BATH TWP. — The township will add a full-time administrative post and more staff in the police department under a 2012 budget adopted by the Township Board. The new administrator would oversee the senior services and parks and recreation departments, handle the township’s website and communication needs and take on other tasks as needed, officials said. The $4.03-million operating budget also includes funding for a vacant sergeant’s position and a new police officer position that would be filled if the township receives a community policing grant. On a unanimous vote, board members adopted the budget after hearing public comment on Oct. 17. During the hearing, some residents urged the board to make Senior Center director Susan Aleo full-time, as she had requested.

Aleo also had asked that an assistant’s position be increased from 15 to 30 hours per week because of growing demand for services. A handful of Aleo supporters held picket signs outside the Township Hall before the board meeting. Township Superintendent Troy Feltman recommended keeping the director’s hours unchanged and giving some administrative duties to the new staffer. Among other things, the new administrator will develop programs and budgets and write grants for the senior center and parks departments, he said. “Everyone agrees that there’s more demand for what they do,” Feltman said, referring to the Senior Center. “But there’s a difference of opinion about how we go about addressing those needs.” Feltman said he’s working on a job description for the administrative services See BATH TWP., Page 6

DeWITT — A rare joint meeting of the DeWitt City Council, the DeWitt Township Board and the DeWitt Board of Education earlier this month spawned two joint projects and the promise of more to come. The three entities agreed to collaborate on a community guide listing local businesses and community

groups. They also agreed to stage an annual community showcase featuring student performances and artwork, as well as local businesses, officials said. “I thought there was a very positive tone to the meeting, and I think we’re setting the stage for exploring future opportunities to work together,” said schools Superintendent John Deiter. The Oct. 11 get-together at DeWitt City Hall was the

first for the three jurisdictions in recent memory. The officials talked about past collaborations - successful and not so successful - and tossed around new ideas for working together. “We tried to update things going on in each of our jurisidictions and looked for ways we might help each other,” DeWitt Mayor Jim Rundborg said. “I think it was See DEWITT, Page 6

Seven candidates seek DeWitt School Board seat Tom Thelen tthelen@lsj.com

DeWITT — Voters in the DeWitt Public School District have plenty of options for the Nov. 8 school board election. A total of seven candidates are on the ballot vying for one of three open seats on board. Each seat has a fouryear term. Current board member Cliff Flood is running for another term and is joined on the ballot by Denise Hamlett, Sarah Hartman, Craig Kahler, Thomas Mollitor, Douglas Vettraino and Janet Zielaskowski. Questionnaires were sent to each school board candidate. Below are their responses by alphabetical order.

Cliff Flood Background information and relevant experience. Flood: I am currently completing my second term on the DeWitt Board of Education. Also, I previously served 10 years on the DeWitt City Council and two years on the Clinton County Board of Commissioners. My spouse and I moved to DeWitt in 1987, and we have three children, all of whom attended DeWitt Schools K-12 and are DeWitt graduates, the youngest in 2008. I graduated from Albion College in 1980 with a provisional teaching certificate, and I substitute taught for a Flood year before attending law school. I worked in a law firm for 18 years before joining the State Bar of Michigan in 2005, where I was appointed General Counsel in 2007. Why are you running for a position on the DeWitt School Board? Flood: Because I feel strongly about the importance of education and care deeply about our community. In these difficult times for public education, I think experience counts and believe that my past service on the Board and my training and skills will benefit our district. Besides, I am proud of the successes of our district and want to see to conclusion the projects that are underway, including the recent facilities updates, the cost-sharing and collaborative initiatives with surrounding districts, and the integration of technology into every aspect of our classrooms. Finally, because my kids are recent graduates, I benefit from both having more free time than when they were in school while also still retaining a strong connection to the district and its administrators and staff. What are your thoughts on the current state of the DeWitt School District? Flood: Our school district continues to excel, even despite the worst recession since the Great Depression. We are one of only a few districts to have met federal AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) requirements and to also earn an “A” from the State for our buildings in each of the last three years. Our MEAP scores are among the best in the area. We have a strong core of caring teachers, administrators and support staff, all with new contracts. We continue to maintain a stable enrollment. We have a new, dynamic superintendent who has broad community support. And we have improved our buildings and facilities with the millage funds our community approved in 2009. The current state of the DeWitt School District remains strong! What do you see as the challenges facing the district in the near future?

