Vedder achievements many during long civic career Mary Jo White

DELTA TWP. - “Fascinating” wouldn’t be how most of us would describe the nuts and bolts of running an election. Nor would we think of election day as a big happy party with 24,000 invited guests who just happen to be local voters. But that’s exactly now longtime Delta Township clerk Janice Vedder thinks. Vedder is a woman who can tell you the exact location of every electrical outlet in every church that’s served as a local polling place, someone who grows animated when she describes arcane details of election law. She’s creative, too, having been inspired to put bar codes on ballots when she considered how a supermarket scanner can immediately register whether a box contains Wheaties or Cheerios and the price of each. That bar code idea garnered Vedder a Grassroots Government Leadership Award from the National Association of Towns and Townships in 1992. “It used to take one person six weeks at 40 hours a week to find and date stamp every voter’s master card,” Vedder said recently. “Today we have all of the information immediately.” Delta Township supervisor Ken Fletcher, who took office in 2008, says he’s found Vedder’s historical knowledge “invaluable.” He’s also very proud of the township’s elections record. “She (Vedder) has developed one of the best run election systems anywhere,” Fletcher said. “You never hear of election prob-

lems in Delta.” The end of this month will be cold-turkey time for Vedder, who will retire and move to join her husband, Jeffrey Whipple, in Charlevoix. Although willing to help the new Delta clerk make the transition, particularly with refresher classes for election workers, she really has her eye on a new future up north. Raised in a small house on Canal Road, Vedder went to school in Delta Mills and says she thinks of the township “as an extension of my backyard, my family.” Eaton County commissioner John Boles, who has known Vedder for many years, 10 of them when they served together on the township board, says it’s her dedication to Delta that has most impressed him.

Family ties “This is her home, with a very rich, colorful history,” Boles said. “Her family were pioneers and she takes a great deal of pride in Delta and has been diligent in seeing it developed in a systematic way.” Vedder’s parents, Robert and Betty Jones, raised Vedder and her three sisters, including twin Janine, to be civic minded. Betty, now 90-years-old, led by example, too. She was the first woman to serve on the Delta board and on the Eaton County Board of Trustees. Boles says that Vedder has been “very modest” about her achievements, ticking off the recycling center, Greener Delta, the new passport program and and Delta’s recently getting its own identifying address through the 911 system as due, at least in

MARY JO WHITE | LCN part, to Vedder’s hard work. Elected clerk in 1988 after stints on the planning and zoning boards, Vedder’s first innovation happened when she discovered that processing absentee voter ballots was very “labor intensive.” So she started a permanent AV list with 300 names that has grown to 5,500 voters today. Soon she was talking to then Secretary of State Richard Austin about how a card reader might eventually identify voters by a magnetic strip on their driver’s licenses. By 1993, she learned it was possible to put 21,000 voters on a PalmPilot, but realized the device was too small to be useful. Today every polling place has

an electronic poll book that gathers all the day’s data on a card that takes two seconds to download into the main computer in the clerk’s office.

Election inovations “Everything’s done electronically,” Vedder said, adding that she has found it exciting to have been a part of the process that streamlined elections over the last 20 years. Ask Vedder what she’s most proud of, though, and she mentions not elections but sidewalks, her interest first piqued when her son Fritz, then about 13, landed on the hood of a car after being hit by a driver making a left turn onto Saginaw.

Although he wasn’t hurt, Vedder said she realized then how much people need safe ways to travel on foot or on a bike. “Sidewalks and paths became the things I’ve worked on the longest,” she said. Developers over the years have often felt sidewalks not necessary, particularly on narrow private roads, but the township persisted, requiring them on at least one side of new streets and allocating money each year to construct them in older neighborhoods. A grant to put sidewalks on both sides of Saginaw was a landmark achievement, followed by See VEDDER, Page 6

DELTA TWP. - If your idea of local travel is hopping on your bike or if you think Delta’s best asset is its parks system, make room on your calendar for two upcoming meetings. Township officials want to hear what you think about the non-motorized transportation plan on Tuesday, Sept. 27. They will also welcome input on our parks and rec-

reation plan on Thursday, Oct. 6. Both meetings will start at 7 p.m. in the township administration building, 7710 W. Saginaw. Public input is more important than ever because of the tough economy, according to Parks and Rec director Richard Benkert. the East-West Connector from Sharp Park to Creyts and the shared used paths on both sides of Creyts from Saginaw to Delta Mills Park. Most recently, Vedder is proud of the path from Creyts to Canal that includes a boardwalk over Carrier Creek. Soon bikers and walkers will be able to travel from the library to Horrocks without accessing any main roads. “I never in my wildest dreams thought we’d get that path to Canal,” Vedder said. She says that often residents, worried about crime or loss of privacy, oppose

