DELHI TWP. — A federal grant totaling $682,502 has been awarded to the Delhi Township Fire Department. The grant will help cover the cost of a new full-time recruitment coordinator and pay for the training of paid on-call firefighters. Township Manager John Elsinga said the grant will help make the Delhi Township fire department safer because the grant create a “cadet” type of program that will help with retention. “We’ve had turnover in the paid on call positions,” he said. “So this will help make sure those firefighters that will be working with full time workers are fully trained and familiar with how the department operates.” The grant is through the Federal Emergency Management Association, or FEMA. It is called a SAFER grant and is intended to help emergency departments be adequately staffed and fully trained. It’s a four-year grant that will run until 2015. According to the grant application the recruitment and retention position will cost around $31,000 per year. “The full time coordinator will act as a recruiter in the schools,” Fire Chief Richard Royston said. “The person will also be a mentor, trainer and public relations person for the incoming cadets, while at the same time be available as a 5th person on shift during the daytime hours.” There is no government match needed for the grant, but Royston warned that because insurance costs may increase as 2015 arrives, the township may have to help pay some for the position’s final year. But there is no requirement for the township to continue the program once the grant period is over, Royston said. A highlight of the grant is that the cadets would be paid, at minimum wage, to take classes while training. Classes include fire fighting levels I and II, paramedics, and emergency management training.

‘Relay’ raises over $60k
| wkangas@lsj.com
espite the cool, damp, windy weather on June 24, the 2011 Relay For Life of Holt was a huge success, according to spokesperson, Gail Hayhoe. More than $60,000 was raised to fight cancer at the 24-hour event. Twenty-eight teams set up campsites around the Holt High School track and settled in for celebrating, remembering and fighting back against cancer. As is custom, team members took turns walking around the track and pledged their support for this cause. Opening ceremonies began with remarks fromevent chair Deb Rountree, then Daimon Hall, Andrew and Ryan Bean, Nathan Fox, and Matthew NobleHoard of Holt Cub Scout Pack 742 performed the flag ceremony and led everyone in the Pledge of Alliance. Nan Slocum sang the National Anthem followed by a prayer by Mike Anderson. Cancer survivor Patty Leonard and See RELAY, Page 5

Holt Kroger plans expansion WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com
HOLT — The Kroger in the Cedar Park Plaza will be substantially larger, if the township board approves its site plan later this month. The Delhi Charter Township Planning Commission has recommended approval of the plan, which calls for razing a complete leg of the current plaza and replacing it with an extra 14,000
square feet of store. When completed, the store will be almost 64,000 square feet in size, which is comparable to the Okemos and Lake Lansing Road locations, which feature decorative cement floors and different internal configurations. The plans will require final approval by the Delhi Township Board of Trustees at their July 19 meeting.
The store expanded with a fuel station in its parking lot a couple of years ago. Neighbor and close competitor L&L Food Center closed earlier this year after 30 years in Holt. The grocery store has been the anchor in the Cedar Park Plaza at the corner of Cedar Street and Willoughby Road for years. The leg of the plaza that is slated to be demolished has New Life Fitness and
The Redeemer Church of God, as well as a vacant section. The expansion would cover that area, and the rest of the leg would be a grassy median, according to plans. New Life Fitness would move to another location in the plaza pending the final approval of the plans. The fate of the church is unknown. See KROGER, Page 3

DELHI TWP. — A group
of residents bent on collecting signatures to force a vote on a township sludge drying project have until July 6 to file. Delhi Township Clerk Evan Hope said according to state law they must have signatures from 10 percent of registered voters. The previous date of June 30 was either a self-
imposed deadline or miscommunication, Hope said. The group has been collecting signatures since Memorial Day. The residents want a vote on the township trustees’ decision to go ahead with a $5.5 million project to improve the end product of its wastewater treatment plant. Trustees have already given the okay for preliminary engineering and were told by the state they could
get half of the $5.5 million reimbursed if they go ahead with the project. The project would produce a “greener” more efficient product but would cost residents an extra $14 per year on the sewer bill. Township officials, however, warned the board and residents that the project is slated to happen and the call for a vote could cost the township millions if the state deal isn’t taken advantage of this year.

