CHARLOTTE — Kevin Munroe, 19, admits the pace of a traditional classroom isn’t for him. The local resident hit a wall his freshman year at Charlotte High School. “I was lazy,” he recalled. The last three years were spent at the school district’s alternative education program, the Learning Center — where he said he began loving school again. “It really turned my life around,” he explained. And this fall Munroe, along with over 60 students, moved from that program to it’s replacement. Relevant Academy is a new public school program under the jurisdiction of the Eaton Intermediate School District — those enrolled live all over the county. Located in what was Galewood Elementary, the school district closed the building this summer, Relevant Academy is based on a new approach to reaching 16 to 19 year-olds who have dropped out of high school. Relying on a largely on-line curriculum and a non-traditional classroom setting, the academy demands its 150 students take responsibility for advancing their high school education.

Students at Eaton County’s Relevant Academy work on their courses in class. The program is located at what was formerly Charlotte’s Galewood Elementary. RACHEL GRECO/LCN

In their hands Angie Zeller, the associate superintendent of EISD and now the director of Relevant Academy, said students enrolled spend the first three weeks of school attending all-day, weekly class time. But after that, students are only required to spend six hours a week at school. They are instead loaned lap tops and expected to progress in their chosen courses on their own time. What it amounts to, said Zeller, is an expected 30 hours a week of learning time and a ton of personal

responsibility. “The idea is that it’s their time,” explained Zeller. “As efficiently as they can get through their course work, they can take their next course.” Munroe expects to be at the academy through this school year. He should have his diploma by then and is already taking classes at Lansing Community College as well. The structure of Relevant Academy is something he’s still adjusting to. Instead of standard classrooms, students move between four rooms, each

and more efficient as we understand their equipment and their district,” added Rosekrans. “It takes time.” Some parents are seeing improvements thus far. Vicki Tamez, whose two children ride the bus to Potterville, said the bus hasn’t arrived late to their stop yet this past week. “In the beginning it was not very good,” admitted Tamez. “But they added another bus to this route so my kids have been making it to school on time.”

Communication Donahue said school officials communicated the transportation change to parents through mailings, automated phone calls and the district’s Web site. Donahue urged parents to contact the Charlotte transportation department as well, at 543-3400. Meanwhile, he has fielded concerns from parents and communicated directly with Rosekrans.

Backs decision Both Donahue and Rosekrans say the move to share and contract for services is an important way to save and generate funds for a school district. Rosekrans said although this is Charlotte’s first time providing transportation services for another district, it has provided food and leadership services to other district’s in the past. Potterville isn’t new to the concept either. This year the district shares a Special Education Director with Maple Valley schools. The district also contract s for a business manager services with the Eaton Intermediate School District. “It’s the right thing for school districts to be doing,” said Donahue, who added that service-sharing helps make Potterville eligible for additional funding from the state. “This will work out and it’s the right thing to do,” he added.

“This is a new thing for both districts,” he said. “But we expect to correct the issues shortly.”

ing one’s self-esteem. Students work independently but have access to four teachers, each specializing in a core subject area, Zeller explains. So far, Munroe’s impression is positive. “You do get more time with a subject, if you need it,” he said. “I think it works as long as you apply yourself. They give you lap tops, they give you wireless and it’s on you.”

Changing a trend The academy adheres to the same Michigan Merit Curriculum as a traditional high school, but Zeller said students believe Relevant’s approach will produce better results. “The traditional learning environment doesn’t work for these kids,” said Zeller. “I do feel like this will be successful.” What academy staff hope to change is Eaton County’s high school dropout rate, now at 23 percent. “Almost a quarter of the students is a large number no matter what you compare it to,” added Zeller. Relevant teacher Eric Emery taught at Charlotte schools’ Learning Center for 13 years before joining the new program. He points to two key factors in Relevant’s likely success. First, he said, a traditional classroom is the wrong environment for

reaching students who struggle with a standard schedule. Second, Emery points out that by 2025 most major universities will likely rely heavily on Web-based courses. “Even though we’re being innovative, we’re really giving them a chance to do what will be expected of them in the future,” he said. Relevant Academy utilizing programs like Skype and E-mail to allow students constant, but virtual, access to teachers, he said. “A lot of the students feel so much more comfortable communicating that way.” Munroe said he’s as ready as he’s ever to earn a high school diploma. His aim is to go into architecture and transfer from Lansing Community College to a four-year university after he earns a diploma. “My motivation is to get out of high school, get to college and do what I want to do,” he said. That kind of dedication is not a surprise Emery. He said the students at Relevant academy are bright and motivated. “When you send kids from a high school to an alternative ed., and ask them to do the same thing you’re setting them up for failure,” said Emery. “These kids are smart, and they want structure. They’ve always wanted that. Here we can give them what they need.”