Flood: Money will continue to be a significant issue. The allowance our school district receives from the State for each student has been flat or declining. Yet, our expenses have increased, sometimes dramatically. To meet expenses, the district has had to cut expenses virtually every year I have been on the school board, to the tune of nearly $2 million now. Even then, to balance our budget, we have relied on money from the district’s savings account and federal stabilization dollars. Next year, we will not have federal dollars to help us, and we will have to find $660,000 or potentially face more cuts. As in the past, it will take all of us working together to navigate the difficult times facing our school district. If elected, what issue or issues would you like to address? Flood: If re-elected, I will continue to stress the district-wide goals adopted in May 2010 relating to enhanced student performance and achievement, administrative and financial leadership, consistent communication using a variety of media with all elements of our community - parents, residents, school employees and students, and the continued emphasis on integrating technology into our classrooms. More specifically, seeking input from all sectors, I will work diligently to align our expenses with our revenues while improving student achievement. DeWitt has traditionally gotten more and better results from every dollar spent on education than most any other district in the State. I believe experience counts and if reelected, I pledge to work hard to continue that tradition.

Hamlett: All districts in the State of Michigan face many challenges and DeWitt is no exception. Schools have seen cuts in state funding as well as more restrictions and requirements imposed by the legislature. DeWitt, specifically, has been forced to make many staffing and budget cuts as well as tap into the district’s general fund. Despite these cuts, DeWitt students continue to perform well on state-mandated testing and have been able to maintain and improve school facilities. The district has a new superintendant on board and collective bargaining contracts in place that will allow the Board to better focus on meeting the needs of the students in the face of its budget challenges. The DeWitt community is also strongly supportive of the district. What do you see as the challenges facing the district in the near future? Hamlett: The district will continue to face financial challenges and social challenges. Of the financial challenges, the key will be in ensuring that funding is maximized and if cuts are necessary that those cuts do not impact the quality of the education received by our students. Sometimes the cuts that would appear to yield the biggest overall savings are not those that make the most sense for the students. In my discussions with parents and community members, I also see Schools of Choice being of interest with many either strongly for or against DeWitt’s participation. Other challenges relate to society in general, for example, social media. Hartman: While there is always room for improvement, the district provides a quality education for students as shown in test scores and its reputation. Generally the district is in good financial shape, provides a safe environment for children and staff, and is a good place to work and live. I believe that I can help build on these good aspects in an ever-changing environment. What do you see as the challenges facing the district in the near future? Hartman: The state is increasingly taking a more active role over local schools, through various mandates, funding restrictions and educational requirements. As more demands are put on the school, there is less local choice for setting priorities. There will be challenges going forward over how best to spend limited funds. I will use my experience working with others in a positive and well thought out manner to help keep our focus on educating the students. If elected, what issue or issues would you like to address? Hartman: With the challenges facing the board in the next several years, I want to make certain we are focused on ensuring the long-term financial and educational health of the DeWitt Public Schools. I look forward to serving the district to ensure that all of the children in the community continue to have outstanding opportunities in the district.

Background information and relevant experience. Kahler: My wife Linda, our two children and I have been DeWitt residents for over eight years. Our children are enrolled in DPS (11th and 6th grade). As chief financial officer of two K-12 school districts I was responsible for all business functions which help me clearly understand the many challenges of running a school district and maintaining high standards. I Kahler have been a trusted advisor to school as an auditor, a business development manager, including working on school designs, and an investment banker. In DeWitt I previously served on the Board of Education and District Strategic Planning Committee, am currently the DeWitt Band Boosters President, serve on the DeWitt Schools Bond Steering and the DeWitt Y Advisory. I am also active at St. Jude. Why are you running for a position on the DeWitt School Board? Kahler: Throughout my 26 years of education experience I developed a steady hand capable of understanding the financial impact of decisions while also providing an objective, critical eye on budget related recommendations. I also understand and respect the Board’s limited role of setting policy, approving budgets and oversight of the superintendent and will adhere to those clearly defined roles. I have earned a reputation for fairness and integrity in my actions and decisions. Board members must always conduct themselves with integrity and honor even when making difficult decisions. My record of community involvement demonstrates a

