Historical society needs helping hands Members seek young newbies, volunteers and more donations Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com

T

hey’ve moved two buildings — lock, stock and barrel — to the seven-acre Miller Farm complex. They’ve refurbished the house, reopened the ice cream parlor, planted gardens and hung a bell on the schoolhouse. And this weekend they cooked 200 rib dinners, plus hot dogs and Sloppy Joes, for the Oldsmobile Rally crowd driving down from Lansing. Meet the members of the Eaton Rapids Area Historical Society, a mighty mouse of an organization that doesn’t seem to have “can’t” in its vocabulary. “Anything you do at home, we do here,” said Doreen Baker. “This is our home away from home.” In fact, Baker and her electrician husband, Tom, figure they spend about 25 hours a week at the complex, more when there’s a big event like the Dam Festival. Tom also spent several hundred hours wiring the entire Jean Kline Block. Last Wednesday Tom was installing an on-off switch on a 1940s press in the print shop of the Jean Kline Block. The church piano had been tuned for a weekend wedding and the grass had been mowed by Ed Kleehammer. Former mayor Jamie Davidson is a frequent mower, too, and Mike Stahl is a jack-of-all-trades, whom Kleehammer describes as “the man, the myth, the legend” for all he does at the complex.

Teamwork

These folks pull together. The whole Jean Kline Block, for example, was made possible by Cernyw Kline in memory of his late wife, a very active historical society member. Besides the print shop, it will house a funeral home, a general store and a photo studio complete with a dark room. There are thoughtful, loving touches throughout the complex. The beautiful antique gas lamp in the church, for instance, that was discovered in the dropped ceiling and is now lit at Christmas. The block in the print shop that was once used to print report cards for Eaton Rapids High School. The 1950s atmosphere in the ice cream parlor. No one could ever question the dedication of this group. But with about 30 members of an 80-member roster able and willing to work, the society needs

Doreen Baker and Ed Kleehammer in the replica of the Plains Road Bible Church, which can be rented for weddings. On the stand is an 1854 Bible. The pews are refurbished originals and the stained glass windows are from the Robbins United Methodist Church. MARY JO WHITE/LCN help. With a $2,500 utility bill every month, cash is appreciated. But it would also be great to have some younger members, especially to act as docents in the Jean Kline shops, according to the Bakers. Every kind of skill is useful, though, even if someone is available for only a few hours a month. “Whatever you feel is your comfort zone or niche of talent, it can be appropriately used,” said member Mae Locke, adding a whole list of indoor and outdoor opportunities. People are needed for kitchen work, cutting cloth, painting, gardening and giving guided tours, to name just a few. Locke also emphasizes that the Society covers not just city residents but those who live in Eaton Rapids and Hamlin Townships, as well as within the Eaton Rapids school district. “Please help us keep the ‘quaint’ in our beautiful city on the river,” she said. Check out the group’s website, www.eatonrapidshistory.com, and, if you would like to volunteer, call Pat Hastay at 663-3137. It really does take a village to build one.

This is his second year of racing a mini cup car — this car is half the size of a spirit cup car. Coming off of a “rookie of the year” season in 2010, he is showing continued improvement this year. He races at M-40, Springport Speedway, Auto City in Flint and Kalamazoo Speedway. He will be racing next at Springport on June 18. School year proves to be a safe one in ER We have successfully completed another school year. I would like to thank all of you for working with us to make this past school year safe. While we did experience a few instances of assaultive type behavior, we have seen a steady decline in these incidents. We attribute the decline to hard work on the part of our school administrators and to you, as parents, who are taking a more hands on role. Several students were referred to our in school probation program and completed it successfully. This is a great accomplishment and I would like to thank Eaton Intermediate School District and Deb Williamson. Every year children and adults suffer needless catastrophic brain injuries due to accidents that occur while bicycling. This year, as in years past, the Eaton Rapids Police Department, in conjunction with the St. Mary’s Field Neurosciences Institute, are offering a

