Police agencies concerned about rise in vandalism Residents asked to call 911 if suspicious activity is observed Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
Robert and Carolyn Bower, of Giving Tree Farm, received an award called Benefitting the Community. The Bowers, whose son, Jonathan, was born with Downs Syndrome, started a business that began as a community garden for people with disabilities and evolved into a 10-acre farm that produces certified organic food. The farm also operates a group home in Lansing and has a one-acre community garden where disabled people go to manage plots two days a week. The food is donated to food kitchens and food banks. Meanwhile, Ten Hens Farm in Bath Township received the Food System
DeWITT — Concerned about a recent increase in vandalism, city police are urging parents to keep better tabs on what their teenagers are doing in the dark of night. “I fully appreciate the fact that kids spend the night with somebody else and sneak out,” DeWitt Police Chief Larry Jerue said. “That’s been happening since the dawn of time. But there seems to be a rising trend, and that’s what’s causing us the biggest concern.” In recent weeks, city police have responded to several property damage incidents and made seven arrests for curfew violations, Jerue said. In one recent case, an officer caught five youths who were placing park benches and traffic cones across the road in the downtown area, he said. They also got inside a wrecker parked at the four corners, activating the vehicle’s overhead lights, Jerue said. The five youths were charged with curfew violations, while another two were still at large, he said. Police also have investigated spray-painting incidents in Riverside Park and a case in which someone disabled a bathroom door lock in the park by gumming up the mechanism, he said. Bicycle thefts also have been on the rise, he said. Officers were seeking charges in juvenile court against a 14-year-old who stole a bike from the middle school, rode it around town and dumped it in a field off of Cherry Street, Jerue said. Similar activity has been happening in Bath Township, where police recently arrested three teenagers who spray-painted obscenities and racial slurs on buildings and signs at the Bath Community Schools complex. The men, ages 17 and 18, snuck out of their homes during the early morning hours to commit the vandalism, which caused an estimated $5,000 in damages, township

BATH TWP. — Five local businesses have been honored for their contributions in building a “new economy” and adding to the quality of life in southern Clinton County. The awards were presented to a local developer, a restaurant owner, a national pie champion and two other entrepreneurs at the first annual “Where Development Begins” ceremony June 16 at Hawk Hollow. The awards program is part of the Creating Entrepreneurial Communities initiative now underway in DeWitt, Bath and Watertown townships and the city of DeWitt. Daryl Kesler, of DL Kesler Con-
struction, who has donated time to help with several community projects, received the Contributing to the Community Award. Founded in the mid-1960s, the company has developed subdivisions and projects such as the Northway Shopping Center in DeWitt Township and Hawk Hollow Golf Course. But Kesler also has done free work over the past two decades, donating labor to build the Bath Township Hall and DeWitt Fire Station 1 and helping with the Bath High School soccer field. Mary Mullins, who owns Mary’s Homestyle Catering and Sam’s Kitchen in DeWitt Township, received the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award, which honors someone willing to turn their dream into reality, despite the risks.

BATH TWP. — Police were seeking charges against three local teenagers who admitted spray-painting obscenities and racial slurs on buildings and signs at the Bath High School sports complex. The male suspects - 17, 17 and 18 - caused an estimated $5,000 in damages at the school and at residences on Sleight and Center roads after sneaking out of their homes on the morning of June 17, township police said. A school official called police after noticing the graffiti on the concession stand, the football press box and signs at the softball field and middle school. The concession stand was defaced with drawings and words made with red spray paint. Vulgar racial comments and a swastika were sprayed on the press box. A red circle also was sprayed on the soccer field. Following leads, Bath Township Officer Andrew Wiswasser interviewed the three suspects on June 19, police reports said. They admitted sneaking out of their homes and meeting at a small path that leads to the schools’ cross country trail system. The two 17-year-olds admitted spraying the grafitti at the school and defacing two vehicles at a residence on Sleight and another on Center, the reports said. The 18-year-old carried the paint cans and was present for some of the vandalism, the reports said.
Man charged with trying to kill boyfriend
A 28-year-old township man faces three felony charges after he allegedly tried to throw another man off a third-floor balcony at The Pointe apartments on Coleman Road. Chazaray J. Robinson, who lives in the complex, faces a July 7 preliminary examination in 65th District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Township officers responded to a fight call at the complex, formerly known as Crossing Place, about 6:45 p.m. June 22 and found the victim, 26, in a parking lot, bleeding severely from cuts to his cheek, reports on the incident said. The victim said the suspect tossed him over the railing and struck him over the head with a five-gallon bucket partially filled with latex paint in an effort to knock him to the ground, the reports said. Residents in a second-floor apartment helped the victim get down from the balcony. The two men, who had been dating for several months, began fighting during an argument over their relationship, the reports said. Several witnesses watched the events unfold on the balcony, including one who said she saw Robinson grab the victim in a headlock and flip him over the balcony. The victim climbed back onto the balcony, only to be punched and tossed back over the railing, she said. At one point, Robinson poked at the victim with a bicycle as he dangled from the balcony, the witness said. The paint bucket and several other items were found
on the ground underneath the balcony. Robinson admitted hitting the other man with the bucket but wasn’t sure how the victim ended up on the other side of the balcony railing, the reports said. The victim was treated for cuts to his cheek and nose and various other injuries to his shoulder, arm and forehead, the reports said.
Burglars get inside but leave it all behind
Township police were baffled about why someone who smashed their way into a local business left without stealing anything. An employee at Nature’s View Golf Course on Howe Road discovered the break-in about 8 a.m. June 25, police reports said. Someone struck the dead bolt on an east-side door of the business with an object heavy enough to bend it away from the sill plate, the reports said. Two televisions lying on a pool table were untouched, as were coins on a desk in the office. And nothing appeared to be missing, police said. Police had no suspects last week.

Obviously, this isn’t going to do either of you any good if you “jump” every time you hear a “BANG.” Keeping dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in an interior room or in the basement may help. Any room without windows is ideal. Leaving the light off is not frightening to your pet as most see quite well in the dark. The sound is further muffled if the room

However for the sedative to be effective, it must be given well in advance of the activity. Tips to help your pet handle the Independence Day fireworks As a rule, I find fireworks terrify many cats and a goodly number of dogs! They do not share the enthusiasm of those who relish this, the noisiest of holidays. With all of the celebratory activities often occurring in a pet’s own backyard, they have no obvious place to seek serenity. The question I hear year after year is: “What can I do to comfort my furry friend?” Here are a few suggestions that may help make the entire day less traumatic for both your pet and yourself. Does “Norman” climb the walls when a firecracker explodes or does “Sweetie” crawl deeper into the closet? Rest assured, in most instances, something can be done