Can Do! meets Sept. 27 CHARLOTTE — Mobilizing skills and talents in life and work so one can achieve its business goals will be at the heart of the message shared with local entrepreneurs at Can Do’s annual meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eaton Area Senior Center, 804 S. Cochran, Charlotte. Headlining the evening, entitled “Brewing Up Business,” will be guest speaker and Lansing’s very own Leslie Charles, a professional speaker and entrepreneur for over 30 years. It sat empty for two years until Tyler and Dana decided to renovate the house for their family home. Tyler and Dana envisioned a newer addition

The GFWC-Charlotte Women’s Club is extending an invitation to the public to participate in its Charlotte Fall Home Tour 2011, Sunday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The home of Tyler and Dana Pray at 318 S. Sheldon dates back to the prairie days of Charlotte. The original house was built as a typical two-story construction with several small rooms on the first floor and bedrooms upstairs. The construction year is unknown, but is thought to be in the early 1890s. The earliest records of Charlotte’s Genealogy Office list D. Louise Smith as a boarder in 1904. Miss Smith’s father, Nelson, owned the home next door at 312 S. Sheldon and both of these properties remained in the Smith name until the late 1940s. Miss Smith is listed as sole resident until 1948. In 1954, Ion Goodrich is identified as owner and occupant with his wife Betty and daughter Sue. It appears they divided 318 S. Sheldon into two apartCHARLOTTE

Playgrounds changes are done CHARLOTTE —

Charlotte Public Schools recently celebrated the completion of summer construction with ribbon cutting ceremonies at Parkview and Washington elementary schools. This marks the conclusion of the first phase of a three-phase program designed to deliver the $23.6 million in district-wide improvements approved by area voters on Nov. 2, 2010. Work at Washington Elementary included new playground equipment, black-top surfaces and a new student drop-off area featuring bus shelters.

Parkview also received new playground equipment and black-top surfaces as well as a new staff parking lot. The new boiler for the Aquatic Center was recently delivered and, according to district officials, its installation within the next few weeks will lead to significantly improved operating efficiencies and energy savings. All district-wide improvements are scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2013.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, beside skin cancer, and the death rate is higher than any other cancer except lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society about 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Some of the risk factors for developing breast cancer include: • aging • a personal history of breast cancer • a family history of breast cancer • obesity • never having children or having your first child after 35 years of age

A breast self-examination should be conducted every month. Report any breast changes right away to a health care provider.

Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital offers Full Field Digital Mammography, which provides many advantages over the traditional film exam. It gives the physician the ability to get a more detailed diagnosis of symptoms. Digital images give better visibility of the breast especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue. The images are also helpful for women with implants and women with known abnormalities.

Maple Valley joins Charlotte for fund raiser CHARLOTTE

Economic downturns often produce creative partnerships and such is the case with Charlotte High School and Maple Valley High School. Sharing talents and resources is one of the keys to longevity and success. The directors of the Charlotte High School and Maple Valley High School fall musicals know this first hand. Each year, budget cuts threaten to affect their productions. Late last school year, Betsy Foster, art teacher and director of the Charlotte High School fall production of “Beauty & the Beast,” had the idea for

a fundraiser. A concert of music from well-known Broadway shows with ticket sales directly benefiting “Beauty & the Beast.” Somewhere along the line, the collaboration with Sarah Shoemaker, director of Maple Valley High School’s fall production of “The Wedding Singer,” began and the two have been working together to put together an evening of entertainment. A Night of Broadway takes the stage on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 and are available through the box office at (517) 541-5690.

EATON RAPIDS - Charlotte dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in CAAC Gold boys’ soccer play, with a somewhat deceiving 4-1 loss at Eaton Rapids on Sept. 19. Deceiving because the game was much closer than the score would indicate, with two late Greyhound goals making a hard-fought, one-goal game look like a rout. Dylan Bratchi scored the only Charlotte goal, and Jake Dornbos made six saves in the contest for the Orioles. ER had the first clear scoring chance of the game on a corner kick, when a far-post header by Conner McCreery beat Dornbos but was cleared off the line by Charlotte defender Justin McConnell less than six minutes into the contest to keep it scoreless. The Oriole defense was caught off-guard on the first goal of the game, when a free kick at midfield by ER’s Sam Masteller sent Eric Freemire in clean on the Charlotte goal. His rightfooted shot banked off the post and in to make the