I am a co-owner of a local business, American Rentals, and hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Western Michigan University. I am well-versed in every aspect of the financial inputs involved in building a successful company. While running a school is not the same as running a for- profit business, the knowledge I have learned in the private sector will help me make good decisions for the kids in our district. If elected, I will bring business experience coupled with compassion and empathy to the school board. Why are you running for a position on the DeWitt School Board? Mollitor I graduated from DeWitt High School in 1985. Two of my daughters also graduated from DeWitt. My youngest daughter is in the sixth grade. I want to serve on the board to help ensure she has the same opportunities that my two older daughters and I enjoyed at DeWitt. After having spent a majority of my adult life raising a great family and growing our business, it is time to give back and serve the community that helped make me the well- rounded person and successful businessman I am today. We have a great school district. I want to make sure we do not lose sight of this. I want our success and teamwork to continue long into the future. What are your thoughts on the current state of the DeWitt School District? Mollitor I began attending board meetings two years ago and was concerned about some of the decisions the board members were making. To me, it seemed they were being short- sighted and based many of their decisions on short-term gains; not the long term consequences. I was concerned the Board was not making decisions that were best for kids and the district. There was little or no transparency with the Board. Their decisions seemed to be made in a vacuum. I believe it is time for some new fresh ideas and possibly, a different way of thinking. I hope to bring more openness to the school board. School staff and members of the community must be assured their concerns are heard and taken seriously by those elected to serve. What do you see as the challenges facing the district in the near future? Mollitor The primary challenge facing DeWitt Schools is the need to continue delivering a world-class education to our students while facing worsening budget difficulties. It is relatively easy running a business when the economy is doing great. It is during these tough times, when funding is tight, that the tough decisions need to be made. As a business owner, I have faced the challenge of dealing with declining revenues and increased expenses. I will take the lessons I have learned and use them to help the district make the best use of the money we do receive. My focus is on the students. They are the bottom line. If elected, what issue or issues would you like to address? Mollitor: I believe it is the duty of the Board to ensure there is harmony between the staff and administration. We need to build a team where all the members realize that no one group or individual is greater than the whole. Members of the staff can’t succeed when there is strife and a constant threat of layoffs looming over them. While tough decisions will need to me made, members of the Board must do their homework and learn all of the aspects surrounding the decisions they will make. Their decisions must include the overall long-term affect on kids. Decisions can’t be based on quick, short-term fixes. The Board must make decisions regarding budgets and policies that contain long-term solutions not shortterm gains.

