Holt honors its own

By WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com

HOLT — Diane Munshaw said throughout her 38 years of teaching kindergarten, she did a lot of learning as well. “I learned how to zip a lot of coats and find lost black snow pants,” Munshaw said. “But I also learned that I was in the right place.” A standing ovation was given for Munshaw and all six Holt community members for their contributions in life at the Holt Education Foundation Community Dinner on March 23. For the 17th year, the Holt Education Foundation hosted its fund raising dinner and silent auction to raise money to go toward mini-grants and scholarships for Holt Public Schools. Munshaw was one of three “Outstanding School Employees” that were honored. Munshaw taught at Dimondale Elementary for 20 years before helping open Horizon Elementary, Holt’s year-round school when it opened in 1993. Don Green is another employee that was honored. Green was hired as a classroom teacher at Midway Elementary in 1985,

The third employee honored was Lorenzo Hernandez, who has been a custodian at Holt since

1989. Hernandez was lauded for his attitude and work ethic, which is spread to the students everyday. The dinner also serves as a time to honor Holt High School “Outstanding Alumna” like Terri Edick, a 1974 graduate who after 35 years with the State of Michigan, is much loved and in demand instructor for Holt Community Education’s “Getting in Shape” classes. Alaiedon Township Supervisor Steve Lott jokingly said he suspects some of the residents were starting to enjoy less traffic down the road after the bridge was out. “But I understand the importance of emergency vehicles being able to access the road,” Lott said. The Delhi Township Fire Department, which provides service to Alaiedon Township residents, are relieved that construction has begun. “Knock on wood,” Delhi Township Asst. Fire Chief Pat Brown said. “It isn’t done yet. We’ve been fortunate that there hasn’t been a major problem with access over there in the last two years.”

HOLT — The Ingham County Road Commission has recently listed two Holt area construction projects on its updated construction list. One is the bridge on Willoughby Road, east of College Road. Work has started on reconstruction of the bridge, which closed in 2009 because of concern over its safety and condition, according to Ingham County Commissioner Steve Dougan. “The bridge was closed when it was determined in an engineering study that it would no longer support the weight of regular vehicle traffic and the risk of catastrophe was greater than even allowing only lightweight vehicles,” Dougan said. According to the road commission, the cost of the project will be $850,000. Dougan said when taking into consideration the time to schedule construc- Cedar Street tion and secure funding, the two-year wait is “actually smoother? Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized wo woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing Julie Pabst aids would be Audiologist programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing THEIR HEARING AIDS?

aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/ music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic, patient-centered

the project would have to be reasonable, he said. Resurfacing the four-lane street would cost $650,000, according to ICRC estimates. McFadyen said township officials would like to try and avoid another winter pounding on Cedar Street, which would probably create more car-rattling potholes. Over a year ago the township received input from people who live or own a business on the street as to the possibility of reducing lanes, but it was rejected. “We are definitely painting four lanes,” he said.

Former hoops stars shine By SEAN MERRIMAN

smerriman@lsj.com

After staring for the Rams’ boys basketball team for four years, Cole Darling just completed his freshman year at Wright State. The 6’7” forward played in 30 of the teams 33 games this season, and started in nine of them. He averaged 4.3 points and 3 rebounds per game in his freshman campaign. Darling was Wright States’ fifth leading scorer this year while playing just above 17

minutes per game. He helped lead the Raiders to a final record of 19-14 this season. Darling will likely be looked at to be a starter in his sophomore season, most likely at the small forward position. Also, former Ram Lexi Kelly appeared in 16 games this season for Kalamazoo Valley Community College. She scored six points and grabbed 12 rebounds while coming off the bench for KVCC. Kelly played forward this year, and will be looked at to play a larger role in her sophomore season with the team.

Drivers, road commissions face annual pothole problem By ALISHA GREEN

How to report

agreen3@lsj.com

As the weather continues to warm up in Michigan, drivers are seeing more of those infamous craters in the roads: potholes. Created by the expanding and contracting of roads as the weather warms and cools, potholes can cause damage to cars while also creating a bumpy ride. Lansing city officials are anticipating the number of potholes to be up this year over previous years, and some drivers are wondering how they can report these pesky road conditions. Drivers can report potholes on a growing number of websites, but don’t assume officials always will be checking those pages for information. “We would strongly encourage people to call to report potholes because as there are more places for people to complain about potholes, there is a lesser percentage chance of officials seeing those complaints,” said Chad Gamble, public service director for the city of Lansing. Many other officials in the tri-county area echo the suggestion to contact them directly by phone or email for the fastest response to potholes. For many local roads, that response might be a temporary fix for now. Blair Ballou, engineer-manager for the Eaton County Road Commission, said road crews generally are focused on the emergency repairs in early spring until the weather stabilizes, which means most pothole repairs are meant to be only temporary patches on the worst wheel-busters. The material for permanent fixes isn’t even commercially available until late April sometimes, Ballou said. In the meantime, road crews just have to work with what is available. Joe Brogan, a salesman at Brogan’s Tire and Auto Service in Lansing, has treated the damage done to cars by potholes and experienced their wrath himself. He lost a hubcap recently after driving through a pothole he couldn’t avoid. “It can definitely create some problems,” Brogan said about hitting potholes. “The tires themselves take damage. It can break the steel belts in there and … if it’s a bad enough pothole it can dent rims, it can knock the car out of alignment and it could loosen up some suspension components.” The cost of repairs for that kind of damage can total anywhere from $45 to $250 or more, Brogan estimates. “If you see a big pothole coming they say it’s best to just drive through it rather than swerve around it, because if you catch just the edge of it that can puncture the side wall of your tire,” Brogan said. “If you can avoid it easily, that’s the ideal thing, but if you need to really swerve sometimes that’s all you can do.” Drivers also are encouraged to drive more slowly around potholes and leave more distance between their car and the one in front of it to avoid larger accidents as a result of hitting a pothole, Gamble said.

