Additional revenue makes new DPS budget less dire Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
DeWITT — The school board last week adopted a 2011-12 budget that cuts some teaching and support- staff positions. But the budget picture is looking a little less dire than it did just a month ago. Some last-minute changes in school funding at the state level added about $450,000 in revenues and allowed DeWitt Public Schools to keep a counseling position and five secretarial positions that were slated to be cut, school officials said. Schools across the state are facing tough budget decisions after the Legislature approved a budget that cuts per-pupil spending by another $300 per student. But districts can get up to $100 per student back in a one-time payment to cover rising retirement costs and another $100 per student if they meet certain financial management criteria. DPS will get about $265,000 from the retirement stipend, or about $88 per student, school officials said. The district also will benefit from a change in the formula

used to calculate the student count, they said. “We do expect an increase in the student population,” Board President Mark Kellogg said. “So that helps our budget.” Finance Director Rob Spagnuolo said he expects DeWitt will quality for the $100-per-student “best practices” money. But the money isn’t figured into the new budget, he said. The Board of Education approved the new $23-million operating budget on June 13. The district eliminated about 11 teaching positions, although the number of layoffs will be lower because of attrition, officials said. The district also cut an assistant principal position at the junior high school and reduced the number of bus runs. Moreover, the district will offer only half-day kindergarten next year. The district offered several full-day kindergarten sections this year. The budget cuts also have further depleted the district’s fund balance, which now stands at about 7 percent.

Rotary awards scholarships DeWITT — Lansing/DeWitt Sunrise Rotary awarded scholarships to two DeWitt High School graduating seniors. Hannah Acre and Katelynn Reisig each received a $500 award at a recent Rotary meeting. Each student was given an opportunity to address the club members and relay their future educational career goals. Hannah Acre, daughter of Bob and Stephanie Acre of DeWitt, has been both an academic and athletic standout for DeWitt High School. Participating in basketball, volleyball, and soccer, she earned an all-conference first team position in basketball, and honorable mention for all-area competition. She also graduated in the top 2 percent of class. Acre plans to attend Calvin College in the fall, majoring in pre-med, with a focus on exercise science. She enjoys babysitting, playing the guitar, and helping others hone their athletic skills. Katelynn Reisig has maintained a focus on tailoring her high school academic curriculum to accomplish her long-term goal of becoming a certified public accountant. Toward this end, she plans to enter the Cormerstone University accounting program, with an emphasis on forensic accounting. This specialty deals with the legal and investigative aspects of the field. Reisig was a member of the People-to-People Student Ambassador Program, visiting Spain, France, and Italy. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
7 Recall talk needs to end
Today I read a letter to the editor in the Lansing State Journal with the headline “Recalling Sen. Judy Emmons is irresponsible and wasteful.” I was unaware of a recall effort. I am not sure if I would support such an effort but I am very unhappy with Sen. Emmons and want to share that publicly. Legislators were elected to represent us, the people. This is the United States of America. Elected officials represent the people. As the people it is our responsibility to communicate our thoughts and wishes to them. In turn they are expected to listen to the people, consider what we have to say and act in the best interests of those they represent. Sen. Emmons is unapproachable. I phoned her office to discuss two issues in April. The reception on the phone was less than lukewarm. The person was not interested in who I was and made no effort to discuss the issues with me or assure me that my opinion would be relayed to the Senator. Even though I was not asked, I stated my name and contact information. On May 1, I emailed Sen. Emmons with the same concerns and emphasized the fact that I felt that I was being ignored. There was no response to my email. On May 23 I again emailed stating that neither the Senator nor her aides appeared to be concerned about what a constituent had to say because they had ignored my communications. Again, there has been no response. I am one of the people but I can not make Sen. Emmons hear me. Maybe I should consider recall.
Enough talk about recalls, please. These are tough times for tough people and there are tough decisions to be made, but haven’t we had enough of the tough talk? I am 55 years old, the father of three adults, and a Christian man. I am not ashamed of any of the preceding, but I am becoming disturbed over the rhetoric and the vicious attacks against some of our publically elected officials. Did the voters not know the past secret life of the candidates now trying to be recalled? Have Governor Snyder and Senator Emmons done something illegal or immoral? No, they have voted contrary to a certain cancerous element in our society, and for that reason only they are under attack.
HONEST AND HARD WORKING JUST LIKE YOU! “OVER 20 YRS EXPERIENCE”
Sarah J. Boron Laingsburg
To me, it’s like a terminally ill patient asking a doctor to restore him back to health, but telling him it can’t hurt, be costly, or affect his present lifestyle. Hey, we are past that stage. We voted these candidates in because we trusted them to start the treatments that would recover our economic losses. (That’s why our governor is a businessman and not a lifelong politician). It is going to hurt for awhile but the prognosis is good. Let the good “doctors” do their job. Let’s take our medicine and get back on the road to good health in Michigan. May God bless us.