paths and sidewalks, only to say how much they enjoy them when they’re finally in place. Vedder sees her other major contribution the new Delta Township District Library. In 1998 a decision had to be made - should the township become part of the Capital Area District Library or strike out on its own? Vedder felt the Delta money that would go to CADL (about $400,000 a year, $60,000 of it for acquisitions) would be better spent on a local library. The township board agreed and Vedder, along with other officials, turned one of the first shovels full of soil at the 2007 groundbreaking ceremony for the new mission-style building, a place that has

proved immensely popular with the public. “Janice clearly was the moving force behind the creation of the Delta Township District Library,” said longtime library board chairman Michael Moore. Vedder says she will be happy to stop her long weekend commutes and has already offered to help the Charlevoix County clerk. She wants to work with Habitat for Humanity, too. Delta will still welcome Vedder back frequently, though, because her family, including Betty Jones, as well as Vedder’s sons, their wives and two grandchildren live here. She hopes to keep active with the historical society, too, as members work to showcase the Grange building in a new location.

DELTA TWP. - Delta Township’s own Mina Greco Hall won the People’s Choice blue ribbon from last summer’s City Streets exhibit in which the public could vote for their favorite piece among the works of 80 Michigan artists on display in downtown Lansing. Greco Hall’s entry, an oil painting titled “Enigma,” garnered many more votes than any other work. Born in Italy, Greco Hall has been a professional artist just about all her life. She has had a distinguished career in various media, arriving in Lansing in 1963, where she has been involved in the Lansing Art Gallery, the Dancing Crane Gallery and MSU’s Kresge

football improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in CAAC Gold play with a 36-21 win over Charlotte on Sept. 16. Quarterback Jordan Martin threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Warriors to their first twogame winning streak since 2007. Waverly head coach Mike Wallace said that Martin is the lynch pin for his offense. “Having him back there is huge for us,” Wallace said. “His leadership in the huddle, his command of the field is second to none. He’s definitely our captain and our leader on offense. We go as he goes.” Alante Sims led the Waverly ground attack, gaining 62 yards on four carries, and also caught

five passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in the contest. Martin and Sims combined for a big play to open the scoring, on a 78-yard TD strike in the first quarter. Charlotte responded with a 3-yard TD run to tie the score at 7-7, but Waverly took the lead again on Martin’s second TD pass of the game, seven yards to Derrick Hartwell that made the score 14-7. Aundreyan Roberts stretched the lead when he scooped up a Charlotte fumble and took it to the house from 13 yards out, to give the Warriors a 21-7 lead going into the second quarter. Martin found Aaron Mays on his third TD pass of the game, from 25 yards out, to make the score 28-7 early in the second quarter, but Charlotte pulled one back before the break, on a

1-yard quarterback sneak that made the score 27-14 at the half. Martin took in a 1-yard sneak of his own in the third quarter to make the score 33-14, and Jacob Miller added a 20-yard field goal in the fourth, before Charlotte scored on a 38-yard run late in the contest that served only to make the final score 36-21. “We played very well,” Wallace said. “I knew that we weren’t going to be able to shut them out, but I was very pleased with how we didn’t give up a big play. Our defense played very well.” Waverly will hit the road this week to face Jackson Northwest in a key CAAC Gold matchup on Friday, Sept. 30, but Wallace said that his team has their sights on a potential league championship game against Mason on Oct. 7.

Vaccination; for Health or Profit? Part I It seems like everywhere I go the issue of vaccination is currently discussed. Over the next few weeks, I will be writing a series of articles on the vaccine controversy in my Kids-First column. My articles are well researched, factual, and you are welcome to call our office for additional information. Vaccination is a very contentious issue. Nothing in science is seen with more acceptance. As a chiropractor who deals mainly with children, and as a father of five wonderful, unsubluxated,

proven. Yet it is a theory that many hold very dear to their hearts. Most of this hype is the direct result of massive marketing campaigns by the pharmaceutical and medical industry. As a matter of fact, any research being done on vaccines is funded by the drug industry and there is virtually no research done on vaccine hazards. Any studies that have been done, do not extend for more than a two-week period. Why? There are billions of dollars at stake. What a shock! As a mater of fact, there is no system in Canada for reporting vaccine damage and for compensating children who have been damaged by vaccination. In the U.S., any vaccine damage and adverse events are reported to VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) which then handles such problems. However, any damage is often conveniently dismissed as coincidental, and parents of vaccine damaged children are made to feel guilty as though it is their fault their child “reacted badly” to a vaccine and is now brain damaged. Too bad! I think most parents in our community would find something is very wrong with this. I agree. See you in two weeks for Part II

