Eaton County Fair opens Monday
July 10, 2011
It’s moving week for local teachers
Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com
EATON RAPIDS — Greyhound Early Leaning Center director Amy Allen says she’ll definitely miss many things when her program moves to Union Street The toddler height windows and shaded play area, for instance. The natural light in the gym and the hungry deer her students can often glimpse from their classroom. But Allen is determined to make the move from Greyhound Central succeed and is brimming with new ideas to implement when she’s settled at Union Street. “We’re going to make it work,” she said of the move for her “quality program,” while waiting for Two Men and a Truck to arrive July 6, all her materials packed in large white boxes and metal cages.
Flexibility needed
Starting tomorrow, Monday, July 11 local residents don’t have to go far to find thrilling midway rides, yummy treats and a look at what the county’s youth have been doing in 4-H. The Eaton County 4-H Fair will run through July 16 in Charlotte at the fairgrounds, located at 1025 S. Cochran. For detailed pricing information and a schedule of events visit www.eatoncountyfair.com on the Web. Also see inside this week’s edition for detailed information about the annual event. See pages 9 to 12. FILE PHOTO/LSJ
Right Start teacher Colleen Stahl, also on deck for the move, is on the same wavelength, and both women are thinking ahead to new fundraisers and other activities. As successful professionals they’re flexible and creative — they have had to be. The Union Street playground equipment,
Right Start teacher Colleen Stahl (l) and Greyhound Early Learning Center director Amy Allen check out the materials they’ve packed for the center’s move to the Union Street building July 6. Although she’ll miss the toddler height windows, the shaded play area and the sight of deer in the woods, Allen says she’s looking forward to making her program work in the new location. MARY JO WHITE/LCN unsuitable for the youngest children, will have to be fenced off and Allen is hoping most, if not all, of what she currently has will be able to be moved. The Early Learning kids aren’t the only people on the move in what District Superintendent Bill DeFrance doesn’t hesitate to describe as “chaos” this summer. With the closing of Northwestern Elementary for a savings of over $200,000, third-graders will be moving to Greyhound Intermediate and secondgraders to Lockwood. In
addition, sixth-graders will go to the middle school next fall. The new configuration will mean all Eaton Rapids students will be on the central campus and transportation costs will be less, according to DeFrance. But he knows that no move is trouble free. “Schools are students’ homes and we’re trying to be sensitive,” DeFrance said, adding that at least some of the Early Learning Center playground equipment will follow the kids to Union Street.

exercise is designed to test and evaluate new evacuation equipment, as well as best practices associated with their use. “The exercise will challenge and evaluate the hospitals ability to actually evacuate ‘simulated
patients’ playing as actors,” said Tom Shaver of CEMA, the lead planner for the exercise. “We will test and evaluate new, as well as existing evacuation procedures in order to identify best practices that can then be
shared with other regional hospitals.” With this project, District 1 Regional Medical Coalition will once again offer a Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) compliant exercise to the mid-
Michigan area. HSEEP is a program in which exercises are designed and evaluated according to a national standard. The resulting exercise materials and lessons learned are then shared
with others across the country. This opportunity is made possible by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration.

EATON RAPIDS — Eaton Rapids Medical Center (ERMC) has announced that a full-scale emergency exercise will be held on Thursday, July 14 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at ERMC. The exercise scenario features a major flood and power outage in Eaton Rapids, leading the hospital to shelter-in-place and eventually evacuate. A major priority of the ERMC is being prepared when the community is in a time of need. District 1 Regional Response Coalition has partnered with Comprehensive Emergency Management Associates, Inc. (CEMA) to conduct the drill. “This exercise is about identifying best practices and guidelines for an organized, systematic and safe response to a situation that may require a partial or full evacuation of a hospital,” said Don Edwards, DO, medical director for the District 1 Regional Response Coalition. ERMC’s Incident Command Center will be activated to manage the response to partially evacuating the hospital. The

