Wiswasser playground nearing completion Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

BATH TWP. — Dan Sorensen gazed at the complex of ramps, slides and platforms taking shape as a playground, then turned toward the empty space around it in Wiswasser Park. “The only problem I see is that the parking lot is not big enough,” he said. “People will be coming in from all over. Schools will bring children here by the busload.” Sorenson ought to know. His company, Okemos-based Miracle of Michigan, installs 20 to 25 barrier-free playgrounds every year around the state using volunteer labor. And in Bath, finding volunteers certainly was no problem. More than 80 people turned out to assemble the play equipment in the park along Park Lake Road on Sept. 15, 16 and 17. The volunteers included local residents,

government officials, students from Clinton County Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) and even a few inmates from the Clinton County Jail. Most of the structure was in place after the three-day build. Weather permitting, a crew was scheduled to pour a rubberized compound around the base of the playset late last week. The playground is the first of its kind in the area. More than 90 percent of the play area will be accessible to children who use wheelchairs and walkers, Sorensen said. There are transfer points where children can leave their wheelchairs and go down a slide, he said. Even the swings are handicap-accessible, he said. A $74,500 grant from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund - with a matching amount from the township - is Jason Barnard and Greg Dunlap, of Lennon Construction, help fit a slide into place for the new barrier-free playground in Wiswasser Park in Bath Township. Long-time DeWitt Twp. officer to retire Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT TWP. — The longest-serving member of the township police department is retiring this month after 32 years on the force. Detective Sgt. Rick Smith, 58, worked under five different chiefs during his tenure, which included stints as patrol officer, night shift sergeant and detec-

tive. “I’m going to miss doing the job,” Smith said. “I always enjoyed doing my job. And I’m going to miss the people I’ve worked with and all the people I’ve met, during my career. DeWitt Township has just been a great community to work in.” The township will host an open house for Smith from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Township Hall on W. Herbison Road.

An Ohio native, Smith spent four years in the U.S. Air Force before moving to the Lansing area. He joined the township force in 1979 after a short stint in the Carson City department. Smith served two stints as a detective while still holding an officer’s ranking. After his promotion to sergeant, he supervised the night shift until a serious traffic accident left him badly injured See SMITH, Page 5

Non-homestead tax renewal vote to take place Nov. 8

T

he DeWitt Public Schools Board of Education approved a resolution at their July 11 meeting calling for an election on a proposal to restore the non-homestead property tax rate to the maximum permitted assessment of 18 mills. This election would allow for the collection of the entire 18 mill non-homestead property tax levy, which has been reduced to 17.5412 mills. This proposal will enable the school district to receive the entire per pupil foundation allowance provided under the state’s funding formula. The following is an explanation of the operating millage proposal in a “Question and Answer” format. School funding in general is a complex issue, and the same is true for the non-homestead property tax portion of it. I have tried to organize the Q & A section in a way so that the simpler and more direct questions related to the ballot proposal are near the beginning, with more complex funding issues addressed later on. I hope that this clarifies any questions voters may have on the proposal, but please know that I would be happy to meet with

PANTHER PERSPECTIVE John Deiter any community member or group to provide additional clarification or information regarding the ballot issue. Please feel free to contact me at (517) 668-3001, or our business office at (517) 668-3003, with any questions or to set up a time to meet. 1. What exactly is the ballot language on which we will be voting? The exact language as it appears on the ballot is as follows: This proposal will enable the school district to levy the statutory rate of 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance. Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in DeWitt Public Schools, Clinton County, Michigan, be increased by 1.50 mills ($1.50 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 4 years, 2012 to 2015, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage

is approved and levied in 2012 is approximately $33,435 (this millage is to restore millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963 and will be levied only to the extent necessary to restore the reduction)? 2. Why is this referred to as a “Non-Homestead” ballot issue? This millage would be assessed only on nonhomestead property. Nonhomestead refers to “property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law” as mentioned above. Non-homestead property includes industrial/ commercial property, apartment buildings, rental homes, vacation property, and some vacant land. It does not include a family’s primary residence. 3. How will this affect my property taxes? If you do not own non-homestead property, there will be absolutely no increase in your property tax related to this millage. If you do own non-homestead property, you will pay an additional $0.4588 for every $100,000 in taxable non-homestead property that you own over what you have paid previously. This small increase is due to the fact that this

