Voters to decide Mobile Meals marks 40 years school millage Rachel Greco rgreco@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — This November voters will be asked to decide a millage that would, in part, help fund operations at the Charlotte Aquatic Center. The Charlotte Board of Education voted 7-0 at its Aug. 15 to put the .5 mills request on the ballot this fall. The proposed millage would cost residents owning a house with a taxable value of $100,000 an estimated $25 a year if it passes. The five-year parks and recreation millage would also help fund the continuation of summer ball programs offered by the school district. In addition it would lower fees charged to community groups that opt to use school district fields and facilties. According to Charlotte District Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hipskind, if the proposed measure fails the aquatic center will likely be closed. The facility was opened in 2004 and its construction is still being financed by a local millage. But officials say they need to generate over $200,000 more annually at the center to pay for its operation. A marketing plan, aimed at boosting the center’s use,

“It’s very important to keep the pool open so our students will learn to swim with a life-long skill that will save lives. This pool keeps kids active and provides good activities for them. Our family has had one wish, and that is for all our grandchildren to learn to swim.” RON SCHULTHEISS Charlotte Board of Education president

has already been created to help make the facility more self-sustaining by the end of five years. In the meantime, Hipskind said she hopes voters will support the funding request. “I learned a long time ago not to forecast anything I don’t have control over,” said Hipskind, of her thoughts on the millage’s chances. “I would hope that people would realize what See MILLAGE, Page 7

CHARLOTTE — Mobile Meals, Inc. of Charlotte is proof that grass roots efforts can render powerful results. The organization is 40 years old this year and organizers are celebrating its humble beginnings — an idea that then local physician Dr. B.P. Brown shared with a local group of women. Linda Foster, president of the Mobile Meals Board of Directors, remembers hearing what Brown had to say when he approached the General Federation of Women’s Clubs-Charlotte. “He brought the need to us,” she said. “He said people could go home from the hospital sooner if they had help with meals.” The concept — delivering meals to those in need — was relatively new. Although there were similar community efforts elsewhere, Meals on Wheels, the government-supported program now in place, hadn’t existed in 1971. GFWC partnered with Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital, which prepared and prepped both a hot and cold meal every day for each of the program’s 12 clients. Sandy Maatsch still volunteers to deliver meals and served on the group’s founding board. She said those involved

Staff at HGB’s kitchen dish out meals to be delivered in Charlotte, part of Mobile Meals, Inc. of Charlotte. The effort is celebrating 40 years. RACHEL GRECO/LCN in establishing Mobile Meals used contacts in the medical community to build clients. They sought advice from others and never once second-guessed the effort. “We’re women,” said Maatsch. “We just jumped in with both feet and did it. We weren’t intimidated.”

Going strong Today, they still aren’t. Help for grandparents caring for grandchildren Seniors who are full-time caregivers for children are faced with many challenges. It is important for caregivers to focus on parenting, but also to remember to take care of themselves. The Kinship Care Respite Program is a resource offered through the Tri County Office on Aging. The purpose of the Kinship Care Respite Program is to give the full-time caregiver over age 55 a break from their parenting responsibilities. This is accomplished by helping to arrange and pay for an activity for their child to attend through an appropriate provider.

There is little or no cost to eligible caregivers to participate in this program. The program is funded by the Federal Older Americans Act Grant and provided to Tri County Office on Aging through the Office of Services to the Aging. Referrals may come from the caregiver, friends, neighbors, agencies and others in the community by calling Mary Pride at (517) 887-1355

Foster said the program’s future longevity is very promising. “I think we’ll make it to at least 50 or 75 years,” she said. “I don’t know what other organization you can be in that you don’t have to fund raise, you don’t have to go to a lot of meetings. There aren’t a lot of demands but it’s so rewarding.” Maatsch said she can’t believe its 40 years old. “Time goes by so quickly. However, he said the committee will be making informative presentations to any local group “willing to listen,” in the next few months. Sovey said the pool does meet a need in the community. “There are many people that ultize that facility, particuarly senior citizens and the elderly,” he said. “The other issue is that young children need to be taught how to swim.” Sovey said he believes officials have a good chance of making the aquatic center self-sustaining if they Generating support fufill the five-year marketing plan for Don Sovey is a member of a new the facility. “Save Our Pool” committee that has “It’s going to take work,” he added. been formed by residents to advocate “It’s going to take hard work, like for the millage’s passage. anything else.”