Eaton Rapids schools to offer virtual classes Eaton Rapids Virtual School is coming to Eaton Rapids Public Schools in the fall and will provide students an opportunity to learn from home instead of the more traditional classroom setting. The school board voted to enter into an agreement with Job Skill Technology, PAW Inc. to use the K-12 brand PRINTS of educational software for the Virtual High School. We Bill DeFrance are excited about the ability to expand our learning options. The idea is for students that are not part of Eaton Rapids Public Schools to be able to be part of the district by enrolling in up to six classes a semester while staying
at home and doing their course work online. This delivery method will allow students more flexibility in their schedule while maintaining high academic standards and teacher support. The 140-course program covers core classes, electives, advanced placement and foreign languages. Those enrolling in the school can include students now being home-schooled, former parochial school students, suspended/expelled students, dropout students or teen mom students. Our partnership for this offering, is Job Skill Technology headquartered in Troy, Mich. Job Skill Technology, Inc. is training school districts to offer virtual high schools, finding students and offering support services. “By offering this alternative online solution, Eaton Rapids will see students enroll in the district that have
never enrolled previously. We have always wanted to expand our relationships with students who have not been traditionally part of our K-12 school system.” Virtual School students get online access to their courses and receive books and lab kits sent directly to their homes. They are also eligible for the extracurricular activities offered to Eaton Rapids Public School students. Students and teachers communicate via e-mail, phone and webinars. A meeting with families interested in enrolling their children will be scheduled soon to discuss the virtual school and the opportunities available. Online learning is a great learning option for many students and we have great partner in Job Skill Technology, Inc. and K!2, Inc. Bill DeFrance is the superintendent of Eaton Rapids Public Schools.

CHARLOTTE — This year at the Eaton County Fair, you will find many years of continued tradition in front of the grandstands. On Sunday, July 10 your family can enjoy the Mini Mod Tractor Pulls, compliments to the full sponsorship of Bryners Septic Service. Come down and see what those MINI’s really CAN pull. Each day only costs $4 or $5 per person to enjoy a day full of great family fun. Any child 12 and under enters for free for all prefair events on July 8 to 10. • Saturday – July 9 - $5 all day - Horse Pulls 4 p.m. • Sunday – July 10
- Mini Mod Tractor Pulls 2 p.m. Even though the pre-fair events are bringing back old traditions, we would never want to “fix” a traditional line up of events that aren’t “broken.” We will continue the same schedule during the fair week grandstand shows that we had last year. • Monday – July 11 - Diesel Semi/Truck Pulls 7 p.m. • Tuesday – July 12 - Figure 8 Demolition Derby 7:30 p.m. • Wednesday – July 13 - Auto Enduro 7:30 p.m. • Thursday – July 14 - Truck/Tractor Pulls 7 p.m. • Friday – July 15 - Truck/Tractor Pulls 7 p.m.

Grandstand line-up offers much variety
JULY 2011
Head to the fair this week for fun, thrills Dear residents,
Can we go to the fair? It wouldn’t be summer time fun until you had that bite of a corn dog or cotton candy, took a ride on the Tilt A Whirl or took a walk through the animal barns. When scheduling your vacation, be sure to add some summer fun with a stop at the Eaton County Fair that runs from July 11 to 16. Grab an ice cream cone and enjoy a walk through the animal barns, maybe
even sit awhile and watch our talented youth exhibit their livestock during show day. Or, after a long day at work, grab a corn dog and head to the grandstands for a night of excitement. Which of these sound exciting to you? Monday night – Semi pulls and Street Truck Pulls, Tuesday night – Figure Eight Racing, Wednesday night – Auto Enduro, Thursday and Friday nights – Truck and Tractor Pulls, Saturday
night – Moto Cross. Can’t pick just one? You don’t have to. Stop in each night and enjoy the fun. Tired of the Monday through Friday routine? Elliott Amusement Rides will get your blood pumping. You can ride the Big Wheel, Bumper Cars, Merry Go Round or just sit and watch the free entertainment, in the entertainment tent. For gate pricing, event times, judging activities
and grandstand schedule, visit our Web site at eatoncountyfair.com <http:/ /eatoncountyfair.com> . See you at the fair!

