Bath Twp. seeks Park Lake weed control solution
DeWitt Citizens of the Year

DeWitt Mayor Jim Rundborg recently presented a certificate of public recognition to the DeWitt Millennium Garden Club and is making the organization the 2011 Citizens of the Year. Rundborg noted that the club’s hardwork and endless effort has not only beautified DeWitt, but has also made the DeWitt community a better place to live. COURTESY PHOTO
BATH TWP. — All in all, it seemed like a great deal, township officials said. Instead of paying a contractor to control weeds in Park Lake every summer, the township could buy its own weed harvester, complete with a trailer-conveyor to haul the weeds away. At just $15,000, the machine would pay for itself in a few years. But good deal or not, the idea will have to wait a little while longer, at least.
“I don’t know what the next step for us will be right now,” township Supervisor Tom Schneider said last week, just minutes after learning the seller had unexpectedly sold the machine to someone else. The 1984 Aquamarine H4-100 harvester was listed on eBay for a buy-it-now price of $15,000. The online auction was supposed to run through July 17. “The harvester is in excellent condition and is ready to be put to work,” See WEEDS, Page 6

Festival to feature live entertainment, games and fireworks finale DeWITT TWP.
— The seventh annual Meadows Celebration: A Blast in the Moonlight is sure to please the entire family with a slate of activities, events and entertainment geared toward all age groups. On Friday, July 15,the fun begins at 4 p.m., and continues well into the evening, with live music by The Usual Suspects and a fantastic fireworks finale. Handicap parking and shuttles, as well as shuttle buses to transport attendees to the west end of the park for the evening activities and return them after the finale, help to make the event accessible to all. “We’re looking forward to another fun event with the return of The Great Lakes Timber Show, which was a big hit a few years ago. We’re also bringing back everyone’s favorites – the inflatables, the cardboard canoe race and the watermelon
eating contest,” said Diane Mosier, DeWitt Township Clerk. Granger Meadows Park, which was dedicated to the residents of DeWitt Township by Granger in the summer of 2005, provides an ideal venue for the event. Located south of State Road between Wood Road and BR-127, the park is a valuable recreational resource for the entire region. It can be accessed from Granger Meadows Lane. The Meadows Celebration is held annually on the third Friday of July. It is supported by DeWitt Charter Township and DeWitt Area Recreation Authority and is sponsored by Granger with assistance from many area businesses. If you are interested in helping to sponsor this event, please contact DeWitt Township at (517) 668-0270. For additional information about the Meadows Celebration, call DeWitt Township at (517) 668-0270, visit the Meadows Celebration Blog at meadowscelebration.blogspot.com or find us on Facebook by searching for Meadows Celebration: A Blast in the Moonlight. — From DeWitt Township

U.S. loans make no sense
Am I now to believe the same Senate and House that again and again deeply slashed funding for our schools and universities discovered we can now afford to build a redundant bridge? Is this why they decided to impose taxes on senior pensions so they can afford this boondoggle bridge? I thought voters made it clear that they wanted the bloated and inefficient government downsized and curtailed; not expanded and taking on more debt. Everyday we read about fraud, waste and inefficiencies in government. Wouldn’t our leaders time prove more beneficial and create more jobs for the citizens of Michigan by focusing on streamlining and removing redundant regulations instead of enhancing the size of government and the bureaucracy? We do not need the bridge; we cannot afford it and we need to stop enabling our politicians who believe they can spend our tax money like there is no tomorrow. Please call your state senator and representative and let them know what you think of their next “best” idea Sheri Willis and tell them to get to work on the people’s business; Bath because we all deserve better representation.
Let me get this straight. The federal government is borrowing billions from foreign countries and then we are giving that same money to other countries as foreign aid. So we have taken out a loan, we are paying interest on that loan, and then we are giving that money away to other countries. Additionally many of theses countries don’t like us but are more than willing to take hand outs under the pretense they are an ally. I have to ask: Would you be willing to take out a loan, pay the interest on that loan, and give the money to a neighbor you don’t like or get along with and require nothing in return from that person and still be responsible for the debt? I think not! It’s about time President Obama and the progressive Democrats end this fiscally destructive policy. We demand a balanced federal budget based on cuts, reforming programs, eliminating departments not authorized by the Constitution, defunding Obamacare, and not increasing the debt limit.
Food pantry appreciates support
A special thank you goes out to the Simply Give Program through Meijer and to all of those that donated to the Redeemer United Methodist Church Food Pantry this spring through the program. We received a total of $1,255 in Meijer gift cards to help fill our shelves. Thank you for all the community support received from community food drives and monetary donations as well as the Simply Give Program which enables us to continually reach out to Clinton County. The Redeemer Food Pantry provides a family a week’s worth of food and personal care items based on their family size. Under our grant guidelines clients must live in Clinton County and are allowed to visit our pantry once every 30 days. Referrals can be received through case workers at the Department of Human Services (989-224-5500), through Christian Services (517-394-5411), or clients may also be eligible for a referral if they work with any of the following Clinton County agencies: MSU Extension, RAVE, Capital Area Community Resources, MI Works, Wraparound, Headstart, Eight-cap, and WICK. The Redeemer Food Pantry is open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 5:30 to 7 p.m. Together we all make a difference.

