Six vie for three Micro brewery on tap for Delta ed board seats Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com

By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. - Six candidates have filed to run for three seats on the Waverly Community Schools board, two for a partial term and four for two four-year terms. Margie J. Aimery and David Percival will compete to fill the last two years of the term of Mike Knaggs, who resigned for personal reasons. Edith Suttles has been serving in Knaggs’ place, having been chosen by the board last January to do so until the next general election. The candidates for the two full terms are John Broughton, Cindy Peruchietti, Melissa Sherry and Angela Witwer. Witwer recently joined the board to serve the last few months of the term of Fonda Brewer-Williams, who resigned July 31 for personal reasons. Aimery, 51, an executive staff assistant at MSU’s Office of Planning and Budget, previously ran

DELTA TWP. - The idea of

a satellite recycling center at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Snow Road met some stiff opposition at the Delta Township board meeting Aug. 15. Township parks and recreation director Dick Benkert floated the idea as part of his report on the recycling center on Millett Hwy., which is very well used by local residents, drawing close to 500 vehicles on an average Saturday.

Micro Continued from Page 1

will have to see to significant plumbing and electrical work in the main building and obtain a micro brewery license from the state. Plans also call for a new HVAC system, converting the single bathroom into two and redesigning the kitchen. Eventually the

“We need to figure out ways to make it easier for people to recycle,” Benkert said. “This would be one.” He said a satellite site would be inexpensive to set up and maintain, though he gave no specific figures. The township already owns the property, the site of a former church now used for firefighter training. Board members Barb Poma and Jan Cunningham said they were concerned that residents would drop off trash, including big items like mattresses, because the site would not

be staffed. They also questioned its proximity to Waverly High School across the street, as well as to adjoining residential neighborhoods. Benkert said the satellite site, which would only be open during the day, would be fenced and would make use of the security cameras already there because of the township’s water tank next door. He also noted that the recycling area would be located in the paved southeast corner of the property and not readily visible from the street.

Delta clerk Janice Vedder said she supported the idea because a satellite site would make it easier for seniors in the nearby neighborhoods to recycle at times convenient to them. The Millett Hwy. center is open Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays, but only during certain hours. Vedder also said she doesn’t anticipate people dropping off trash because they don’t do it now on Millett Hwy. If such a thing happened regularly, the township could decide to close the satellite site.

Buonodonos want to repair the roof of the garage so that the structure can be used for storage. Micro breweries produce less than 30,000 barrels a year. The couple say they plan to produce about 300 barrels for take home and on site consumption. Marcy Ave. residents Jeana and Clifford Dennis were at the board meeting to welcome the Buonodonos to their neighborhood. The Dennises said they were happy to see a new business

on their corner. In other business news, the township board also approved two new special land use permits. One is for a new Soapy Joe’s Car Wash at 6008 W. Saginaw next to the former Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant. The other is for Elite Towing and Recovery, a commercial garage that includes towing, truck leasing and maintenance, at 4214 W. Mt. Hope at Lansing Road.

very talented squad. “It’s going absolutely wonderfully,” Cvrljevic said. “We have a good group of girls returning from last year, both at the varsity and JV level, and even our incoming freshmen are really dedicated and ready to compete.” Cvrljevic replaces previous head coach Megan

Helsen, who was laid off of her Waverly teaching position after the last school year. The Warriors will play in a new league this year, moving along with Mason, Jackson Northwest and Jackson Lumen Christi into the CAAC Gold, which will also include Charlotte and Eaton Rapids.

With the talent coming back, Waverly should be in the mix for the league title. Cvrljevic said that her players certainly think so. “I think these girls know how to play, and are going to do really well this year,” she said. “The girls are talking about winning every, single game. They

are ready to just win and win and win.” The team will hit the ground running, starting the season with a league match at Eaton Rapids two days after school starts, on Wednesday, Sept. 7. “The girls are ready to get back into it and ready to start playing,” Cvrljevic said.

Warrior football coach takes new job as AD Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. – Waverly High School has a new top Warrior. Head football coach Chris Huff has resigned his coaching duties after being named the school’s new athletic director. Huff will also assume the duties of a part-time dean of students for the school. “I feel like sort of utility man,” Huff said. “I’ll perform some functions in the athletic office and some functions in the main office.” Longtime Warrior assistant and junior-varsity coach Mike Wallace will take over the football program as interim head coach

for this season, with the search for a permanent replacement to take place after the season. “I feel confident that I can make this change and Chris Huff the kids won’t miss a beat,” Huff said. Wallace, a Warrior alumnus, has been a part of the football program in various positions since his senior year at Waverly in 1997, including seven years as the head junior varsity coach, in which his teams have never posted a losing record. “This has been a dream of mine for some time,” Wallace said. “I am a War-

rior, from kindergarten on up.” This is the second straight time that Waverly has lost a football coach to an athletic director’s position. Huff was hired in 2006 to replace Devin Pringle, who left the Warriors to become athletic director and head football coach at Carson City-Crystal. Huff, who has also been a social studies teacher at the high school, said that he wants to reverse some of the negativity surrounding Waverly recently, especially in the athletic department. “I’m really involved in changing the atmosphere around,” Huff said. “With the budget cuts, we have See AD, Page 14
