Bath Days festival a big hit

DeWITT TWP. — Three people wanted in other jurisdictions were arrested in two separate incidents occurring within an hour of each other on Aug. 2. Officers were called to the area of Business U.S. 127 and Weiland Road about 7:45 p.m. for a possible assault in progress and found two people fighting, township police said. They recognized the two subjects - a 43-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman from Lansing - from wanted posters at the police station and turned them over to Lansing police. Both were wanted for questioning in a felony investigation. About 50 minutes later, officers were called back to the same area for a disturbance and questioned two subjects at a motel, police said. A 48-year-old woman was lodged in the Clinton County Jail on an Ingham County warrant for failing to appear in a drunken-driving case, police said.

Two drivers hurt in crash Two people were hospitalized after a rollover crash Aug. 4 on Business U.S. 127 at Webb Road. Township police said a DeWitt woman, 34, stopped for a stop sign on eastbound Webb before pulling across the highway and striking a vehicle driven by a Lansing man, 20, causing his 2012 Equinox to overturn. Both drivers were taken to Sparrow Hospital with undisclosed injuries. The woman was cited failing to yield the right-of-way.

The annual Bath Days festival took place Aug. 5-6 with plenty of activities. The highlight was the annual bath tub races. One heat featured the Bath Schools team against the Bath Police Department team (above.) There was also the traditional race between the Bath Police department and Bath Fire Department. The police department was victorious in the showdown, meaning the firefighters will have to wash the patrol cars during next year’s Bath Days festival. Bath police to hold bike rodeo Aug. 17

The Bath Township police department will sponsor a bike rodeo at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Rockin House day care facility at the corner of Webster and Clark Roads. Officers will teach bicycle and pedestrian safety, and participants should remember to bring their bikes, the police department said. In case of rain, the rodeo will be held on Aug. 18 at the same time.

The man, 26, woman, 22, gave different accounts of the conflict and told police they didn’t want to press charges against the other or make written statements, a report on the incident said. The man told officers they were married; the woman said they were not. The woman was taken to a hospital after aggravating a previous injury. The case was sent to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office for a review possible charges.

Officers from Bath and DeWitt townships responded after security guards heard the sound of breaking glass and saw two or three men running from the area of a vandalized vehicle about 5:30 a.m., police reports said. Officers went to an apartment in the complex and questioned two men, including one wearing clothing matching the description of one of the suspects. The two men, both minors and MSU students, were arrested for possessing alcohol. Prosecutors were reviewing possible property destruction charges against one of them.

A Lansing man was arrested Aug. 3 on a trio of warrants from other jurisdictions. Township police said they made contact with the man because he was acting suspiciously and discovered the outstanding warrants. It was unclear where he was arrested. After six years in Belding, she was ready for the new challenge and to work closer to home. “Although my heart and soul is and always will be in the area of special education, I am truly looking forward to being in a building full of students again-especially the kindergarten age! It’s like having the best of both worlds in one with the combined position,” said Senita. DeWitt’s Superintendent John Deiter worked with Senita in Belding Schools. “I was thrilled when Kathi expressed interest in the position,” said Dr. Deiter. “I was not at all surprised when she came out as the top candidate in the interview process. I think people will find that Kathi is very professional and extremely knowledgeable. She is a strong advocate for special education students and she has high expectations for students and teachers alike.” Senita is pursuing her doctorate from Eastern Michigan University. She currently holds a bachelors degree in special and elementary education from Mount Union College, Ohio along with a masters in special education and central office administration from Grand Valley State University and a specialist degree from Grand Valley State University.

DeWITT — Though students will not report until Sept. 6, Kathleen Senita, DeWitt’s newest administrator, has been braving the heat and preparing for the school year in her new position. Senita, who officially started on July 1, will serve as both the district special education director and principal of Fuerstenau Early Childhood Center for DeWitt Public Schools. Senita has 27 years of experience in public education including 17 years as a special education and general education teacher. She knows firsthand what to expect as a kindergarten teacher having spent her last five years as a teacher in Portland Public Schools as a kindergarten teacher. Asked what she likes most about kindergarten students, Senita said, “Kindergarten students are pretty happy campers and they come so willing to learn every day. They don’t always realize its work or that they are actually learning and they have fun with their school experiences. I also love that they laugh a lot and give

the best and most hugs!” After her experience in the classroom, Senita was ready for a new challenge and moved to Bath Schools where she was the elementary principal and district special education supervisor. “I agreed to take the position in Bath because it felt like a good fit with the size, the people, the community and myself,” said Senita. “Together great things were accomplished. They were truly an amazing staff which felt more like family.” After four years in Bath, Senita was hired by Ionia County Intermediate School District and was placed at Belding Area Schools as their special education director. Senita was living in Ionia when she started at Belding and was pleased to be working closer to home. Since then she has moved to Portland where her youngest child will be starting high school. Senita also has three other children who are successfully moving through the educational system. Of these three, one is a senior at Portland HS, one a junior at University of Michigan, and one to graduate from Grand Valley State University in December. Her husband of 26 years is a successful, self-employed business owner. Senita welcomes the challenge of the split