Drivers should be courteous on the road
I’ve lived in Bath Charter Township for almost 30 years. The natural beauty and the variety of wild creatures I encounter daily are great treasures and the major reasons for my long term residency. I do recognize that it is sometimes impossible for drivers to avoid animals who dart across the roads around the township. But I am really saddened by the number of turtles which have been killed on Angle Road at Clise and on Upton Road at Herbison where there are large ponds. Those deaths raise my concern for the safety of my human neighbors as well since many of them walk, jog and bike those areas. I believe that bringing my concerns about these matters to my fellow drivers in Bath will help them make the effort to be more careful and respectful of the nonhumans and the humans who share our magnificent township. I noted with interest the story on the TV program “Today” (June 30) that J.F.K. Airport in New York had closed a runway and sent staff with pickup trucks to help hundreds of migrating turtles reach their nesting Suzie Unruh grounds safely. If one of the biggest, busiest airports can Ministry Assistant & Outreach Coordinator honor the lives of turtles like that, surely Bath area drivRedeemer Church ers can be more successful at avoiding these slow moving animals.

Alaska had its “Bridge To Nowhere” and now the Michigan legislature is considering building a bridge for no good reason . Paying lofty sums to build yet another bridge to connect Canada and Detroit during a time of economic crisis is both staggeringly wasteful and unforgivably irresponsible when we already have two perfectly sound bridges and a tunnel connecting the two countries in the Detroit area.
this peaked my curiosity, so I Googled the article. The truth is, “lake starved” Clinton County has 27 lakes, 27 fishing lakes, five public access lakes and five swimming lakes (including the new 42 acre Motz Park.) No matter how they spin the proposed expenditure, in today’s struggling economy, there is no reason to spend $470,000 to match the $1.88 million from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund. Recently, our voters passed a tax increase on our phones and VOIP for $200,000 annually and promised a $500,000 expenditure to E-911 supporting the increase. If we are so flush, why are we not seeing real property tax relief or more programs supporting struggling home owners? Instead our leaders are looking forward to expanding a park, just because Clinton County does not have a county park! Are my callers right?

The board moved as quickly as it could to authorize a bid on the Illinois weed harvester and simply lost out, Feltman said. It wasn’t the first time it’s happened, he said. The township previously tried to buy a machine from MSU but was outbid, he said. “I guess we’ll keep looking,” he said. Members of a group known as the Friends of Park Lake told board members on July 5 they’d support a special assessment to pay at least part of the
cost of weed control at the lake. A minimal special assessment for weed control expired a few years ago. Board members debated whether township residents who don’t live on the lake should have to share in the cost of buying a harvester, Schneider said. It may be pertinent that the township owns a large percentage of the lake’s frontage and has a public swimming beach, boat launch and fishing pier there.
“It was the kind of discussion that boards and residents should have with each other,” Schneider said. “You just have to put money into infrastructure and assume it will be beneficial to the greater good of the community.” For now, the township will keep looking for an affordable harvester, Schneider and Feltman said. Officials planned to check on a report that a weed harvester might be available at Sleepy Hollow State Park, Feltman said.

said the ad, posted by a seller in southern Illinois. Ray Kotke, a member of the Park Lake Advisory Board, saw the ad and brought it to the Township Board’s attention, Schneider said. The Township Board debated the issue in its July 5 meeting and unanimously agreed to authorize spending up to $15,000. Township representatives, who had talked to the seller just a day earlier, were stunned to hear it was no longer available when they called to make arrangements on July 6. Weed control is a problem at Park Lake, the county’s largest natural lake. Shallower areas become choked with weeds during the summer months, when water levels are low. The township pays a contractor $15,000 to $20,000 a year to do chemical and mechanical weed control. Advisory board members have been watching the ads for a weed machine for some time. But the township can’t afford to spend a great deal of money on one, Superintendent Troy Feltman said. “I look at it from a returnon-investment standpoint,” he said. “At $15,000, it would have paid for itself in about three years.”

