam and receiving exactly that from other soldiers in a hospital were he was recovering from extensive injuries. “Spending that time in the hospital with other wounded soldiers helped me,” said Craven. “They would challenge me to do things.” Today, Craven said the local V.F.W. can be a supportive outlet for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. But, he said, that must come with a minimal pressure “welcome” for new members. “These guys are coming in just to find a place to relax a little bit,” he said. “You can’t push people into getting involved.”

UPCOMING V.F.W. POST #2406 EFFORTS • “Military Families and Community Picnic” on Saturday, July 30 from noon to 4 p.m. at the post, located at 695 Lansing Rd. in Charlotte. The free event is open to everyone. Food, games, a bounce house, dunk tank, military police and emergency vehicles will be included. A raffle will follow the picnic. • A regular and closed panel discussion for members of “Operation Enduring Freedom” and “Operation Iraqi Freedom” is being planned for mid-August at the post. Any veterans involved in either military effort who are interested in being included should contact post member Jason Egan at (517) 444-0602 for details.

Struggling at home After serving in Desert Storm, Charlotte resident and Army National Guardsman Jason Egan was on a vehicle in 2006 that was hit by a roadside bomb in Iraq. The blast killed one fellow solider and extensively injured Egan. He also suffered cognitive brain damage. Egan said he first visited the Charlotte V.F.W. post at age 19, after Desert Storm. “Everyone in there was the age of my parents,” he recalled. “There was no way for me to relate to these people.” But today Egan sees things differently.

School officials plan to discuss aquatic millage July 24, 2011

CHARLOTTE — Schools officials could soon discuss asking voters to approve a new tax to help support the Charlotte Aquatic Center.

According to Charlotte schools Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hipskind, the Board of Education has expressed an interest in talking about a possible tax request. Hipskind said that discussion will be slated for an upcoming

board meeting. The news comes just a few months after officials decided against closing the facility — a move that stood to save the school district an estimated $170,000 — off the table during the

2011-2012 budget debates. The center opened in 2004 and is still being financed by a local millage. Don Sovey, the district’s newly retired financial advisor, is now a member of the Friends of the Charlotte Aquatic Center group.

The group’s aim is to support the facility’s growth and increased use. Sovey said during public budget hearings this May many of See MILLAGE, Page 13

By David Morgan STAFF WRITER Been following the gold and silver market lately? Well if you have a jewelry box, a lock box full of gold or a coffee can full of old coins, you should be, according to Ohio Valley Refinery spokesperson John Miller. “The gold and silver markets have not been this strong for over 30 years” said Miller. Typically when the U.S. dollar is weak and the economy is flat, gold and silver markets soar. “That’s good news if you are sitting on a few gold necklaces or an old class ring” says Miller. Starting Tuesday at 9am and every day this week through Saturday, the Ohio Valley Refinery is setting up a satellite refinery right here in Charlotte at the Eaton County Fairgrounds. During their 5 day stay, anyone can bring gold, silver or platinum items and turn them in for immediate payment, explains John Miller. “Just about everybody has some amount of gold or silver just lying around collecting dust and this week anybody can sell theirs direct to our refinery. Typically selling direct to a refinery is reserved for larger wholesale customers like jewelry stores, pawn shops and laboratories” says Miller. “We are changing how business is done,” he explains “we want to do business with everybody so we took our business to the streets”. “Our teams visit various cities around the country hosting 5 day events and allowing the general public to take advantage of our services. “The turnout has been overwhelming” says Miller. “Usually

each day is busier than the previous day. It seems once people come to us and sell something, they are so amazed what an old ring or gold coin is worth, they go home and start digging around for more and telling relatives, friends and neighbors. It’s like a feeding frenzy by the third day. People line up with everything from gold jewelry to sterling silver flatware sets to old coins. I think during this bad economy everybody can use extra money, but most people say they are taking advantage of selling direct to our refinery because of the higher prices we pay”. During this special event, anyone is welcome to bring all types of gold, silver and platinum to the refinery and turn it in for instant payment. The types of items they will accept include all gold jewelry, gold coins, gold ounces, dental gold, old coins made before 1965 including silver dollars, halves, quarters and dimes, anything marked “sterling” including flatware sets, tea pots, silver bars, silver ounces and all industrial precious metals. What should you expect if you go to the event to sell your gold and/or silver? Just gather up all gold, silver and platinum in any form. If you are not sure if it’s gold or silver, bring it in and they will test it for free. When you arrive at the event you will be asked to fill out a simple registration card and will be issued a number. Seating will be available. When your number is called you will be escorted to a table where your