New restaurant opens at familiar location Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
DeWITT — A longtime downtown restaurant has a new proprietor and a new name. But if Mary Mullins has her way, Mary’s Homestyle Restaurant will feel a lot like it’s original incarnation as Sam’s Kitchen. “This was conceived as a community restaurant,” said Mullins, a Bath Township resident who took over the business on S. Bridge Street on May 10. “I consider myself a caretaker for a community restaurant. It’s not my restaurant; it belongs to the community.” The restaurant opened as Sam’s Kitchen in 1982 in a building just north of its

current location. In 2000, the Terranova family moved it to its present home in a building that previously housed a grocery store. Different owners operated the restaurant as the Back in the Day Cafe for less than a year before Mullins took over. A chance meeting with Tom Terranova’s wife at a fundraising event last year led to the opportunity, Mullins said. Mullins, who has been working in the food business since she was 14 years old, opened Mary’s Homestyle Cafe in the Mega Mall on U.S. 27 at the south end of the township in 2007. In DeWitt, she wants to cater to the older clientele who frequented Sam’s Kitchen. She’s brought back

some of the old wait staff and hung a Sam’s Kitchen sign outside the building. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the week. On Fridays, it reopens from 5 to 8 p.m. The restuarant offers a cereal bar on Saturday mornings, a full breakfast buffet from 8 a.m to noon on Sunday and a dinner buffet from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. At other times, the restaurant is available for banquets and special events. “The response from the community has been just incredible,” said Scott Strall, who manages the restaurant. “We want to go back toward the Sam’s Kitchen menu, the same kind of atmosphere they Manager Scott Strall and owner Mary Mullins have opened Mary’s Homestyle Restaurant had in here. And people are in downtown DeWitt. The restaurant is at the former location of Sam’s Kitchen. KEN just really happy with it.” PALMER/LCN

Fleas enjoy hot, humid weather The recent hot weather was ideal for flea reproduction. Fleas thrive on temperatures above 80 degrees and humidity over 80 percent. They go from egg to egg-laying adult in 15 days! If the rest of the summer and fall follow suit, get ready for a bumper crop of fleas! Are you saying: “My cat never ventures out.” Just because you have an indoor-only pet does not mean you won’t have a flea problem. One of the worst flea infestations I’ve ever treated involved indooronly cats! What must newly hatched fleas do once they emerge from their cocoon? Have a blood meal of course. Did I mention this meal MUST occur within 48 hours or they die? As a result of this mandatory feeding schedule, fleas have developed a checklist for hatching: temperatures above 70 degrees, humidity above 70 percent, vibration, and carbon dioxide. Warm temperatures and high humidity are typical insect things. Unique to the flea are vibration and carbon dioxide. They indicate a mammal is nearby to supply their blood meal. When dealing with fleas, I recommend pet owners be proactive. We know that newly hatched fleas will be coming to your pet for a blood meal. Let’s equip pets with something that will kill the flea before it bites. Another option is to use a preventive causing all of the eggs the fleas produce to be infertile. Your veterinarian and their health care team are best suited to help you select products that are safe and effective while meeting the health care needs of your pet. They will guide you through the myriad of products available and help you choose one that is best suited to
The DeWitt Soccer Club, is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1990. Its purpose is to promote, encourage, and improve the standard of soccer at all levels in the community.
PET HEALTH Dr. Stephen Thimmig meet their specific needs. For example, why have your pet on a “birth control pill” for fleas if they are allergic to fleabites? It makes more sense to me to use a product that kills the flea before it bites. Simply stated, “Dead fleas don’t bite.” Many of the topical products can be washed off if you use a detergent shampoo. Choosing the proper product to bath your pet, so that the flea control you just applied is not removed, is a very good idea! Some pets show no distress with fleas crawling all over them. Others will tear their hair out and develop severe skin infections with but a single bite in a week. These pets need a little help to control their itching while the flea population is annihilated. Your veterinarian is best suited to help your pet get through this difficult time. Fun flea facts: Female fleas have 16 ovaries! After feeding, fleas mate and make 20 to 50 eggs a day with a maximum of 2,000 in their lifetime! You do not need to make your home a “toxic war zone” with sprays and bombs. Using a flea collar that treats the front half of a pet is of little value. Clearly a safe, effective product applied monthly is your best option. For more information about this and other pet health concerns, contact an expert, your veterinarian.

man was carted off to jail after a family fight that began with a disagreement over a broken-down truck. Township police were called to the Oak Island Mobile Home Park on Park Lake Road about 2:30 a.m. June 9 and spoke with two brothers who had been fighting, police report said. Witnesses said the suspect, who had consumed nearly a fifth of vodka, became combative with his 41-year-old brother and their sister. The two brothers rolled on the floor and exchanged punches. Both suffered cuts and bruises but declined medical attention. The younger brother was taken to the Clinton County Jail on a charge of domes-

Bike thief captured
An off-duty state police trooper caught and detained a 17-year-old township man who had stolen a bicycle owned by a local boy. The trooper, 46, of Bath Township, was meeting with his Boy Scouts troop in the park along Main Street on June 12 when he learned that one of his Scouts had his bike stolen, police reports said. The trooper jumped into his personal car and spotted the bike thief at a pizza place on Clark Road. The suspect resisted, and the trooper wrestled him to the ground and held him until township police arrived, the reports said. The suspect was taken the county jail on a larceny charge.