The Second Amended Project Plan has been revised to include a solar drying option in the Sludge Drying/Dewatering Process. The hearing will be held at 8:00 p.m., April 19, 2011, at the Township Hall. Sludge Drying/Dewatering Process Upgrades to Dell Road and Pine Tree Lift Stations

Alternative No. 1 fails to provide for needed improvements necessary for proper operation of the Township’s sanitary sewer system. Alternative No. 2 is recommended as outlined in the original project plan. The proposed amendment to the project plan is in reference to updated technologies and there is no change in overall projects or project costs. The first phase of the project is about to begin construction and resulted in no increase in user charges. The second phase of the project, including sludge dewatering and drying is recommended at an estimated cost of $5,160,000.00. The project is anticipated to be financed through the State Revolving Fund with a low interest loan and principal forgiveness for 50% of the project costs. There is a proposed increase in user costs of $1.20 per month to complete the second phase of the improvements. For the third phase (upgrades to Dell Road and Pine Tree Lift Stations), an increase in the user costs of approximately $1.04 per month may be necessary depending on the timing of the construction. Phase III is not proposed to be implemented at this time. Written communications will be accepted up to 5:00 pm, April 19, 2011. All written communications shall be addressed to the Township Clerk’s Office at the above address.

Delhi Charter Township will provide reasonable auxiliary aids and services upon seven (7) calendar Delhi Public Services Department - Maintenance Di- days’ notice. NATIONWIDE COMPANY IN LANSING THIS WEEK PAYING CASH FOR GOLD, SILVER AND COINS. By David Morgan STAFF WRITER Been following the gold and silver market lately? Well if you have a jewelry box, a lock box full of gold or a coffee can full of old coins, you should be, according to Ohio Valley Refinery spokesperson John Miller. “The gold and silver markets have not been this strong for over 30 years” said Miller. Typically when the U.S. dollar is weak and the economy is flat, gold and silver markets soar. “That’s good news if you are sitting on a few gold necklaces or an old class ring” says Miller. Starting Tuesday at 9am and every day this week through Saturday, the Ohio Valley Refinery is setting up a satellite refinery right here in Lansing at the Courtyard Lansing. During their 5 day stay, anyone can bring gold, silver or platinum items and turn them in for immediate payment, explains John Miller. “Just about everybody has some amount of gold or silver just lying around collecting dust and this week anybody can sell theirs direct to our refinery. Typically selling direct to a refinery is reserved for larger wholesale customers like jewelry stores, pawn shops and laboratories” says Miller. “We are changing how business is done,” he explains “we want to do business with everybody so we took our business to the streets”. “Our teams visit various cities around the country hosting 5 day events and allowing the general public to take advantage of our services. “The turnout has been overwhelming” says Miller. “Usually each day is busier than the previous day. It seems once people come to us and sell something, they are so amazed what an old ring or gold coin is worth, they go home and start digging around for more and telling relatives, friends and neighbors. It’s like a feeding frenzy by the third day. People line up with everything from gold jewelry to sterling silver flatware sets to old coins. I think during this bad economy everybody can use

extra money, but most people say they are taking advantage of selling direct to our refinery because of the higher prices we pay”. During this special event, anyone is welcome to bring all types of gold, silver and platinum to the refinery and turn it in for instant payment. The types of items they will accept include all gold jewelry, gold coins, gold ounces, dental gold, old coins made before 1965 including silver dollars, halves, quarters and dimes, anything marked “sterling” including flatware sets, tea pots, silver bars, silver ounces and all industrial precious metals. What should you expect if you go to the event to sell your gold and/or silver? Just gather up all gold, silver and platinum in any form. If you are not sure if it’s gold or silver, bring it in and they will test it for free. When you arrive at the event you will be asked to fill out a simple registration card and will be issued a number. Seating will be available. When your number is called you will be escorted to a table where your items will be examined, tested and sorted. This only takes a few minutes, using their expertise and specialized equipment. Items will be
