Domestic violence court making a difference Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com
CHARLOTTE Eaton County District Court Judge Julie Reincke goes the extra mile with the defendants who come before her in the domestic violence court she started five years ago. On a typical Wednesday morning she congratulates some and chastises others. A few she immediately orders to jail, but tries to protect job and class schedules when possible. Almost all of them are men because the judge estimates that only about six percent of domestic violence offenders are women. On July 13, Reincke came down from the bench to shake hands with one offender who was in compliance with all the court had ordered him to do, despite holding down two jobs. “My hat’s off to you,” she said. Another man told Reincke he had recently “made a big step,” severing a two-year relationship with a partying girlfriend who threatened his sobriety. “There’s someone out there who will share a sober lifestyle,” she counselled him. One man, wearing what looked like expensive new athletic shoes, said he couldn’t afford to pay his court costs. Even though he’d been doing well in the
program for a long time, Reincke didn’t let him off the hook. His probation continues until his fees are paid. Another man admitted he had disobeyed the order imposed by the judge to have no contact with his victim, then lied about it for months. He got 15 days in jail.
Changing ways Like the sobriety court that helps drunk drivers mend their ways, the domestic violence court is based upon the assumption that jailing abusers doesn’t work because jail fails to change rock-bottom values and mindsets. Defendants who go through the Eaton County domestic violence court, one of three in the tri-county area, must waive confidentiality, agree to regular drug and alcohol screens, pay for and participate in treatment and come meet the judge every two weeks. The whole process can take two years and it’s not easy. One former defendant who successfully completed the program, a Navy combat veteran, called facing the court a “terrifying” experience. Domestic violence criminals are notoriously difficult to rehabilitate, having learned to minimize the harm they cause and shift blame to their victims, according to Bob Davis of Prevention and Treatment

THE FACTS Domestic violence is a pervasive problem. • One in every four women will experience it. • An estimated 1.3 million women are physically assaulted by their partners every year. • Boys who witness it are twice as likely to abuse as adults. • Most cases are never reported to the police. — Source: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

It is close to halfway through the summer and I want to describe the activity that I saw on our Greyhound campus. At the high school, fall sports teams were gearing up. I saw runners and football players beginning their conditioning. In the building, we had two classrooms of students finishing up their work for summer classes. While teachers had packed up their materials, movers were delivering the materials to new classroom homes. Northwestern teachers were heading to Lockwood and Greyhound Intermediate. Sixth grade teachers are becoming part of the middle school this year. Our summer literacy academy was in full swing at Greyhound Intermediate for over 200 stuPAW dents. Bus drivers and parents can be seen PRINTS dropping off and picking up students. We have breakfast and lunch for them on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for our six-week summer session. The Eaton Rapids Public Schools summer literacy academy won statewide recognition last year. Teachers in the program are staff mem- Bill bers who are with us during the school DeFrance year. Mrs. Kim Estes is the program director. The YMCA summer campers are also at Greyhound Intermediate. In between their activities, campers can also enjoy breakfast and lunch. Led by Brenda Hiemstra, the campers use the auditeria, the gym, the track, and the grounds. Adults and children are taking classes and lessons at the swimming pool from early morning until early evening. There was also a baseball invitational tournament at
our State St. athletic complex. In and around all this programming, our custodians and maintenance crews are getting our buildings ready for opening day. In some cases, we are cleaning individual rooms and areas of the building so we can get our staff in their rooms as part of our Northwestern move. The first summer that I was here, we had none of this activity. It is nice for us to be in a position to support this level of programming. Thanks to the parents, the community, and Eaton Intermediate School District, we have the facilities and funding to do this. Bill DeFrance is the superintendent of Eaton Rapids Public Schools.

Baseball season ends the win
Eaton Rapids Community News
EATON RAPIDS — The Eaton Rapids ‘Hounds 10U baseball team recently completed their season with a 13-6 win at Holt. The boys finished with a 7-9 overall record in what was the first year of travel baseball for many of them. The team competed well in the B division of the Mason Pony Baseball league. During league play (5-7 record), the ‘Hounds
defeated teams such as Fowlerville, Holt and Williamston while losing to Charlotte, Okemos, Fowlerville and Williamston. In tournament play, the 2-2 record included wins over Bellevue and Fowlerville and losses to the allstar teams from Jackson and Bosker Brick. cies that works with the court. Davis also says that traditional one-on-one therapy often doesn’t work because abusers are skilled at manipulating the therapist. Manipulation becomes much harder, though, when the judge, defense attorney, probation officer and counselors are on the same wavelength and talk to each other. In many cases, abusers have established a life-long pattern, having seen their fathers batter their mothers and enduring their own beatings as well. Those who come from generations of abuse, in fact, often find themselves estranged from their families once they try to break the cycle. “I don’t have any family I can rely on because they think I’m totally to blame,” one young offender told chief probation officer Liz Hoogstra, before the court session began July 13. Hoogstra, the second-in-command on Reincke’s domestic violence court team, never knows what she’ll hear when she meets individually with defendants before court begins. On July 13 she was astounded to learn that the man with the no-contact order had been lying to her and the judge for months. “I’m really struggling with the dis-
mound but several other pitchers competed as well like Nathan Dassance, Keegan Cribley, Caileb Brown, Nathan Bright, Kyle Jones, Spencer Dick, Charles Johns, Scott Rhoads and Brayden McDaniel. The offense was led by Nathan Dassance with a .520 batting average followed closely by Nathan Bright’s .517 average. Bronson Sysum carried a