Bath Twp. police seek info on June 29 shooting Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
BATH TWP. — Township police were looking for information about a June 29 shooting incident at The Village apartments on Hunsaker Street. No one was hurt in the incident, which happened about 8:18 p.m. at the complex’s basketball court, police reports said. Police from Bath and DeWitt townships and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department responded after a caller reported hearing two gunshots coming from the area of the basketball court. A witness told police that about 10 people were playing basketball when two
subjects walked in and began arguing with players on the court, a report on the incident said. The dispute became heated, and one of the men pointed a handgun into the air and fired two rounds, the witness said. As of last week, no one had been arrested in the incident, although one man was arrested on an outstanding warrant from East Lansing, the reports said. Officers recovered a spent shell casing from the basketball court. They also found a hole in the roof above the basketball court. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Bath Township police at (517) 641-6271.
Three drivers arrested Township police made three drunken driving arrests on July 2. A 37-year-old Royal Oak man was taken to the Clinton County Jail after an officer watched his car drift onto the shoulder or across the yellow center line several times on Howe and Upton roads on the afternoon of July 2, a report on the incident said. About 3 a.m. July 2, a 22-year-old woman was arrested for OUI after being stopped for speeding on Clark Road, The third arrest occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on Clark Road, near Chandler Road. The driver, a 39-year-old Grand Ledge man, was stopped after an officer
saw his vehicle cross the center line twice, reports said.
Burglary reported
Police were investigating a July 4 break-in at the The Club apartments on Coleman Road. A 21-year-old Farmington Hills woman said she returned to her apartment after a long weekend to find a television, a laptop computer and various other items missing, police reports said. Someone apparently pried open the patio door to get into the apartment, the reports said.

DeWITT — The DeWitt Millennium Garden Club will feature the All Kids Playground at Riverside Park during the Midsummer Blooms Garden Walk on Sunday, July 10, from noon to 5 p.m. The playground, dedicated in 2009, was envisioned by Beth Frayer, who recognized the need for a park where children with and without disabilities could play together side-by-side. Funding for the playground came from the Kellie Sebrell Memorial
Trail Run, the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association/Kellogg Foundation, Meijer, Inc., the City of DeWitt, and the Dart Foundation. Children who explore the playground will enjoy a sensory butterfly garden, handicap accessible play equipment and a recent addition of musical instruments. Elizabeth Briggs, artist and potter, will be at the All Kids Playground demonstrating her pottery skills on the stage during the Garden Walk and
Art in the Park. Children who visit with their parents will be invited to create, at no cost, a small flower pot in which to plant a flower to take home. Briggs has worked with children at the Woldumar Nature Center for four years and is excited to participate in this event. She is also an instructor at Clayworks in Grand Ledge. A visit to the All Kids Playground or to the Art in the Park at Riverside Park is free.

Some pet intestinal parasites are transmittable to humans. During the mosquito season, both dogs and cats (unlike humans) need heartworm preventive medication. Fleas prefer to get their “blood meal” from pets. However, if pet blood is unavailable, they will feast on YOU! Safe yet effective monthly flea preventives should be used to keep these blood sucking vermin out of your domicile. At about 6 months of age most pets go through puberty. They should be spayed or neutered prior to this to avoid obnoxious behaviors, undesirable “discharges”, cancer, and unwanted offspring.

to the present. Stay tuned, as I am certain there will be MANY updates to her website as the two of them progress through the years. A very important lesson Keegan will learn is how to become a loving, responsible guardian of Murdock. Children benefit significantly from sharing life experiences while growing up with appropriate pets. Accepting responsibility for another living thing is a powerful lesson that is best taught subliminally. Dr. Stephen R. Murdock, long before Keegan, will start more formal training. To reinforce what is taught in the classroom, both will have homework. cial needs of the very young and to help them grow at an optimal rate. Regular bathing for babies and puppies is a good idea. Appropriate shampoos wash away excess oils, daily grime, and keeps these little ones smelling sweet. Pet shampoos are quite different from those used on infants. A particular product I recommend for furry friends, even when used daily, will not dry out their coat. It whitens, brightens and doesn’t remove topically applied flea preventives. Pets (as do people in third world countries) need to have their stool regularly examined for intestinal parasites and worm eggs.

