DeWITT — After the emerald ash borer has come and gone, Gary Arens steps in, breathing new life into the wood left behind. At Arens’ hand, lifeless trunks become bears, eagles, owls, dogs, fish and other works of art. In neighbor Larry Arbanas’ yard, a three-trunk ash tree became a tribute, of sorts, to Arbanas’ long teaching career. Arens carved an open book into one of the trunks, a rolled-up diploma into another and a stack of books and an apple atop the third. An owl - a symbol of wisdom - is

perched on a branch above the rest of the sculpture. The open book doubles as a bench along the Looking Glass River. “He said, ‘Gary, can you make me something to sit on?,’” Arens recalled. “He didn’t really know what he wanted. But I knew Larry was a retired teacher, and I learned he was a Vietnam veteran. That made me want to help him that much more.” Arens, a retired autoworker who made his first large carving less than 10 years ago, is steadily gaining recognition for his work. Last year, he won a craftsmanship award at a Michigan Wood Carvers Association competition in Midland

with a likeness of his beloved golden retriever, Lucy Lou, who died in 2007. The life-sized dog is holding a merganser decoy head in its mouth. “I had it at a show where a guy wanted to buy it in the worst way,” Arens said of his dog carving. “I told him it will be a family heirloom, so he’d have to marry my daughter to get it. He didn’t want it that bad.” Arens’ largest piece - a 22-foot-tall ash sculpture depicting an elaborate wildlife scene - entertains golfers at Indian Hills Golf Course. At the top, an eagle with eaglets sit on a nest, along with a squirrel holding a golf See WOOD CARVER, Page 4

ball. A skunk, an owl with owlets and two climbing bear cubs complete the sculpture. “I’m living my dream right now, and it’s great,” he said. “I can work at my own rate, although I’m probably at the point where I’ll have to start turning down work.”

Early career Arens, 56, grew up on a farm in Westphalia. He recalled watching his brother, Dan, who is now an accomplished muralist, take a chunk of lye soap from the attic and whittle it into a bear. “It was walking on all fours and had its head turned, with one leg in front of the other,” he said. “It just had a lot of flow to it. That kind of stuck in my mind.” Arens said he started hand-carving small items more than 20 years ago, while he was working at General Motors, making figurines as gifts at family events. He graduated from strictly hand tools to power tools and made his first large piece - a 7-foot bear - in 2002. “One thing kind of led to the next,” he said. “Running a chainsaw is the same principal as a hand tool. It’s just on a bigger scale.” Along the way, Arens said, he’s learned from artists such as Charlie Volk, of Eagle, and James Madsen, of Potterville, both noted chainsaw carvers. Chainsaws and power tools are part of his arsenal, but he’ll use anything at his disposal to get what he’s looking for, he said. When he’s not doing commissioned jobs at other sites, Arens works along the river behind his house. Several large tree sections, including a multi-trunk maple, lie in the yard, awaiting new life. “That’s like a can of Play-doh,” he said, pointing to one of the tree sections. “There’s anything you want in there.” Arens’ sense of humor and whimsy are reflected in his

art. In his front yard is a wooden bear holding a planter of flowers, with its tongue curled over its nose. A bumble bee once sat on the bear’s nose, Arens said, but he removed it to use on another piece. In the back yard, a standing ash trunk has been fashioned into a huge rainbow trout, rising beside a cattail stalk. Another tree is preserved as the gopher from the movie, “Caddyshack, ” holding a real golf club. Near the riverbank, a bear sits on a toilet, as if to answer the age-old rhetorical question involving bears and defecation. A few feet away, a life-sized rooster is a work in progress. Arens chose walnut for the carving so he could use the lighter-colored band of the wood for the bird’s beak and breast.

Giving trees new life With so many dead ash trees available - hundreds line the banks of the Looking Glass near his home on Sandhill Drive - Arens won’t run out of canvas for his art anytime soon. The ash borer, an invasive beetle first discovered in the Detroit area in 2002, has killed tens of millions of ash trees in more than a dozen states and Canada. These days, at least half of his work is done in ash, Arens said. The variety is harder to work with than some others but holds up well, he said. “I would hate to say the ash borer is my friend, but it has brought me a lot work,” he said. “There’s no denying that fact.” Arens’ carvings have brought him extra income. But making money and winning competitions are not his main motivations, he said. For the most part, he just wants to make people smile, he said. “You can take something dead and put life back into it,” he said. “It’s a nice way to relax, and when you’re gone, you have something to give your kids someday. I’m enjoying it, and I’m making some money at it. (But) I’m afraid that by doing too much of it, the novelty will wear off, I’ll lose my edge and it’ll become like a job,” he said.

