DELTA TWP. - The Waverly Community Schools board unanimously selected Angela Witwer to complete the term of Fornda Brewer-Williams, who resigned July 31. Witwer, who will serve until December 31, is the owner and chief operating officer of Edge Partnerships, a strategic planning and public relations firm. Previously she worked as Sparrow Hospital’s community relations manager for 12 years. Witwer

DELTA TWP. - News of a popular Waverly administrator being placed on administrative leave drew a crowd of supporters to the school board meeting Monday, Aug. 8. The meeting had to be moved to the middle school Little Theatre to accommodate supporters of high school principal Vince Perkins, recently placed on administrative leave for undisclosed reasons. There had not been an official announcement of the leave but news of it apparently spread among supporters via Facebook. Britt Slocum, board vice secretary/treasurer, said Thursday that he was concerned about “speculation” and “rumor mongering” on social network sites. “There has been no inappropriate student contact, no misuse of funds and no test score cheating,” Slocum said of the charges against Perkins. Waverly superintendent Debra Jones said after the meeting that confidentiality precludes her commenting on Perkins’ situation. “It would be inappropri-

The issue was not on the

meeting agenda but supporters spoke to the board during two public comment periods. Board rules prohibit board members from responding to issues brought up during public comment periods. Among those supporting Perkins at the meeting was Vickie Cameron, who retired in June after 27 years with the Waverly district. She said Perkins was

the best of the seven principals with whom she has worked. “He brought the staff together in a cohesive unit,” Cameron said, characterizing him as a “devoted leader” who spent many extra hours at school. “I have never felt such helplessness and despair,” said LuAnn Stuible, a vetSee SUPPORT, Page 3

Perkins was transferred from the middle school to the high school because the state requires a change in leadership as part of a “least proficient” school’s improvement plan. He was replaced by current middle school principal Mike Moreno. Several e-mails were read from Waverly graduates in support of Perkins and some

Witwer, who has a nursing degree from Butterworth School of Nursing in Grand Rapids, serves on several local boards including the YMCA, Ingham Regional Medical Center and the Evange-

lization Committee at St. Gerard’s Parish. Asked during her interview what she hoped to accomplish, she said her skills would help Waverly have a “cohesive brand” that sends a unified message to the community. The only other candidate to apply for the seat was attorney Linda Coe, whose two sons currently attend Waverly schools.

Two four-year board slots will open up next year, as well as the remaining two years of the term of Mike Knaggs, who resigned for personal reasons and was replaced by Edith Suttles. Candidates must live in and be eligible to vote in the school district. The filing deadline for the Nov. 8 general election is Aug. 16 at 4 p.m.

current students spoke. Waverly parent Kris Richards said one of her daughters would not have graduated without the help of Perkins. Perkins was not at the meeting and attempts to reach him have not yet been successful. Board vice president Calvin Jones said Wednesday that he thought the process dealing with Perkins’ administrative leave would move quickly, especially since the school year starts soon. “I really can’t comment about the issue, (though), because I don’t want to jeopardize the process,” he said. In other school news, Debra Jones reported that teacher Kristina Boomer has agreed to continue as the National Honor Society advisor despite the loss of her stipend.

Historical Society on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7p.m. as they visit Sunfield to tour the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Hall. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will host the group and give an overview of why the hall is important to Michigan Civil War history. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War are the preservers of the memory of the GAR and their ancestors that fought in the Civil War. The SUVCW participates in Civil War seminars and education programs to promote awareness of Civil War history and military attire. The local organization of the SUVCW in Michigan’s Ingham and Eaton Counties is the Lansing/Sunfield Curtenius Guard Camp No. 17, which was chartered in 1983. It is the only GAR hall in Michigan that has remained in continuous service by the GAR. In 1866, Union Veterans of the Civil

War organized into the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and became a social and political force in the United States. Membership in the veterans’ organization was restricted to individuals who had served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War, thereby limiting the life span of the GAR. The GAR existed until 1956. For more information on the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War visit their web site at www.suvcw.org. The program is part of the 150th celebration of the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Hall us located at 115 Main St., Sunfield, (west of Lansing). The tour is open to the public and is offered free of charge. THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This LJ-0100110471

allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic,

DELTA TWP. -- Waverly’s

football program is going into its 2011 season with something that it has not for a while: momentum. The Warriors ended their 2010 campaign with a satisfying 27-13 win at Everett, and will face the Vikings again in their season opener on Aug. 26. Waverly will look to build on their muchimproved 2010 season, in which they won three games, one fewer than in the previous three years combined. Warrior head coach Chris Huff said that his team finished the year strong. “We ended the season winning two of our last three, and the third game we only lost by one point,” Huff said. “We definitely had some opportunities that

we didn’t take advantage of last year, and this year we’re looking to capitalize on them.” Huff said that his team had a successful season slip from their grasp last year. The Warriors will also play in a new league setup in 2011, moving to the CAAC Gold division along with Mason and Jackson Northwest, to join Charlotte and Eaton Rapids. Waverly will have just four league games this season, but could be favored in three of them. Mason is the prohibitive favorite, bringing back a senior-laden team that has posted a combined record of 26-6 over the past three seasons. But before facing the Bulldogs, Waverly will have played Eaton Rapids (0-9 in 2010), Charlotte (2-7) and Northwest (1-8). As a result, the Warriors could very well travel to Mason on Oct. 7 to play