DeWITT TWP. — Handicapped children, including some in wheelchairs, grabbed shovels at Valley Farms Park on Aug. 8 and held them to the ground. It was purely a ceremonial groundbreaking. But when the new CASE Cares Miracle League Baseball Field is ready to go next year, they could be on the field, doing what ablebodied children already are doing - playing baseball. “It’s critical that all children have the opportunity to grow and develop,” township Supervisor Rick Galardi said during the ceremony. “The people of DeWitt Township welcome this project and all who come to play with open arms.” The new facility - the first of its kind in mid-Mich-

igan - will have a rubberized surface amenable to wheelchairs and walkers. with painted bases and foul lines. A $394,200 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund will cover most of the

In addition to distemper and parvo, must dogs be “kennel cough” immunized? What is the significance of kennel cough? On the night of the groundbreaking ceremony, the Township Board approved a contract with Laux Construction to build the field and new bathroom and concession facilities in the park off Business U.S. 127, south of State Road. Actual construction could begin within the next two weeks, township officials said. Jake Boss Jr., the head baseball coach at Michigan State University and honorary chairman for CASE Cares, said he plans to get his team involved with the Miracle League after the new park opens. “You’re creating memories for these young people,” Boss said. Justin Caine, a local business owner who had a cancerous tumor removed from his brain at age 10 and spent time in a wheelchair, said it’s important for disabled children to be to play ball and interact with other children. “Every child has the right to be able to play, regardless of disabilities,” he said.

A Miracle League field is operating in the Detroit area. A fundraiser for CASE Cares is set for Aug. 21 at the DeWitt Township Community Center and Granger Meadows Park. The Total Health Fitness

Challenge entails a threemile course with a 70-foot hill climb, a farmers walk, a cargo net bear crawl, a log leap, climbing walls and other obstacles. Participants will compete in six age groups, with awards given to the top three finishers in each division. The fee is $37 in advance and $45 on race day. THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This LJ-0100110471

allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. ST. JOHNS — Clinton County Sheriff’s deputies made 348 traffic contacts during the week that began Aug. 1 and ended Aug. 7. Deputies were called to eight traffic crashes and eight car-deer crashes. They stopped 13 drivers were were driving on suspended licenses. Deputies arrested three drivers for opeating while intoxicated. Deputies were called to seven instances of assault and battery /family disputes. They also responded to four breaking and entering cases, two reports of fraud and one sexual assault. Four civil neighbor disputes and three DNR /hunting complaints were handled by deputies. Deputies investigated seven reports of malicious destruction of property and they conducted two medical examiner investigations. Deputies followed up on 14 investigations. Sheriff’s deputies answered 645 calls for assistance during the week. Following are some details of deputy activity during the week.

Monday, Aug. 1 Deputies investigated a commercial breaking and entering on North BR-127 in Bingham Twp. Deputies were called to a reported sssault and battery on West Cutler Road in Eagle Twp. Deputies assisted at a one-vehicle traffic crash on Round Lake Road in Victor Twp. The driver was cited for a license violation. A check-subject was reported on US-127 in Olive Twp. Deputies investigated an harassment complaint on County Farm Road in Bingham Twp. St. Johns Police and a Sheriff’s deputy investigated a report of a man with a gun in Bingham Township. The property owner was found to be shooting raccoons. A deputy stopped a car for speeding in Watertown Twp. and determined the driver was driving without a valid driver’s license. DeWitt Twp. officers requested assistance with a fight call. One of the suspects was arrested for operating while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.

While driving through the Village of Ovid, a deputy discovered a fight in the downtown area. A juvenile was taken into custody on a probation violation.

Sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop in Bath Twp. resulting in the driver being arrested from an outstanding warrant and driving while license suspended.

