DeWitt students finally make trip to visit Japan Trip scheduled for May, but delayed due to earthquake Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT — A group of eighth-graders from DeWitt Junior High School are getting to see Japan, after all. The eight students and two chaperones took off for Tokyo on Thursday, several months after the trip had been cancelled because of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in the northern part of the island nation. “We are very excited about this opportunity for the kids,” said Carol Hasse, whose son, Aaron, is part of the

Japanese Exchange Program. “They are ecstatic to see their friends from Japan again.” Ten students from Koka City in central Japan spent a week in the DeWitt area in January as part of the longrunning student exchange program, staying with the families of DeWitt students. Ten DeWitt students were scheduled to visit Japan in May, but organizers decided to cancel the trip because of the devastation caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Coordinators monitored the situation in Japan and decided to reschedule the trip for July 28 to Aug. 5, Hasse said. The eighth graders are visiting Koka City in Shiga Prefecture, which is far south of the area directly affected by the disasters.

Only seven of the original 10 students are making the trip, Hasse said. The eighth student visiting Japan was an alternate in the exchange program, she said. The DeWitt students were scheduled to arrive in Koka on July 29. They were expected to spend time with their host families over the weekend and attend school with their Japanese friends during the week. Their itinerary also includes visits to a Ninja estate, Hikone castle and Biwako museum, as well as a trip to a shopping mall. During their visit, the students also will present money they collected for Japan’s disaster relief efforts, Hasse said. The students raised the money through a taco dinner originally planned to raise money for their trip. The students are set to leave Tokyo on Aug. 5 for the flight back to Detroit.

A canine team from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department searched the area and eventually found one of the men hiding in a brushy area. The man surrendered after the dog bit his leg, the reports said. The other two men were arrested later. The driver, 21, was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding and obstructing police. A 20-year-old suspect is charged with resisting arrest, while a 19-year-old man faces charges of being a minor in possession of alcohol and resisting arrest.

Passenger arrested on two open warrants

Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT TWP. — An elderly driver who was trying to cross Business U.S. 127 during rush hour caused a chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles, included a parked travel trailer. No one was hurt in the July 22 crash, which happened about 4:50 p.m. Township police said the woman, 76, of DeWitt, was eastbound on Northway Drive and stopped at the stop sign at the Business U.S. 127 intersection before trying to pull across the highway. Her vehicle struck a northbound vehicle, causing it to run off the road and collide with a new travel trailer at Annie Rae’s RV Center. Police said the woman was cited for driving on an expired license and failing to yield the right-of-way.

Woman ticketed for causing crash Earlier on July 22, a 46-year-old Lansing woman was cited for careless driving after running a red light at State Road and Business U.S. 127. The woman, who was driving east on State, told police she was late for work and tried to beat the light at Business U.S. 127. Her car hit a northbound vehicle occupied by four people, ranging in age from 2 to 51. No injuries were reported.

A township officer stopped a driver for a smoky exhaust and discovered that a passenger in the vehicle had open warrants. The stop occurred about 9:25 p.m. on Business U.S. 127, near Coleman Road, police said. The 37-year-old passenger was turned over to the Ingham County Sheriff’s office on two outstanding arrest warrants.

Medication collection event to take place Aug. 27 Collection held in conjunction with Clean Community event ST. JOHNS — Clinton County announces a series of dates for residents to dispose of their expired or unwanted medications. Collection programs will be held throughout the year with the help of local partners and law enforcement agencies. The services were initiated in the last two years, and demand for the programs has grown. Medication collection events allow residents to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction. These drugs are a potential source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

“These services are important to increase awareness, and prevention of prescription drug abuse,” said Sheriff Wayne Kangas. “Residents are encouraged to dispose of medications responsibly by participating in one of the events to be held in the coming months.” Medications should never be disposed of by flushing or pouring items down the drain. Most substances are not able to be filtered by water treatment plants. As a result they can end up in surface waters and negatively impact local ecosystems. Landfill disposal has similar challenges. The preferred disposal alternative is through special incineration technologies, which destroy chemical compounds while preventing pollution to the environment. The current schedule for medication collection programs is as follows:

• Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clean Community Event in DeWitt Township, the location is provided when an appointment is made. • Oct. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Clinton County Community Health Fair, at Clinton County RESA, 1013 S US Highway. • Dec. 2 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Sparrow Clinton Hospital Pharmacy, 901 South Oakland Street, in St. Johns. For more information about participating in a medication collection event, or to learn about proper disposal of medications, contact the Clinton County Department of Waste Management at (989) 224-5186, by e-mail at conserve@clinton-county.org, or on their website at www.clinton-county.org. — From the Clinton County Department of Waste Management

Bath Days Continued from Page 1

“Our biggest goal this year was to add something for the teens to be able to do,” said Vicki Streeter, president of the committee that plans the festival. “In the past, we’ve had the inflatables for the younger children. But by bringing in the rides, we hope to attract the interest of teenagers.” Vertical Edge Entertainment will provide six attractions, including a climbing wall, a mechanical bull and rides called GyroXTREME, Dixie Twister and Turbo Tubs. The rides will open at 3 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. Also new this year is the American Legion Post 412 Beer Tent, which opens at 4 p.m. Friday and noon on Saturday. Two historical-themed events offered last year won’t be back this time. The Pleasant Hill Cemetery Tour featured costumed re-enactors telling the stories of some of Bath’s noteworthy characters. A theatrical presentation of the 1927 Bath school massacre also won’t be back.

