DELHI TWP. — A township ordinance change that would ban the discharge of bows and guns in certain areas is back on the plate for trustees. The ordinance amendment was shelved last spring so that the planning commission could focus on crafting an ordinance to regulate medical Marijuana dispensaries under a 180-day moratorium. Trustees also requested more research on the matter, as some residents became concerned they would not be able have target prac-

Principal gets a very close shave

Holt Midway Elementary Principal Josh Cooper gets his head shaved as part of an agreement with students if they reached targeted reading milestones. Cooper was shaved at an assembly on March 30, here by third grader Iylaina Kroft, after she helped Midway Elementary reach its goal for March, which was National Reading Month. Other students helped shave as well.

tice on their property. At its April 5 board meeting the Delhi Township Board of Trustees set May 17 as the day the amended ordinance will get a first reading. The reading will likely lead to a vote on the regulation, which would prohibit the discharge of weapons on most “urban” properties in the township. “What it comes down to is a matter of opinion between neighbors as to what is appropriate,” Township Community Development Director Tracy Miller said. “It has been an interesting discussion.” The discussion started in

November 2009, when township residents Gwendolyn Rytlewski and Brent Woodman wanted to know if there were any laws against target practice in residential neighborhoods. At the time the existing language only prohibited minors from discharging weapons, including sling shots, without the supervision of an adult. In April of last year the board approved first consideration of a draft with updates that included banning adults and any kind of discharge in several neighborhoods in the township’s

from becoming an eyesore. The program will also develop a fund to help the upkeep of existing neighborhoods, and it can all be done for a dollar. The Blight Prevention and Neighborhood Protection Program aims to protect the

vitality of the township’s housing stock. “We are very excited about this program,” Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrich said. “This is a win-win for everyone.”

Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized wo woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing Julie Pabst aids would be Audiologist programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing THEIR HEARING AIDS?

aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/ music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic, patient-centered

Delhi’s waste project a costly mistake

ver the last several meetings, the Delhi Board of Trustees has reviewed a $160,000 study on building a German produced greenhouse for our treated sewage. At the March 14 meeting, I opposed spending another $508,000 on final design costs for a sludge dewaterer and solar sludge dryer. On April 19, the board will hold a public hearing on becoming just the 16th unit of government in the nation to build greenhouses for our waste at a cost of $5.2 million, with half covered by the state and $2.6 million charged to monthly sewer bills. Why am I opposed to this project? First, this project was not identified as a priority for township tax dollars in either of the past two years’ strategy documents. Many other projects were. Second, this adds cost

revenues, lower interest earnings, and rising costs in Guest operating the current sewer system. column Third, the township is still paying more than $1 Derek million in engineering bills Bajema on a shelved project. phosphorous.” Better yet, our current practice helps conserve energy by displacing energyconsuming high cost synthetic fertilizer that would otherwise be applied to these farm fields. Another justification for building a greenhouse is that our class A biosolids may contain pharmaceuticals that Delhi Township residents may be flushing down their toilets. I believe the township can do a better job of communicating this concern and take advantage of better options. Many pharmacies have recently begun low cost drug drop-off programs. Ingham County has an established Clean Sweep program, allowing residents to drop off their expired or unused prescription drugs every Thursday, May to September, from 2-6 p.m. at the Ingham County

Health Department on Cedar Street. Meridian Township worked with the county to set up a pharmaceutical drop-off on April 30 at the Meridian Township Service Center from 9-2 p.m. Williamston is holding a drop-off on May 14. I spoke with the county and they’re willing to set up a drop-off date in Delhi Township this summer. This is a wonderful opportunity for intergovernmental cooperation to solve problems, preventing unused drugs and taxpayer dollars from unnecessary flushing.