renewal will move the nonhomestead rate from its current 17.5412 mills to the full 18.0000 mills (5.5412 mills to 6.0000 mills for commercial personal property) allowed by law. 4. If the rate is capped at 18 mills, and we have only slipped .4588, why are you asking for a 1.5 mill increase? The law allows districts to avoid further costs by asking for a higher rate which would be applied only in the event of another roll back in future years. (See question 9-3 below). 5. How much revenue will this provide the school district? If this proposal passes, DeWitt Public Schools will receive approximately $33,000 to use for operations that will not be provided under the state aide formula if the millage is not in place. 6. Is this a new tax? No. This millage was last approved by the voters in 2006. The district had voter approval to levy 18 mills on non-homestead property through December 2015. Passage of this proposal will allow the district to collect approximately $33,000 for educational operations. 7. Why is the term of the levy 4 years?

If you would like to place your business card in this paper... Contact Teresa Sprague @ 517-377-1117

’s people choice

Non-homestead property taxes are subject to being “rolled back” because of the Headlee Amendment to the Michigan Constitution. This roll back occurs when properties are sold and the assessed value is increased. Passing a levy with a term of four years matches the expiration of the original millage proposal. 8. I thought the state guarantees a certain minimum amount of funding per student? The State School Aid Fund guarantees a foundation allowance of $6,846 (2011-12 school year) for DeWitt Public Schools, but that assumes that the district levies and collects the total available property tax millages, including the full 18 mill non-homestead property tax that must be approved by voters. The state makes up the difference between the local revenues that the district has the opportunity to collect, and the minimum foundation allowance. If the district does not collect all of the allowable tax at the full 18 mill rate, the state does not make up the difference. 9. Speaking of Proposal A, I thought that took property taxes out of the school funding equation

and would end millage elections for operational funds. Isn’t that the case? Proposal A changed the way Michigan public schools are financed. It dramatically shifted the burden from property taxes to the sales tax, but it did not eliminate property taxes as a source of funding. When the Legislature adopted the foundation approach to funding education in December 1993, four important changes came about. 1) Property taxes for school purposes were substantially reduced. 2) Rather than millage rates being applied uniformly on all property, different rates were applied to homestead and non-homestead property. Owner-occupied primary residences were classified as “homestead” property and taxed at six mills. Nonhomestead property generally includes, industrial, commercial, and second homes, and is taxed at 24 mills (6 mills base plus 18 mills, which requires voter approval). Since Proposal A, there has been a revision that taxes commercial personal property at 12 mills (6 mills base plus 6 mills, which requires voter approval). See DEITER, Page 12

in March 2006. Smith was driving on Round Lake Road about 5:45 a.m. when his car began skidding on ice and was hit by another car. He spent more than two years recuperating and was promoted to detective sergeant after coming back to work in July 2008. “He’s done some extraordinary work here,” township police Chief Brian Russell said. “He’s a very

32 years of knowledge and replace that kind of a person,” Russell said. Smith is the department’s only detective. He was the point man for the department in court matters and communicating with other area police agencies. It was unclear how the department will fill that role. “As always, we’ll completely evaluate all of our options before moving forward,” township Manager Rod Taylor said. “We want to see if there’s a different way to accomplish something and reduce costs.”

OKEMOS — In her years as a stylist, Suzi Wyman has seen many clients battle breast cancer. “I’ve talked to so many women who have been down this path. It’s so intertwined with what we’ve done our whole lives,” said Wyman, co-owner of Ultimate Inage & Esthetique, 2398 Jolly Road. “We’ve had some of the same clients for 30 or 40 years, and they are really part of our lives. We have cut their wigs and been there right with them.” A way to help the cause – and have a little fun – is the fourth annual “It’s a Breast Thing” event, which takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Eagle Eye Golf Club, 15500 Chandler Road, Bath. Attendees will enjoy complimentary refreshments provided by Eagle Eye, as well as vote on their favorite decorated bras. A total of 32 bras decorated by businesses or individuals will be on display, with the top 12 going in next year’s “It’s a Breast Thing” calendar. Bra models in the calendar are breast cancer survivors, Wyman said.