Public welcome! items will be examined, tested and sorted. This only takes a few minutes, using their expertise and specialized equipment. Items will be counted and/or weighed. The value of the items will be determined based on up to the minute market prices. Live feeds will be available at the event displaying current market prices of all precious metals. CHARLOTTE — The summer children’s programming at Charlotte Community Library got off to a quiet start 11 years ago. An average of 30 to 60 youngsters and parents would gather for outdoor events hosted by the library. They would enroll in the reading program in hopes of earning prizes. Fast forward to today. On July 19 the temperature surpassed 90 degrees, and heat warnings were issued. But the library’s “Summer in the Park” event at Oak Park brought out 190 people. The crowd watched “frisbee dogs” soar and catch flying discs. Moms socialized, toddlers played and older youth were captivated members of the audience. On average 235 people attend each Tuesday event, which always run from 11 a.m. to noon. Librarian Sally Siefert, the organizer behind summer kids programs, keeps sorted records for every year’s events. This summer, said Siefert, 430 kids are signed up for the summer reading program. And those park events — which offer farm animals, patriotic parades and magicians for free?

“I think that it has changed into almost like a destination day,” admitted Siefert. “A mom told me the other day, ‘We just make Tuesday our library day.’” That would include Charlotte mom Tammy Caswell and her three kids, ages 2 to 11. “We try and make a point to go,” she said. “We do it a lot for the kids to be able to interact with other kids. The relationships with people are important.”

of the group and will begin his own outreach to veterans who served in both “Operation Enduring Freedom” and “Operation Iraqi Freedom” next month. A regular panel discussion will be led by Egan and hosted at the V.F.W. post in Charlotte — offering new veterans a safe and private discussion with others who served in the same operations. Egan said new vets struggle to adjust to life at home after their service. “Everyone said that when I came home I was different,” he explained. “I recognized that I had changed. But the friends I’d had when I left, they’re not my friends anymore. They changed, too.” Egan said many new vets struggle with post traumatic stress disorder now, but haven’t reached out for help. “I see a lot of people that have it and are in denial.”

Later this month the post will do more — hosting the fifth annual “Military Families and Community Picnic.” Last year upwards of 200 people attended. V.F.W. member Mike Smith began organizing them, and other outreach efforts in 2007. He suggested the projects and began to chair them after both his stepson and son-in-law were deployed during the holidays. “We didn’t celebrate that Christmas,” said his wife Gayle. “Christmas day we spent the day baking cookies for the troops. It was really hard to celebrate because part of us wasn’t there.” Mike said those feelings helped commit him to the projects — which include the upcoming picnic and sending of more than 2,000 care packages to soldiers overseas. The post, said Mike, backs the effort and volunteers. In its beginning they even footed the bill for shipping fees.

Now four years in though, the donations and community-wide support is strong. Residents and businesses from all over the state contribute to overseas outreach. It’s going so well that Mike said the organization hopes to host a “welcome home” for the 46th Military Police Unit, which includes 120 soldiers. The event is being planned for September. In the meantime, Mike said a link is beeing created between, not only the community and service men and women, but between veterans and them. “I don’t want these troops and their families going through what us ‘Nam veterans did,” he said. And Craven said Smith’s dedication, along with the efforts of other V.F.W. members will hopefully help grow the organization’s ranks — making it a resource for future veterans as well. “That’s probably the most important thing we can do, because if we don’t the post will die,” said Craven.