Delhi Township Community Development Director Tracy Miller said if the plan is approved, the plaza portion of the building would be demolished in the fall and construction on the store’s expansion would begin in spring 2012. Miller said the sale to a new owner is contingent on Kroger’s expansion, so the effect the plaza’s tenants will be is not known.

caregiver Tori Bazner told their stories about battling cancer and giving support and care to a cancer patient, Hayhoe said. She said this year’s event featured the youngest cancer survivor at the Holt event. “Emilio Garcia Jr, or “Meo” was first diagnosed in February 2010 at 3. He is now 4 years old and a 1 1/2 year cancer survivor,” she said. His family and friends formed Meo’s Team and joined the event as a new team this year. Meo started the Survivor Lap by cutting the purple ribbon and leading the 75 cancer survivors attending Relay for Life for a lap around the track to the applause and support of the other relayers lining the track. For the first year, Sweet Sensations Ice Cream had their mobile unit on site and served ice cream for the entire 24 hours, Hayhoe said. “Even in the middle of the night, people lined up for a delicious cold treat,” she said. At the end, Sweet Sensations donated all the proceeds, over $500, to Relay For Life. It was part of what turned out to be another goal-busting night. The goal was $60,000 and more than that was raised for the American Cancer Society.
Lap, survivors and their caregivers were honored at a dinner reception, she said. “We then had by far the most sucessful silent auction to date,” Hayhoe said. At the end of the bidding, over $3,300 had been raised. As night fell, vver 1,100 luminaria bags lined the track either honoring a cancer survivor or remembering a loved one who had lost the battle against cancer. “Although it was too windy to light the luminaria candles, the luminaria ceremony was a touching tribute to those battling cancer, those in remission, and those lost to the disease as their names

six third and fourth grade Girl Scouts from Troop 30271, Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, collected 95 pounds of food and donated 150 items to Dimondale Food Pantry. A visit to the MidMichigan Food Bank provided the idea for their project. There they learned that hungry kids have difficulty focusing in school and pantries don’t always have enough food to meet the demand. The girls also assembled emergency weekend food packets for kids. They planned a campaign at Dimondale Elementary School to assist people in their town. The girls met with the school principal and sent home fliers with classmates asking for donations. To get a variety of food, they devised a theme such as Macaroni Monday and

During the project they weighed each can and box, and used their math skills to calculate the total pounds of food and the number of items collected. At the end of the experience the girls saw how their actions impacted the community.
“I liked that we collected so much food and I was glad we could help people spend less money on food that they need,” said Felicia Lemmon. Another participant said she thought it was cool because they were helping other kids her age and to see all the food at the pantry was good.

here’s an old stereotype that libraries are full of musty and dusty tomes. While this may be the case for some libraries that house historical collections, I think you’ll find that modern public libraries are much different. For example, did you know that we receive new library materials nearly every day at the Holt-Delhi Library? Yes, our staff has the daily pleasure of seeing brand new crisp and clean books arrive via CADL’s six-day-per week delivery system. This means that the library is ever-changing, constantly being updated with new books, movies, audiobooks, music, magazines and more. If you have a favorite reading genre or topic, such as historical

HOLT — Despite being heavily recruited by multiple in-state schools, Holt senior Colleen Lierman made the choice to forgo playing softball at the collegiate level. Therefore, she made sure that the final game of her softball career would be a memorable one. Lierman allowed just one run and struck out four in three innings of work while leading the South AllStar team to a 7-4 win over the North team in the opening game of Monday night’s Mid-Michigan All-Star doubleheader at Ranney Park. “It was the perfect ending,” said Lierman, who also added a hit and scored two runs in the victory. “Having that time off to rest must have really helped. That was possibly the best game I’ve pitched all year.” Lierman suffered an elbow injury midway through this season, which affected her velocity. However, Holt coach Kim Reichard said that her senior ace was at her best Monday
night. “She seemed like she had some serious heat on her ball tonight,” Reichard said. “I’m extremely happy to see her close out her career like that.” Bath’s Taylor Toune was the star for the Red team. The Bees’ senior pitcher went 3 for 3 at the plate, adding two RBIs. In the second game of the evening, it was another area pitcher who stole the show. Portland St. Patrick’s Allison Werner pitched three scoreless innings, striking out eight of the 11 hitters she faced, while leading the West to an 8-4 victory over the East. “To be able to pitch that good against a team loaded with good hitters really says a lot,” said St. Johns coach Barry Palmer, who coached the West on Monday. “Those small-school players don’t always get a ton of recognition, but give her credit she was great out there.” The West team trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth inning but put up seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth, which was

enough to secure the victory. Holt’s Katrina Majeske had an outstanding game from the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double and a solo home run. Bath’s Amanda Chaffee also had a big game, including a solo home of her own. “I only hit one home run this entire season, so obviously it felt pretty good
to close out the year with another one,” said Chaffee, who will play at Muskegon Community College next spring. “This game was all about coming out and getting the chance to play against the best players around, while having some fun. It’s exciting and sad at the same time, but obviously nice to go out on a great note.”