GUEST COLUMN Paul Malewski coupon from the McDonald’s Corporation for a free ice cream cones or apple dippers. Officers will be handing out these coupons to children that they observe demonstrating safe bicycling skills and wearing helmets. We wish to gratefully acknowledge our partners, the McDonalds Corporation and St. Mary’s Institute, for their generous contribution. Did you know that it is against city ordinance to walk your pet in the cemetery? How about parking on your front lawn or allowing large amounts of refuse to accumulate and overflow your trash bin? Please help us to keep Eaton Rapids a great place to work, play and raise your family. Don’t walk your dog in the cemetery. It’s unsightly and disrespectful to those that are interred there as well as the

families that come to visit. Please park in your driveway, not on your front lawn. When that trash starts to accumulate, get rid of it. It not only attracts vermin but it is unsightly and creates a health hazard. We have seen a definite increase in our night time activity. Please keep those cars locked, the garage doors down and valuables out of sight. The 4th of July is shaping up to be quite a celebration. Please take the opportunity to volunteer for one of the many events. The Eaton Rapids Police Department is sponsoring a Jelly Belly Jelly Bean contest at City Hall. For a quarter, you can try and guess how many jelly belly jelly beans are in a glass cookie jar. Guess correctly and win the jelly beans and the jar. All of the proceeds from the contest will go towards the 4th of July festivities.

years. Making this more financially treacherous, our school funding per student was reduced. Additionally, during the last few years, the students we serve have become more complicated. These challenges are made just that much worse by our operating circumstances. We are a people business (85 percent of our expenses are employee costs) and it is difficult to adjust our business practices when we lose five to six students each grade over 13 grades. Thanks to a lot of work on the part of the staff with excellent direction and working parameters given to us from the board, we serve our students well (our key test scores are stable or slightly higher) with the money we were given. We should give some credit to our Finance Committee (our chair is Jon Althouse) and our CFO, Collin Smith, as we ended 2010-2011 with a balanced budget. This year, the political climate has changed drastically. Our governor and new legislators have passed many education bills and have handed us a smaller funding package that it

so intricate, we will have a hard time “unwrapping” it. Three years ago, I was part of a small group of superintendents who developed a legislative platform for education that covered academics and operations. Many of these new pieces of legislation align with that platform and give school leaders better tools to manage school systems, albeit now with less money. For Eaton Rapids Public Schools, we have chosen to serve our community next year by closing Northwestern school and having slightly fewer employees. Our approach for next year is really no different than in years past. We plan to give great learning opportunities to our students while continuing to live within our means. The fun part of this job is the hope in the future that children and young adults bring to us every day. We also know that we can continue our drive for their success carefully so our students will not feel the curves in the road nor see the fog that is all around us.

One of the blessings or curses in a school community is the relationship between its board of education and its superintendent. In our community, we have competent board members who attend the appropriate training sessions and conferences and stay abreast of the political PAW climate. While there PRINTS are minor disagreements from time to time, there is mutual respect between the board members and myself. We share goals of creating a vibrant learning environment Bill for kids. It is important DeFrance because it has grounded us for next year’s challenges. This year was by far the most challenging year that we have faced. We took a bond proposal to the community twice and twice it failed. The second time we fell short by just over 60 votes. We had fewer students in the school system this year; where this has been a trend for the last dozen

bat pretty well and our pitcher kept us in the game.” Vander Laan was pleased with pitcher Kolette Schrier’s performance. “We pitched around Binkowski and Baker pretty well, they didn’t have any extra-base hits on us,” he said. “She’s (Schrier) only 14 years old so she’s a young freshman, and to come into this kind of atmosphere and do that well against that good of a team shows me a lo. That’s typical of our whole team, we could have folded when we were down 6-0 in the second inning, but they just kept battling, I am really proud of them.” Warriner said he was also proud of his team and

what they accomplished this season, setting a new school record with a 36-6 overall record. This is the seventh straight year the Greyhounds have won 30 or more games. He started four freshman and three juniors throughout most of the season. He loses four seniors, down from last year when the Greyhounds lost nine seniors. “With such a young group we got a lot accomplished and we feel very good about that,” he said. “We have a lot to look forward to, but right now this hurts.” Greyhound seniors in their last game were Schaeffer, Heather Lauck, Alexis Olson Tabitha Levering and Mallory Kunkel.