“It really is a popularity contest,” she added. Once the vote is tallied the bras will be auctioned off, with bids starting at $30. Many bras from past years, Wyman said, are fixtures in local doctor’s offices and businesses. There will also be 10 exhibitors ready to discuss their products and services. Anyone visiting all the exhibitors and getting a stamp from each one is entered into a drawing for door prizes from area merchants including the Mole Hole, Salon and Tan in Eastwood Towne Center and Chico’s in Okemos. Wyman and co-owner Barb McKessy had always observed Breast Cancer Month in October, including making donations to various organizations. Neither has any history of breast cancer in their family. “We just decided four years ago we wanted to do more,” Wyman said. “It’s a Breast Thing” grew out of that desire. While admission is free, donations are welcome and will go toward helping breast cancer patients in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton and Shiawassee counties with out-of-pocket expenses during treatment. “People who are in treatment now get left behind,”

Wyman said. “We’re just thrilled to be able to do something to help them out.” Patients seeking financial assistance must complete a form available for download at www.itsabreastthing.org, along with submitting additional documentation from their physician. Successful applicants, who are evaluated by a three-person panel, may receive a maximum of $1,000 over two years. “We are just so fortunate to have so many people who are (part) of all this,” Wyman said. For more information, go online to www.itsabreastthing.org or call the salon at (517) 381-5432. Calendars will be on sale at the salon and Alliance OB/GYN, 1560 Turf Lane, East Lansing, and may also be pre-ordered at the event.

Group studying local food system schedules community meeting Planning session & potluck to be held on Sept. 26 in DeWitt Twp. Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT TWP. — A group that hopes to build a local food system in southern Clinton County will report its progress in a community meeting Sept. 28 in DeWitt Township. Now known as the Southern Clinton County Food & Farm Policy Council, the coalition held a pair of community meetings in January in Bath Township, followed by focus group sessions on how to get locally grown food from the farm to the table. “We want to bring in as many people as we can to be part of this process,” said Bath Township Treasurer Jeff Garrity, one of those who launched the initiative last year. “This has to be community supported.” Everyone is invited to the “action-planning session and harvest potluck,” set for 7 p.m. at the DeWitt Township Hall. A social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. Initially known as the Southern Clinton County Farm and Food Coalition, the group

started with the goal of creating a community kitchen but realized it needed to broaden its focus, group members said. Last spring, the group held focus group sessions on four key areas - starting a licensed community kitchen, community gardens and “food insecurity,” farm-toschool programs and marketing and distribution. The focus groups were funded by a $5,000 grant obtained through the MidMichigan District Health Department. At this week’s meeting, groups will be formed to discuss specific topics and identify people who’d like to join a committee dedicated to those topics, Garrity said. The SCCFFPC includes people from Bath, DeWitt and Watertown townships and the city of DeWitt. Those communities are collaborating in the Creating Entrepreneurial Communities program run by Michigan State University’s Land Policy Institute. The CEC group is focusing on creating local food marketing and distribution systems. The food systems project is a way to build “more cohesive relationships” between communities in the county’s southern tier, Garrity said. There is strong local support for farmto-plate and farm-to-school initiatives, Garrity said. The SCCFFPC’s task is getting them started, he said.

David and Rosey Ferguson look over fresh vegetables Sept. 20 at the DeWitt Farmers Market. The Fergusons, who live about two blocks away from the market, said they prefer to buy locally grown produce. The Southern Clinton County Farm and Food Policy Council is trying to create a local food system to further that trend. KEN PALMER

When you think heart, think Sparrow. Richard did.

Sparrow’s leading heart team understands the importance of involving patients in their care answering questions, listening, treating each one like family. “He talked to me like he was my son,” Chapko said of his doctor, Matthew Wilcox, DO. After experiencing shoulder pain, a stress test revealed blockage of the arteries in Richard Chapko’s heart. His doctor told him that his heart muscle was still strong, but blocked arteries needed to be bypassed. Since his open-heart surgery, Richard has been rocking while rolling in his classic car. BATH TWP. — Five people were expected to face felony charges in a series of burglaries and larcenies over the summer along the Webster Road corridor. Township police were seeking warrants against the three adults and two juveniles on charges that included safebreaking, home invasion, breaking and entering and larceny from an auto, Detective Gary Smith said. The crimes occurred between June 3 and Aug. 13 at addresses along Webster between Park Lake Road and Clark Road, he said. The suspects, who range in age from 13 to 22, committed the crimes at night while on foot or riding bikes, usually near their homes, Smith said. The suspects have been tied to a business break-in where a safe and some laptop computers were taken, as well as a home invasion in which a television was stolen, he said. Moreover, four of the suspects confessed to committing about 25 to 30 larcenies from autos, most of which occurred in the area of Webster and Drumheller roads on Aug. 13, Smith said. They stole items ranging from GPS units to cell phones to iPods, he said. “Basically, they were just going from car to car, looking for unlocked doors,” he said. Police were able to identify the suspects after residents came forward with information, Smith said. Police have recovered two stolen laptops, a computer hard drive and the safe stolen from the business, he said. They