What more joy might my granddaughter have then exploring her world with a new puppy? Keegan Elizabeth, now 14 months of age, is the proud owner of Murdock, a beautiful brown and white Bearded Collie puppy! At 10 weeks of age he sits, “kind of” stays and comes when he feels like it. The similarities between puppies and babies are incredible. Murdock, as does Keegan, shows his appreciation for life by giving “kisses” to all who come near and he has a lightning fast tongue! Both are quick learners. I firmly believe that the use of positive reinforcement is very ben-

DeWitt Biggby store to mark 10th anniversary
DeWITT — Put your party hat on DeWitt, Biggby Coffee wants to celebrate with you! On Saturday, July 16, join Biggby Coffee DeWitt at 13181 Schavey Road for a celebration commemorating 10 years of business. Since opening in 2001, store owner Deb Kirchen, said the success of her store can be pin pointed to one very important factor: the community. “There is such a sense of support from DeWitt and the surrounding communities that we are so grateful for,” Kirchen said. “We have so many friends who have supported us over the last decade and now we want to give back to our customers and just have a little fun!” Recently voted “Best Coffee House” by readers of the DeWitt-Bath Review, the store was just the sixth Biggby Coffee ever to open franchise wide. “There is a sense of pride for the ‘community’ coffee shop concept and that is what our DeWitt location has developed,”

Our customers and staff have really become like a family and I love that!” Bob Fish, CEO and co-founder of Biggby Coffee has worked with Kirchen for 12 years. “Deb, her family and the rest of her crew in DeWitt are a major part of Biggby Coffee and have done a fantastic job throughout the years,” Fish said. “I am so excited to come and congratulate her in person on her exact anniversary, not only for the company but as a friend. The celebration is well deserved I can’t wait to see the success the next 10 years will bring.” The celebration will begin at 7 a.m. and continue throughout the day until 7 p.m. Fish, aka “Biggby Bob” will stop by to mingle with guests and join in the celebra- The Biggby Coffee store in DeWitt will celebrate its 10-year anniversary on July 16. Volunteers can commit as many or as few hours as their schedule allows.

Russell scored his two goals in a span of 1:25, first tucking a perfect through ball by Mason’s Connor Kogge inside the far post to the right of Grand Ledge keeper Joe Irish with 30:16 left on the clock. Everett boys coach Steve Horn, who co-chaired the All-Star event with Williamston boys coach Brent Sorg, said that he hopes that it catches on as an annual fixture of the local soccer calendar. “We have a lot of kids in the area who go on to play college soccer,” Horn said. “We hope that this can grow, hopefully taking it over to Michigan State, with more fans and the atmosphere growing. This is definitely something I’m planning on doing every year.”

Russell later returned the favor to Sherman, sending a cross from the left wing into the box. Sherman took one touch to control and one more to beat a helpless Irish with 4:22 on the clock to make the final score 3-3, a fitting result to a very well-played game. Area team qualifies for national championship DeWITT — An area AAU girls basketball team, which includes local players, has earned a spot in the national championships. The Capitol City Express completed the winter season with a record of 20-8 while also competing in regional and state tournaments. Because of that success, the team has qualified for the 2011 AAU fourth grade girls basketball national championship tournament, which will be held Aug. 1-4 in Orlando, Fla. The Capitol City Express team is comprised of players from DeWitt, St. Johns, Mason and Holt. Representing DeWitt are Annie McIntosh, daughter of Pam and Rob; Sydney Mills, daughter of Mary and Paul; Meredith Nakfoor, daughter of Cindy and Dave; and Lily Stephan, daughter of Andrea and Bill. All four girls are students at Scott Elementary School. The coaches are Mary and Paul Mills of DeWitt and they are assisted by Mark Lasceski. Mary Mills coached the Eastern High
School varsity girls from 1996-2000. Paul Mills is the assistant freshman basketball coach at DeWitt High School, while Lasceski is the St. Johns High School girls varsity basketball coach. The squad secured second place in the Spartan Classic in March, missing out on the first place finish by only one point. The team went on to celebrate their first championship win and first place finish in the AAU Friendship States tournament held in Hartland at the end of March. The team qualified for AAU regionals and secured a bid in the state tournament amidst a group of fifth grade Division 2 teams in Brooklyn, Mich. Because of an excellent season, regional action and qualification for States, the team was notified of their qualification to represent the State of Michigan in the 2011 AAU 4th grade girls Basketball National Championships. The coaches, parents and players realize their participation hinges on affordability. The parents are working on extensive fund-
raising to support the team’s mission to make “their dream a reality.” Currently the group is in the process of organizing various fundraising projects including a casino bus trip, proceed collaborations with local restaurants, can drives and recently participated with Michigan International Speedway to earn money preparing giveaways for the upcoming race season. All proceeds will benefit the entire team. For more information about sponsorship opportunities please contact Pam McIntosh at (517) 668-9416 or Michelle Robbins at (989) 620-0020. The group is seeking individual and business sponsors to help support their mission, for those wishing to make a tax deductible contribution, make checks payable to: Capitol City 9 U Fundraiser c/o Pam McIntosh, 11902 Sara Ann Drive, DeWitt, MI 48820. — From the Capitol City Express