Grant to cover costs of installing station downtown Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT — City officials are hoping that an electric car recharging station at the center of town will provide a jolt for the downtown area. “I see this as a win-win for everybody,” City Manager Dan Coss said. “We’ve got folks who will benefit from it,

and it’s also an attraction that will draw people from outside of the area to our downtown.” A grant administered by ChargePoint America will pay for the new charging station, scheduled to go in at the southwest corner of Main and Bridge streets by the end of this month. The station will be the first in the area outside of Lansing and the first municipally owned station in mid-Michigan, officials said. Electric car owners will be able to recharge for free at a reserved parking space. ChargePoint America is a $37-million project designed to build charging stations in metropolitan areas. The ini-

tiative received a $15 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. DeWitt’s grant will cover the estimated $8,000 cost of the station. The city will pay for installation, expected to be about $6,500, Coss said. City officials said they want to accommodate greenminded drivers as electric cars like the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf become more available, especially considering the city’s connections to Lansing and General Motors. “It will set us apart from other downtowns,” said Coss, who sought the grant on behalf of the city and the Downtown Development Authority. DeWitt is one of the first cities in mid-Michigan to receive a ChargePoint grant, DDA Director Mike Lee said. “This is part of the DDA’s ongoing work to bring people in to enjoy our downtown and be green while doing it,” Hospital. The other driver was cited for failing to yield. Lee said. DPS school election has new names Seven candidates on ballot for three open seats; two incumbents choose not to run Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT — Seven people, including a former board member and three candidates running as a team, will compete for three open seats on the DeWitt Board of Education in November. Board Vice President Cliff Flood is seeking re-election, but the other two seats will have no incumbent. That’s because Secretary Cammie Cantrell and Trustee Ken Armbrustmacher chose not to run for another term. Craig Kahler, who served more than two years on the board before losing an election bid in 2009, filed nominating petitions with the Clinton County Clerk’s office by the Aug. 16 deadline. So did Thomas Mollitor, Douglas Vettraino and Janet Zielaskowski, who are running as a group. Denise Hamlett and Sarah Hartman, who have had children or stepchildren in the school district, also filed to run. Vettraino, former director of custodial, maintenance and grounds for the school district, said the large field of candidates is a spillover from the 2009 board election, when three new members were seated. That election was largely driven by the board’s decision that year to privatize custodial services. Since then, the board and the administration have become more open, Vettraino said. “It’s starting to change slowly,” he said. “But the citizens in the community are still wanting more from their board. They still don’t believe the board is being totally square with them, totally transparent.”

Zielaskowski said she worked for the state for more than 30 years and has a background in contract and budget matters. After thinking about it for years, she decided that now is her time to run, she said. “I think we need to communicate more with teachers, staff and the public,” she said. “I would like to see more of that.” Mollior, who owns a local business, said he’sconcerned about what’s happened in the district. “I think they are making too many short-run decisions and not looking long-term,” he said. Hartman is chief financial officer for an Okemos company and has long been active in the DeWitt Public Schools, serving on committees and volunteering with the PTA and the band boosters. Hartman said she wants to help make decisions “that make long-term sense for the kids and for the schools.” Hamlett, an attorney, said she moved to DeWitt from Ann Arbor about a year ago and is moving her practice to DeWitt. She was active in school affairs in Ann Arbor, she said. “DeWitt is facing things that all districts face - budget cuts and downsizing,” she said. “It’s really a matter of taking a look and seeing what cuts are most appropriate,” she said. Kahler said he’s worked “in and around” public education for 26 years and has extensive experience with school financing. He’s served on the district’s bond steering committee and strategic planning committee. “I think I bring a nice, balanced perspective when it comes to the board’s function and how the school district operates,” he said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The term “disconnect” is a household word as we watch governments in distress with declining revenue, bulging budgets and poor money management decisions. Commissioner Stacey’s response regarding the budget expenditure of $470,000 to expand Motz Pond Park brings this term close to home. The acquisition of 260-acre gravel pit for $1.88 million requires spending $7,261.54 per acre of Michigan’s residents assets from selling mineral rights on stateowned property, which belong to you and me. Next, all tax dollars collected by the Clinton County Treasurer are appropriated to the General Fund. A line item is created moving the public funds of $470,000 required by MDNRTF to be earmark for the park expansion. “Sound public policy” means to benefit the majority of citizens. Who benefits from this project, its expenditures and who does not? Does a fire sale mean a blank check for our county legislators to lose their heads under the pretext of missing a “golden opportunity” or are the overseers of our dollars obligated to act carefully when working towards the good for the masses? Marie E. Howe Bath

