Delta, Waverly host emergency rescue event Eaton County fair draws many MARY JO WHITE
Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com
CHARLOTTE — From elephant ears and camel rides to prize-winning lambs in costume, grandstand shows and midway games, this year’s Eaton County fair had something for everyone. Eleven-year-old Madelyn Kidder of Springport, for instance, was sweltering in her home-made Grinch costume July 12, with her lamb dressed in pigtails and a red tutu. The lamb’s name? Cindy Lou Who, of course. Kidder took first place in the costume contest, fol-
lowed closely by Skylee Sherman, also 11, a Potterville student who lives in Grand Ledge and whose family raises 20 head of cattle. Sherman and her lamb were pretending to be nerds, the lamb decked out in a tie and backpack and Sherman with horn rimmed glasses and a book under her arm. For many families 4-H is really the heart of the fair. The clubs teach responsibility, both for animals and younger kids, provide camaraderie and allow for a lot of fun. See FAIR, Page 10

DELTA TWP. – Emergency medicine residents from Sparrow Hospital had a chance to experience exactly how some of their patients are rushed to the hospital for treatment, thanks to a “This is a good unique training hands-on exercise experience coordinated by the Delta both for the Township residents and Fire Department for our on July 14. personnel.” Delta had previously JOHN CLARK sponsored Delta Township emergency fire chief rescue trainings involving extricating car crash victims, but none had involved air transport, according to firefighter/ paramedic Brian Hatfield, who organized the event. The exercise began in the Waverly High School parking lot where a LifeNet of Michigan helicopter touched down at 8: 30 a.m. Flight paramendic Nate Kunik and nurse Bob Weiler explained how their rescue team operates, then doctors had a chance to inspect the copter’s interior and climb aboard.. Resident Rick Maier even decided to lie down on the copter’s stretcher, which was then stowed for flight, to get the perspective of a patient. Then it was on to the Delta Fire Department training building across the street, the former church on the corner of Snow Road and Michigan Avenue.
See RESCUE, Page 14
Above: Delta Township firefighters brought plenty of gear for the Sparrow residents to use in the emergency training exercise July 14. The morning gave the doctors the opportunity to experience at least some of what their patients go through before they wind up in the emergency room. and services that promote children’s self-esteem, well-being and sense of community, is hosting a golf outing to benefit children. The annual golf benefit will be held on Saturday, July 23, at Centennial Acres Golf Course in Sunfield. Proceeds will be used to send kids to Camp Forget-Me-Not, a therapeutic camp for children who have lost a loved one. Funds will also provide disadvantaged kids with the opportunity to join the Lansing Soccer Club. Sponsors at this year’s event include OfficeMax, Sandy and Neil Macvicar, The Lions Club of Holt and the Lansing Delta Lioness Club. Registration for the four-person scramble begins at 1 p.m. A shotgun will follow at 2:30 p.m. Registration includes 18 holes, cart fees, range balls, and all meals. The cost is $50 per golfer. Various levels of sponsorship are available. Visit youthfulgiving.org to register.
Golf outing to benefit Library DELTA TWP. - A golf outing to benefit the Delta Township District Library is
slated for Friday, July 22 at the Grand Ledge County Club. The benefit is being organized by the Delta-Waverly Rotary Club. Golfers will tee off in a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and will compete using a scramble format. Lunch and dinner are included for those participating in the benefit. There is still space available for teams to register for the benefit outing. Costs for the afternoon of food, golf, and fun are $75 per golfer, or $300 for a foursome. For those non-golfers who wish to join in the fun and still benefit the library, dinner only tickets are $25 each. A few sponsorship opportunities are still available for the benefit outing. Contact Kent Housler (kent@personnelworld.com) or by phone, 517-323-3500. “The benefit golf outing is a great way for golfers to support Rotary’s commitment to the Delta Township District Library,” said Library Director Cherry Hamrick. “The library greatly appreciates Rotary’s continued support of the library, both financially and by volunteering time to help with the annual Run for Reading and Teen Mentoring.” The Delta-Waverly Rotary Club Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation.

BABY TALK – PART I So you just found out you’re pregnant. Congratulations! That is wonderful! What is even more amazing is that your baby already has a spine, most of the body organs, arms and legs beginning to form, and its own nervous system. And it’s only 5 weeks old! Miraculous! In order for your baby to develop normally, it has two basic needs: One is proper nutrition and the other is a normally operating nervous system. Let’s cover nutrition first. At the risk of insulting my readers, some people operate under the impression that as long as they are not hungry, they eat well. Not true! As a mom, you must be aware of the fact that everything you eat and drink affects your baby. Everything! Generally the baby will take from the mother whatever it needs in terms of nutrition and I have met many mothers in my practice who are literally undernourished as a result. As a mom, you must remember that you are eating for two. Simply “filling up” is not the answer. Your baby has very specific needs as it is growing and developing. Its rate of growth is seven times faster than its three-year-old brother. Much like feeding a baby elephant some may say! The baby will take as much as it can from mom so it is important that mother provides proper fuel for all that rapid growth. So the following are essential for normal development of your baby: 1. Iron. Mom requires at least 800 mg daily. This is crucial for the development of red blood cells in your baby and is contained in most dark leafy veggies. If you must, you can obtain a liquid iron supplement from a health food store. The nicest way of getting iron is from a tablespoon of dark molasses in a glass of milk three times a day. What a way to treat your baby! Taking Vitamin C will help in the absorption of Iron from your digestive tract. 2. Folic Acid. This is very important in the normal development of the nervous system and cannot be omitted. You are lucky though, Folic Acid is contained in most foods which contain iron so it’s a cinch to get. If you really want to get fancy, Oysters are loaded with Folic Acid. They are also a known aphrodisiac and that may be why you are reading this, but that is another topic! 3. Calcium. Our friend! Mom and baby need at least 1200 mg daily. Broccoli is the best source of calcium or you may try raw almonds if you are not into broccoli. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of Calcium from the digestive tract. This can be tricky because Vitamin D can also cause nausea and “morning sickness”. I found that the easiest way of getting Vitamin D is from a careful suntan; whether it be outside or in a reputable tanning salon. If you do decide to use the “electric beach”, be careful of heat. Babies do not like getting too hot! I would also like to caution moms on taking Vitamin B6 when pregnant. It tends to reduce the amount of breast milk available for feeding; not a good thing! I’ll continue in two weeks. See you then! July 17, 2011

