District works to help at risk students succeed Mary Jo White mjwhite@lsj.com
EATON RAPIDS — Like every other district, Eaton Rapids Public Schools has its share of students at risk of failure. It’s a large chunk of the student population, too, between 20 and 30 percent, according to superintendent Bill DeFrance. Some students may have a reading or math glitch. Others may have already failed a grade and are convinced they’re not able to do the work. Still others may find it extraordinarily difficult, especially in high school, to fit into the normal classroom structure. Those students who aren’t proficient in two of the three core subjects (English, math and science) are automatically considered at risk. Luke Brown, one of the at risk coordinators at Eaton Rapids High School, believes absent or uninterested parents are part of why some kids aren’t doing well. “The biggest correlation to student success is parent involvement,” he said recently. Reaching at risk students and helping them succeed has always been important to caring teachers and administrators. But there’s a heightened sense of urgency these days with the state raising the bar on what constitutes proficiency on the MEAP tests and the
bleak job market for those without basic skills.
Tackling the issue Eaton Rapids has tackled the problem by hiring at-risk coordinators — Brown and Kim Hunt at the high school, Shana Bauerat the middle school and Shari Dudley, who will also reach out to the children at the VFW Home, at Greyhound Intermediate. There are more aides this year, too, at GIS, Lockwood and Greyhound Elementary. The positions are funded with federal dollars. These folks have a huge job description: to figure out which students are at risk, help them find services, work with their families and make referrals to community agencies when appropriate. They work closely with teachers and parents to “look for options” for these kids, sometimes for a class that delivers the material in a different way, according to DeFrance. For some students that option might be credit recovery at Greyhound Central or the new Virtual High School that provides content on line. This year there is afterschool tutoring at the high school for one hour, four days a week, with about 40 students participating one month into the school year. Two full-time teachers are the tutors.
Eaton Rapids High School freshman Dakota Mitchell (l) discusses algebra variables with teacher Derek Lounds after school Oct. 11 as part of the ZAP (Zeros Aren’t Permitted) program. Dakota says he likes catching up on homework at school, especially when there’s a chance to have help. MARY JO WHITE/LCN The district has also implemented the ZAP (Zeros Not Permitted) program for freshmen that immediately provides consequences for kids who don’t produce homework. Any students in freshman level classes who come in without homework must call home to report that they will be staying after school for 45 minutes
to complete the work.
Worthwhile effort Dakota Mitchell was plugging away at algebra homework on a recent Tuesday afternoon, discussing independent and dependent variables with teacher Derek Lounds. Dakota says it’s easier to do homework at school than at home, plus he likes

Drivers: pay attention to buses I was driving along one of the main roads in Eaton Rapids and was approaching a school bus. The bus was coming towards me and started to flash its overhead yellow lights. I just thought it meant to slow down. Yikes! Red lights started flashing and I came to a halt. The red stop sign comes out from the side of the bus. Slowly, a student got off the bus and crossed the street. Maybe I was not paying attention or maybe I was not settled into my driving for the school year. Eaton Rapids Public Schools has close to twothirds of its students ride the bus. On any given

numbers of at-risk students these days, though DeFrance agrees with Brown that there’s not enough quality face time between parents and children, the kind that happens during discussions at dinner time, for instance. Video games and TV might have something to do with it, too. “Electronic media has to a large part replaced silent reading,” DeFrance said. “(And) the percentage of kids who don’t know the
letters in their name (when they start school) has been on the rise for the last couple of years.” Always willing to entertain creative ideas, DeFrance has plans for Greyhound Intermediate clubs that will help parents increase their children’s literacy. New ideas are necessary because not every intervention works for every student, because, as he puts it, “everybody is wired differently.”

With help, that person passed all 10 classes for the next two terms. Brown says statistics have shown a drop in the failure rate between the 2009-10 school year and last year with the biggest decrease for freshmen — 13-percent. It’s not clear why there are large

EATON RAPIDS -- Kyle
Sawyer ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough, as Eaton Rapids fell to 2-6 with a 45-18 loss to Ionia on Oct. 14. Sawyer had scoring runs of 74 and 64 yards, and Mike Kitsmiller connected with Radian Miller for a 21-yard touchdown pass for the Greyhounds in the contest. That Kitsmiller TD pass to Miller gave Eaton Rapids a 12-6 lead, but the wheels came off after that. Ionia scored 26 unanswered points to take control of the game. Greyhound head coach Bob Ribby said that the scenario was all too familiar. “The same thing happens every week, we get off to a quick start,” Ribby said. “They battled back, and we have a hard time finishing games. That’s kind of been our MO the whole year.” The game was much closer that the score would suggest, as Eaton Rapids amassed 356 yards of total offense, 312 of them on the ground, in the contest. Ribby gave credit to Kitsmiller, the team’s backup quarterback, who has taken over the reins
of the offense from sophomore Alex Fast, whose season is over after undergoing knee surgery. “He’s not a bad quarterback,” Ribby said. “But it’s tough because you have a game plan in mind with one guy, and then you have to switch it.” The loss gave Eaton Rapids one more chance to post a three-win season, something that the program has not seen since 1997. Ribby said that the elusive third win is plenty of motivation for his team in their season finale at Owosso on Oct. 21. “We’re playing for pride, and playing for that third win,” Ribby said. “Wins haven’t come easy in the past, so you’re playing to build. We honestly thought that we’d have more wins that this, but things haven’t worked out the way that we’d planned.” But three wins would be a significant step forward over last season’s winless campaign. “Last year at this time, if someone had said that you’ll have three wins next year, we’d have taken that,” Ribby said. “This year, we let a couple of wins slip away and we’re looking at three wins differently. But in the overall scheme of things, that’s the next step.”

County parks remind of ban on hunting GRAND LEDGE — With the rapidly approaching hunting seasons, Eaton County Parks Director John Greenslit reminds guests at the nine county park sites that hunting is not allowed. While there is an abundance of deer in the wonderful habitat surrounding the park system, the trails remain a sanctuary for walking, hiking and nonmotorized vehicles. If there are questions over park boundaries, hunt-
and honor rules and regulations for public safety, with peer pressure within each hunting party to avoid trespassing on restricted public lands. The thrill of the great out-of-doors should not be dampened by avoidable accidents or confrontational incidents. Michigan hunters and guests deserve the safest natural resources experience as our favorite customers. Greenslit makes a final request to “look for our signs at trail entries, so that compliance and enjoyment can be maintained.” The rural wilderness of Eaton County’s Park system is very unique. Steps can prevent lead posioning Despite the continued presence of lead in the environment, lead poisoning is entirely preventable. This year’s NLPPW theme, “Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future,” underscores the importance of testing your home, testing your child, and learning how to prevent lead poisoning’s serious health effects. Here are some simple things you can do to help protect your family: 1. Get your home
tested. 2. Get your child tested. 3. Get the facts. Your local health department can provide you with helpful information about preventing childhood lead poisoning. Call (269) 945-9516, ext. 34 for the Barry County office in Hastings or (517) 541-2630 or (517) 485-7110 for the Eaton County office in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE — Nearly a quarter of a million children living in the United States have blood lead levels high enough to cause significant damage to their health, estimates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), based on data from a 2003-2004 national survey. Major sources of lead exposure among U.S. children are lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust found in deteriorating buildings.