A culture of trust and respect must be fostered throughout the organization to enable the new leadership team to innovate in areas of teaching and learning so the entire community can take pride in the results of the entire district’s efforts. What do you see as the challenges facing the district in the near future? Kahler: Economic: A struggling economic recovery will keep pressure on local budgets, especially since the majority of school funding derives from local and state taxes. New legislation will complicate our ability to implement, finance and monitor compliance with these mandates, diverting valuable resources from teaching and learning. My expertise can bring stakeholders together to find innovative ways to improve performance within budgetary limitations. Cultural: Successful school cultures must allow today’s teachers and administrators to implement innovative teaching and learning strategies to mix with proven historical methodology when educating 21st century students. Stability: DeWitt has quality individuals in the key roles of Superintendent and Finance Director. Their management philosophy is open, engaging and collaborative. We need to foster a culture that will keep them in DeWitt while ensuring accountability in student achievement and finance. If elected, what issue or issues would you like addressed? Kahler: Finance: We must remain vigilant in managing our increasingly scarce resources, engaging the community and employees as partners in solving the challenges and ensuring students remain our singular focus. Curriculum: Financial pressures can easily slow the pace of curriculum review and development. Administrators and teachers must collaborate to find innovative teaching methods that yield stronger academic results. We must find resources to facilitate continued growth in this area. Background information and relevant experience Vettraino: As a life-long resident of DeWitt, I quickly learned to value hard work and service to the community. Since 1993, I have regularly attended school board meetings and have first-hand experience with the work that goes into educating our students. I served DeWitt Public Schools for 10 years as a custodian and more than 10 years as the Director of Custodial, Maintenance and Grounds. I have a bachelor’s degree in History from Vettraino MSU and a Master’s degree in Organizational Management from Spring Arbor University. I am in my eighth year serving on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region. I have been a Big Brother and volunteer at events for DeWitt Township, the City of DeWitt, the Friends of the Looking Glass River and DeWitt Schools. Why are you running for a position on the DeWitt School Board? Vettraino: My parents instilled in me a desire to serve the community in which I live. Growing up in DeWitt, I knew many of the people who served on the school board in the past. In 1988, I began working at DeWitt Public Schools. Since that time, one of my goals was to eventually serve on the school board. After eight years with Big Brothers Big Sisters, I will be term-limited off their board in December. Wishing to continue volunteering in a position where kids are the primary focus, it is a natural segue for me to run for a position on DeWitt’s board at this time. What are your thoughts on the current state of the DeWitt School District? Vettraino: Over the past five years, our school district has gone through tumultuous times. Shrinking budgets, unfunded mandates from the state and federal governments and low staff morale played a role in taking the focus away from kids. “Where kids come first” should not simply be a slogan, it should be the words all the stakeholders in the district live by. Fortunately, staff moral has begun to improve. Our new superintendent and finance director are making strides to improve the way our district operates. They are a breath of fresh air. Zielaskowski: I am running for the school board because I believe I have a vast array of experience and knowledge that can help in the decision making process. Due to the budget cuts at the local level, the board needs people who are interested in the DeWitt Schools, students, teachers, and support staff by confronting the issues and making the necessary changes with limited affect. Effective communication is a key element, and I believe my past employment has given me the tools necessary to work with the board and community. Zielaskowski: The DeWitt School District is fortunate to have competent teachers, administrators and support staff to serve one goal - and that is to effectively educate our students at the highest level. Equally important is the support our district has received from the parents and volunteers in the community for continued academic and athletic success. Through continued teamwork, DeWitt can accomplish our goals to improve our programs and to confront the difficult issues. What do you see as the challenges facing the district in the near future? Zielaskowski: The DeWitt School District is not alone in the challenges we face regarding budget cuts at the state and federal levels; therefore appropriate strategies and policies need to be developed in order to make the best decisions for our schools. Schools also continue to be challenged with regulations and assessments dictated by the legislators which need to be examined, implemented and/or developed with less funding. These are difficult times, but I believe we have a strong school system and Janet Zielaskowski together we can meet these challenges effectively. I worked directly with several superintendents, finance directors, principals and other school administrators. I gained important knowledge of our school infrastructure and quickly learned to become a problem solver regarding the complex systems involved with keeping our schools safe and comfortable. Our district needs good leadership. I am confident that my experience and commitment will serve our district well. If elected, what issue or issues would you like to address? Vettraino: Without trust and honest communication between employees, community stakeholders and the school board, our district will stagnate. One of my goals is to make sure the doors of communication are open and real transparency exists. Two years ago, there was a glaring disconnect between those serving on the board and the community who elected them. The school board ignored the input of the community. The election in 2009 reflected this unrest; bringing three new members to the Board and sorely needed change. I had the unique opportunity to work with employees from every employee group at DeWitt Public Schools. I worked closely with teachers, administrators and support staff. Collectively, these experiences have given me the commitment and background to hit the ground running as a member of the school board.

BATH TWP. — Township police were

investigating a string of thefts in a golf course development on the township’s south side. During the overnight hours of Oct. 14-15, thieves stole cash from a vehicle parked in a garage on Timber View Drive and a purse from a vehicle parked in a driveway nearby, police reports said. The purse was found in the front yard of a home on Park Lake Road on the morning of Oct. 15. On the same night, someone stole a set of golf clubs and a GPS unit from a garage on Timber View, the reports said. Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area that night is asked to call township police at (517) 641-6271. Meanwhile, the owner of a vacant house on Center Road told police that several metal items were stolen from the yard of a vacant house on Center Road. The theft was reported on Oct. 14.