BABY TALK

PART III A pediatric chiropractor will also perform regular checks throughout your pregnancy. This consists of an external examination that includes palpation (feeling) of the uterus and pelvis. This examination will help determine the presence of In-Utero Constraint. This is very important!In-Utero constraint occurs usually in the last trimester of pregnancy when “you are all baby”. In other words, the baby has reached a size where movement is very restricted and it can get ”stuck” in an awkward position in the uterus. This can also happen if mom’s pelvis is not moving properly.

The situation can not only create stress on the spine and nervous system but can lead to the creation of scoliosis (spinal curvatures), as well as other spinal abnormalities. All in all, a situation best avoided. Along with preventing In-Utero constraint, chiropractic has also been very effective in the turning of breech presentations. So, I invite you to have yourself checked. Chiropractic is very safe and effective. It is also

make a run for the playoffs.” Waverly was achingly close to a playoff season last year, losing to Okemos by two points, Holly by one,

and letting a fourth-quarter lead slip away against St. Johns. “If we’d played up to our abilities and played with some confidence, we’d have been 6-3 and in the playoffs,” Huff said. The Warriors will have a somewhat challenging nonconference schedule, after their first game at Everett.

Defending CAAC Blue champion Grand Ledge will renew their old CAC rivalry in Waverly’s home opener on Sept. 1, and the rest of the Warriors’ non-league opponents, Highland Park, Holly and Fowlerville, all finished with winning records in 2010.

But the schedule is still better than it has been for the Warriors in recent seasons. “Every year that I’ve been at Waverly, we’ve played five playoff teams,” Huff said. “It’s hard to build confidence in the program when every week you’re going up against the best

well.” Some of the Warriors’ key contributors will be senior middle linebacker Payne Peruchietti, junior running back Alante Sims and senior quarterback Jordan Martin. Peruchietti has been a workhorse in his three years on the varsity, and will be the lynch pin of a tough defense. Sims was a revelation as a sophomore, and brings big-play capability to every down.

Martin has moved around the field on both sides of the ball, and will bring that experience and athleticism to the quarterback position. Huff said that a winning football season would be especially important to the Warriors this season. “There has been a lot of negativity surrounding Waverly lately,” he said. “But, if you come out here and watch us play football, you’ll see nothing but positive.”

DELTA TWP. -- Waverly’s boys tennis program may be on life support, but it is not dead. Recent Warrior graduate Mike Sorrell and Haslett alumnus Richard Hall have stepped in as volunteer co-head coaches to keep the team alive. Hall said that two players showed up for the first day of practice on Wednesday, well short of the 10 players required to field a team. “One of the parents told me that they just assumed that there wouldn’t be a tennis program at Waverly this year,” Hall said. “I’m confident that there are a lot of kids out there who want to play tennis, they just don’t know that it’s available.” The only cost to play will be the $50 Waverly participation fee, which Hall said is enough to run the program. “Since Mike and I are volunteers, the only expense is tennis balls,” he said. Those who have never played tennis before will be not just tolerated, but encouraged to join the team. “I would love to see people who never played tennis before come out,” Hall said. “I want to show people who have never picked up a racket how much fun this sport can be from the first time they walk

onto a court.” Sorrell, who was the Warriors’ top singles player last year, said that he did not want Waverly’s recent decision to withdraw funding to be a death sentence for the program. “I knew that tennis was going to be abandoned, for the most part,” Sorrell said. “I just wanted to do whatever I could do to get the program back on.” Hall just wants to introduce people to the sport that he loves. “It’s about the only high-school sport that you can take with you for the rest of your life,” he said. “You can play tennis into your 90’s. There aren’t many guys in nursing homes going, ‘Hey, let’s go play some tackle football.’” Hall said that he needs a minimum of 10 players on the roster by Tuesday, Aug. 16 in order to field a team, and keep the program alive, this season. All interested players should come to a practice, weekdays at 2 p.m. at the Waverly Tennis Courts, or call Hall at 490-2152 or Sorell at 517-388-3214.