also found a stolen GPS navigation unit and a pair of walkie talkies taken from vehicles, he said. The suspects broke into the safe at one of their homes, although it contained nothing of value, Smith said. Four of the suspects live in the township and the other in Lansing, police said. The three adult suspects have prior criminal histories, they said. Safebreaking is a possible life offense, while the home-invasion, burglary and larceny charges carry maximum prison terms ranging from 5 to 15 years.

Humanity of Clinton County is a Christian housing ministry with the goal of eliminating substandard housing in our community. Our purpose is to provide a “hand up” not a “hand out,” by building homes with volunteer labor and selling the home at cost to a family who could not otherwise afford to own a home. It is our plan to build at least one decent, affordable and safe home in 2012. The site will be determined in the next few

months. To qualify, applicants must currently have a need for adequate housing. They must be a resident of Clinton County, and be willing to partner with Habitat by working on their house and other projects. Applicants must be considered low income, meet minimum and maximum income criteria and have a satisfactory credit history. To learn more about this great opportunity, informational meetings will be held

SafeCenter receives grant from Meijer ST. JOHNS — SafeCenter (formerly RAVE) recently received a grant in the amount of $1,000 from the Meijer Foundation. “We are very appreciative of the Meijer Foundation for this support,” said Rhonda Hacker, executive director of SafeCenter. SafeCenter is in the process of raising $50,000 for specific improve-

ments to its new facility. Among other things, improvements include paving the driveway and a comprehensive water runoff system. This project would alleviate any water buildup which could cause flooding in the summer and ice buildup in the winter. SafeCenter will host an open house on Oct. 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. at both of its locations: 1300 N. Hickory St., in

Owosso and 323 N. Clinton Ave. in St. Johns. All are invited. Helping people is great This past weekend I attended my 40th high school class reunion. I couldn’t believe all of the old guys I saw there. Most were more than a bit tubby and if they had hair, a fair amount of it was grey. Clearly I was the youngest looking guy there! As for the ladies, all were looking pretty good. I’d say, more often than not, they were virtually untouched by the aging process. It was fun listening to my former classmates expound on their many accomplishments. You must admit, during the past four decades we have seen quite a few changes in our day-to-day living activities. In 1971 microwave ovens, cell phones, extended wear contact lenses, CDs, and personal computers had yet to be invented. Can you imagine life today without any of these conveniences? There were a good many professions represented, including the proprietor of the Brunch House where the reception was held. Some of my

PET HEALTH Dr. Stephen Thimmig classmates are clients. When they started calling me “Doc”, the cat was out of the bag (pun intended). Once everyone knew I was a veterinarian, I instantly had countless new friends! Can you believe that many of these new friends wanted pet health advice? If they had been reading the DeWitt-Bath Review they would have known the answers to many of their questions, as they had been covered in my weekly articles. If the issue was complex or required diagnostic work, I simply told them that they needed to discuss the particulars with their regular veterinarian. I informed all of them that an annual comprehensive physical examination was an essential part of keeping their pet healthy. I explained that a pet ages, on average, seven years

for every year we grow older. Clearly, for us to have a physical examination once every seven years is in no way excessive. During the examination the veterinarian may discover a problem that the owner may have overlooked. This is also the time to discuss other issues. For example, frequent urination. Many times this indicates a medical problem. It is the time to talk about any and all health issues with someone who is trained to identify problems before they become insurmountable. My profession is wonderful. It seems as though everyone has a pet, had a pet, is going to have a pet, or wants to know how to get rid of one. For more information about this and other pet health concerns, contact an expert - your veterinarian. Dr. Stephen R. Thimmig leads the health care team at the Zeeb Pet Health Center and Three Shears for Pets. Visit them on the web at www.pethealth.net.

