Downtown pocket park dedication July 29 Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com
EATON RAPIDS — The tiny jewel of a park tucked next to city hall will be dedicated next Friday, July 29 at 2 p.m. Made possible by the generosity of Myrna Jean Pierce, the pocket park will be known as Mylo L. Stewart Park in honor of her late husband, who once owned a Chevrolet dealership nearby at 231 S. Main Street. Stewart was also in charge of school bus transportation before the local schools were consolidated. The park will eventually have a mural on the wall of the Eaton Rapids Public Library, which borders its
south side, so Joe Honsowitz and Matt Wycoff of Honsowitz Painters, Inc., were busy prepping the wall on July 19. Although the name of the artist who will create the mural hasn’t been announced, Kirk Wiltse is hoping for the job. Born and raised in Eaton Rapids, Wiltse is known for his ice sculptures and has been honored with an “Artist of the Year” award. Wiltse and Honsowitz were looking at paint samples on July 19 and Wiltse said he had some ideas for the project. He thought a view of the city from Island Park just might make a great addition to the heart of downtown.

Burnt Jackson St. home is finally demolished Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com
EATON RAPIDS — A few neighbors gathered July 19 to bid good-bye to the charred house at 307 Jackson Street that has been a painful reminder for over a year of the death of retired air traffic controller Jim Roberts, 50, who perished in the fire. Neighbors on both sides had long ago repaired their siding damaged by the fire, so the house itself and a few dead trees were all that remained as reminders of the blaze. “It’s hard because every day we look at this house and miss them,” said 22-year-old Ashley Banks, who lives across the street and used to some-
times care for dogs belonging to Roberts and his wife, Kathleen. “They were nice neighbors.” It didn’t take long for Brian Van Order of Michigan Demolition and Excavation to bring down the house. Next-door neighbor Carolyn Lowery said the smell of ashes was very strong after a rainstorm and the fact that Roberts’ bedroom was still standing was difficult. “I’m glad it’s gone,” Lowery said. “It was a constant reminder.” Brian Van Order of Michigan Demolition and Excavation takes down the charred remains of the home at 703 Jackson July 19, over a year after it burned. Jackson Street resident Carolyn Lowery discovered a duck sitting on eggs in the parking lot behind the old Miller restaurant recently. Concerned for her safety because she was gasping from the heat, Lowery put up a cardboard roof and filled a water bowl, which the duck emptied three times. Lowery later discovered this sturdy shelter built by someone else who had seen the duck’s plight. “It was kind of cool that someone made a custom-built house,” Lowery said. MARY JO WHITE/LCN

I was thrilled to see Gov. Rick Snyder create an Office of Great Start within state government. What a gift for Michigan’s children and ultimately for the state’s economy. The old way of thinking says children magically start learning when they enter kindergarten. These days we know better. Research confirms that learning begins at birth and children who get off to a great start tend to do better in school and life. The key now, of course, is to let the new Office of Great Start mature and grow, which will require continuing support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The pay-off will be substantial. Michigan is on the cusp of developing a nationallyrecognized early childhood system that will do more than anything else to increase the number of highly-skilled workers in Michigan. If we truly want to turn our state around, this is a step in the right direction.

Children entering kindergarten and sixth grade and any child changing school districts will need to meet immunization requirements before staring school this fall. Children entering kindergarten have always been required to receive booster doses of their childhood vaccines.
In the past, this meant an additional dose of DTaP, Polio, and MMR vaccine before starting kindergarten. The newest school rules, initiated in 2010, also require two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or a history of chickenpox disease. Most children received their first dose of varicella vaccine at age one. Sixth grade students have been required to receive a dose of Tetanus and diphtheria
(Td) vaccine. Current school rules, initiated in 2010, now require those sixth grade students who are at least 11 years of age receive a dose of Tdap (which provides a booster of pertussis/whooping cough with the Tetanus and diphtheria), a dose of Meningococcal vaccine, and two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or a history of chickenpox disease. Most children received their first dose of varicella vaccine at age one. Any child changing school districts will be required to have the above vaccines as appropriate for their age. These are the required vaccines for crafts, and the teachers school-entry. Preschool readiness program to be offered CHARLOTTE — Preschool means something different to each child who enters the classroom door. Research indicates that the most important skills a child needs to succeed when entering kindergarten are social skills — getting along with others, following instructions and adjusting to new caregivers (teachers). Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) provides opportunities for four year olds to learn and practice these skills. Here is what some of the parents of last year’s class said: “My granddaughter learned so much in school. She learned how to socialize with her peers. She learned
different songs and when she came home, she taught them to her sister.” “Great Start gave her an outlet to help her get friendships. She was so excited when she would come home and would learn something new.” Although kindergarten teachers across the county have indicated that if a child is socially and emotionally ready to learn academics are more easily taught in kindergarten, learning the foundations of academics is also an important part of the GSRP program. Foundations are built for literacy, upon which all other academics are constructed. “I really liked the learning activities, arts and

