Local woman to aid others in heart health DELTA TWP. — Dotti Pearson of Lansing and Delta Township recently became a WomenHeart Champion after graduating from the prestigious annual WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic. Pearson is one of 55 women from around the country, all heart disease survivors, from 27 states and the District of Columbia and ages 33 to 77, who was selected from a nationally competitive application process to attend the four day symposium and return home as a leader to educate, advocate, and support her community on the issue of women and heart disease, the nation’s leading cause of death for women. WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease is the nation’s leading organization representing the 42 million women living with or at risk for heart
disease. “The Class of 2010 is extremely impressive,” said Lisa M. Tate, Chief Executive Officer of WomenHeart, headquartered in Washington, DC. “These 55 women are living with the most devastating of chronic diseases, and yet have made a conscious deDotti cision and selfless comPearson mitment to help other women live heart healthy lives and support those currently living with heart disease.” “I am thrilled and honored to represent this very important campaign to fight heart disease in women,” said WomenHeart Champion Pearson. “I look forward to getting started right here in Lansing and Delta Township to educate the community and support all women in their
quest to live a heart healthy life. Together, we can do it and make a difference.” By becoming a national volunteer WomenHeart Champion, Pearson becomes one of 520 inspirational women from across the country to be honored with the WomenHeart Champion title. These women, the “boots
on the ground” in the fight against heart disease, are available to speak to community, state, and national audiences about the prevalence of heart disease in women and how it is so often under diagnosed and mistreated. In addition, WomenHeart advocates for prevention, early and accurate diagnosis, and proper
treatment of heart disease, and WomenHeart Champions run the only national community based, patient led network of support groups for women living with heart disease. “Heart disease can be a very emotionally and physically isolating condition for women,” said Tate. “Our network of support
groups enables women to have the camaraderie and support they need to make the lifestyle changes necessary to live a heart healthy life.” WomenHeart was founded in 1999 and the Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic was founded as an integral part of WomenHeart in 2002.

Both the teachers’ union, the Waverly Education Association (WEA), and the Waverly Educational Support Personnel Association (WESPA), which represents parapros, secretaries and other non-certified staff, are discussing an addendum to each of their contracts, with votes scheduled before the deadline, according to WEA president Dave Pike. “I can’t predict how independent members will vote,” Pike said after the meeting. “(But) our negotiating team believes we have a fair agreement and we’re working together to meet state requirements.” Asked by Calvin Jones where the money was going to come from for the changes, Blackwell said the cost of the addenda, $211,000, would be taken from the district’s general fund. She emphasized, however, how important it was to snag the SIG, with Waverly ready to apply as soon as the grant cycle begins.
Although he couldn’t cite a figure, Pike said there would be a “substantial cost” to implement the entire plan, noting in particular a 14-percent increase in staff hours at the middle school. The district was required to pick a reform model for the middle school, which was been listed as one of the state’s “persistently lowest achieving” schools last fall because of a lack of progress in reading and math proficiency. “We had to drill down deep to find our areas of weakness (in math and reading),” Blackwell told the board. She said there were nine deficiency areas Waverly Middle School in math, with comprehension the main issue in reading.

Mary Poppins produces real magic T

By themselves the numbers really don’t mean all that much, but couple them with the cast, music and dancing and suddenly you’ve got the magic of Mary Poppins on your hands. Even Mary Poppins is not quite the same nanny we fell in love with during the movie. She has a bit harsher domineer while still keeping the fun loving side everyone knows. She comes into the Banks’ lives not only to watch the children but to teach Mr. and Mrs. Banks (Blythe Wilson) a few lessons on parenting and the importance of family. ‘In the Mood’ coming to Charlotte CHARLOTTE — “In the Mood,” a phenomenon among touring shows after 17 years on the road, is more than a concert. “In the Mood” is a Big Band Theatrical Swing Revue. The show features the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Erskine Hawkins, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, and other greats of the 1940’s. Featuring a company of 19 on stage including the In the Mood Singers and Dancers with the sensational String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra, the show’s music arrangements, costumes and choreography are as authentic as it gets. “In the Mood” takes a retro look at the life and time of America’s greatest generation. This was a generation where everyone listened and danced to the same style of music which ranged
from up-tempo big band rhythms to mellow intimate ballads, and set a mood that inspired a future filled with hope, promise and prosperity. This was a time like no other in our nation’s history, a time when music moved the Nation’s spirit and helped win a war. Come experience the swing, rhythm, jazzy, brassy, sentimental and romantic music of this important time on Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center. “In the Mood” began as a celebration of an unusual era in American music, the 1940’s...the swing era. On radio, in theaters and ballrooms, the big bands were drawing record crowds. Vocal groups and soloists sang a repertory of great songs, and for the last time in the nation’s history, the entire country shared a common popular music. This body of song did much
to sustain national morale during World War II, the pivotal event of the 20th century. The National Archives in Washington, DC brought “In the Mood” to their audiences as part of their commemoration of the 50th anniversary of WWII, and the response was extraordinary, with crowds lining up for hours before curtain time. The engagement was twice extended to extra performances. In 1993, the Archives presented a repeat performance, out-of-doors on Constitution Ave. Tickets for this show are $34, and are still available through the Charlotte Performing Arts Center box office by calling (517) 541-5690 or online at www.CPACpresents.com. A discount ticket price of $24 for students and $20 for World War II Vets is available. Make it a special eve-