greenhouse dried sludge for fuel but have no commitment from the University. Scientists have expressed concern that the burning of dried sewer sludge creates dangerous nitrous oxide due to the high nitrogen content and the ash byproduct is difficult to use because of its high metal content. In the past year, the township board has voted to place higher tax rates and higher sewer bills on residents. I’d like to invite you to the 8 p.m. April 19 public hearing on this project at the township hall. This is a time to celebrate our class A No market for sludge biosolids! Delhi pioneer family to be focus of history program The presentation is centered on their August 2010 trip to the New York Lansing Township and the rededication of the 1799 log cabin of Thomas North, a Revolutionary War veteran. Have you ever wondered how Lansing was named? Jane Bryce’s ancestor Joseph E. North (Thomas’s oldest son) suggested the name to commemorate the town where he was born. At the time of the cabin rededication last year, the Lansing Star paper interviewed Jane. “He was the first to go to Michigan,” Bryce said. “Then he talked his brother Henry into visiting him. On that visit Henry decided he would move to that area. Joseph

mentioned the name Lansing. Henry actually suggested the name Genessee, but that was already being used somewhere closer to Detroit, so Lansing won out for the name of the township. The city of Lansing was named after the township.” Jane Bryce is also a descendent of the Moon family who lived in the cabin on the grounds of Woldumar Nature Center. The Delta Township Administration Building is at 7710 W. Saginaw Hwy. in Delta Township, across from Horrocks. The talk is open to the public and is offered free of charge. more urban areas. But when it was time for second consideration at the April 20 meeting last year, a group of residents primarily from the Waverly Road area which were “residential” properties but “rural” in nature, thus would be banned under the proposed ordinance.

Trustee Jerry Ketchum said he has shot his bow and arrow for target practice in his backyard, which is considered an urban area, and would have voted no on the ordinance. But the proposal was postponed until now, as there has been continued interest from the public. “It has tapered off, but at one point we were receiving at least one phone

call or visit per day on the subject,” Miller said. Since then she compiled research on urban and rural townships that compared to Delhi and found that most of the urban townships had regulation while rural ones did not. Miller amended the ordinance to include properties north of the township’s “Urban Service Boundary”

which includes land designated on its future land use map as land that is planned for development and does or will use of its expanding sewer system. The “Urban Service Boundary” covers 68 percent of township land, including the backyard of Delhi Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrich. “I’m going to catch some flak for this,” Go-

odrich said. “But I’m probably going to vote yes on it.” Goodrich, who lives off Cedar Street, said he has shot a bow and arrow in his backyard and that his son is a gunsmith. “I hate to see the government get involved in this because I know many gun owners and hunters are responsible and cautious,” he said. “But the growth in the

township calls for this.” Miller told board members the change would remedy the concerns from Waverly Road residents as it would allow use in its area. The new ordinance does allow discharge of weapons with a certified instructor present and does not regulate area businesses like Total Firearms, which has a shooting range.

on Woodworth Street for $1 after there were no bids for it in 2009. The township rehabilitated the home and then sold it last year, making a $20,780 profit. “From what we understand, the township can’t just throw the profit into its own general fund,” Community Development Director Tracy Miller said. It must be used for public

reinvestment projects, she said, which led her to develop a township-wide program to protect the integrity of the township’s many homes. “We sold the Woodworth Street home quickly,” Miller said. “Within 48 hours we had three offers on it.” The Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has a web site that lists homes that are on the market.

If the home isn’t purchased, there is a “small window” of opportunity for the local government to buy the home for a buck, Miller said. “These are homes that have something wrong with them for whatever reason and weren’t purchased in the open market,” she said. Township trustee Derek Bajema said he likes the $1 deal, but does not like us-

ing the profits to buy more homes. “Let’s let the market decide what happens to these homes,” Bajema said. “We shouldn’t be creating more programs to make government bigger at this time.” Currently, there are three Holt homes for sale on the site — 2077 Phillps St., 4556 Grove Ave., and 2138 Dean Ave. Miller said the program

would help stave off a growing number of single-family homes that have been converted to rental properties in the township. Since 2009, 83 homes have been converted to rentals. “That’s an alarming number,” Miller said. “The presence of rentals in a concentrated area can have a blighting affect on a neighborhood.”