The festival begins at 2 p.m. Friday with a ceremony in the park. A bubble gum-blowing contest is set for 2:30 p.m., and a marshmallow building competition is set for 4:30 p.m. A sloppy joe dinner, sponsored by Bath United Methodist Church, runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday. Family Night activities start at 5:30 p.m. in the park, with the Jack Clarkston Band taking the main stage at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Bath Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. The Bath Days Festival Parade begins at 10 a.m. leaving from the high school, and the car show also begins at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9 a.m. A sack race is set for 2 p.m. in the children’s booth in the park, along with senior line dancing at 2:30 p.m. The Bicycle Fun Ride begins at 5:30 p.m., with registration at 4:30 p.m. “It’s not a competitive thing,” said Jennifer Wilson, secretary for the Bath Days committee. “Families can come out and ride their bikes. There are three different routes they can follow.” Folk musicians Matt and Deb Carl take the stage at 8 p.m. Satur-

day, followed by Jake Goodwin at 9 p.m. The fireworks show by Wolverine Fireworks Display Inc. kicks off at 10 p.m. at the high school, where the athletic boosters will have a concession stand. Wilson’s advice: The high school grounds are the best place to see the fireworks. As for the Bath Tub Races, which begin at noon on Saturday, the format has changed a bit this year, Wright said. All entries will race in a single division, with a double-elimination format. The separate weight divisions have been eliminated because of time considerations, he said. The rules are pretty simple, Wright said. Vehicles must be made of something used to hold water, have operable brakes and steering and a handle on the rear so two people can push it. Every year, the race features a showdown between the township’s police and fire departments. The police department won last year’s runoff, meaning the fire department will have to wash police vehicles during this year’s festival.

because of a hypersensitivity to the flea’s saliva, just one bite a week can make them scratch until they’re bald! When I can’t find a flea, how do I prove to doubting guardians that fleas are the problem? I look at the pet’s hairless haunches and scabby rump. The proof comes when I find “flea dirt”. One way is to give your pet a preventive that causes flea

I recommend for bathing pets is Pearlybrite shampoo. It is not a soap or detergent, but its whitening, brightening agent cleans all pets effectively and makes white pets glow. Even daily use will not remove topical flea-control products. If you are getting a late start, your pet may need some relief from the itching while you get the fleas under control. Consult your veterinarian for the best way to minimize the scratching before they develop a skin infection! For more information about this and other pet health concerns, contact an expert, your veterinarian.

eggs not to hatch - a kind of “birth control” for fleas. For pets with a flea allergy, this is not the best option! One bite a week for some dogs and cats is sufficient to cause them to go bald. If you use this product, every pet in the house must be on some form of flea control or the fleas will find an unprotected victim and start the whole cycle over again - have a blood meal, mate and produce fertile eggs. The second option is to apply a topical insecticide that kills fleas before they bite. This is clearly preferred for pets allergic to fleabites. Please be aware that when you bathe them with a detergent shampoo, these flea products will be washed off. A non-detergent shampoo will remove the grime from your pet yet leave on the topical insecticide. The product

Clinton County Habitat begins ramp program Group receives grant to fund program ST. JOHNS — Most people know that Habitat for Humanity builds decent, affordable and safe homes for low-income families who are hard-working, but who would not be able to afford a conventional mortgage. In an attempt to reach out to serve more families in Clinton County throughout the year, Habitat has begun a wheelchair ramp program. The program is designed to serve lowincome families, physically impaired persons or elderly persons who own their homes. Habitat will provide the ramp design and the labor, and the family served will only have to pay for the material. Knowing that the need may far outweigh the ability to pay, short term loans will be available through Habitat for families who may need it. The program also helps to serve those who want to do volunteer construction work not only during the busy summer season, but year round.

The Capital Region Community Foundation recently awarded $7,590 to help Habitat launch the program. “We are pleased to support the efforts of Habitat for Humanity in Clinton County, a region that has been underserved in the past, and we look forward to their development with great promise,” said Brad Patterson, Vice President of Programs for the foundation. The mission of Capital Region Community Foundation is to serve the charitable needs and enhance the quality of life in Michigan’s Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties. The foundation annually grants approximately $2.5 million from its more than 350 unique funds. In May, 2011, in partnership with the Tuesday Toolmen volunteer group, Habitat constructed its first wheelchair ramp in Eagle. Those interested in learning more about Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County received a grant in the amount of $7,590 from the Wheelchair Ramp Program can call the Capital Region Community Fund to be used for Habitat’s ramp-building program. Brad Patterson of Capital Region Community Foundation is shown presenting a check Sue Carroll at (989) 227-1771. — From Habitat for Humanity for $7,590 to Sue Carroll, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County. of Clinton County