The bags were then filled with notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, glue, rulers, scissors, pencil boxes, crayons, erasers and more to make life for the children of our community happier and more pleasant. The book bags were delivered to the DeWitt superintendent’s office and will be distributed to each school and the need arises. Roundup: DeWitt spikers bounce back with two wins Geoff Kimmerly gkimmerly@lsj.com

DeWITT — Seven players graduated this spring who had played large parts in DeWitt’s volleyball team winning two straight league titles. But that doesn’t mean the Panthers’ expectations have changed this fall. Although a three-set loss Sept. 13 to Haslett put DeWitt at an early disadvantage in the CAAC Red standings, the Panthers have come back with league wins over Owosso and Fowlerville to improve to 3-1 in league play and 8-5 overall. The Panthers defeated the Gladiators 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, on Tuesday thanks in part to senior middle Arianna Jaconette’s 16 kills and four aces, sophomore Carly Stieve’s 34 assists, senior Cassie Bell’s 24 digs and junior Kaylee Schmitt’s 11 blocks. DeWitt also went 2-3 at the Caledonia Invitational on Sept. 17 while facing tough competition from the west side of the state. It’s been a quick education for a number of players seeing significant varsity action for the first time. “We are younger,” DeWitt senior outside hitter Cassie Bell said after the Haslett loss. “We definitely will be working harder all the time and pushing ourselves to do better and the best that we can do.” The Panthers returned only Bell and senior outside hitter Alex Toth among starters from the team that finished 34-8 a year ago. DeWitt opened league play on Sept. 8 with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 win over Ionia that included 16 kills and four blocks by Schmitt. Senior middle Arianna Jaconette led DeWitt against Haslett with 11 kills and Bell had 23 digs. Sophomore Carly Stieve had 21 assists and seven blocks. The Panthers then bounced back with a

25-18, 25-15, 25-8 win over Owosso. Jaconette had 11 kills that night, with Stieve totaling 31 assists and Bell 11 digs. The DeWitt volleyball team travels to St. Johns on Tuesday. DEWITT SOCCER: The Panthers near-perfect run to begin this fall continued with a 6-0 win over CAAC Red foe Ionia on Sept. 15 followed by three shutouts — including two over state-ranked teams — as DeWitt won the Williamston Fall Showcase on Sept. 17. The Panthers then added a 4-1 win over Haslett on Tuesday. Junior David Waterson scored three goals in the win over Ionia, which then rolled into a weekend of incredible play. The Panthers defeated Ypsilanti Lincoln 5-0, Division 3 No. 3 Grand Rapids South Christian 1-0 in a shootout and then Division 3 No. 2 Whitehall 2-0 in the final. Senior goalkeeper Nick Iacobellis was named tournament Most Valuable Player after making a combined 22 saves in the three shutouts. Senior defender Bobby Perry and senior midfielder Mark Tratt made the all-tournament team. Tratt scored and had an assist in the final and also scored against Lincoln. Junior forward Nick Le scored the other goal in the final and had an assist against Lincoln. Sophomore Mitch Smith scored twice against Haslett, and sophomore Blake Smith had two assists. That win made DeWitt 10-0-1 this fall. The Panthers were scheduled to face St. Johns on Thursday, after press time, and Mount Pleasant on Friday. They will face Owosso on Tuesday. DEWITT SWIMMING and DIVING: The Panthers placed someone first in all events but win in defeating Holt 209-100 on Sept. 15 to improve to 2-0 in the CAAC Blue. Junior Kayla Travis won the 200-yard freestyle (2:17.76) and 100 butterfly (1:16.32) and swam on the winning 200