into the German army as a young man, he never believed that the Axis powers would win the war. In fact, one of the highlights of his life was his capture by American soldiers he remembers as “fantastic.” “The Americans could have killed us; (instead) they shot over us,” Floeter said. He remembers one incident in which his glasses were hanging askew and, with his hands in the air in front of Allied soldiers, he couldn’t grab them. “If I put my hands down, I’d be gone,” he said. “If I didn’t put my hands down, my glasses would be gone.” He vividly remembers an American GI carefully placing his glasses back on this nose. Asked about nightmares or other signs of post traumatic stress disorder, none of the veterans said they suffered in that way. The overpowering memories remain, however, along with smaller tales about censored mail, inedible food and missed paydays even now, long after these men have married, raised families and pursued successful civilian careers. The memories are their legacy, and in the telling that marks each Veterans’ Day, our legacy as well.

What Will Your Pet Do This Thanksgiving? Many Lansing residents will travel to spend Thanksgiving with family or friends. That raises the question: what to do with the family pet? Nancy Semrau, manager of Best Friends Pet Care, says boarding at a quality kennel over the upcoming holiday weekend has a number of advantages – and some special extras -- for pets.
attention. “Your pet will receive attention from caring people throughout the day. Our staff is constantly in the kennel area with the pets, feeding, cleaning and interacting with our guests.” At Best Friends, owners can also schedule extra one-on-one playtime or cuddletime with a staff member. j Special extras. “Some kennels provide special treats during the holiday season. At Best Friends, our doggy turkey dinner is now a Thanksgiving tradition.” On Thanksgiving Day, canine guests are treated to a holiday meal that includes turkey-and-rice dog food topped with a bit of freshly-roasted turkey and trimmed with vegetables. There’s even a sweet potato biscuit for dessert.

News in brief Debris removal to continue at GM sites
LANSING TWP. — The Lansing Township Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to allow Motors Liquidation Co., also known as the “Old General Motors,” to continue debris removal at the site of two former factories in the township while the township finalizes a demolition permit that would allow the company to finish up the demolition and removal of the factories.GM’s Lansing Craft Centre and Lansing Metal Center closed in 2006. Demolition work that was under way in 2009 came to a halt when GM filed for bankruptcy and the automaker was split into
Motors Liquidation Co. and the new General Motors Co. The existing demolition permit expired on Aug. 31, township Senior Planner Matt Brinkley said. The township anticipates considering issuing a new permit to Motors Liquidation at its next meeting on Nov. 23. Patrick Healy, senior director of demolition and scrap recovery for Motors Liquidation, said the company plans to bid out the demolition work in January and for the remaining demolition work to resume in March.

News in brief Auto-Owners ranks on J.D. Powers scale
DELTA TWP. - Auto-Owners Insurance is ranked highest in customer satisfaction with the auto insurance claims experience by J.D. Power and Associates for the third consecutive year. The company received the Auto Claims Satisfaction Award in 2008 and 2009 and is announcing their third ranking for 2010. Auto-Owners Insurance is ranked highest in providing a satisfying claims experience, and scores 902 on the 1,000 point scale J.D. Power and Associates uses for the study. The company attributes their success to the involvement of the independent agency system in the claims process. “Auto-Owners Insurance is appreciative to receive this award again given the current attitudes toward insurance companies,” said Jeff Harrold, CEO. “It is good to know we can receive recognition based on our policyholders’ high satisfaction of the service provided by us and our agency partners at their time of loss.” Auto-Owners Insurance, a Fortune 500 company, currently holds the status of being ranked the 17th largest insurer in the country. Headquartered in the Greater Lansing Area, Auto-Owners Insurance employs more than 3,500 associates.

A robotic-assisted hysterectomy offers most women numerous potential benefits over traditional approaches to hysterectomies, particularly with more complex procedures like radical hysterectomy for gynecological cancer. Women undergoing robotic-assisted surgery typically experience: • Significantly less pain and fewer complications • Less blood loss and a decreased risk of infection • Less scarring • A shorter hospital stay (as short as a single day for total hysterectomies) and dramatically-decreased recovery time • A quicker return to normal daily activities Sparrow is mid-Michigan’s leader in robotic-assisted surgery. The experience and expertise of our highlydedicated team has made Sparrow midMichigan’s leader in robotic-assisted surgery with more intensively-trained surgeons than any other hospital in the region.