They may recommend Hepatitis A, influenza, and Human Papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for your adolescent. Your child will also be assessed for MMR and Hepatitis B vaccines. On July 19, a ninth property joined the Eaton County Parks system with the dedication of the Thornapple Trail bridge and access trail near the Maple Valley High School (MVHS) that serves Nashville and Vermontville area students. The bridge project was designed and built by the Building and Trades students at MVHS. The special Eaton County connector ties into the Paul Henry Thornapple Trail, which continues for 43 miles to Grand Rapids. The Michigander bike tour helped dedicate the trail as part of their annual West Michigan five-to-seven-day tour. For more information, call (517) 627-7351. NATIONWIDE COMPANY IN CHARLOTTE THIS WEEK BUYING GOLD, SILVER AND COINS. By David Morgan STAFF WRITER Been following the gold and silver market lately? Well if you have a jewelry box, a lock box full of gold or a coffee can full of old coins, you should be, according to Ohio Valley Refinery spokesperson John Miller. “The gold and silver markets have not been this strong for over 30 years” said Miller. Typically when the U.S. dollar is weak and the economy is flat, gold and silver markets soar. “That’s good news if you are sitting on a few gold necklaces or an old class ring” says Miller. Starting Tuesday at 9am and every day this week through Saturday, the Ohio Valley Refinery is setting up a satellite refinery right here in Charlotte at the Eaton County Fairgrounds. During their 5 day stay, anyone can bring gold, silver or platinum items and turn them in for immediate payment, explains John Miller. “Just about everybody has some amount of gold or silver just lying around collecting dust and this week anybody can sell theirs direct to our refinery. Typically selling direct to a refinery is reserved for larger wholesale customers like jewelry stores, pawn shops and laboratories” says Miller. “We are changing how business is done,” he explains “we want to do business with everybody so we took our business to the streets”. “Our teams visit various cities around the country hosting 5 day events and allowing the general public to take advantage of our services. “The turnout has been overwhelming” says Miller. “Usually
each day is busier than the previous day. It seems once people come to us and sell something, they are so amazed what an old ring or gold coin is worth, they go home and start digging around for more and telling relatives, friends and neighbors. It’s like a feeding frenzy by the third day. People line up with everything from gold jewelry to sterling silver flatware sets to old coins. I think during this bad economy everybody can use extra money, but most people say they are taking advantage of selling direct to our refinery because of the higher prices we pay”. During this special event, anyone is welcome to bring all types of gold, silver and platinum to the refinery and turn it in for instant payment. The types of items they will accept include all gold jewelry, gold coins, gold ounces, dental gold, old coins made before 1965 including silver dollars, halves, quarters and dimes, anything marked “sterling” including flatware sets, tea pots, silver bars, silver ounces and all industrial precious metals. What should you expect if you go to the event to sell your gold and/or silver? Just gather up all gold, silver and platinum in any form. If you are not sure if it’s gold or silver, bring it in and they will test it for free. When you arrive at the event you will be asked to fill out a simple registration card and will be issued a number. Seating will be available. When your number is called you will be escorted to a table where your

The value of the items will be determined based on up to the minute market prices. Live feeds will be available at the event displaying current market prices of all precious metals.