A Walnut Street resident discovered that someone had tried to use her credit card and managed to stop the transaction before the money was transferred from her account. The victim, 72, said she was checking her account to verify deposits when she discovered the unauthorized $1,400 charge, a report on the incident said. Township police were investigating the incident.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR County board planning for future Three years after the collapse of the housing market bubble, property tax collections continue to decline presenting a challenge to local government officials to continue to fund core services to the public. The Clinton County Board of Commissioners has answered this challenge and used this opportunity to restructure county government services to be delivered more efficiently and effectively to our constituents. For the third straight year, property values in our county have dropped by an average of 4 percent per year. Even though millage rates have stayed frozen at the same time, county taxpayers, on average, are paying less in property taxes due to the continued decline in the value of their homes. The Clinton County Board of Commissioners has pursued the only responsible strategy - we have reduced the size of government to match falling revenues. Clinton County government has reduced general fund expenditures by a cumulative $1.8 million over the past three years. Clinton County government remains committed to providing taxpayers with the same high quality level of service they have come to expect. We have introduced greater efficiencies in our operations through cross-training of personnel and have allowed positions, excluding first responders, to remain vacant after staff retirement. Clinton County has partnered with the Department of Human Services and the Probate Court to make common sense changes to our programs that have reduced costs and provided smarter methods of handling juvenile cases

to the benefit of our court wards. The Clinton County Board of Commissioners have coordinated with Michigan State University to overhaul MSU Extension to offer more specialized services and counsel to local farmers to help them continue to grow and flourish. We are pursuing grant opportunities with the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund to offer quality of life improvements to our constituents. Clinton County government has saved tens of thousands of dollars in annual savings through a systemic effort to introduce energy efficiencies into county buildings. Virtually every new initiative is pursued as a multi-county collaboration to expand the reach of our services and reduce costs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Proposed Bath property code is unacceptable The Preamble of the proposed Bath Charter Township “International Property Maintenance Code” states that the Bath Township Board seek a balance between individual rights and community needs. They state the proposed ordinance isn’t “about enforcement” and they don’t want to be “adversarial”. Yet they want to create a property cop to make sure residents are in compliance and they want the authority to issue misdemeanor citations for violations of that code. They state they want to “educate the community” about proper maintenance issues. Does their idea of educating mean dictating a forced set of rules that they deem are appropriate for us? Does their idea of educating mean we aren’t allowed to determine what is right for us by our standards? The Bath Township’s vision for the residents of the township may be well intended but it is extremely altruistic and draconian in nature. We don’t need the Bath Township Board to tell us that we need to paint our home, or that we have a broken window, or that we might have rust on a door, or that we need to use a specific paint or paint color, or that our homes don’t coordinate correctly and isn’t aesthetically pleasing enough to meet their standards. Frankly, it is none of the board’s business. Their proposed action on this new ordinance is why people are so disgusted with government at all levels. Decisions like these, where governmental bodies are continually encroaching into every aspect of

our lives is the reason why there is so much distrust and anger with government. I can understand their desire to protect people from landlords who are negligent about maintaining their rental properties but to encroach on the rights of the individual property owner is a violation of our rights in making our own decisions about how we choose to maintain our property. If you live in Bath Township call your elected officials and trustees and let them know that this proposed “International Property Maintenance Code” is unacceptable.

