They will also be available at the door for $15. “The awards reception gives residents a chance to come together to celebrate what makes Delta Township so special and unique,” said township supervisor Ken Fletcher. With 13 young people nominated for the Young Person of the Year Award, three of them more than once, this year’s judges have a lot of work to do. Various local civic organizations will also be honored as this year’s “Pride of Delta” guests for the efforts their members make to serve the community. These include Friends of the Delta Library, the Delta Historical Society, Kiwanis of Delta, the

Bretton Woods Lions, the Lansing/ Delta Lions and Lionesses and the Delta/Waverly Rotary. The organizations will have representatives in the hotel lobby before the actual program starts so that audience members can learn more about what they do. The 23-member Waverly Reflections choral group will provide the evening’s entertainment and the emcee will be WLNS TV co-anchor Greg Adaline.

SIREN donations accepted in Delta DELTA TWP. - According to statistics offered by SIREN/ Eaton Shelter, Inc. of Charlotte, over 50 percent of all women are battered at some time in their lives and more than one-third are battered repeatedly every year. That means that residents of Eaton County likely know a survivor of domestic violence, even though they might not be aware that the person is being victimized. “In recognition of Domestic Violence Prevention Awareness Month, SIREN has teamed again this year with the Delta Township Manager who is accepting donations of clothing, non-perishable food stuffs, cleaning and laundry products and diapers in all sizes,” said

Susan Steinberg, a SIREN volunteer from Charlotte. “We are again indebted to Delta Township for allowing their offices to serve as a drop-off point for the items needed so desperately by SIREN/Eaton clients. And, during this commemorative period, we hope Eaton County residents will make it a point to donate something off of SIREN’s Wish List.” Other items needed by the shelter can be found on the agency’s website at www.sireneaton.org. Donations will be accepted at the drop-off location, inside Delta Charter Township, 7710 W. Saginaw Highway in Lansing, through Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Brothers Alex (l) and Jack O’Connor were honored by the Delta Township Board Oct. 17 for their efforts to clean up trash on Elmwood south of Saginaw. The boys, both students at St. Gerard’s and Boy Scouts, came up with the idea after riding their bikes with their parents, Kevin and Laura, from their home in Snow Ridge to the new East West Connector in Sharp Park. With them is township supervisor Ken Fletcher. MARY JO WHITE/LCN

DEMOCRATS IN ACTION ’s people choice

Eaton Dems hold annual dinner Over 150 people attended the dinner, including former U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer Eaton County Democratic Party Annual Dinner, Democrats in Action, at the Grand Ledge Country Club on Sept. 29. Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, House Democratic Floor Leader Kate Segal, and Jocelyn Benson, chair of Engage Michigan, spoke to an attentive audience about opportunities ahead to make Eaton County and Michigan a better place to live. “The dinner was a reflection of the community service and political activism Eaton County Democrats have, and will continue to take part in,” party chair, Jacky Tennis said. “This night is about celebrating

2011

our accomplishments among friends.” The grand door prize was a week at Lake Anne Louise Resort in the Upper Peninsula and a favorite silent auction item was an autographed copy of Governor Jennifer Granholm’s new book, A Governor’s Story: The Fight For Jobs and America’s Economic Future. Highlighted in the evening were the volunteers, who helped with the Adopt-aHighway clean up, those who participated at the Eaton County Fair booth, and those who go out on a regular basis to help with events which improve the communities they live.

Vaccination: for Health or Profit? Part III

October 23, 2011

As I have mentioned in Part II, Bart Classen MD., is the world’s foremost expert on the vaccine-diabetes connection. He feels that the risk of diabetes from vaccination far outnumbers any potential benefits. His study, published just this year in the British Medical Journal, revealed a 147% increase in the rate of diabetes seen in approx. 116,000 vaccinated children. In 1996, ABC World News Tonight aired a special report on common childhood vaccines and their relationship to diabetes.