Practice Focus In Living Trusts • Wills Powers of Attorney Probating Estates

freestyle relay. Sophomore Rosalie Yockey also swam on that relay and won the 200 individual medley (2:23.74) and 100 freestyle (58.64). Four others won one individual event apiece: senior Hannah Schroeder in the 50 freestyle (26.94), sophomore Audra Kimble in the 500 freestyle (6:12.9), sophomore Delaney Toms in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.5) and sophomore diver Gabrielle Roy with a score of 185.7. Sophomore Emily Gustafson and sophomore Marissa Hoffman also swam on the 200 freestyle relay, which won in 1:50.75. Schroeder, Kimble, senior Jessica Reid and junior Danielle Stieve won the 200 medley relay in 2:06.6 and the 400 freestyle relay in 4:18.88. DEWITT GOLF: The Panthers faced some of the top teams in the state from Sept. 15-21, and their top players proved they can hang with the best mid-Michigan has to offer this fall. Although DeWitt fell to Lansing Catholic 155-172 on Sept. 15, senior Anna Barrett shot a 38, third-lowest of the match and by just a stroke, while senior Alyssa Duguay shot a 40 — tying Lansing Catholic

sophomore Jacqueline Setas, who earlier that week shot a Cougars-record 32 also at Groesbeck. Lansing Catholic is the reigning state champion in Division 4 and again ranked No. 1. DeWitt finished 14th among a loaded field at the East Lansing Invitational on Sept. 19 that included ranked teams from all four state divisions. Duguay fired an 88 at Walnut Hills to finish 13th among 28 local players who scored for their teams. A total of 19 teams competed. Duguay then shot a 40, followed by Barrett with a 46 and senior Kayla Lewis with a 47 as DeWitt beat St. Johns 183-223 on Tuesday at Prairie Creek. The Panthers will finish off the CAAC Red schedule at the 18-hole finale Thursday at Forest Akers West. DEWITT BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: The Panthers placed eighth in the most recent area coaches cross country poll, and took fourth in its home CAAC Red jamboree against a group that included two of the top-three ranked teams in the Division 2 state poll. DEWITT — A comment overheard by a DeWitt girls cross country parent explains why the Panthers have been one of the state’s top teams this fall: “My mom told me that she heard somebody comment, ‘There’s a DeWitt girl. There’s another DeWitt girl.’ So knowing that we’re all up there, and people have noticed, it’s kinda cool,” senior Jessica D’Haene said. The Panthers have been strong throughout coach Ron Womboldt’s seven seasons, but it’s been impossible to not notice the success especially this fall. They are ranked No. 4 in the Division 2 state poll, and won the Laingsburg, Jackson Community College and Bath Class 2 invitationals before finishing 14th in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational Elite Race on Sept. 16 — behind nine of the top 10 ranked teams in Division 1, two more honorable mentions from that divisions, and the top-ranked teams in Divisions 2 and 3. Not bad company at all. And the Panthers are proving they belong in it. “This is essentially the same team we had last year. This year, the senior girls especially, the captains, they’re much more focused,” Womboldt said. “They know what they have to do, and they want to go back to Greater Lan-

sing and do well, and we’d love to win the regional if we could. There’s a few obstacles in the way, but we’re hoping to be better than we were last year.” So far, so good. The Panthers finished second to Ionia in the old CAAC Gold last season before moving to the Red this fall. They cruised to a win in the season’s first league jamboree Tuesday, led by D’Haene’s 20:05 as DeWitt’s top five claimed places 3-7. Sophomore Emily Murdoch has posted the team’s fastest time, 19:35, which is 11th in mid-Michigan this season. But senior Lauren Rademacher (19:42) is tied for 13th on that list, D’Haene (19:59) is tied for 18th, Hanses (20:00) tied for 20th and freshman Jordan Lee is tied for 29th. Freshman Shelby Waterson (20:22) is 31st. Junior Kaila Black (21:54) and sophomore Molly Benton (21:35) also have cleared 22 minutes. Rademacher has beaten her best time from last season by 36 seconds and Benton has by 19. D’Haene is only four seconds from equaling her 2010 best, and Murdoch is just 11 away from hers. “Last year, I thought I was pretty sweet to get a 25 or 23-minute 5K. And then I came here,” Waterson said. “I don’t think I’d be near as fast if they weren’t going as fast as they are going.” It’s hasn’t been a matter of putting in more miles, Womboldt said. In fact, he’s had the team cut back a little with designs on saving for the end of the season. But how they’re putting the miles in has been a little