score 1-0 with 21:18 left in the first half. Charlotte tied the game just under seven minutes into the second half, when Jake Brown threaded a perfect through ball to Bratchi, who calmly tucked the ball inside the left-hand goal post ti make the score 1-1. Brown very nearly gave the Orioles the lead two minutes later, when a rightfooted rocked from about 35 yards out beat Greyhound keeper Jake Masteller, but crashed against the crossbar. Charlotte continued to put pressure on the Eaton Rapids defense, keeping the Greyhounds on the back foot until they managed to score on a counterattack with 24:38 left in the game. Freemire won possession in front of his own bench, and found Bryce Richards at the top of the Charlotte box. Richards fought off two defenders and placed the ball past a helpless Dornbos from about 15 yards out to make the score 2-1. The Orioles came close to tying the game about five minutes later, when Mikel Duque made some space on the left wing and sent the

ball hard across the face of the Greyhound goal, and it was cleared by the ER defense dangerously back across the goal mouth, but the crucial final touch did not come. Eaton Rapids freshman Chase Coss gave his team some breathing room with a fine individual effort, weaving through the Charlotte defense on the left wing, and then blasting a rocket just under the crossbar and inside the far post to make the score 3-1 with 15:13 left in the contest. Richards made the final score 4-1 with a 25-yard blast that scooted under Dornbos, with an assist by Freemire, with 1:19 left on the clock. “I don’t know what happened on that last one, probably skipped on him,” Charlotte head coach Ryan Sisco said, “but it was a close game. (We played) well, but not what we’re capable of yet. I think we got into playing a little too direct at times.” Eaton Rapids coach Matt Boersma said that the final score was somewhat flattering to his team. “I give Charlotte a lot of credit,” Boersma said.

“I think they held the ball longer and had more dangerous opportunities, we were just fortunate to finish the ones we got. There was a long time when I was really nervous. We came in feeling that we were the stronger

team, but they never stop working. We might have had a little bit more skill, but they made up for it with the work they put in.” The Orioles will finish their CAAC Gold season this week, when they host

pass, but pulled one back before the half on a 1-yard sneak by Bartolacci that made the score 27-14 at the break. The Orioles could muster little in the way of offense in the second half, with Bartolacci and Parrish both leaving the game in the third quarter, but Ostipow said that the injuries were no excuse. “We didn’t play particularly well,” he said. “They (Waverly) actually played pretty well, and we had a lot of mistakes. We turned the ball over early, and we never really recovered.” Waverly scored twice more, on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and a 20-yard field goal in the fourth, before backup quarterback Blane Heisler ran in a 38-yard touchdown to make the final score 36-21. Charlotte will look to get back on the winning track this week when they travel to league rival Eaton Rapids on Friday, Sept. 30.

September 25, 2011

DELTA TWP. -- Charlotte fell to 1-3 overall, and 0-1 in CAAC Gold play after a disappointing 36-21 loss at new league foe Waverly on Sept. 16. While it was the Sept. the 16th, it felt more like Friday the 13th for the Orioles, for whom everything that could go wrong seemingly did. Charlotte head coach Eddie Ostipow said that the game against the Warriors, who have not had a winning season since 2003, was one that he wishes he could have back. “It was certainly an opportunity that I felt got away from us,” Ostipow said. “We didn’t get a break, but I’m a big believer that you make your own breaks, and we didn’t do that.” Charlotte’s two main offensive weapons, quarterback

Ryan Bartolacci and receiver Aubrey Parrish, left the game injured in the third quarter. Bartolacci’s injury is the more serious of the two, a concussion that will keep him out of at least one game, while Parrish suffered leg cramps, which will not. Before they went out, Bartolacci completed 11 of his 20 passes for 100 yards in the contest, while Parrish caught four of those passes for 57 yards. The Orioles fell behind in the first quarter on a 78-yard TD pass, but Anthony Charameda tied the game with a 3-yard run on Charlotte’s next possession. Waverly again took the lead with a 7-yard pass, and then stretched the lead by picking up a Charlotte fumble and returning it 13 yards for a touchdown, putting the Orioles behind 21-7 going into the second quarter. Charlotte fell behind 27-7 on a 25-yard Waverly TD

When you think heart, think Sparrow. Eldon did.

“The last time I saw my granddaughter she asked me, ‘Da-da, can I see where you had your heart surgery? I showed her, and she wanted to know if it hurt. I said, ‘No,’” explained Eldon Watson. Not surprising since Sparrow is now home to the region’s leading heart team: expert doctors and nurses using the most innovative technology to provide life-saving care.