Following a traffic stop on BR-127 in Bingham Twp., the driver arrested on a license violation. A check-subject was reported on Warm Creek Drive in Watertown Twp. Deputies investigated a commercial burglar alarm on South Krepps Road in Olive Twp. Deputies gave assistance to Florida child protective services in the Village of Maple Rapids. Deputies were called to a commercial breaking and entering on North BR-127 in Bingham Twp. Deputies checked on a commercial burglar alarm on Industrial Parkway in Watertown Twp. Deputies in a family dispute reported on West Price Road in Olive Twp. Deputies reponded to a civil dispute on North Grange Road in Dallas Twp. Deputies investigated a suspicious situation on West Parks Road in Bengal Twp. Deputies were asked to check subjects on Eden Trail in Eagle Twp. Deputies assisted St. Johns Police Department with a possible fight call on State Street. Deputies assisted St. Johns Police with a suicidal subject call on Brush Street. Deputies investigated a domestic assault and battery on West Grand River Ave. in Watertown Twp. The male subject was arrested and lodged at Clinton Coounty Jail for domestic violence. Sheriff’s deputies mediated a family dispute between a teenager and his parents in Bingham Twp. A deputy investigated a car-deer crash in Bingham Twp. DeWitt Twp. officers requested assistance with a domestic situation where several people had been drinking and wanted their roommate to leave. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check in Ovid Twp. When deputies arrived, they found the woman who called, holding a knife and wanting to hurt herself. Deputies spoke to the woman who decided she wanted to be taken to the hospital.

Deputies investigated a death in St Johns. The death was determined to be natural, and no further investigation will be conducted. Deputies stopped a vehicle in Ovid Twp. for an improper plate. The driver was cited for improper plates and arrested on a warrant. Deputies assisted Gratiot County in the Ovid-Elsie area with stopping a vehicle where the occupant was possibly armed. Once the scene was secure Gratiot County handled the incident. Deputies investigated a domestic assault and suicidal subject in Eagle Twp. No arrests were made at the time, however charges will be filed on the suspect. Deputies investigated a malicious destruction of property in Watertown Twp. No suspects were located and one victim had damage to his vehicle. Deputies investigated an unwanted subject in Eagle Twp. The suspect was removed from the residence without incident. Deputies investigated a domestic in Bingham Twp. The suspect was arrested for domestic violence. Deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding in DeWitt Twp. The driver was arrested for drunk driving. ST. JOHNS — The 11th annual Pheasants Forever/ Chuck Gorman Youth Day will be held Sept. 10 at Motz Park in St. Johns. There is no entry fee and all kids age 15 or younger are invited to participate and bring their parents or guardian. This event allows kids to participate in a fun-filled day with various activities with their parents or special person.

The activities this year will include canoeing, fishing, trap shooting, air rifles, building cedar duck boxes and more. Jacob’s Race benefit 5K to take place on Aug. 20 LAINGSBURG — The fifth annual Jacob’s Race 5k run/ walk and kids fun run is being held on Saturday, Aug. 20, at McClintock Park in downtown Laingsburg. The event is being held to benefit the McClintock Park amphitheater and a new Laingsburg Youth & Community Center called “The Connection” on behalf of Jacob Voisinet and his family of Laingsburg/St. Johns. Jacob is a bone marrow recipient (9/2006) for treatment for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life

threatening immune disorder. The kids fun run (.45 mile) begins at 8 a.m. The 5k race starts at 8:30 a.m. and the Tot Trot (200 yard dash) is following the 5k. The entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children under the age of 18 for early registration on or before Aug. 10. After that date, the entry fees increase to $25 for adults and $12 for children. The Kids Fun Run fee is $10. The entry fee includes a T-shirt (guaranteed for early registrants only,) refreshments and awards.

Gold Card sale starts Aug. 16 DeWITT — The DeWitt football program holds its annual Gold Card Blitz on Tuesday, Aug. 16 ,from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams will “blitz” the community selling the Gold Cards. This is the main fund raiser for the football program. “This fund raiser is so important for our program to make up for the significant budget cuts that have hit us due to the economy,” said Rob Zimmerman, head football coach. “It involves the community, gets the kids into the community and keeps the money right here in the community. We have been very blessed with strong community support in the past and

we are asking again for a lot of small donations, they really add up.” A Gold Card can be purchased from a player on the Blitz night for $20 and buyers will receive the card upon purchase. A Gold Card has many reusable savings coupons from area businesses, all on one small card. Residents who are not at home during the Blitz may purchase a Gold Card at the Panther Pride Cart at the Ox Roast or purchase them at the football games.