We need board members with honesty, positive community involvement, no hidden agendas and an understanding of the board’s role. This is Cliff, Craig and Sarah. Cliff Flood has done an outstanding job serving as vice president of the board for several years. I have worked with Cliff for six years and he is an invaluable member of the board for his expertise and commitment to the district. In my opinion, the board certainly benefits from his intelligence, persistence and insistence on doing what is right. Craig Kahler served as a school business administrator for two large districts in southeast Michigan before moving to DeWitt. He has experience with school construction projects, school investments and as a DeWitt school board member – making him an invaluable asset to the district Craig is very active in community organizations including Band Boosters, Knights of Columbus and others. Craig has two children in the district. Sarah has also been very involved with the district. In the past few years she has been invited by administration to help with Strategic Planning, interview committees and more. I have seen her display her honesty, integrity, thoughtfulness, and conscientiousness numerous times. Sarah is a CPA and has one child in the disBonnie Rosekrans trict. On Oct. 17, the Bath Township Board of Trustees, on the recommendation of Superintendent Troy Feltman passed their 2012 budget. This budget did not include the requested additional hours from Senior Center Director, Sue Aleo. She requested full time status, which would have meant four additional hours. When Director Aleo took over this position in 2007, the center was serving about 24 to 26 meals weekly. It is now serving over 100 meals weekly. When Director Aleo started their were few if any activities. There are now over 10, which she runs herself. Full time would have meant benefits, and, I am 100 percent sure that is the reasoning behind this denial, as well as many personal conflicts with Board of Trustees members. Many of the Board members have never stepped foot into the senior center. The Board is also looking at hiring a full time administrative assistant to write grants, etc. Grants that perhaps would expand the senior center to a larger building. The center cannot operate on the Director working only 36 hours per week. I feel this Board has college sense, but no common sense.

Police: Woman stole socks, DeWITT TWP. — Two women who were beauty items from Meijer

wanted for probation violations in Eaton County could face other charges after giving false IDs to police. The 23-year-old Grand Ledge woman and 25-year-old Sunfield woman, who were staying at a local hotel, were arrested on the warrants Oct. 15 and turned over to the Eaton County Sheriff’s Department, township police said. Township officers had earlier spoken to the suspects and received false information about who they were. Certain the women were not who they said they were, they relocated the suspects and determined their true identifies, police said. Township police planned to seek charges against the women for possessing drug paraphernalia and obstructing police.

A St. Johns woman was arrested for retail fraud and price tampering after she was caught stealing children’s socks and health and beauty items from the township Meijer store on Oct. 12. The woman, 26, made a written statement admitting the crimes and was released pending a court date, township police said.

To remind me of just how important I am, this past Monday, the people in my employ celebrated “Boss’ Week”. We had a dish to pass lunch. ST. JOHNS — Car-deer crashes showed a sharp increase during the week beginning Monday, Oct. 10 and ending Sunday, Oct. 16. There were 29 crashes involving deer compared to 15 two weeks earlier. There were also 20 traffic crashes during the week. Deputies answered 525 calls for assistance during the week. Following are some details of deputy activity during the week. Monday, Oct. 10 Deputies investigated a 911 hang up on W. Grand River Ave. in Watertown Twp. A disorderly conduct complaint on S. BR-127 in DeWitt Twp. was handled by deputies. A male from Lansing was arrested and lodged at Clinton County

Jail. Deputies investigated a residential breaking and entering on W. Grand River Ave. in Watertown Twp. Jewelry and money were reported as missing. Tuesday, Oct. 11 Deputies assisted DeWitt Twp. Police Department on a residential burglar alarm. Deputies provided assistance to the fire department in Olive Twp. with a barn fire. Wednesday, Oct. 12 Deputies conducted a traffic stop in DeWitt Twp. A Lansing man was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Deputies assisted Gratiot County Sheriff’s Department on an aggravated assault /kidnapping. The suspect was stopped and arrested in Victor Twp. on local charges including operating while intoxicated, driving while license sus-

pended, transporting open intoxicants, and a local arrest warrant. The investigation is on-going. A traffic stop in Olive Twp. resulted in a male being arrested for driving while license suspended. Deputies assisted Lansing Police with a track of a wanted individual that entered into DeWitt Twp. Deputies were called to a two-vehicle non-injury traffic crash on Grand River Ave. and Airport Road in Watertown Twp. Deputies investigated an unwanted subject complaint on W. Grand River Ave. in Watertown Twp. Thursday, Oct. 13 Deputies conducted a welfare check on a possibly suicidal subject on Driftwood Dr. in Watertown Twp. Deputies assisted the Bath Twp. Police Department on a domestic situa-