It warned parents that the risk of this disease has increased by 60% in the US and Finland in children under 5 years old. The effects of vaccination on the production of diabetes, asthma, autism, polio (yes, the only cases of polio are from the vaccine itself), Aids, and even cancer, is becoming a worldwide issue. If you think this can’t happen to your child, think again! According to Barbara Loe-Fisher, President of the National Vaccination Information Centre in Virginia, author, and personal friend, “When it Happens to Your Child, the Risk is 100%” & Edda West, who heads up Canada’s VRAN (Vaccine Risk Awareness Network), agrees. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, most parents are still led to believe that vaccination is “good for you” and there are “minimal risks”. Although the immediate reactions to vaccination can be life-threatening, diabetes and other autoimmune diseases may not surface for months or years to come. Lets look at the “logic” of some vaccines; did you know that the MMR (measles) vaccine can lower your child’s immune system for up to four

years after it is administered? It can also set up a persistent infection in the intestine which can lead to Leaky-gut syndrome and Crohn’s disease. Not popular side effects! You have most likely wondered what Hepatitis is all about. It is a liver disease seen only in adults and only among those using needle street drugs, those exposed to contaminated blood products, and sexually promiscuous individuals. It is NOT a childhood disease; is NOT highly contagious; and is not a killer. The Health Dept. and your physician request that your baby receive the Hepatitis vaccine to protect him/her. Most authorities, however, agree that a child’s immune system is very immature and the benefits of this vaccine only last for 5-9 years. If this is fact, why give it to children? Is there a growing concern of your child being promiscuous and using needles and drugs in grade one? Or is there a hidden agenda? See you in two weeks for part IV

arents in Michigan can keep track of how their young drivers are performing behind the wheel when they’re not in the car with them. The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association says more than 16,000 vehicles are registered in a program called STOPPED, which stands for Sheriffs Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers. Parents who participate in the free program are given stickers to place on the inside of the front windshields of their teens’ cars. When a young motorist driving a vehicle with the sticker is stopped by a sheriff’s deputy, his or her parents will be sent a letter with details even if a ticket is not issued. There’s no down side to the STOPPED program.

recovered. “Definitely a disappointing loss,” Waverly head coach Mike Wallace said. “We started out flat, we definitely didn’t have enough energy in the first quarter, and we were in a 17-0 hole before we got moving.” Waverly actually outgained Holly in total offense, 393 yards to 348, 322 of those in the air. “Once we turned it on, we moved the ball very efficiently on offense,” Wallace said, “and defensively we were solid. We were able to play up to our potential for two quarters.” The Warriors closed the opening deficit in a hurry, scoring twice in the second quarter, on a 14-yard pass

HOLLY -- Waverly’s hopes

for their first appearance in the MHSAA football playoffs since 2002 were dashed in a disappointing 37-25 defeat at Holly on Oct. 14. The loss dropped the Warriors to 4-4, putting the six-win threshold necessary for automatic qualification out of reach. There is a remote chance that the Warriors could qualify with five wins, but the possibility is all but wholly mathematical. The contest was almost over as soon as it began, with Holly scoring the first 17 points of the game, from which the Warriors never

from Jordan Martin to Alante Sims and a 50-yard bomb from Martin to LeJchon Marshall that made it a game again, 17-14 at the half. The first drive of the second half could have been the turning point of the game for the Warriors, but instead stopped their comeback bid in its tracks. Waverly took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched down to the Holly 23-yard line, but fumbled it there. The Bronchos scored on a 77-yard run the other way on the next snap, turning the Warriors’ bid to take their first lead of the game into an 11-point deficit, 24-13. “That was the crushing blow, right there,” Wallace said. “The problem that we had was responding to adversity. We fumbled the ball, yeah, bad things are going to happen. Now, are you going to put your head down? That’s what happened, we felt sorry for ourselves and weren’t prepared for the next play.” Another Waverly turnover later in the game was also immediately converted to points by Holly, a 60-yard

quarterback keeper on the first play after a Warrior fumble on the Broncho 40-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Delano Glosson scored on a 2-yard run late in the third, and Marshall caught another long TD pass from Martin for 90 yards that served only to make the final score 37-25. “We did right the ship, but a little too late,” Wallace said. Waverly was flagged for 12 penalties for 95 yards in the game, compared to Holly’s two penalties for 10 yards. Wallace felt that not all of the called infractions were entirely justified. “We had some penalties where we weren’t quite focused,” Wallace said. “But when you play out of conference and at someone else’s house, sometimes you find yourself outnumbered, let’s put it that way.” Waverly finished their season at Home against Fowlerville on Oct. 21, after this paper went to press. If the Warriors beat the Gladiators, they earned their first winning season since 2003.