unvaccinated, healthy kids, I have great concern with this subject. Why am I doing this? My ethics. The information released to parents by health departments is very one sided - there is yet another side that most parents do not hear but should, before they decide to vaccinate their children. Vaccination has been likened to a medical “sacrament” by the late Dr. Robert Mendelson, an outspoken North American pediatrician who has labelled himself as a “medical heretic.” Vaccination: the word itself conjures happy, smiling children lining up to receive their “shot” to keep them ”safe and healthy.” Millions of parents blindly subject their children to this ritual for it apparently bestows “protection” from bugs “out there.” More and more parents however, along with the scientific and medical community, are beginning to question not only the validity of this protection, but also its efficacy and its risks. If you are one who subscribes to the scientific prove-itto-me-first, random, double-blind, scientific model, you are in for quite a shock! The theory of vaccination, and it is only a theory, has never been thoroughly tested and

Waverly soccer beats Lumen, Northwest Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. -- Waverly improved to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in CAAC Gold boys’ soccer play with a sweep of the two Jackson schools by the identical score, 4-1. The Warriors traveled to Jackson to beat Northwest by that score on Sept. 19, and defeated Lumen Christi at home on Sept. 21. While the game at Northwest was in some doubt, at least for a while, with Waverly holding a 2-1 lead late in the first half before salting it away, Lumen never really threatened the Warriors in the contest. Not that they didn’t try, especially early. Lumen kept Waverly on the back foot for the first 10-15 minutes of the contest, reducing Waverly’s few attempts at attacking to overly hopeful long balls. Waverly head coach Matt Hill said that his team was being a bit selfish at the start of the game.

“We were just taking too many touches, and carrying it too much,” Hill said. “They thought they could take the whole team on by themselves.” The Warrior defense held, however, and once Waverly’s attack sorted itself out, they created all of the scoring chances in the first half, starting with a free kick about 25 yards from goal. Rather than opting for a shot, Waverly played it short to St. Luc Picard at the top of the box, and his flick with the outside of his right foot forced a good save by the Titan keeper. The chances kept coming for the Warriors, but they were unable to convert and the half ended 0-0. It didn’t stay that way for long, however. Jacob Miller opened the scoring less than two minutes after the break, with a fine individual effort in which he weaved through four Lumen defenders, found space in the Titan box and blasted a shot inside the far post to give

Waverly a 1-0 lead. Peter Stebbins doubled that when he took a quick throw-in from Ben Wurst down the leftwing sideline, and his defender fell down just outside the box. Stebbins walked in on goal and placed the ball past the helpless keeper to make the score 2-0. Josh Perez scored the first of his two goals when Joey Ray won the ball 25 yards out and sent Perez into the box with a perfect through ball. Perez beat the keeper to the pass and slotted home to make the score 3-0. Hill said that the lesson learned was that team play wins games. “In the second half, they started to possess, play their game trust their team and believe in each other,” he said. Hill said that the first two-game winning streak of the season, coming after two straight 6-1 losses, is most welcome. “Since the summer, with all the changes that the team has been through, we’ve had a lot of

Shaughnessy: NITC forum successful DELTA TWP. - State Rep.

Deb Shaughnessy said she was very encouraged by the interest expressed and information shared at a forum she hosted Monday, Sept. 12, on the proposed New International Trade Crossing project. Shaughnessy, R-Charlotte, served as moderator for the forum, which was attended by about 50 people. Participating in the forum were Matt Smego of the Michigan Farm Bureau; Mickey Blashfield, representing the Detroit International Bridge Company; and Tom Shields, representing the Coalition to Build the NITC. The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce submitted a letter in support of the NITC, which was included in handouts to the audience. Discussion focused on

whether a second bridge is needed to connect Detroit and Windsor, or if the existing Ambassador Bridge should be expanded. The proposal is contained in Senate Bills 410 and 411. The content of these bills can be viewed on the Michigan Legislature’s website at www.legislature.mi.gov. “I think we had a very good airing of both sides of this issue, and those who attended walked out with a greater understanding of the arguments each side has either in favor of or in opposition to the bridge,” Shaughnessy said. “The issues facing Michigan are complex and I appreciate the perspectives and questions constituents provided during the meeting.” Each speaker was given