Midway rides, food offered at Eaton fairgrounds CHARLOTTE — Since 2002, Tracy and Debbie Elliott have spent the majority of their efforts building their own carnival. And with that, a solid route of fairs and festivals across the southern portion of Michigan. Family and good friends made the journey much easier. Their son, Nick, is the operations manager, his fiancé, Kasey, is the Game Concessions Manager and DOT Administrator. Nate Rowe was a family friend and now manages the food concessions. Tracy’s dad, Jim Elliott, contributes to the over- all operation by
doing anything that’s needed at any time. Besides running for parts and handling the mail, he finds time to keep staff all in line. New for 2011 is a Fabbri Cortina Bob, a thrill ride including lights, music and sirens. So far this season, it’s a HIT. Other thrill rides include the Zipper, Sea Ray, Rok N Rol, as well as family rides like the Tilt A Whirl, Ferris Wheel, 100 ‘ Slide, Paratrooper and more. The Bumper Cars is a favorite for the young teens. The little ones have not been forgotten. There’s plenty of rides for them
to enjoy. From Crocodiles to Spinning Strawberries to Helicopters that fly high, our smallest of patrons will enjoy their day. Don’t forget the fair food. There will be spicy sausage with onions and peppers, or you could have an elephant ear with powdered sugar and cherries. Everybody likes to try the deep fried oreos. If that’s not enough, there are hand dipped corn dogs, ice cream and lemonade shake-ups. Something for everyone. There are Daily Specials including $1 Day on Tues- Midway rides await local residents at the Eaton County Fair this week in Charlotte. RON SANFORD/LSJ day from noon to 4 p.m

CHARLOTTE — This year’s Eaton County fair kicks off with the performing arts and talent show, where 4-H members will compete in acting out plays, putting on skits, dancing, singing, or playing an instrument. This event takes place at the Eaton Rapids High School Auditorium on July 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is a taped event and patrons will be able to view the recording during fair week in the gray exhibit building. The grey Exhibit building houses all the non-livestock and open class projects. Each 4-H club will be putting up a display, in their booth, with all their members’ non-livestock projects. When browsing the nonlivestock projects you could see everything from crafts, cooking and crops to restorations and wood working. Stroll through the animal
barns to see the different species of cows, goats, horses, llamas, pigs, poultry, rabbits, and sheep. Be on the lookout for kids moving animals from barns to show arenas throughout the week as they participate in breed, market and showmanship classes. There will be “you be the judge” contests, where you’ll find 4-Her’s judging different animals just like a real judge would throughout the week. The grand and reserve showmen in both large and small animals will be competing for the ultimate title of Grand Champion Sweepstakes Showman. During these competitions each showman will have to show each of the animals listed in either animal’s category and try to earn as many points as possible to win the ultimate title of being the grand showman for either small or large animal sweepstakes. Both the large and small animal sweepstakes will
take place on Saturday July 16. The large animal sweepstakes contest will take place in the horse arena on the east end of the fairgrounds at 9 a.m. and the small animal sweepstakes contest will takes place in the Wawiernia Pavilion, between the sheep and pig barns at 10 a.m. In these two competitions, 4-Her’s in the large animal area will be showing horses, beef and dairy cows, llamas, hogs, and sheep. The small animal 4-Her’s will be showing poultry, rabbits, goats and dogs. Each year, 4-H members raise livestock projects to exhibit at the fair. Many of these projects are then auctioned off for purchase at the fair. The animals can provide quality meat for your freezer, or in some cases, can be resold to buyers at local resale yards. Buyers who purchase animals through the auctions also have a great venue for advertising their local business.
This year’s Jr. Livestock Auction is on Thursday, July 14, with the buyer barbeque beginning at 11 a.m. and the auction follows at 12 p.m. Bidders at the large animal sale can purchase beef, hogs and sheep. Please keep in mind that hogs may not be taken home after they enter the fairgrounds. Saturday, July 16, is the 31st annual Small Animal Auction with the buyers’ luncheon beginning at 1 p.m. and the auction to follow at 2p.m. Bidders at the small animal sale have the chance to purchase poultry, rabbits, and goats. On Friday, July 15 the aroma of BBQ chicken fills the air around the 4-H Food Shack. Chicken BBQ tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the Chicken BBQ near the 4-H Food Shack. The proceeds from the annual Chicken BBQ go to the Eaton County 4-H Council to fund scholarships, Exploration Days and other 4-H activities in the county.

CHARLOTTE — What are the volunteers of the Eaton County Fair Board even working so hard for? For the kids! The fair board invites the community down to enjoy yet again, two Kids Days
this year. The Kids Days will be on Tuesday, July 12 and Saturday, July 16. There will be many returning activities, including the pedal tractor pulls, fire barn bicycle drawings every hour from 1 to 4 p.m. each day, Strolling Clown
acts and Touch a Truck. The Touch a Truck exhibit is returning this year with even more fun and exciting “trucks” for kids to sit in and admire. We are even looking forward to having a helicopter. The Eaton County MSU