Blight: Program allows purchase of a home for $1 Continued from page 1

Through use of a federal Dollar Homes Initiative, a program that allows HUDpurchased homes to be sold to local governments after they go into foreclosure, the township can build a cash reserve for future home purchases or use it for neighborhood beautification. Under the program, the township purchased a home

LANSING — As warmer weather approaches and spring fills the air, American Red Cross officials are encouraging all eligible donors to make blood donation a part of their spring break plans. During January and February, severe winter weather across much of the U.S. forced hundreds of blood drives to cancel, resulting in a shortfall of more than 32,000 blood donations across the country, the lowest we have seen in a decade. This spring, the Red Cross urges those who are able to help refuel the blood supply to boost it back to sufficient levels. Particularly as the weather starts to warm and people become busy with spring activities, it is vital to refuel the blood supply now before spring fever hits, and accidents possibly increase. In an effort to help increase donor turnout, the Red Cross has partnered with Meijer to offer every person who comes out to donate, the chance to win free groceries ($250 value). In addition, everyone who attempts to donate in April will receive a free sample of Pacific Shaving Company’s shaving oil and a chance to win a Mother’s Day Out package ($125 value) at a local salon and spa.

Holt dancers perform in ‘Mother Earth’ recital The Greater Lansing Ballet Company’s performance of Mother Earth is just in time for celebration of Earth Day on Sunday, April 17th at 2 p.m. at Pattengill Auditorium at Pattengill Middle School located at 626 Marshall Street in Lansing. The full-length ballet was choreographed by the ballet company’s artistic director, Barbara Banasikowski Smith. The theme of the ballet is based on ecological issues and the need to protect “Mother Earth.” “The Mother Earth ballet is a classic and the GLBC is proud to showcase the talents of over 40 performers from our community,” said Barbara Banasikowski Smith, the founding artistic director of GLBC. “The ballet company works really hard to put on this terrific performance and we invite everyone to celebrate with us and enjoy this ballet.” The ballet tells the story of “Mother Earth”, danced by Mary Linda Dunn, GLBC principal dancer. The ballet Courtesy photo unfolds with a display of characters comprising Left to right: Holt’s Julia Kravchenko, Mary Linda Mother Earth. Dunn, as Mother Earth, and Holt’s Antonette Patino. Earth was beautiful. Her arms were like butterflies embracing her children. Her legs were like the lions and zebras running over her beautiful land. The birds were like her voice singing songs of peace. But over time humans tampered with the delicate systems of life. Mother Earth cried for her children. Then came hope. With hope people can heal the world. The butterfly’s dance is performed by the Junior Company. The apprentices perform the lions dance. The senior company performs as zebras and birds. The community dance is performed by GLBC principal dancers, Kailen Berry and Jim McEwan.

Local performers

Holt residents who perform in the ballet are Julia Kravchenko and Antonette Patino.

Julia Kravchenko, a fifth year Company member, is a fifth grade student at Washington Woods Elementary. Julia has performed in several of the GLBC productions. Julia performs in the opening of the ballet as a lion, in the lion’s dance being the legs of Mother Earth, as well as in the water dance in which the crabs are seen at the bottom of the vast ocean. Antonette Patino, a senior company member, is in the 11th grade in Holt High School. Antonette is featured in a solo as a zebra who is hunted. She performs as a bird, the voice of Mother Earth, in the opening of the ballet and in Mother Earth’s lament. She dances as a zebra in the spirited zebra dance. Antonette has performed in GLBC’s Nutcracker productions and with the company during the Regional Dance

America Mid-States festival in Anderson, Indiana and Detroit, Michigan. Following an audition, Antonette has been accepted into the Gelsey Kirkland’s summer ballet program. The ballet premiered in 2002 and choreographed by Barabara Banasikowski Smith. It was sponsored by a grant from ArtServe Michigan Creative Artist Grant in cooperation with Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, which Barbara Banasikowski Smith received to create this artistic endeavor. Ms. Banasikowski Smith was recognized by the City Council of Lansing with a resolution for the thought provoking choreography. Ms. Banasikowski Smith, an award-winning choreographer, has had excerpts of this choreography adjudicated and presented at Regional Dance America Mid-States Festival. Children’s Ballet Theater will perform in Holt High School HOLT — The Children’s Ballet Theatre of Michigan presents DECADES: Moving Moments at Holt High School, on Mother’s Day weekend, May 6, 7, and 8. This CBT performance begins with some recognizable historical moments from past decades. Popular music, visual media milestones, famous figures, trends, and important historical moments are interpreted through dance and put into motion. Inspirational, entertaining and thought provoking, these powerful, iconic images are brought to life by the choreographic artistry of Gregory M George. CBT’s spring performance also includes the one act ballet, Gaite Parisienne, which portrays many levels of society mingling in a Paris bistro. Bar workers, patrons, sales persons, musicians, and Can-Can dancers provide a high energy spectacle that fills the stage. With well developed, colorful characters and fast-paced, amusing social situations, this ballet entertains and delights. CBT is once again enthusiastically participating with The Children’s Miracle Network to provide the opportu-

