Delta will rock June 25

By MARY JO WHITE

| mjwhite@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. - It’s that time of year again - the time when Delta Rocks! This year’s free, fun-for-the-whole-family event will happen on Saturday, June 25, noon- 6 p.m. in Sharp Park, with free shuttles running continuously from the Lansing Mall parking lot. “We get calls asking for the date of Delta Rocks!,” said township recreation activities director Barbara Sherbo Kellogg. “People look forward to it.” With new valet bike parking available, you might even want to skip the car and peddle over on some of the township’s paths and sidewalks. Also new this year will be pedal cars, one for the very young and one for older kids, courtesy of the Delta Lions and Lionesses Clubs. The cars will have special courses. There will be a new treasure hunt, too, with children given a beginning clue and answer sheet. They must find five more clues and answer more questions correctly in order to claim a prize from the Delta Rocks! Treasure Chest. Favorite standbys will still be available,

Waverly budget approved

By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. The Waverly Community Schools Board voted 6-0 June 13 to approve a budget for next year that includes cuts of over $3 million. Mary Ann Martin was absent. Calling the process “long and arduous,” Waverly superintendent Debra Jones said the district “has created the best balanced budget we could, given the current financial climate for Michigan school systems.” Based upon a projected loss of 90 students next year, the budget calls for six certified staff to be laid off and six to have reduced schedules. Fifteen support staff will also be laid off and three will have reduced schedules.

The high school will lose one of its three counselors, but will have more service by a social worker, according to assistant superintendent Jacklin Blodgett. Because of a cut of almost $200,000 in the educational media services and library line item, the middle school library hours will be fewer. Blodgett said the library will be open at least two hours a day and will be staffed by a library aide. The high school varsity cross country, tennis, swim and soccer teams, as well as all middle school teams, will become club sports. James Clyde, a 2009 Waverly grad with cerebral palsy, asked the board to keep the cross country team a varsity team, explaining how much being on the team for three years meant to him, even though he was never featured in a state

race and never won a race. The transition to club sports doesn’t affect athletes’ ability to earn varsity letters and enter meets, according to Blodgett. It does mean that coaches will not receive a stipend. The budget also calls for a 25-percent cut in hours and pay for both the athletic director and the trainer. Board members were unhappy, but said they saw no alternative to the cuts. “This has been a road of hard decisions for a long time,” said board member Edith Suttles. “I feel terrible. I don’t like to have students come to the board to plead for programs.” “As tough as it is, I see no other choice,” said board vice president Calvin Jones. The board had been required to pass a balanced budget by June 30.

DELTA TWP. - The board of education for the Waverly Community Schools has approved a plan that eliminates funding for eight varsity sports and all middle school athletic programs, part of the district’s 2011-12 budget which passed unanimously Monday. Boys and girls cross country, swimming and diving, soccer and tennis - along with all middle school athletic programs - have been relegated to club status. The district no longer will employ coaches, forcing them to work either on a volunteer basis or help raise the funds for their own salaries. The arrangement will be similar to Waverly’s boys and girls lacrosse and ice hockey teams, which are club sports and have had to include fundraising to pay for their costs. Waverly administrators were not immediately available for comment. Brian Clifford, who coaches the Grand

Ledge/Waverly hockey team, said commitment to run a club sport goes well beyond that of a traditional varsity coach. “It’s not just a four-month job for me it’s 12 months a year,” Clifford said. “It’s a daily thing, trying to run different things to raise money for the kids, to organize the program so that they have the things they need to be successful.” The district’s budget also included a 25 percent pay cut for Waverly’s athletic director and athletic trainer. “This is ridiculous,” said Mary Wilson, Waverly’s longtime athletic secretary who spoke out against the cuts at the board meeting. “No other schools are doing this, no one. We will lose students, and we don’t know if we’re going to be able to get coaches to coach for free.” Wilson said athletic director Rex Peckens’ salary was 40 percent less than any other full-time athletic director in the area. “We’re not going to be able to keep anyone here,” she said.

pig roast in the big tent beginning at noon. The annual Kiwanis Duck Race will launch from Jaycee Park at 1 p.m. At approximately 10 p.m. will be a fireworks display over the Grand River at dusk.

JIll’s Story

I was tired and moody. My life was in chaos. I had no energy for my kids, husband or job. I couldn’t sleep and kept gaining weight in spite of eating well and exercising. My doctor told me I was “normal,” and I should just live with it. He then prescribed me an antidepressant and sent me home. A friend told me she experienced all the same problems, but found a doctor who actually listened to her! Dr. Wycoff told her the symptoms were the result of a hormone imbalance and “not just in her head.” Dr. Wycoff started her on natural hormone replacement and the correct vitamins and supplements. She feels young and vibrant again and so do I!

TURN BABY,TURN!