Fair Continued from Page 1
Sixteen-year-old Grand Ledge High School student Jayne White spent a good chunk of time July 12 helping the much younger Lainy O’Neal get her lamb ready for show. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Rosalyn Brummette, also from Grand Ledge, worked up a sweat shearing 12-year-old Gabby Westman’s lamb. The Future Farmers of America program is so important to Brummette that she’s dual enrolled in both Grand Ledge and Charlotte High Schools and hopes to practice environmental or agricultural law someday. All four girls belong to the Grand Ledge Golddiggers 4-H club. Parents filled the grandstand near the sheep section of the fair, applauding their kids’ hard work as well as their willingness to help each other succeed. It wasn’t only the 4-Hers demonstrating responsibility at the fair. Ten-tear-old Marygrace Merrill of Olivet was fundraising for a trip
The Feris Wheel is one of the many carnival rides at the Eaton County Fair MARY JO WHITE / LCN with the Girl Scouts to Chicago. A tableful of goodies she’d baked herself, as well as many items crocheted by her mom was waiting for customers. Merrill’s goal is a lofty one - the Chicago trip will cost $400. Fairgoers feasted on deep fried veggies and bologna sandwiches , funnel cakes, turkey legs and hot dogs. They rode the Dodge-Em cars, soared over the midway on the ferris wheel and turned themselves upside down on
the Zipper. Reaching the red button at the top of the Loonie Ladder meant a giant stuffed animal prize and there were many persistent takers, including 9-yearold Matthew Peterson of Olivet. By midweek, the crowd of fairgoers was up from last year, according to Betty Parish, fair office secretary, who said she expected the final count would be about 28,000 people when it concludes on July 16.

CHURCH BRIEFS
DELTA TWP. - On Sunday
July 17, at 9:45 a.m., The Community Baptist Church, 7832 W Mt Hope Hwy. just west of Canal Road, will host Dr Tim Schmig and his lecture, “Faith of Our Fathers,” with a barbecue chicken lunch provided for free. This special presentation details the Christian Heritage stories behind some of our Founding
Fathers. Schmig spends much of his time in Lansing and Washington D.C. meeting with elected officials on both sides of the political aisle. The Congressional Record entered, Sept. 25, 2002 impart, records these words:“Tim is an Advocate with Integrity. Lawmakers have come to trust Tim and rely on his know ledge of the issues and his wellinformed advocacy on a variety of issues.”
If you listen to the voices who claim to speak with authority about our Founding Fathers you will hear them say “they were all atheists, agnostics or deists” and leave that out there as if it were matter of fact. Really? Join us for a closer look at some of the Founding Fathers in the Famous John Trumbull Painting that hangs in the Rotunda of the Capitol in DC. It might surprise you to hear “the rest of the story.”

Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, wo and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing THEIR HEARING AIDS?

by healthcare providers with
aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/ music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic, patient-centered

Here the doctors could don 40 pounds of fire gear, including masks and oxygen tanks, and participate in searchand-rescue exercises that mimic what firefighters do every day. Firefighter/paramedic Nick Oberst demonstrated how emergency personnel sometimes must rescue themselves in buildings with collapsed floors, lowering himself through
a hole in the floor, then hoisting himself using a webbed “ladder.” Other exercises included finding victims inside the building while blindfolded and searching while following a fire hose through obstacles. Bringing together two groups of lifesavers helps both appreciate the skills and dedication of the other - sort of a marriage made in heaven. “This is a good hands-on experience both for the residents and for our personnel,” said Delta Township fire chief John Clark.
NEWS IN BRIEF Junior forest rangers sought EATON CO. - Eaton County Parks is sponsoring a National Forest Service Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) program at Lincoln Brick Park, just north of Grand Ledge, Aug. 9-11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The JFR program features our rich natural resources and its role within that environment through a series of fun filled activities including using a compass, campfire safety, and wildlife observation. The Junior Forest Ranger program aims to interest children in enjoying the outdoors and to help develop tomorrow’s leaders. The program requires children to complete the activities in the JFR Adventure Guide, “Become a Junior Forest Ranger.” The booklet provides a variety of fun activities that any child can do. It’s also a great way to team up with other children on activities. Upon completion of the three day JFR program, participants will be awarded an official Junior Forest Ranger certificate, patch, pin, and membership card to continue their involvement in conservation and responsible land management.