GRAND RAPIDS - Eaton Rapids softball, after an 8-2 win over Williamston in the regional semifinal, lost to South Christian 3-0 in the final Saturday. This is the second year in a row the Greyhounds have lost in the regional final, last year losing 3-2 to Williamston. The Greyhounds fell behind 2-0 to South Christian in the top of the third inning, but looked to rally in the bottom of the fourth when Kasidy Coats hit a one-out double off the centerfield fence. Mallory Kunkel was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. But the Greyhounds failed to score with the next two batters grounding out to third and popping out to second base. Eaton Rapids threatened again in the bottom of the sixth when Erin Binkowski singled and was followed by a Bailey Baker walk. But once again, the Greyhounds were unable to push a run across when the next two

batters popped up to the infield. The third out came when Baker was called out for interference on a grounder to the shortstop on a hit by Payton Benton. “We just didn’t get the bats going in the second game and they did, they had some key timely hits and we weren’t able to come up with the hits when we needed them,” Eaton Rapids coach Scott Warriner said. “We didn’t force them to play any defense, we hit way too many pop ups. We struggled in the second game and they capitalized on it.” For South Christian, it was the first regional win under Coach Tara Schreur in her four years at the helm of the Sailors (21-12). Eaton Rapids scored six runs in the first two innings in the semifinal win over Williamston. “The only thing I was disappointed with was that we didn’t play our best defense, we made way too many errors,” Williamston coach Steve Vander Laan said. “I thought we swung the

GRAND LEDGE — Administrators for the Grand Ledge Public Schools have been measurably better at controlling the cost of employee insurance than any other district in the mid-Michigan area. And that has turned out to be a mixed blessing, with difficulties in recruiting employees, and apparently little or no credit for what they have already done to reduce costs. Tom Goodwin, the Grand Ledge school district’s chief financial officer, is frustrated because, even after taking a hard line with employees and controlling insurance costs, they will receive the same reduction in state aid as districts which did much less. But they have less room to maneuver to deal with the cut. The governor’s office has suggested schools could deal with this loss of state funds by simply requiring all school employees to pay 20 percent of the premiums for their insurance coverage. This will not work in Grand Ledge, where teachers already pay 30 percent or more of their insurance premiums. Goodwin is skeptical of the claim that the new administration wants to run government like a business. “No businessman would, after acquiring a number of factories, and finding some performing well and others poorly, apply the identical remedy to each of them,” Goodwin said. “It’s intellectually lazy.”

Costs vary

LJ-0100099571

Superintendent Jacklin Blodgett said she believes the district’s higher staff to student ratio accounts for part of their higher per pupil insurance costs. In Okemos, employees pay 10 percent of insurance premiums and the district pays 90 percent, so increases in insurance premiums are shared by the district and the employees, said Robert Clark, the dis-

trict’s Director of Finance. The Lansing School District has taken a different approach, by defining the amount teachers pay, which requires the district to pay the rest of the cost, including all annual increases. This means a Lansing teacher pays either $25 or $50 per month toward insurance coverage with the schools paying the balance, according to the teacher

In 2010 in Grand Ledge, $637 of each pupil’s funds were used for employee insurance, compared to $1,643 in the Lansing Schools and $1,289 in Waverly. Grand Ledge has accom-

plished these lower costs not by any magic, but by placing a cap on the amount they pay toward insurance coverage, and requiring their teachers and other employees to pick up the difference, a larger amount each year as the schools’ contribution remains relatively constant and insurance premiums increase. The result has been Grand Ledge teachers paying more than $400 per month toward their insurance coverages, more than 30 percent of the total premium, and for some teachers as much as 49 percent, depending on family status and the plan chosen. “We have a cap. What we have done is effectively kept from having to make these caps higher. Some years they have taken an increase in the cap in lieu of a salary increase,” said Daniel Davis, Grand Ledge Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. “We just haven’t invested a lot of new money in this in the last 16 years.” The Charlotte Public Schools have also remained in the bottom third of employee insurance costs by limiting the amount the district pays. “Our contracts have cost containment for all employee groups,” said Donald Sovey the district’s financial services advisor. “Every year, we look at ‘what is the most the district will pay.’ If the employees choose to have a healthier plan, then it’s on their dollars. We have been able to provide reasonable health care offerings, but it’s a cooperative enterprise with employees.” The Waverly schools also have a cap on the district’s contribution, but Assistant