ones we love and care for. We believe in strong family values and that marriage is a union ordained by God between one man and one woman. And we are proud to stand up for every American’s baby’s right to life. The Republican Party can only survive and regain voter credibility if it once again returns to these same core values that all decent Americans believe in. We absolutely will not survive as a nation if we don’t stand up for these principles and we all know darn well the left wing Democrats sure aren’t going to do it. That leaves us with only one choice. We must only vote in candidates who are truly Republican in every facet of their personal, professional and political lives. For the sake of our country, children and grandchildren I pray our Republican leaders will immediately come to the realization that bowing down to the special interest groups and the back room cigar smoking power brokers is not in their best interest nor the long range best interest of our nation. We are individually better than that, and so our Republican leadership must live up to our ideals and standards as well. It is truly time to start cleaning the House and the Senate May God forever bless the GOP and the USA!

GOP needs to return to its roots A recent poll found, for the first time, 52 percent of Republicans are now deeply dissatisfied with their own Republican Party and many have lost all confidence with the so-called “Republican” leadership. Far too many self professed Republicans are affiliated with the party in name only and regularly betray the very core principles upon which the Grand Old Party was founded. True Republicans strongly believe in and live the very principles and values that have made America the envy of the world. We strongly believe in constitutional government, true fiscal responsibility, a non-intrusive government (the smaller the government’s role in our lives the better,) individual freedoms and liberties and taking direct responsibility for our own lives and helping the

Police investigate burglary

Man arrested for trespassing at bar

kpalmer@lsj.com

Thieves made off with a safe, two laptop computers and several cans of beer after breaking into an office building on Ann Drive on Aug. 10 or 11. The suspects smashed a window and crawled into the offices of Hamp Matthews & Associates, rifling through offices and desks before hauling away merchandise on a hand dolly, police reports said. The two computers were valued at about $2,000 each. Also taken were a small safe and four cans of “Badass” beer, the reports said. The safe didn’t contain money, the reports said. Township police collected evidence and were still investigating.

A 24-year-old man was arrested for trespassing and obstructing police after an Aug. 12 incident at a college bar. Township officers had contact with the man after he was asked to leave Lou & Harry’s on South Chandler Road, police reports said. The man initially walked away, but officers later saw him go back into the bar, where management asked them to remove him for trespassing. The suspect resisted when an officer tried to handcuff him then seat him in the patrol car. He shouted insults to the officer as he was taken to the Clinton County Jail, the reports said.

BATH TWP. — Township police were investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins along Drumheller Road, near Webster Road Aug. 13 or 14. An 18-year-old woman who was visiting at a home on Drumheller that night discovered that her wallet, which held cash and credit cards, an iPod and other electronic items were missing from her vehicle, police reports said. In another case, a pair of iPod ear phones were taken from a pickup truck, but the thieves left various electronics and power tools behind, the reports said.

Shoplifting incident leads to drug case A 21-year-old student was arrested on drug charges after police went to his apartment to question him in a retail fraud investigation. Officers were called to the Village Market grocery store on Aug. 13 after the manager reported that a shoplifting suspect had been in the store, police reports said. Officers searched the area and eventually located a man at The Club apartments who had been in the store with the suspect. While in the man’s apartment, they found marijuana plants under grow lights in a bedroom closet, the reports said. The suspect, who claimed he was storing the pot-growing operation for a friend, was jailed on a charge of manufacturing marijuana. The retail fraud case remained under investigation.

