LOWERING THE COUNTY’S DROPOUT RATE

CHARLOTTE — Kevin Munroe, 19, admits the pace of a traditional classroom isn’t for him. The local resident hit a wall his freshman year at Charlotte High School. “I was lazy,” he recalled. The last three years were spent at the school district’s alternative education program, the Learning Center — where he said he began loving school again. “It really turned my life around,” he explained. And this fall Munroe, along with over 60 students, moved from that program to it’s replacement. Relevant Academy is a new public school program under the jurisdiction of the Eaton Intermediate School District — those enrolled live all over the county. Located in what was Galewood Elementary, the school district closed the building this summer, Relevant Academy is based on a new approach to reaching 16 to 19 year-olds who have dropped out of high school. Relying on a largely on-line curriculum and a non-traditional classroom setting, the academy demands its 150 students take responsibility for advancing their high school education.

In their hands Angie Zeller, the associate superintendent of EISD and now the director of Relevant Academy, said students enrolled spend the first three weeks of school attending all-day, weekly class time.

“These kids are smart and they want structure. They’ve always wanted that. Here we can give them what they need.” ERIC EMERY, teacher But after that, students are only required to spend six hours a week at school. They are instead loaned lap tops and expected to progress in their chosen courses on their own time. What it amounts to, said Zeller, is an expected 30 hours a week of learning time and a ton of personal responsibility. “The idea is that it’s their time,” explained Zeller. “As efficiently as they can get through their course work, they can take their next course.” Munroe expects to be at the academy through this school year. He should have his diploma by then and is already taking classes at Lansing Community College as well. The structure of Relevant Academy is something he’s still adjusting to. Instead of standard classrooms, students move between four rooms, each with a different format. One even focuses on changing attitudes and lifting one’s selfesteem. Students work independently but have access to four teachers, each specializing in a core subject area, Zeller explains. So far, Munroe’s impression is

They give you lap tops, they give you wireless and it’s on you.” Exactly, said Zeller, who said the Relevant students are there because they want to be. It’s a recipe for success. The academy adheres to the same Michigan Merit Curricu-

lum as a traditional high school, but Zeller said students believe Relevant’s approach will produce better results. “The traditional learning environment doesn’t work for these kids,” said Zeller. “I do feel like this will be successful.” What academy staff hope to change is Eaton County’s high school dropout rate, now at 23 percent. “Almost a quarter of the stu-

dents is a large number no matter what you compare it to,” added Zeller. Relevant teacher Eric Emery taught at Charlotte schools’ Learning Center for 13 years before joining the new program. Area kinship care program is offered Seniors who are full time caregivers for children are faced with many challenges. It is important for caregivers to focus on parenting, but also to remember to take care of themselves. The Kinship Care Respite Program is a resource offered through the Tri County Office on Aging. The purpose is to give the full time caregiver over age 55 a break from their parenting responsibilities. This is accomplished by helping to arrange and pay for an activity for their child to attend through an appropriate provider. Examples of activities which the program can help pay

The Michigan Association of Substance Abuse Coordinating Agencies awarded its 2011 Spirit of Recovery Award to Victor Braatz, the executive director of Recovery Network Inc. and long-time advocate for evidenced based treatment practices. The Spirit of Recovery Award is given for Exemplary Leadership in Addiction Recovery and was awarded at the 2011 Michigan Substance Use Disorder conference at the Lansing Center on Sept. 12. In addition to Braatz’s work at Recovery Network, he also is a member of the Eaton County Substance Abuse Advisory Group, facilitates recovery groups for the Volunteers of America’s Lansing Veterans Housing Program, coordinates a community service program, is the coordinator of the Michael Skinner Memorial Community Garden and serves on the State Recovery Oriented Systems of Care steering committee. ER Lions building new handicap ramps The Eaton Rapids Lions Club completed building their 31st handicap ramp. The Lions build ramps for people who are in need and cannot afford to build a ramp. Each ramp costs approximately

At Eaton Rapids Public Schools and other school districts, we have worked hard to strengthen ways that students can connect with one another and the staff. In both the short and long term, it is extremely important that we help both those who mistreat and who are mistreated. Olivet College’s Snyder receives design honor OLIVET — Bruce Snyder, director of publications and Web services at Olivet College, was recently recognized by Graphic Design USA for his creation of the college’s 2010 Viewbook. Snyder, of Snyder Battle Creek, received a 2011 American Graphic Design Award for the project. More than 8,000 entries were submitted for the 2011 American Graphic Design Awards. Of these, a highly selective 15 percent were recognized with an award certificate of excellence. For nearly five decades, Graphic Design USA has

presented national design competitions that spotlight the areas of excellence and opportunity for creative professionals. The American Graphic Design Awards are open to all professionals including: advertising agencies, graphic design firms, corporations, institutions, publishers and more. Munroe said he’s as ready as ever to earn a diploma and take the next step in education. His aim is to go into architecture and transfer from Lansing Community College to a four-year university after he earns a diploma from Relevant Academy. “My motivation is to get out of high school, get to college and do what I want to do,” he said. That kind of dedication is not a surprise Emery. He said the students at Relevant academy are bright and motivated. “When you send kids from a high school to an alternative ed., and ask them to do the same thing you’re setting them up for failure,” said Emery. “These kids are smart, and they want structure. They’ve always wanted that. Here we can give them what they need.”