tion on Clark Road in Bath Twp. Deputies assisted the Bath Twp. Police Department with a breaking and entering in progress on Hunsaker St. in Bath Twp. Friday, Oct. 14 A male was arrested following a traffic stop in Watertown Twp. for operating while intoxicated. Deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash in Sleepy Hollow State Park. An intoxicated female was transported to the hospital with charges sought for operating while intoxicated and several other charges. Deputies were called to a family dispute on W. Saturday, Oct. 15 A traffic stop was made in Watertown Twp. A male was arrested for driving while license suspended. After a traffic stop in Olive Twp., a male was arrested for driving while license suspended and a female was arrested on several outstanding warrants. Deputies investigated a report of a male who had several fingers blown off by a firework in Victor Twp. Deputies made a traffic stop in DeWitt Twp. A male was arrested for operating while intoxicated. A medical examiner investigation was conducted on Crestview Dr. in Victor Twp.

A deputy made a traffic stop on I-69 in DeWitt Twp. for a registration violation. The driver from Flint was cited for a license violation. A deputy made a traffic stop on I-69 in DeWitt Twp. for a speeding violation. The driver from Flint was arrested for a license violation and an outstanding warrant. Deputies assisted DeWitt Twp. Police Department on attempted warrant arrests. A residential burglar alarm on W. Price Road in Olive Twp. was investigated. Sunday, Oct. 16 A deputy provided assistance to a motorist in Olive Twp. DeWITT — Nick Iacobellis made one of the biggest saves of his career, in the sixth round of the penalty kick shootout to give DeWitt their second consecutive CAAC Gold Cup with a 6-5 win over Holt on Thursday night. The Panthers’ senior keeper kept out the only attempt that didn’t find the net in the shootout, which was made necessary by the game ending scoreless in regulation. “This is absolutely huge,” Iacobellis said. “This is one of bigger goals, and we wanted it because we ended up losing the

(CAAC Red) league to St. Johns, and that really hurt.” DeWitt coach Jamal Mubarakeh said winning their second Cup in a row was big for his program, which is currently ranked No. 1 in Division 2, and his jubilant players. “It’s outstanding,” Mubarakeh said. “To me, it’s awesome, great. I’m really happy the way that they are happy.” The game was a typical cup final, with real scoring chances few and far between, but plenty of tough, physical play. “We know that we didn’t play the way we’re supposed to, but we played to win,” Mubarakeh said. “They never gave up, they never let down, they have a lot of heart, they kept fighting, and when it came to the PK’s, we had to have a little luck.” While Holt dominated possession for most of the contest, the Panthers created the more dangerous chances, the best of which came halfway through the second half. Mitchell Smith eluded his defender

near the corner flag and sent a low cross to Evan Smith, who was unmarked about 15 yards in front of the Holt goal. Smith sent the shot wide of the far post, and the game remained scoreless. DeWitt had Holt back on its heels while pressing for the game winner in regulation, but the Rams defense held fast, which was a silver lining for Holt coach Aaron Smith. “That’s our first shutout in about 18 games,” Smith said. “We’ve been giving up one goal every game, so I’m happy.” While no goals were scored in regulation, the teams couldn’t miss in the shootout, converting all 10 penalty-kick attempts in the five rounds. Evan Smith, Derek Butcher, Blake Smith, Nicholas Le and Christopher Lang all found the back of the net for DeWitt, and Alec Greene, Ken Kruger, Jake Welch, Alex Hadick and Jake McCreery scored for Holt in the shootout. After Joe Kaltenthaler calmly placed the first kick of the sixth round into the

net, Iacobellis stood his ground on the next attempt, by Holt sophomore Jacob Dowling, whose shot nearly squirted through. Iacobellis had to reach back and save it again off of the line to preserve the save, and the Cup win. “I like PK’s,” Iacobellis said. “I like the pressure, and it’s just a great feeling. I didn’t want to guess and make a fool out of myself, so I just tried to react. I saw it spinning on the goal line, so I just swatted it backwards.”