nity for physically challenged children to perform alongside the company dancers. This performance marks the fourth successful collaboration between CBT and CMN. The CMN guest dancers bring infectious joy and enthusiasm to their performances with CBT, inspiring company members and audiences, alike. A first for the spring show is the choreographing of an entire dance designed specifically for the CMN participants. CBT is virtually one-of-a-kind in the nation - a volunteer-run, non-profit arts organization drawing dancers ages 8-18 for professionally directed and elaborately staged productions of contemporary and classical ballet. CBT is best known for its annual “Nutcracker” productions at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts over Thanksgiving weekend. Show times for DECADES: Moving Moments are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for students. Holt lacrosse team learning game by game By SEAN MERRIMAN smerriman@lsj.com

HOLT — Holt’s boys lacrosse team may have a few new faces on the roster this spring, but after completing the best season in team history last year, there should still be plenty of success associated with this up-andcoming program. The Rams’ season is already underway, and after four games, Mike Van Antwerp’s team is off to a 2-2

start this spring. After starting the year with a difficult 12-4 loss against Detroit Catholic Central, Holt bounced back and cruised to a 15-2 victory over Saline. Senior captain Skyler Dutkiewicz scored a gamehigh four goals and junior Stevie McKee added two goals in the victory. “They’ve both been stepping up and are both real offensive threats,” Van Antwerp said of Dutkiewicz and

McKee. “Those two guys are big for us offensively and have really been contributing a lot.” The Rams followed their first two games with a win against Rockford and a loss against East Grand Rapids. McKee scored five goals and Dutkiewicz chipped in three goals as Holt topped Rockford 14-9 back on March 29. That victory marked the first time that Holt has beaten Rockford in the team’s

history. “That was nice, that one felt really good,” Van Antwerp said of the victory over Rockford. “Our entire team came out strong and played very well. It was a nice win after we’ve taken some big loses to them in the past.”

The Rams will continue their grueling non-league schedule on Thursday when they travel to Portage Central, and then kick off their league schedule on April 16 when they host East Lansing. “We’re learning from mis-

takes we are making right now and that’s why we play those tough games in the beginning of the season,” Van Antwerp said. “We want to see what it is that we will need to focus on and work on for the long run.”

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Holt helped unload a truck of papers at their last drive. The club will also accept non-perishable food items for the food bank.

Kiwanis to collect paper HOLT — The members of the Kiwanis Club of Holt are hoping for better weather for their April paper drive than they experienced in January when it was cold and snowy. Regardless of the weather, however, they will be manning the paper drive trailer on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The trailer will again be located at the Holt Plaza, corner of Holt and Aurelius

Roads, behind Bank of America. The club will take all your newspapers and phone books, but can’t accept cardboard or magazines. Also being collected are new or gently used children’s books for donating to local programs. To help those families in the area that are struggling financially, the club will also accept nonperishable food items for the Holt Community Food Bank.

Proceeds from the paper drive help fund the club’s many community projects including the Easter Egg Hunt, Top Ten Dinner, and Golden Wedding Anniversary Dinner. The club also wants to announce that they will be holding their spring Chicken Bar B Que on Friday, May 6. Mark your calendars to take advantage of this delicious dinner. — Holt Kiwanis.

DIMONDALE — The Eaton Rapids and Dimondale Lions Clubs have joined together to raise monies to help support their communities.
