DELTA TWP. A system to get clean water to homes and take away and process their dirty water is one of the things which distinguish life in a city from life in the country, where people have to do it themselves with wells and septic tanks. This service is not free, and its cost varies widely among local communities, with consumers in Delta Township consistently paying the lowest rate among several local communities recently surveyed and Potterville the highest. A typical one-person household in Delta, for instance, pays less than half of what a similar person pays in Charlotte, Eaton Rapids or Potterville. Even families of four who fill swimming pools or water their lawns a lot are better off in Delta, paying

$268 a quarter, compared to $376 in Eaton Rapids and $427 in Potterville. In all of the communities surveyed, water and sewer rates are made up of two components — a fixed charge, which is the same no matter how much is used, and a variable charge, which is based on usage. Grand Ledge also has a unique twotier feature so low

volume users pay a lower variable rate than high volume users. Part of the reason Delta has kept rates low is its decision to spread a recent 16-percent increase for water from the Lansing Board of Water and Light over three years, so customers felt the hike less. The township has also taken advantage of new technology to

This special presentation details the Christian Heritage stories behind some of our Founding Fathers. Schmig spends much of his time in Lansing and Washington D.C. meeting with elected officials on both sides of the political aisle. If you listen to the voices who claim to speak with authority about our Founding Fathers you will hear them say “they were all atheists, agnostics or deists” and leave that out there as if it were matter of fact. Really? Join us for a closer look at some of the Founding Fathers in the Famous John Trumbull Painting that hangs in the Rotunda of the Capitol in

Former Warrior AD honored by MHSAA EAST LANSING – Former Waverly athletic director Rick Schmidt has been honored with the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Allen W. Bush Award for 2011. Schmidt has just completed his 23rd year as an athletic director in the Greater Lansing area, and his 10th at Holt High School, where he administers a 27-sport program. While at Holt, he has been a force in the development of new athletic facilities that play host to a number of MHSAA Tournament events each year. For 13 years prior to his current position at Holt, Schmidt was the athletic administrator at Waverly High School, where he also coordinated community activities, including senior citizen programming and Summer youth recreation. He also coached baseball and basketball while at Waverly at different levels, and spent two seasons as the varsity baseball and seven years as the girls varsity basketball coach at

the school. He also served as an advisor to the Student Senate at Waverly. Schmidt has worked closely with the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, serving on committees and earning the title from the association as a Certified Athletic Administrator. The MIAAA honored Schmidt as a Regional Athletic Director of the Year in 2000. He has also been involved with the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, the Mid-Michigan Area Athletic Directors Association and served a term as the Secretary for the Capital Area Conference from 1999-2001. A 1982 graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in education, physical education and leisure; Schmidt was a recreation coordinator for Waverly Community Services and a program coordinator for the Michigan Recreation and Parks Administration prior to going into school athletic administration. “Rick Schmidt brings a can-do atti-

tude to his work that has resulted in first-class athletic programs on his watch,” said John E. “Jack” Roberts, executive director of the MHSAA. “He has been a great leader by example, and has won the respect of everyone around him by showing how much he cares. These are traits that make him an excellent choice for the Bush Award.” Al Bush served as executive director of the MHSAA for 10 years. The award honors individuals for past and continuing service to prep athletics as a coach, administrator, official, trainer, doctor or member of the media. The award was developed to bring recognition to men and women who are giving and serving without a lot of attention. This is the 19th year of the award, with the selections being made by the MHSAA’s Representative Council.

Eaton County 4-H Fair: Close to home fun Rachel Greco rgreco@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — It brings upwards of 28,000 people to the Eaton County Fairgrounds every July. To nearby residents the Eaton County 4-H and Youth Fair is a close-tohome summer escape, but organizers say the six-day tradition — which will run July 11 to 16 this year — is the result of a year’s hard work and dedication. Randy Johnson has been a member of the 15-seat fair board for 12 years. He said the group is more than an overseeing authority for the fair — it is also the caretaker for the fairgrounds, with its volunteers at a moment’s notice rolling up their sleeves to repair barn doors and remodel buildings. “Being on the fair board is like having a second job,” admitted Johnson. “We are a working board, fixing things on the grounds. We only contract out things that we have to.” In fact, in the past year the fair board — which includes a licensed electrician and mechanic — completely remodeled Kardel Hall, put new floor drains in the barns were students showcase their livestock

and performed general upkeep on other buildings. Johnson said those involved don’t mind. “We’re here for the kids,” he said. “We like what we do.”

Small profits

Theo Savage is the board’s vice president and a 27-year veteran with the county’s fair. He said last year the event — which includes everything from midway carnival rides, to arts and crafts and grandstand events like demolition derby — brought in $60,000. Any profits made one year are used to finance next year’s fair. Savage said the event has never lost money, but simply breaking break even has been a struggle some years. Savage said last year people turned up at the fair, having decided not to spend money on a vacation away from home. He hopes to see more of that this year. “I’m hoping we get a lot of people, local people, who can’t go on vacation and will come down to the fair even if they haven’t been here for a few years.” If they do, fair-goers will find one $5 admissions fee at the gate. Rides and grandstand events cost

extra — but Savage points out that many visitors simply want to see the 4-H exhibits and animals.

Tradition

According to Jennifer O’Neal, the county’s 4-H extension educator, the majority of the area’s 650 4-Hers, ages 5 to 19, take part in the fair. They showcase performing arts skills, crafts including woodworking and sewing and they show and sell various animals. “Fair is to a 4-Her what the finals are to a basketball team,” said O’Neal. “They work all year long preparing for the opportunity to show what they’ve learned.” Young people who bring animals to the fair care for them from September to July.O’Neal said the experience hones their caretaking and leadership skills and teaches budgeting and marketing techniques. “Most of the kids are down there all week, every day,” she said. Johnson said both of his children are in 4-H and take part in the fair. “4-H and FFA are two of the best leadership programs you can put your kids in as far as I’m concerned,” he

Ethan and Luke recieved the grand champion prize in the Cart and Pack Suitability judging. GREG DERUITER/LSJ. said. Older members, through their example, provide younger members leadership lessons. “A 13-year-old, to a 7 year old, is a hero in 4-H,” she explained. “That’s the magic of it.”

the 4-H projects and their youthful creators, are reason enough for people to attend the fair. The tractor pulls, music, motor cross, rides and traditional fair food

are usually attractions for out-of-town visitors. “People come out from Lansing, DeWitt, Okemos and Jackson,” said Savage. “We want them to keep coming.”

Optimistic

Savage said the animals and their young owners,