Panthers rally for 27-17 victory over Haslett gkimmerly@lsj.com

HASLETT — DeWitt’s senior football class had a bit of a reputation to shed this fall. They’d run up against obstacles and adversity during a few games growing up — and didn’t always overcome, leaving in some question whether they would in similar situations at the varsity level. Those seniors took a big bite out of that perception with a 27-17 win over rival Haslett on Sept. 16. The Vikings led 17-13 with less than nine minutes to play. But the Panthers stormed back with 14 points and a final defensive stand to remain undefeated through four games and win their eighth straight over Haslett. A botched handoff between senior running back Brian Moore and senior quarterback Ryan Wieber was returned for the Vikings’ go-ahead score. But Moore ran for both late Panthers touchdowns to lock up the win “I’ve just gotta keep my head together and keep playing. I wanted to make up for the mistake I had, and I was able to do that,” Moore said. “When I got in the end zone, I felt ... a weight lifted off my shoulders. “When you’re down, you obviously can’t give up. You keep going.” Although DeWitt has dominated the rivalry of late, and both teams are again in a new league this fall — the CAAC Red — this game had the feel of some of the best between the two over the past decade. The first half played into Haslett’s strategy as it used sturdy running to control the ball for 18:35 of 24 minutes and take a 3-0 lead into halftime. “We just put them on the spot. We didn’t make any adjustments. Usually, that’s a big part of our program. But we just said

12900 S. US-27, #7 • DeWitt, MI 48820

we’re beating ourselves,” DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman said. “They moved the ball up and down the field on us (in the first half) because of mistakes. We had two opportunities on offense, and we beat ourselves on both those drives. “Give a ton of credit to Haslett’s kids; they played their hearts out. But I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of our kids. That second half was one of the better ones we’ve played in a long time.” The Panthers scored twice during the first four minutes of the third quarter — helped in part by a Haslett fumble on a kickoff return. Haslett regained the lead on Varlesi’s fumble return, and had a chance to put the game away when DeWitt fumbled on its next possession. But the Panthers recovered that loose ball — and for a 16-yard gain — and Moore scored his second touchdown of the quarter three plays later to give DeWitt a 20-17 lead. Haslett then fumbled the kickoff again, DeWitt recovered DeWitt’s Colin Rennaker (right) attempts to tackle Haslett’s Joe Varlesi (22) during the and Moore scored once more with 4:02 to Sept. 16 contest between the two rivals. The Panthers rallied in the fourth quarter for a play. 27-17 win. AL GOLDIS/FOR LSJ MEDIA “For us to somehow handle that emotion that swung their way, that momentum, get it back and win that game is a great tribute to these kids,” Zimmerman said. “Now they have confidence. They played together in that second half and did what they needed to do. There’s no question that will pay dividends in future games.” The Vikings ran for 216 yards. Lots of from these local businesses in your email inbox: Haslett rushes meant lots of DeWitt tackles, and senior linebacker Alex Harless and lineman Nate Knauf topped that list Blondie’s Barn with 19 and 12, respectively. Moore finished with 109 yards rushing Coffee and Friends Café and senior quarterback Wieber was 9 of 11 passing for 113 yards and a 31-yard touchIron Quest Fitness down pass to senior Ryan Potrykus. Tony’s Restaurant DeWitt faced rival St. Johns on Friday, after press time. The Panthers will travel Wild Beaver Saloon to Owosso this Friday.

different. Rademacher said the group has trained together year-round, including through the spring track season, and that’s paying off both with speed and a stronger “pack” mentality. DeWitt frequently has more depth than a lot of area teams, but even more so this fall. In five races running their top seven, three have taken turns leading the pack. Rademacher finished first among DeWitt runners in the first three Cherishing the Special Moments in Life!

events — including an overall first place at JCC — while Murdoch led with a 54th at MSU and D’Haene was the fastest in the jamboree. DeWitt placed four of the top seven at Laingsburg, the top four overall at JCC, and then placed sixth, eighth and 11-14 at Bath. “I think we want to run for each other as much as we want to run for ourselves. We weren’t really selfish about it before, but I think that now that we’re more of a pack, we do everything for each other,” Rademacher said. “If you’re doing something for someone else, it makes it easier to try your best.” The Panthers missed the state meet last year by fin-

ishing sixth in a regional that included three teams that went on to top-10 state finishes. DeWitt finished fifth at last season’s Greater Lansing Invitational, and has never won that event. Circle Oct. 15 for this season’s Greater Lansing and Oct. 29 for the regional. “We know our times aren’t quite where we want them to be right now. But we’re just hoping that by Greater Lansing all of our hard work every day at practice is going to pay off,” Hanses said. “And (we’ll) just do it for our coach because he’s the most dedicated coach ever. We want to do it for him and for our teammates, more than anything.”