Microchipping is a unalterable form of ID M

any pet owners want to know: What is the real value of having their pet microchiped? Quite simply, it is a unique, permanent and unalterable form of identification. How does it work? A pellet, the size of a grain of rice, is injected between a pet’s shoulder blades. It resides there forever doing absolutely nothing. When checked by a scanner, the tiny pellet, like a mirror “reflects” back its special code. Since it does nothing but reflect the code it cannot wear out. Animal control agencies across the nation have these special scanning devices. As a part of the agreement with the chip manufactures who supply the scanners, at no cost to the agencies, every animal they bring into the shelter MUST be scanned. Many veterinary offices customarily scan every pet at the time of presentation. On more than one occasion

PET HEALTH

Dr. Stephen Thimmig chips have been found that the owner was unaware of. In most instances, prior to the pet being adopted, it was chipped by a humane organization and the registration information simply slipped through the cracks. Microchipping really does work! Here is the proof. Some time ago, a client of mine had one of her adult, indoor only, cats escape. Two and one half years later, little more than a mile away, homeowners reported a stray cat digging in their child’s sandbox. Clinton County Animal Control

live-trapped the feline. When the officer scanned him, a microchip was detected. The chip company was contacted. Fortunately she kept her information current, making it easy for them to contact her. Shortly thereafter the pet and his person were reunited! Oh, by the way, microchips are not intended for house pets alone. The cat’s owner has had her horse and mule permanently identified with a microchip. For more information about this and other pet health concerns, contact an expert, your veterinarian. Dr. Stephen R. Thimmig leads the Health Care Team at the Zeeb Pet Health Center and Three Shears for Pets. Visit them on the web at www.pethealth.net.

Back-to-school donations sought slounds@lsj.com

ST. JOHNS — The first day of school is fast approaching, and to make the start easier on the family budget Clinton County Housing & Homeless Coalition, GreatStart Parent Coalition and MSU Extension are sponsoring Project Connect Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Smith Hall on the Clinton County Fairgrounds in St. Johns. To make the event a success, your help is needed. Now is the time to donate gently used clothing, appropriate to school, so it can be distributed at Project Connect. Drop-off sites have been designated around the county: • Bath - Bath Senior Center, 14480 Webster Road • DeWitt - RESA Early On and TA, 13109 Schavey Road, Suite 4 • DeWitt - Redeemer United Methodist Church, 13980 Schavey Road • Fowler - Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 545 N. Maple St. • St. Johns - CCRESA, 1013 S. US-27 • St. Johns - Department of Human Services, 105 Tolles • St. Johns - SafeCenter (formerly RAVE), 323 N. Clinton Ave. • St. Johns - Sparrow Clinton Hospital, 805 N. Oakland St. • Westphalia - Saint Mary’s Parish - 201 N. Westphalia St. Clothing, including shoes and new underwear and new socks, can be dropped off Aug. 22-26 during regular office/ business hours. The Parent Coalition is organizing

the underwear, sock and clothing collection again this year. Their hope is to collect at least 500 pairs of new underwear and socks. Last year’s event served 117 families, including 199 adults and 290 children. “We ran out of underwear and socks after about an hour and a half,” said Maria Cook, parent coordinator for the GreatStart Parent Coalition. About 20 packages of underwear were donated during the 4-H Fair earlier this month. Walmart in St. Johns has donated $500 for the purchase of underwear and socks and the St. Johns Lions Club gave $100 toward the effort, but to reach the goal of 500 pairs of each, more are needed. And Cook says the hope is that each child who attends Project Connect will leave the event with at least three or four outfits appropriate for school. That means the need for gently used clothing is great as well. Clothing isn’t all that will be available at Project Connect. Resources and on-site services will include: Employment services, food and nutri-

tion, housing information, legal assistance and GreatStart Early Childhood resource. Safe Kids and Sparrow Clinton Hospital will be holding a free carseat safety check and fitting in the parking lot outside Smith Hall during Project Connect. Inspections and fittings will be done on a first come, first served basis. Participants must be Clinton County residents and the child who will use the seat must be present. A limited number of free seats will be available. And there will be plenty of free items and services in addition to the clothing, including: free breakfast/ lunch, personal care kits, food items, haircuts and school supplies. If transportation is needed, participants can contact Clinton Area Transit Service at (989) 224-8127 by Monday, Aug. 29 to set up a ride. If you let CATS know you are attending Project Connect, the ride is free. For more information, contact Lindsey at (877) 952-7233.
