You don’t normally see three emus named Larry, Moe and Curly, who like to peck grain right out of your hand, either. And it was fun to watch a very young pony take a well-earned mid-day nap. Costs for most of other items were modest. A Lion’s Club hot dog for a dollar, for instance, and 75-cents for a turn in an inflatable or a carnival ride. Besides the township, this year’s Delta Rocks! sponsors were Meijer, Mark’s Lock Shop, the Mid-MI Active Transportation Coalition, MSU bikes, the League of MI Bicyclists and MidMEAC.

JUMP!?!

We just had the first trampoline related injury of the year come into our office. She is a beautiful active girl who has been a patient of ours for 3 years. Every year I have come across a child who has been injured on a trampoline. So let’s look at this a little closer before you let them jump. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued warnings as far back as 1977, 1981, and 1999 emphasizing the dangers of trampolines, recommending they not be used at home or in school physical education classes. The kids kept jumping and I want you to see where it got us. A report by Pediatric Neurosurgery done in 2000 stated, “That in 1998 trampolines were responsible for more than 6,500 pediatric neck injuries”. According to Consumers Reports in 2003, 98,000 people were treated in emergency rooms due to trampoline use. Of this 98,000, 50,000 of these emergency room visits were children. Right now I am trying to consider if the benefits outweigh the risks. The 2001 Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports there have been 11 deaths (6 of them under age 5) since 1990. Gary Smith chairman of AAP’s Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention, also former Director of Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Columbus, supports a complete ban on home trampolines. He states, “We’ve seen the number of trampoline related injuries skyrocket in just six years, the trend doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Instead, it’s continuing to increase.” Did you know that baby-walkers are banned in Canada yet trampolines cause twice as many injuries as baby-walkers! Smith also states, “The injuries sustained were severe injuries to the spinal cord, which usually lead to paralysis and quadriplegia”. Many childhood activities and traumas can cause the vertebrae (bones of the spine) to lose their normal motion and position. Delicate nerve tissue can be damaged resulting in interference in the brain’s ability to control associated organs and tissues; we call this Vertebral Subluxation. In order to have the best health possible all of the messages need to get from the brain to the body. Chiropractors find these areas that are not functioning properly and restore proper function allowing your child to have the best health possible. I have not read anything mentioning the recent use of safety nets decreasing the chance of injury. If you insist on having a trampoline in your backyard, my recommendations are to limit the amount of time children are on the trampoline! Limit the number of people on the trampoline; I would think one at a time would prevent collision. Always have adult supervision. The younger the child the less developed their musculature is and more the reason to not allow or limit young kids from the repetitive trauma of jumping. The repetitive jumping can also compress the discs and supporting tissue of the spine. Don’t get me wrong I would much rather see a child living life playing outside versus rotting and melting their brains with television and video games. I want you to have the facts so you can make informed decisions to raise your children as healthy as possible!

Soccer Continued from Page 5

“club” sports. Jay Pollice had coached the Warrior boys’ soccer team for the past eight years before resigning after last season. “I just feel terrible for the kids who are there right now,” Pollice said. “I don’t know what they’re going to do. I’ve had kids go to play soccer in different districts, and now I’m glad that they did, now that the program has been cut.” Pollice said that, of all the sports that have been changed from varsity sports to club sports at Waverly, soccer, swimming, tennis and cross country this year and golf last year, soccer will have the hardest time raising sufficient funds to continue. “The fields, the coaches, the officials and all of the stuff that goes into it, I really don’t think that you can ask kids to pay six, seven, eight hundred dollars to play this sport,” he said. The girls’ varsity coach, Nick Burns, has been a part of the boys’ soccer booster

club, for years. The Waverly Soccer Club was founded in 1992 to help support the boys’ soccer program. The club has fallen dormant in recent years, with Burns, its treasurer, and secretary Ann Perez being the only officers still in the club since their last election. Burns is now attempting to revive the club, and add the girls’ program. “It remains to be seen if they will be able to supply the funding necessary to have a program,” Burns said. “The big thing for the girls is, will there be enough girls who will be willing to pay to play a club sport? I’m 99 per cent sure that we won’t have a JV team because of this.” For the newly-categorized club sports, the primary expense will be paying the coaches. Pollice said that he was paid $4,700 to coach the boys and Burns said that his compensation for heading the girls program last year was $3,500. Burns put together a preliminary budget for the teams, which included $1,500 for each of the coaches’ salaries. Pollice said that the teams would be hard pressed to find a suitable

coach for that money. “I personally would not have wasted my time for $1.500, that’s insanity,” he said. “A varsity sport has a year-round coaching position as it is. The $4,700 I was making didn’t come near to the amount of time that I put into the sport.” Waverly superintendent Deb Jones said that she expects the soccer programs, as well as the other newly-formed club sports, to continue to thrive. “I think that we’re creating as best a win-win as we can,” Jones said. “The swim team was down to six participants this year from Waverly, and they have very graciously accepted club status. To say that we’re not financially supporting some of those sports that are going to turn into club sports is not true.” Burns is currently running the boys’ summer program on a volunteer basis, and will seek the boys’ head coaching job. “They have a great team, and these kids want to play, so I volunteered to coach them this summer,” he said. “They need some kind of mentor out there to keep them straight, but it’s not something that I can afford to do for nothing.”