Bath’s softball run ends in quarterfinals
bmcleod@lsj.com
EAST LANSING — Bath’s bid for an appearance in the state softball semifinals came up short, losing 7-5 to Centreville in the Division 3 quarterfinal at Michigan State University’s Secchia Stadium June 14. “We hit the ball and they hit the ball, and we both booted a few, it wasn’t our best game, but we kept hustling and kept ourselves in the game,” Bath coach Marc Kibby said. “This falls into the category as ‘just one of those days.’” The Bees fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third inning. Centreville’s pitcher Jacy
Bath senior third baseman McKaylah Adams said about the game. “I have a lot of faith in my team, but we just didn’t get the right cards. It happens.” But the Bees refused to throw in the towel, tying the game at 5-5 when Tracey Hayes beat a throw to the plate for a force out at home on a hit by Amie Pumfrey. Hagelgans delivered a big blast in the first inning, easily clearing the fence in left centerfield. Two more Bulldog runs scored on a Bath infield error in the second inning. The Bees exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning, all coming with two outs. Ashley Wahr started the rally when she was hit by a pitch. After a pair of strikeouts, McKaylah Adams had a blast down the third base line. Amanda Chaffee drove in two runs with a fly ball down the first base line, just out of the reach of the Bulldog first baseman. Sam Hayes was safe on a throwing error to first base and Bath senior pitcher Taylor Toune hit a sharp line drive that was mishandled by the Bulldog shortstop, allowing two more runs to score. Bath’s 4-3 lead was short lived with the Bulldogs scoring twice on a pair of Bee errors in the top of the fourth. “I felt pretty confident,”

DeWITT — Every team has its leader; some are vocal and some are more reserved. The significance of both, each having its own leadership qualities, cannot be diminished. Mike Ashley (a 1970 graduate of DeWitt) was a quiet leader, and yet he had a big impact on the many teams he was a part of. As a five-sport athlete, he earned 13 varsity letters. He returned to his alma mater to serve as a volunteer assistant baseball coach contributing to numerous titles,
including a state championship in 1993. Lacking the attention of other higher-profile positions, Ashley went about his business as a quiet leader and led by example. In football, the sport in which he most excelled, Ashley’s impact as a linebacker never lacked the attention of the opposing coaching staff. He was a four-year starter who earned All-Central Michigan Athletic Conference (CMAC) Honorable Mention as a freshman and First

Head football coach Gary Roberts, who took over the football program in 1967, said of Ashley at the conclusion of his senior season, “Mike Ashley is a football player, but more than that…he is a natural leader in his quiet way, a good student and an excellent athlete. I am proud to say that Mike was a part of my team. He makes coaching enjoyable.” Ashley made other coaches proud by participating in their sports. He

leader on a defense that had posted six shutouts, four of which came in the first four games of the season, and had given up just over six points per game. The CMAC championship was decided before a crowd of 4,000 when the Panthers (ranked 18th in Class C) faced league foe Potterville (ranked #3 in Class D), resulting in a 40-34 DeWitt victory. Playing much bigger than his size - standing just 5’10” and weighing a mere 170 pounds - he posted two 20-tackle games versus Laingsburg and Morrice and finished with eight interceptions in those nine games. He finished his senior year averaging 16 tackles per game, which accounted for 30 percent of the team’s total. His outstanding season earned him Class C All-State by the Associated Press (AP) Sports Writers Association, only the second DeWitt football player to receive the honor at that time. He also garnered Class C Detroit News All-State (the only one in Class C in mid-Michigan in 1969) and Second Team All-State by the United