Second, Emery points out that by 2025 most major universities will likely rely heavily on Webbased courses. “Even though we’re being innovative, we’re really giving them a chance to do what will be expected of them in the future,” he said. Relevant Academy utilizing programs like Skype and E-mail to allow students constant, but virtual, access to teachers, he said. And Emery believes the students are up to the challenge. “A lot of the students feel so much more comfortable communicating that way.”

Increased education helps keep infants safe CHARLOTTE — In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of establishing a safe sleep environment for infants, Governor Rick Snyder has declared September as Infant Safe Sleep Month in Michigan. Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, or SUID, is Michigan’s leading cause of preventable infant death. Michigan currently ranks 37th among states for overall infant mortality and the state’s infant mortality rate, 7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births, remains one of the highest in the nation. In 2009, 63 Michigan babies, or more than one child every week, died of accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed. “The same loving precautions caregivers practice while a baby is awake should be continued around the clock,” said Olga Dazzo, Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). “There are many preventative steps a parent can take to ensure that their child sleeps safe and sound.” In accordance with the American Academy of

LANSING — With school back in session and fall fast approaching, the American Red Cross is encouraging all eligible donors to roll up their sleeves to help save lives. Every year, students nationwide join the American Red Cross as blood donors and blood drive sponsors, all in an effort to help hospital patients in need. But, all donors, whether they are students or not, are encouraged to make an appointment to help save lives. “Students are a major force in building and maintaining the blood supply,” said Sharon Jaksa, CEO for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “But, we need the help of all eligible donors to be able meet the needs of hospital patients.” High schools and colleges sponsor about 19 percent of Red Cross blood drives in the coverage area of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Donors through these drives can range in age from 16 to 25, and give about 30 percent of blood collected in the parts of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio served by the Red Cross. In the United States, about 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood. However, less than five percent of the population actually makes an appointment to donate. As an added incentive for donors, everyone who comes out to donate blood or platelets in September and October has a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card. EATON RAPIDS - Eaton Rapids improved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in CAAC Gold boys’ soccer play with a somewhat deceiving 4-1 home win over Charlotte on Senior Night, Sept. 19. Deceiving because the game was much closer than the score would indicate, with two late Greyhound goals making a hard-fought, one-goal game look like a rout. Eaton Rapids head coach Matt Boersma said that his team struggled with an emotional Senior Night program, in which injured midfielder Shane Zimmer dribbled the ball on his home turf for the last time in a pre-arranged ceremonial kickoff. “We did okay,” Boersma said. “We had some good moments, but we struggled

with the emotions we had.” ER had the first clear scoring chance of the game on a corner kick, when a far-post header by Conner McCreery beat Charlotte keeper Jake Dornbos but was cleared off the line by defender Justin McConnell less than six minutes into the contest to keep it scoreless. The Oriole defense was caught off-guard on the first goal of the game, when a free kick at midfield by ER’s Sam Masteller sent Eric Freemire in clean on the Charlotte goal. His rightfooted shot banked off the post and in to make the score 1-0 with 21:18 left in the first half. Charlotte tied the game just under seven minutes into the second half, when Jake Brown threaded a perfect through ball to Dylan Bratchi, who calmly tucked the ball inside the left-hand

Kanon McVicker led ER with 34 rushing yards in the game. Greyhound head coach Bob Ribby said that, while the score of the game was similar to the one in their previous contest, a 54-0 loss at Waverly, the play on the field was not. “They definitely played better,” Ribby said. “The effort was much better, we had some kids who played well and put some smacks on some kids.”

After letting what looked like a winnable game against Waverly go horribly wrong, Ribby said that his team bounced back and actually played well against a much better opponent in the Bulldogs. “Mason is obviously bigger and faster than us, but the effort was much better,” he said. “The outcome was the same, but as we move forward from here, we know that our competition will be much closer

Babysitting classes set EATON RAPIDS — Eaton Rapids Medical Center (ERMC) welcomes babysitting instructor Charlene Hamilton from Cardio Pulmonary Resource Center, Inc. Classes will be held on Oct. 10, 17 and 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at ERMC. This course is intended to train young adults, between the ages of 11-14, to be responsible babysitters. The students will learn emergency procedures, discipline techniques, diapering and age-appropriate activities. Pediatric (child and infant) CPR, rescue breathing and the Heimlich

maneuver will also be covered, along with basic first aid skills needed while babysitting. Upon completion of the class, the student will receive a Pediatric CPR card, a Basic First Aid card and a Babysitting Course certificate. Students must attend all three classes to obtain certification. The cost of the class is $30 per person. OLIVET — Dustin Byrd, assistant professor of humanities at Olivet College, will present a lecture and discussion on events leading to the recent massacre in Norway Monday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. in the college’s Burrage Library Lecture Room. The event is free and open to the public. On July 22, 2011, rightwing extremist Anders Behring Breivik attacked the government sector of Oslo,

Norway with homemade bombs, resulting in eight deaths. Within hours of the explosions he arrived, disguised as a police officer, at a summer youth camp organized by the Norwegian Labour Party on Utoya island. He opened fire on the adolescent campers, reportedly killing 69 people, with the youngest victim being just 14-years-old. In his presentation, Byrd

will address questions such as: What drove Breivik to kill so many? What motivated his hatred for the Norwegian government, especially the Labour Party? What political and cultural beliefs inspired him to attack those he believed were responsible for “cultural Marxism” and “Islamification” of Scandinavia? Breivik penned a manifesto, titled “2083: A

European Declaration of Independence,” in which he laid out his claims against multiculturalism, political correctness, the political left and Muslims. Byrd will discuss the writings, as well as current trends within European and Western society that may have influenced Breivik before the massacre. For more information, call (269) 749-7141.