Police arrest, charge Benton Twp. man Laura Misjak lmisjak@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — A Benton Township man with 17 previous felony convictions is being held w i t h o u t bond in connection with the death of an 83-yearold Midland man who has Vercruysse been missing for three weeks. Patrick Alan Vercruysse, 43, was arraigned July 18 on four felony counts, including murder as well as a misdemeanor after police found what they believe to be the remains of Seth Charles Thompson on Saturday at a Benton Township property. Thompson, a retired oral surgeon from Midland, has been missing since June 25. At a news conference Monday, Eaton County

Sheriff Mike Raines said deputies received information about Thompson that led them to obtain a search warrant for a Benton Township property, near Potterville, where human remains were found. Raines said he is confident the human remains are Thompson’s, but said he believes Thompson was killed at a home in Roxand Township, west of Grand Ledge, and later transported to Benton Township. Raines said the medical examiner will make further determinations. Raines did not release information about how Vercruysse and Thompson might have known each other. He would not confirm whether Vercruysse lived at the property in Benton Township where the remains were found.

Other charges Aside from the murder charge, Vercruysse also faces charges of firstdegree home invasion, unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle and stolen weapon charges.

Vercruysse, in an orange jail-issued jumpsuit, spoke quietly when asked if he understood the charges by Eaton County Magistrate Brien Fortino. Vercruysse was denied bond and assigned courtappointed attorney G. Michael Hocking, who could not be reached Monday for comment.

‘A flight risk’ Vercruysse, who is on parole, has previously been jailed on drug, fraud, fleeing and other charges out of Bay, Midland, Roscommon, Isabella, Clare and Ingham counties, according to state records and Eaton County officials. Eaton County Prosecutor Jeff Sauter requested Vercruysse’s bail be denied during Monday’s arraignment because he is “a flight risk and a danger to the community.” Fortino agreed and denied bond. A preliminary examination, which determines whether there’s enough evidence for a case to go to trial, is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 29.

Schools approve contracts with two different groups Rachel Greco rgreco@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — School officials have approved contracts with the district’s administrators and food service without wage increases. The Charlotte Board of Education July 18 approved a contract for the 2010/2011 school year, which concluded in June, with its school building principals and assistant principals were given an additional “off schedule payment” of $237 each for that budget year, but no increase in salaries occurred.

District Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hipskind said the contract was settled late because of the uncertain funding to school districts from the state. “We’d like to do them a couple of years out but the funding is so dicey that you have no idea what you’re working with.” The board also approved a new two-year agreement with the Food Service Association for the district, which includes 16 employees. No wage increase will be given to the group during the 2011/2012 school year, according to Mark

Rosekrans, associate superintendent for operations. Under the new contract, wage discussions for food service staff will be reopened for the 2012/2013 year. Hipskind herself received no wage increase for the 2010/2011 school year. Her annual salary is currently $111,800. She said that will be something all groups can expect in the upcoming year — however it is dependent on negotiations with each. Contracts with the district’s teacher union and transportation workers are still be negotiated.

Auvenshine benefit to aid Sparrow Hospital LANSING — The late Tom Auvenshine, a resident of Charlotte, may have lost the fight against cancer, but his family continues the battle by raising funds to benefit local patients and their loves ones. A “Tee Off For Tom” four-person golf benefit scramble is set for July 30 at Centennial Acres Golf Course in Sunfield. Proceeds will go to the Sparrow Foundation to be used at Sparrow, where an inpatient room was recently dedicated to Auvenshine. “The Sparrow staff was amazing,” said Auvenshine’s son, Adam. “These nurses deal with so many people every day, but they befriended him and took time to go to my

dad’s funeral.” Auvenshine, an area farmer and UPS employee, was a special person to many in the mid-Michigan region, including the Sparrow staff who cared for him for three months. His family said his friendly and outgoing nature made him popular with many coaches and staff at Michigan State University who came to know him as “Trinket Tom” for all the UPS pens, cups, hats and T-shirts he was known to hand out. His family recently made a generous donation to the Sparrow Foundation and hopes funds raised in the golf benefit might be used to create patient and family enrichment rooms. The Sparrow Cancer

Center offers comprehensive services including surgery, chemo, radiation and drug therapies. Staff is committed to a unique, compassionate approach that works to instill hope and healing, as well as addressing the physical needs of patients. “It takes very special caregivers to take care of people who are going through cancer treatment. I want them to have everything they need,” Adam Auvenshine said. To register for the “Tee off for Tom” benefit golf scramble, visit www.bigtee.org/sparrowfoundation.html or call Centennial Acres Golf Course at (517) 566-8055. — From Sparrow Hospital