Know Your Investment Risks — and How to Respond When you invest, you take some risks. While you can’t totally avoid these risks, you can take steps to help reduce their impact and increase your comfort level. And the more comfortable you are with your investments, the easier it will be to follow a longterm strategy that can help you meet your goals. Let’s look at the most common types of risk related to investing, along with some suggestions on helping to reduce these risks: Losing principal — This type of risk is most closely associated with investing. For example, when you purchase a stock, you know that its value could go up or down. If it drops below your purchase price, and you then sell your shares, you will lose some of your principal. Your response — You can’t eliminate the risk of losing principal, but by owning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other types of investments, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Losing value when interest rates change — This type of risk primarily affects fixed-income investments, such as bonds. If you purchase a bond that pays, say, a 4% interest rate, and the market rate goes up to 5%, then the value of your bond will drop because no one will be willing to pay you the full price for it when newer, higheryielding bonds are available. Your response — You can combat, or even ignore, interest rate risk by holding your bonds until they mature. By doing so, you’ll get your full principal back, provided the issuer doesn’t default, and you’ll continue to receive regular interest payments unless the bonds are “called,” or repurchased by the issuer. (You can

help protect against this by purchasing bonds that have some degree of “call protection” and by owning bonds with different maturities.) Losing purchasing power — This risk largely applies to fixed-rate investments such as certificate of deposit (CDs). To illustrate: If you purchase a CD that pays 2%, and the inflation rate is 3%, you are actually losing purchasing power. Your response — Despite their vulnerability to inflation, CDs can offer you some valuable benefits, such as preservation of principal. Yet if you are concerned about fighting inflation, you may want to look for investments that have the potential to offer rising income, such as dividend-paying stocks. In fact, you can find stocks that have increased their dividends for many consecutive years. (Be aware, though, that companies can reduce or eliminate dividends at any time. Also, an investment in stocks fluctuates, and you could lose your principal.) Apart from these individual techniques to reduce investment-related risk, you should also save early and save often — because the more money you accumulate, the greater your ability to follow a long-term strategy that reflects your personal risk tolerance. That’s why it’s a good idea to contribute as much as possible over the years to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. By understanding the different types of investment risk, and by acting to help lessen them, you can reduce much of the stress sometimes associated with investing — while you increase your prospects for achieving your objectives. Delta’s Eastbury Path set to open in mid-July By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. Bikers and walkers will soon be able to travel from Creyts Road to Eastbury Drive without accessing either Saginaw or Willow, thanks

to completion of a brand new path. Ten feet wide, the mixed use path will be concrete on either side of wooden approaches to a bridge over Carrier Creek. “If the weather cooperates, it could be

ready by the end of the second week in July,” said Dick Cross, township engineering technician. Cross was onsite Monday, June 27 when employees of Laux Construction, the primary contractor for the project, were assemblying

the approach to the bridge on the east side. The original cost was pegged at $257,900, with $128,000 coming from a federal grant. As the project progressed, though, the price tag went up almost $34,000 due to extra work needed near the creek. The township also had to apply for a permit from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment because of the

bridge, as well as the fact that part of the path falls in the flood plain. Partofthetownship’sNonMotorized Transportation Plan, the Eastbury Path will directly connect with another path that runs from Sharp Park to Creyts. “One of the biggest goals for me (concerning the paths) is that people have the opportunity to be outside and be safe,” said trustee Barb Poma. “Maybe

the new path will (even) take them to parks they’ve never been in.” Delta Mills Park, for instance, is a short ride north from the east end of the Eastbury Path on another path along Creyts Road. There has been some board discussion about extending the Eastbury Path all the way to Canal Road, but no decision has been made.

DELTA TWP. - On Sunday July 17, at 9:45 a.m., The Community Baptist Church, 7832 W Mt Hope Hwy. just west of Canal Road, will host Dr Tim Schmig and his lecture, “Faith of Our Fathers,” with a barbecue chicken lunch provided for free. This special presentation details the Christian Heritage stories behind some of our Founding Fathers. Schmig spends much of his time in Lansing and Washington D.C. meeting with elected officials on both sides of the political aisle. The Congressional Record entered, Sept. 25, 2002 impart, records these words:“Tim is an Advocate with Integrity. Lawmakers have come to trust Tim and rely on his know ledge of the issues and his wellinformed advocacy on a variety of issues. He truly has earned the respect and the influence he has in the

halls of Congress and in the Michigan Legislature.” If you listen to the voices who claim to speak with authority about our Founding Fathers you will hear them say “they were all atheists, agnostics or deists” and leave that out there as if it were matter of fact. Really? Join us for a closer look at some of the Founding Fathers in the Famous John Trumbull Painting that hangs in the Rotunda of the Capitol in DC. It might surprise you to hear “the rest of the story.”