DeWITT — DeWitt absorbed their first football loss of the season, erasing a two-touchdown deficit before falling in overtime, 22-20, to Portland on Oct. 14. Quarterback Ryan Wieber passed for one touchdown in the game and ran for another for the Panthers, despite being taken out for the last possession of the first half with a slight concussion. Wieber was stopped on a twopoint conversion attempt in overtime that would have tied, and extended, the game. “He’s a trooper for sucking it up the way the he did,” DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman said of Wieber, who finished the game with 92 yards rushing on 12 carries. “We had to adjust because of the (concussion) situation, but I don’t want to take anything away from Portland, they played really well this evening.” Portland coach John Novara said that the win took the sting out of the Raiders’ only defeat, a disappointing 42-24 loss to Lansing Catholic in their previous game on Oct. 8. “This is a program win,” Novara said. “We had a short week of practice, but I was really happy with how they bounced back. They came out and played hard and played physical tonight.” Alex Haik gave the Raiders an early lead with a 3-yard pass to Justin Ouendag and a 1-yard quarterback sneak that put DeWitt into a 14-0 hole in the first quarter. Wieber led the Panther comeback, cutting the lead in half with a 21-yard pass to Ryan Potrykus that made the

score 14-7 with 6:14 left in the first half. Two costly Portland penalties set up the second DeWitt touchdown on the first possession of the second half. First, a horse-collar tackle on a third down play that would have forced the Panthers to punt, and then a personal foul on a tackle for loss on the next snap set up DeWitt at the Portland 36. Two plays later, a 29-yard TD scamper by Collin Rennaker tied the game with 10:17 left in the third quarter and set up a wild finish. DeWitt appeared to be driving for a late score when Rennaker broke through the mostly airtight Portland interior line for a 54-yard gain to the Raider 15-yard line, but three plays later, Logan Seal picked off a pass at the 1-yard line with 1:21 left in the game. Now it was Portland’s turn to threaten to score late, when Andrew Barr broke free for a 48-yard gain to the DeWitt 39-yard line with 42 seconds left. Haik connected with Ouendag on the last play of the game, but just short of the goal line as time ran out in regulation with the game tied 14-14. Portland got the ball first in overtime, and scored a touchdown on fourth down on an end-around pass by Tanner Allison to Michael Adams, and Haik connected with Ouendag for the two-point conversion to make the score 22-14. Wieber ran in from four yards out on DeWitt’s third play of overtime, but was stopped at the line of scrimmage on the conversion attempt. The win was Portland’s first over the Panthers since 1998, when both were members of the defunct Ingham County League, breaking a six-game DeWitt winning streak in the series. The Panthers will begin their postseason this Friday, Oct. 28, with their opponent and venue to be announced on the MHSAA Selection Show, on Fox Sports Detroit on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.

Mary Belle Laughlin DeWit Mary Belle Laughlin, 90, passed peaceful ly on her journey to our Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, October 16, 2011. Born on June 3, 1921 to Russell Young and Stella Mae (Silman) Young, Mary is the last surviving sibling from a family of ten. Predeceasing her are brothers Albert, Jim, William, and Bobby Lee; sisters Ruth, Lucille, Mabel Grace, Bea and Pearl. Mary is also predeceased by her husband Willard. Surviving are sons Patrick and William, grandchil dren, Patrick, Casey (Becky) and Kelly and great granddaughter Olivia Belle as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Mary Belle will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, mentor and friend. Her impish sense of hu mor and strong personal character will be missed by family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Catholic Community of St Jude Church, 801 N. Bridge St., DeWit MI with Father Dwight Ezop officiating. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, DeWitt Chapel, 205 E. Washington, DeWitt. The Wind Energy Conversion Systems Ordinance addresses zoning regulations to permit wind energy systems in Bath Township. Currently, no provisions or guidelines exist on this type of development and it is the intent of the language to help streamline the process for permitting wind energy systems with reasonable guidelines. The planning commission is addressing and identifying provisions and guidelines for dealing with the keeping of backyard chickens. The intent of the proposed language is to allow backyard chickens in areas outside of the non-agricultural areas of the township. The planning commission is addressing and identifying provisions and guidelines for keeping horses outside of the rural and low density zoning districts through a special use permit process.