Don’t let divisions into your church community Romans 16:17: “I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.” I have over the past few weeks become aware of a “Modern Math” formula. The formula is simply this: Division = Subtraction. What God allowed me to

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Marc S. Livingston see was the reality of the above verses. I know of at least three churches that were once vibrant places of worship and evangelistic in outreach. Then...Divisions and obstacles came into the churches like the little foxes that spoil the vine. (Song of Solomon 2:15) The fire of God was quenched. These churches became cold, divided, and now are in

a constant “repair” mode. Two of them that I drove by had more grass growing in the parking lot than they had cars! The once alive churches are still open, but just barely. (Revelation 3:1, 2) What caused the division and obstacles that are contrary to real Christianity? To put it bluntly, it is sin! — The sin of self desire (I want it my way or the highway). It is a deception from the truth of the word of God. This division is often wrapped up in things like Bible versions, music,

clothes and the list goes on and on. I recently made this strong statement to someone in our church: “If you make ____________ the issue, than the devil will make _____________ the issue!” Early in my ministry, I once had a man tell me that if he did it would be okay, but don’t let anyone else try it! That man had the church in a headlock and was strangling the life from it! The Bible tells us in Titus 3:10: “Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that,

have nothing to do with him.” The other part of that “Modern Math” formula is this: Subtraction = Addition. If we would do like the Bible says and focus in on the teaching and life living according to God’s word, and if we would stay on guard, and if we would warn and then keep away from that person. Then just like the gossiper who cannot gossip if no one is there to listen, the divisive person can’t divide unless there is two! Eventually the gossiper

and divisive person will either get right with God or they will move on and away! That man left the church. Subtraction = Addition! Unfortunately not the case at the grass covered parking lot churches! The divisive people still are dividing, and Division = Subtraction! Don’t let this happen to your church. Grass belongs in the yard, not the parking lot! Think about it. Marc S. Livingston is the pastor at Chester Gospel Church.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Great Start office a good first step in MI I was thrilled to see Gov. Rick Snyder create an Office of Great Start within state government. What a gift for Michigan’s children and ultimately for the state’s economy. The old way of thinking says children magically start learning when they enter kindergarten. These days we know better. Research confirms that learning begins

at birth and children who get off to a great start tend to do better in school and life. The key now, of course, is to let the new Office of Great Start mature and grow, which will require continuing support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The pay-off will be substantial. Michigan is on the cusp of developing a nationally-recognized early childhood

EATON COUNTY — Now is the time to schedule a back-to-school physical and immunization appointment. Children entering kindergarten and sixth grade and any child changing school districts will need to meet immunization requirements before staring school this fall. Children entering kindergarten have always been required to receive booster doses of their childhood vaccines. In the past, this meant an additional dose of DTaP, Polio, and MMR vaccine before starting kindergarten. The newest school rules, initiated in 2010, also require two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or a history of chickenpox disease. Most children received their first dose of varicella vaccine at age one. Sixth grade students have been required to receive a dose of Tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccine. Current school rules, initiated in 2010, now require those sixth grade students who are at least 11 years of age receive a dose of Tdap (which provides a booster of pertussis/whooping cough with the Tetanus and diph-

theria), a dose of Meningococcal vaccine, and two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or a history of chickenpox disease. Most children received their first dose of varicella vaccine at age one. Any child changing school districts will be required to have the above vaccines as appropriate for their age. These are the required vaccines for school-entry. Some vaccines are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but are not required for school entry. Your physician may also recommend Hepatitis A and influenza vaccines for your kindergartner. They may recommend Hepatitis A, influenza, and Human Papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for your adolescent. Your child will also be assessed for MMR and Hepatitis B vaccines. The Barry-Eaton District Health Department will be hosting special school-shot clinics in July and August. Please call (269) 945-9516, extension 129 (Barry) or (517) 541-2660 (Eaton) for an appointment. —The Barry-Eaton District Health Department