.400 average followed by Brandon Osypczuk (.363), Brayden McDaniel (.350) and Kyle Jones (.333). Other contributors to the team effort all season included Chase Metts, RJ VanVliet and Garrett Lease. The boys ended on a positive note with the win at Holt and look forward to competing even more next summer.

EATON RAPIDS — The Eaton Rapids Lady ‘Hounds recently defended last year’s National Championship by going a perfect 8-0 in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Day 1 featured a 31-19 win over the North Court Netters of Kent City and a 38-22 victory over the Fulton County Dream Team. The second day included wins over the Livonia Hawks (23-14) and North Boone (29-14). Friday came and saw a 44-26 defeat of the Penn Lady Kingsmen and a 48-23 route of the Spiece Gym Rats. The final day, July 23, featured the top Division I bracket play. After drawing a firstround bye, the Lady ‘Hounds again matched-up with the North Court Netters. Eaton Rapids came out on fire and, behind Allie Dittmer’s 29 points, routed the Netters 50-26 to reach the championship game. Eaton Rapids faced the Muskegon Lady Wizards. The game was closely played from start to finish as Eaton Rapids battled
through foul trouble and turnovers. In the end, just like in 2010, the Eaton Rapids Lady ‘Hounds made some key free throws at the end and came away victorious with a 25-19 win. The ‘Hounds offense was led by Dittmer’s 61 total points while Bailey Baker added 59, Danielle Corrine
Rock 41 and Molly Dassance 26. Kelsey Johnson and Emily Reinecke each had 25 and Ciara Sundermann 20, Jenna Beemer 17, Ally Milam 8 and Marci Schaeffer 5. Meghan Dassance was injured and unable to play but helped tremendously on the bench as an assistant coach and teammate. Kath-
ryn Mills was also on the “unable to perform” list and was greatly missed on and off the court. Congratulations to the Class of 2014 girls basketball Lady ‘Hounds team members on achieving

The race takes place right after the parade. Many people stay to watch and see if their little yellow numbered duck is the winner as they glide toward the sluice gate in the river. This year’s winners were two-fold. They both chose to re-donate their $100 winnings back to the Lions. They were Mike Mills and Deb Brinson. D. LaHaine won $50 and Haley Kindy won $25. Three are honored at induction ceremony Company until 1977 when he began representing Maccabees Mutual. In February 1988 he became a Senior Agent with the Principal Financial Group. Giving back to the industry that has given so much to him has always been a big part of Hughes’ philosophy, “we make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give!” D. Joseph (Joe) Olson, of Brighton, retired from Amerisure Insurance Company in 2008 as vice president of government relations. Olson served as Michigan’s insurance commissioner from 1995 to 1997. Based on the belief that right ideas need active support, he was instrumental in establishing the Mackinaw Center for Public Policy. The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame was established at Olivet College in 1994 as a way to pay tribute to individuals who have made a significant impact on the ability of the Michigan insurance and risk management industry to serve the public. An election panel, representing a cross-section of the insurance and risk management
business, identifies leaders and/or innovators who have made significant contributions in five areas: product/ service development, education, recruiting new participants, legislative and regulatory activity, and exemplary service. Olivet College is also home to a nationally recognized undergraduate insurance and risk management program and an online Master of Business Administration in Insurance program. The college’s Alpha Alpha chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, an insurance, risk management and actuarial science organization for students, consistently ranks among the top three chapters in the nation each year, as well as the best chapter in the nation four times. In 2010, Olivet College and Thomas M. Cooley Law School established a groundbreaking partnership to coordinate curriculum programs aimed at supporting job growth in Michigan’s insurance industry. Eve, of Flint Township, has dedicated his career to sharing techniques and ideas on marketing and management to promote the successful growth and perpetuation of the independent agency system. His contributions to Michigan’s insurance industry have come from a broad spectrum of endeavors including the development and operation of his independent agency, consulting of agency systems, and establishment of Great Lakes Casualty Insurance Company. Robert B. Hughes, of East Lansing, has spent his career as a staunch advocate for a positive regulatory environment and ethical/professional conduct as a member of the financial services industry.