from a 5-9 record his junior season (against much larger Class A and B schools) to a record of 6-3-1 during his senior season. As a senior, wrestling at 145 pounds, Ashley won the DeWitt Invitational and the Clinton County meet, receiving MVP honors for the Clinton County meet. As a three-year starter on the baseball diamond, Ashley earned three more varsity letters. As a sophomore, he received the Most Improved Player award, and during his junior and senior seasons he was part of two CMAC championship teams, earning Second
Team All-League as a senior and receiving the team’s Senior Award. Ashley rejoined the baseball team in 1992 as a member of Frank Deak’s coaching staff. Ashley, who had played under Deak during his sophomore and junior seasons, served as a volunteer assistant working primarily with pitchers. Before stepping aside in 2001, Ashley helped guide the baseball program to eight league championships, five district titles, four regional championships, two state runners-up, and the 1993 Class B State Championship. During those 10 years as an assistant coach, Ashley used what was most comfortable and effective; he stayed behind the scenes and used his quiet leader-
ship to build a rapport with the players. His indirect path of influencing others established a personal relationship with his pitchers. After graduating from high school, Ashley went on to Lansing Community College before working at General Motors in their Service and Parts Operation. Ashley retired from GM in 2008 after 37 years of service, with the last 10 years coordinating all training for GM’s Warehousing Division. He now owns Ashley Photography with his wife, Carol. He has lived in DeWitt his entire life, where he has raised three children (Matt, Mike, and Ryan) and is now the proud grandfather of four granddaughters and one grandson.

DeWitt senior Stephanie Twait (right) leaps above a Plainwell defender to head a ball toward the Trojan goal in the Panthers’ 3-2 overtime loss in the semifinal round at Grand Rapids Christian High School. BILL MCLEOD/LCN
GRAND RAPIDS — DeWitt was unable to hold a 2-1 lead over Plainwell in the Division 2 soccer semifinal, falling 3-2 to the Trojans in double overtime at Grand Rapids Christian June 15. After a scoreless battle for the first 26 minutes, Plainwell sophomore Hope Pell booted in the first goal on a free kick that sailed over DeWitt goalkeeper Lauren Earley’s outstretched arms. DeWitt junior Addy Schaar narrowly missed tying the game with about five minutes left in the first half when she slipped her defender and launched a shot that hit the left goal post. DeWitt tied the Trojans early in the second half when Schaar inbounded the ball to Taylor Radel, who passed to Erica Goodenough to beat Plainwell goalkeeper Rachel Kellogg. Less than a minute later, Goodenough would score her second goal of the game, heading in a pass from senior Stephanie Twait.
“In the second half we came back and fought for every ball, we did our best,” DeWitt coach Jamal Mubarakeh said. “Plainwell did a good job in the first half, pressuring us and beating us to the ball. But the second half was all ours, they (the Panthers) did a great job.” About 10 minutes into the second half Schaar looked to add to the DeWitt score. Breaking away from a Trojan defender, she charged the goal, but Kellogg came out to of goal, diving to grab the ball at Schaar’s feet before she could take the shot. Plainwell junior Lauren Saar booted in the gametying goal at 17:17 in the second half. Despite opportunities by both teams, neither could score, forcing overtime. Plainwell scored seven minutes into the first 10-minute overtime when Pell booted in her second goal of the game from 22 yards out. Kellogg stopped a Goodenough shot on goal about a minute later. The Panthers had two shots that narrowly missed
in the final minutes of the second overtime. The first was a header by Schaar that went wide left and Natalie Knauf’s shot barely went over the crossbar. “It’s tough, we came this far and it’s the second year in a row on this field and again we lose in overtime,” Mubarakeh said. Last year the Panthers lost 1-0 to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern in overtime of the semifinal “I don’t like overtime… Get it done in regulation,” Mubarakeh said. “The game was very competitive like I knew it would be,” Plainwell coach Chad Wiseman said. “I don’t know who we are going to play (in the final) but a team like DeWitt is going to get you ready for anybody.” It will be the first time Plainwell (22-0-1) has been to the state finals in Wiseman’s eight years as coach. “We kept pushing and pushing, Plainwell is a great team and I wish them the best,” Mubarakeh said. “It’s a tough time when you come this far, I’m proud of the girls, they played very hard, We’ll come back next year,
we still have lots of guns (returning).” DeWitt advanced to the semifinals with a 5-1 win over Spring Lake in the regional final at Cedar Springs June 10. Goodenough scored the first goal with an assist from Callen O’Keefe. Goodenough added two more goals, the second with an assist from Katy Stephan and her third goal with an assist from Schaar. Schaar scored the next two goals, both with assists from Goodenough. DeWitt ends the season with an 18-7 record.

Centreville scored two in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Bath looked to have a chance to send the game into extra innings with runners in scoring positions and two outs, but a soft fly ball to first base ended the Bee threat. “This (team) becomes more like a family. These kids worked hard and they are more like my daughters,” Kibby said about the
tearful scene in the dugout. “To see them accomplish what they have is like seeing your own daughter not getting to the end of it all. Yeah, it hurts.” Kibby ends the season with 33 wins, the most of any team Kibby has had in his 16 years as head coach. “I told them to keep their heads up, they have nothing to be ashamed of,” Kibby said. “They have accomplished a lot.
