Delta Twp. welcomes new businesses Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. - A couple of very welcome new businesses are breaking ground in Delta. The building on West Saginaw next to Taco Bell that went through incarnations as Friendly’s, Pizza Hut and a Chinese restaurant has been torn down. Its replacement will house O’Reilly Auto Parts, currently operating in rented space just east of Waverly Road. This time O’Reilly Auto Parts will own its building, which will meet all the township zoning requirements and have the same set back as Taco Bell, according to township planner Jeff Huard.

Amy’s stepfather, Tom Rodriguez, who lives on Arlington Drive with his wife, Grace, was at the board meeting to see Lyman welcomed into the Waverly community. Grace couldn’t make the meeting, though, because she was caring for the three grandchildren. In other school board news, superintendent Debra Jones announced that the district will participate in the Amber Alert program, using the Waverly High School sign. Jones also reported that the district will receive a

$43,000 Clean Cities grant through the Clear the Air for School Kids program. The money will go toward the purchase of two new “green” busses for the district that incorporate emission reduction technology, according to transportation director Rhonda Waverly Elmwood Elementary School’s new principal, Timothy Lyman (center), after the school board meeting July 26 with his wife, Amy, a 1991 Waverly grad, and her step-father, Tom Rodriguez. To celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary, Library Trustee Carol Walker and her husband Dale requested that, in lieu of gifts, donations be made to the Delta Township District Library for the children’s picture books section. The generosity of Carol and Dale’s friends and family resulted in a nearly $1,500 infusion of new books for the collection. from this fall’s budget, it’s unclear whether certain extra-curricular clubs will continue to exist in the Waverly School District. The $56,400 eliminated would have covered the increase in salaries, retirement and FICA for the extra duties taken on by employees. “Many extra-curricular clubs have volunteers running them,” assistant superintendent Jacklin Blodgett wrote in an e-mail, citing the bowling club and Interact as two examples. “These groups (affected by the cuts) can have staff or parent volunteers organize or run them.” At the elementary level, those who will be affected are the advisors for language arts, math, science, social studies and the student council. Other groups affected will be the yearbook staff and student council at East; the yearbook, student council and junior National Honor Society at the middle school and, at the high school, the National Honor and Spanish National Honor Societies, the student senate and the junior and senior class advisors.

BABY TALK – PART II I would like to address some of the taboos and misunderstandings often associated with moms being pregnant. One of the biggest is this whole issue of weight gain. Moms all over the world secretly look in the mirror and cringe at the sight of the loss of their waist, their “fat” stomach, enlarged breasts, swollen feet, and the fact that they often carry drips of their lunch on their tee-shirt. Let me be emphatic here: You are not FAT, you are PREGNANT!! Huge difference! Swelling is actually a sign of a healthy pregnancy, not something that should be treated. Retention of fluids is healthy for mom and baby. It is also temporary. Just part of being pregnant! A generation ago, weight gain was limited to 8-10 lbs. It was soon discovered that moms and babies were undernourished so the magic number became 24. This is no longer the case. Latest research indicates that weight gain of 35 lbs or more on a high protein diet is healthy as long as it is well balanced, does not contain chemicals or preservatives and is limited in refined sugars. The other issue revolves around salt. Moms are often told to restrict their salt intake. You should realize that Sodium (a part of salt) is very important in the production of extra blood volume. Very important for a growing baby and a lack can be disastrous. I recommend that you use salt “to taste” and no more. This is an easy way to listen to what your body is telling you. There are other no-no’s that you should be aware of when you’re pregnant. One is Alcohol. It causes problems with the development of your baby’s nervous system. Caffeine is another. It has been linked to birth defects. This can be found in coffee, cola, black and green teas and chocolate (Boo). As well, try to limit your preservative intake including aspartame (refer to my earlier issue of Kids-First); your baby will thank you later. Be very cautious using any type of drugs or medications. All have adverse effects on your baby. I should be emphatic here - all drugs cross the placental barrier and affect your baby. There is no such thing as a “safe drug.” One of the most common nuisances of pregnancy is the “morning sickness” thing. Most of this is caused by a lack of blood sugar - hypoglycaemia. After-all, you have not eaten since 7-8:00 pm the night before and your developing baby is literally feeding all night while you are asleep. Your blood sugar level is dangerously low and you feel sick. I ask my patients to have an energy bar or a snack high in protein, fructose and complex carbs late in the evening, which will level out their blood sugar until breakfast. There are a number of things you can do to make your pregnancy the enjoyable experience it was meant to be. The first is having a chiropractic check-up to make sure your nervous system is functioning normally so that you have a good pregnancy and much easier labor and delivery. This has little to do with back pain but is crucial for optimal health. I feel this is a must in having a healthy pregnancy. The use of herbs such as red raspberry leaves makes for a good uterine tonic and helps prevent miscarriage, anaemia and aids in fighting infection. Peppermint tea will help with digestion and nausea. So will ginger root. Other herbs such as Echinacea and camomile are very relaxing and should be taken as a hot tea. All these are available from your health food store.

THE PLAN OF CHOICE FOR STATE OF MICHIGAN EMPLOYEES

Taking care of the people who take care of Michigan.

Millie and Bill Blanchard of Lansing take a break on the part of the East West Connector that leads to the Lansing Mall. The couple like to use the new trail after they go to an exercise program at the mall three mornings a week and commented on how well Delta Township maintains its parks. Millie especially likes the paving. “This chair is not an ATV,” she said. “If it (the path) wasn’t paved, I couldn’t do it.” MARY JO WHITE / LCN

Warrior harriers expect business as usual Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. -- Despite the doubt and gloom surrounding the announcement of Waverly’s school board ending funding for some of its varsity sports, one of those sports, cross country, is hitting the ground running in its first self-funded season. Robert Lurie, Waverly’s longtime boys’ and girls head coach, said that fundraising efforts have gone extremely well. “There are some very generous people out in the community,” Lurie said. “We got a $1,000 contribution from the Michigan Running Foundation, that’s from Chuck Block, the Lansing Community College coach, and that was very generous.” That generosity also comes from within the Warrior cross country family. “We’ve heard from a lot of our alumni, who have said, ‘Please, where do I send money?’ After this month, we’ll have a better idea of where we stand

there,” Lurie said. In addition, the team will raise another $1,000 for helping to clean up Spartan Stadium after a Michigan State home football game this fall, among other revenue-generating activities. Lurie said that his goal is to make the transition from funded varsity sport to going it on their own as seamless as possible. “The most important thing is, we’re committed to the kids having the same experience as all previous cross country runners have had,” he said. “We’re going to have the same schedule, people will earn varsity letters, they’ll run in the state meet if they’re good enough. All of those things will remain exactly the same.” So has the number of runners participating. While it’s difficult to determine if the transition from school-sponsored activity to “club” status has caused any prospective athletes to abandon their sports, since practices for them haven’t begun yet, Lurie said that, based on his summer pro-

gram, he thinks that he will see as big a turnout as ever. “Probably about 30-40, that’s about what we’ve been running in the past,” he said. “I expect the numbers to not go down.” Practice starts on Aug.10 at 5 p.m. at Grand Woods Park, with any Waverly student interested in running cross country encouraged to attend. Lurie said that those who do try out will gain a lot by participating. “We don’t cut anybody,

everyone gets to participate,” he said. “We have a progressive training program, so if you’re just starting out, we have a program for that, and for other kids with different levels of experience. “The biggest benefit is representing Waverly, being part of a team, having that experience. We’re a very close, tightknit group of kids, and always have been.” Interested runners can contact Lurie at lurie.robert@gmail.com.
