resident Mike Egan and his trusty van stuffed with tools and bike parts is a familiar sight in East Lansing. Egan, who lives in the house on St. Joe near Marketplace with the old bike in the yard, its basket filled with summer flowers, has been part of the Sharea-Ride program in East Lansing for the last 15 years. Located in two big red trailers behind the fire station on Abbot Road, Share-a-Bike uses volunteers like Egan to refurbish

donated bikes and give them away to people who really need them. He figures he and fellow volunteers have provided reliable bike transportation for more than 600 people over the last two years., between 20 and 40 on a summer weekend. One of them is Connie Zheng, a recent MSU grad who was getting a bike July 9 for her son Andy, 13, and couldn’t say enough good things about Egan. “Fixing bikes is second nature to Mike and he’s very patient,” said Zheng, who rides a Share-aBike bicycle herself. “This (pro-

Other volunteers sometimes come over to see if he has a tool they can borrow - and usually he does. “I’ve always been a fledgling mechanic and involved in several bike clubs around town,” said Egan, who works for Hasselbring-Clark. He’s a good listener, too, paying attention to what a “customer” needs and looking through the program’s inventory to find it. On July 9, for instance, Egan took Liz Owczarzak, who has some back issues, through the bikes hanging in one of the red trailers until they found the right one, which he then adjusted to make sure it fit her comfortably.

Egan has been repairing bikes for the Share-a-Bike program for 15 years. “This (program) really saved our lives,” said Connie Zheng, who received two bikes repaired by Egan July 9, one for herself and one for her son, Andy, 13. “Fixing bikes is second nature for Mike.” MARY JO WHITE/LCN A spontaneous warm handshake was her thank you to Egan. “This bike will be great for riding downtown,” said Owczarzak, an LCC student in the geographical information system program. “It will also be helpful in getting to doctors’ appointments.” East Lansing resident and

Each person who wants a bike must bring a letter from a human services agency, a religious organization or an employer that vouches for their need. the bikes they need and ride away smiling. Some are very persistent. Cliff Johnson, 66, for instance, rode off on a very nice Schwinn on July 9. His previous Share-a-Bike bicycle had been stolen. All bikes are licensed with the East Lansing Police Department and their owners offered a brand-new helmet. On July 9 7-year-old Zach Rinehart almost got a red bike in his size that needed quite a bit of work. Searching through the rows of bikes, though, he came upon a shiny silver number that seemed made for him. He got a cool blue helmet, too, and hopefully a safety lesson for the rest of his bike-riding day

Grand Ledge Dorothy Forgrave, beloved matriarch, passed away peacefuly Sunday morning, Ju ly 17, 2011. Born on August 3, 1916, Dorothy Eleanor was the youngest of the Teel sisters of Lansing. Dorothy’s stories of growing up revealed a love for family and a vivacity that, rooted then, never withered over her 94 years. Dorothy married William in 1939, who predeceased her in 1991. Bill and Dottie were married for over fifty years and were dedicated parishioners of Central United Methodist Church. Their children-Sharron (Lloyd Lerew), Holly (Roger LaPratt), Pam Watrous, Joan Forgrave, and Robert (Anne) Forgrave-have been blessed with a mother of exceptional wit, wisdom, warmth and steadfast faith. She was a strong advocate of the "power of positive thinking" and of community volunteerism both of which she passed onto her progeny. Dorothy was a dedicated volunteer with several organizations including Sparrow Hospital, where she helped found the Junior Division. Antrim county (Torch Lake) became the family’s summer home for over fifty years. Dottie’s last weeks were spent on the cottage porch surrounded by her family. She spent her summers sailing and playing tennis into her 80s, then contented herself with watching her 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Dottie could be found on the porch, playing games with family and friends. Her greatgrandchildren knew who to count on for Oreos before breakfast, and there was never a doubt-if the question was ice cream-as to Dottie’s answer. A farewell gathering was held at Central United Methodist Church in Lansing on Friday, July 22, 2011. Donations to Central United Methodist Church or Hospice Advantage of Eaton County are welcome. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Notice of Public Hearing and Opportunity to Review Proposed Apportionments for Drain Assessment The Eaton County Drain Commissioner’s Office has scheduled Hearings to accept comments concerning proposed apportionment rolls and pending assessments in the following drainage districts in Delta Township. The purpose of the hearings is to establish percents of benefits for parcels contributing stormwater runoff to the respective county drains. Saratoga Drain (Saratoga Farms and adjacent metes and bounds parcels in Section 1) Old River Trail Drain (Delta Mills #1 and #3 subdivisions in Section 3) Cambridge and Branches Drain (Cambridge Manor subdivision in Section 2) Walmar Drain (Walmar subdivision in Section 2) Wellington Fields Drain (Wellington Fields subdivision in Section 17) Individual notices have been mailed to all affected properties by first class mail, and Delta Township and the Eaton County Road Commission by certified mail consistent with Public Act 40, 1956, as amended. There will be no assessment levied in the Cambridge and Branches or Walmar Drainage Districts in 2011. The intent of those hearings is to simply establish a mechanism to comply with requirements of Eaton County’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Program permit. Assessments will be levied to recover maintenance and other expenses in the Saratoga, Old River Trail and Wellington Fields Drainage Districts. Assessments will be levied and collected with 2011 property taxes to satisfy outstanding debt consistent with Section 196 of the Michigan Drain Code. The apportionment rolls, including municipalities, will be available for inspection at the Drain Commissioner’s Office in the Eaton County Courthouse, 1045 Independence Boulevard, Charlotte, Michigan between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Interest parties may also call (517) 543-3870 for information during those hours. An appointment to physically review a roll is not required. Any individual requiring assistance for visual, hearing or other disability should contact the Drain Commissioner’s Office at 543-3809 (voice), or the Michigan Relay Center at 1-800-649-3777 (TTD), at least seven (7) day prior to the scheduled hearing with specific requirements for the necessary accommodations.