As beautiful as being pregnant can be, there are some challenges that affect mom, baby, and dad. Yes, believe it or not, we dads are also affected by pregnancy, but we will not talk about that today. Most of the expectant moms I meet want to have a natural and safe birth, avoiding procedures like Epidurals, Pitocin (commonly known as “Pit”), and the surgical procedure known as caesarean section. When baby is not in the proper position for birth it is all but guaranteed to result in a caesarean section. The most optimal position for the baby is head down in the pelvis, curled in the fetal position, chin to chest. This is called a vertex position. Any position other than head down is not optimal for a safe delivery. These positions known as breech or transverse are commonly due to “in-uterine” constraint; an alteration of the pelvis structure, muscles, tendons and ligaments that attach to the uterus. The pressure on the uterus does not allow the baby freedom to move freely into the proper position. Traditionally medical doctors use a procedure to turn the baby when the baby is in a breech or transverse position. This technique involves applying pressure to the mother’s abdomen by 1-2 doctors; this is known as external cephalic version (ECV). The objective is to physically turn the baby using the doctor’s hands. The procedure can be extremely painful and stressful for mother and baby. The risks with this procedure include injury to the mother and baby and can cause the baby to become distressed, which can lead to an emergency c-section. Research shows that ECV only has a 58% average of success and 7% return to breech presentation. There are other options that are less invasive. A specific and safe technique called the “Webster Technique” is designed to relax the mother’s pelvis muscles and ligaments, providing the best environment for normal baby positioning. Dr. Larry Webster is the founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and is an icon to many in our profession. The ICPA defines “The Webster technique” as “a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system and balances maternal pelvic muscles and ligaments, this in turn reduces torsion in the uterus, a cause of intra-uterine constraint of the baby and allows for optimal fetal positioning.” Chiropractic care benefits all aspects of your body’s ability to be healthy. As chiropractors we work to correct subluxations, the misalignment of the spinal bones. When misaligned, these bones/vertebrae put pressure on the spinal cord and the spinal nerves; this causes malfunction in different parts of the body.

As a chiropractor certified in the Webster technique, I feel that all pregnant women should have their spine checked regularly throughout pregnancy to optimize health for themselves and their developing baby. Obstetricians and Physicians have referred numerous pregnant women to us due to chiropractic and the Webster technique being so successful and pain free.

T

he Waverly school board and administration has approved a plan that removes the district’s financial support from eight varsity sports and all of their middle school athletic programs, part of the district’s 2011-12 budget that was passed unanimously on June 13. The Warriors’ boys’ and girls’ cross country, swimming, soccer, and tennis teams have been essentially kicked to the curb, as

have all middle school athletic programs. Putting the merits of the idea and the potentially slippery slope that it creates aside, Waverly is alone among among area school districts for forcing previously sponsored varsity teams to raise all of their funds in order to field a team. Waverly is also uniquely unsuitable as a district for this idea to succeed. If this experiment of kicking some sports out

NEWS IN BRIEF Garden Tour set for Grand Ledge GRAND LEDGE - The Opera House Gardens, which will be among the Garden Tour Sunday, June 26, have been a gift to the community from the community. The tour, with eight stops and presented by the Grand Ledge Historical Society, will be 1-5 p.m. Rain or shine! Gardeners invite you to explore eight of our public

and private garden gems to support this Historical Society fundraiser. Included are city gardens, specimen and decorative gardens, and herb, perennial, annual and vegetable gardens. Advance tickets are at the Grand Ledge Opera House, Ace Hardware, and MacDowell’s Floral and Fireplace for $6 per adult ticket and $2 for children under 12. Day of Tour tickets are $8 and available at the Grand Ledge Museum.

MY VIEW Scott Yoshonis of the school’s athletic department had been undertaken in Mason or Charlotte or Eaton Rapids or Grand Ledge, for example, it would have a much better chance of not crippling those teams. Fundraisers there would be able to use the sense of community in those places, those towns, to get local businesses and individuals to help support them. But Waverly has no town. The closing line of, “Do it for the kids of part of Delta Township and part of Lansing Township” doesn’t have quite the cachet of contributing to the future of the old hometown. Waverly’s boosters, who have had to raise funds in increasing amounts for years now, have always been at this disadvantage

in relation to other districts. Now, every penny of the budget for every one of those teams depends on the ability of the coaches and boosters and parents and athletes themselves to generate revenue, suddenly also competing against each other in a bad economy. It’s hard to see how those teams would not be at a significant competitive disadvantage before they even take the field, even if this idea was adopted elsewhere, where it would have a much better chance of success. This decision may eventually be seen as a major blunder at best, and the beginning of the end of varsity sports at worst. As a result of Waverly’s unique circumstances, the bulk of the financial support of those eight teams will come from the athletes and their parents, becoming pay-to-play on steroids. One wonders why nobody on the school boar failed to bring it up. Waverly has seen more

than its share of students transfer for athletic reasons over the years, but the district has also been a destination for others because of its sports teams. The appeal of becoming

a Warrior will significantly dry up when parents have to pay extra for the privilege. Scott Yoshonis is a sports writer covering Waverly sports.