Bath gridders defeat Carson City-Crystal, 35-26 Bees in tie for third place in conference standings Geoff Kimmerly gkimmerly@lsj.com

BATH — If solid starts are an indication, Bath football coach Chris Rypstra’s program appears on the verge of another step in his fifth season. The Bees’ 35-26 win over Carson City-Crystal on Sept. 9 made them 2-1 to start a season for the second straight — after last year’s 2-1 start was the team’s first since 2000. Bath did fall 34-13 to rival Laingsburg in the County Line Trophy game on Sept. 16, but was one of six teams tied for third in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference heading into the regular season’s midpoint. Senior running back Keenan Thomson scored the first points of the Laingsburg game after a Wolfpack fumble, and Bath led 7-0 after the first quarter before Laingsburg scored 27 straight. “With the young team that we have, we did the same thing as we did against Dansville,” Rypstra said. “We jumped out and had a chance to do some good things early. We moved the ball, did some good things, but never

COME

had anything to show for it. “It takes a couple of experiences to get it right. The schedule isn’t getting any easier, but we’ll hopefully learn. ... If we fix some things, we can play with any team in this league.” The Bees played Fowler on Friday, after press time, and take on Potterville this week before finishing against three teams that made the playoffs last season. Bath’s points total in the Carson City-Crystal win equaled its highest over the last two seasons. Another difference this fall is how the Bees are scoring, chewing up larger chunks of yardage than in years past. The Bees had 418 yards against the Eagles — including 322 running the ball — and averaged 379 yards per game over their first three before gaining just 259 yards against the Wolfpack. Still, of that total against Laingsburg, 235 came on the ground — all more impressive given Bath’s backfield was almost entirely new to start the fall. “They know (the offense), they get it. We don’t run a

whole heck of a lot of plays, but what we do run we rep all year around,” said Rypstra of the team’s veer option attack. “They have to have it down, and hopefully we have the players who can step in and have the right skill sets.” Junior running back Nick Preville broke the biggest play against Carson City-Crystal, a 69-yard touchdown run for Bath’s final points. He finished with 75 yards on four carries. Thomson scored his third rushing touchdown and fourth total of the season, and junior Mike Flegal pushed his season rushing total to 396 yards despite being slowed by a shoulder injury at the end of the first half. Senior Tyler Fitch also ran for a score in that game. Another of the new starters, sophomore quarterback Dylan Moffitt, turned in a second-straight strong performance against the Eagles. He ran for two touchdowns and was 4 of 5 passing for 96 yards. Flegal ran for 126 more yards against Laingsburg and the other touchdown that night. Thomson ran for 57 yards against the Wolfpack.

The Township Board of DeWitt Charter Township is Seeking Public Input On a Proposed BMX/Mountain Bike Course The Township Board is seeking public input on a proposed hy brid BMX/Mountain Bike course on land within Padgett Park, a park located on the south side of Herbison Road west of Schavey Road. . A public/private partnership is proposed, between DeWitt Township and Bikeworks, non-exclusive, located in the Schavey Road Plaza. Volunteers would build a combination track and trail system on a few acres of overgrown land in the front section of Padgett Park. This land was an old grav el pit and has elevation changes suitable for a hybrid bike track and trail system. Ninety percent of the growth in the area would remain in place. Donations would have to cover construction costs and maintenance would also involve a public/private partnership utilizing volunteers. The proposed "adventure sport" track would be available for public use by both youth and adults, free of charge. Only non-motorized bikes would be authorized to utilize the track. The Township Board is soliciting public input at 7:00 p.m. at their September 26th Board meeting to be held at the Township Hall at 1401 W. Herbison Road, DeWitt, Michigan 48820. A sketch of the proposed track is available for viewing at the Clerk’s Office within the Township Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Written comments are welcomed at the above address. Questions can be directed to the Township Manager, Rodney Taylor, at 668-0270 during the same business hours. Diane K.
