Many people suffering from bulimia are able to hide the disorder from others but it is more difficult to keep it a secret from their dentists. Changes inside the mouth of a bulimic can be detected during the course of a routine dental examination. A good experience with dentistry is based on making the right choice in a family dentist. If

istoric photographs of Mason State Bank show horses tied to wagons, Ford Model Ts,

1940s-era automobiles and modern cars. “From the modes of transportation, you can trace the history of the bank,” said Timothy Gaylord, bank president and CEO.

Mason State Bank is celebrating its 125th year in business. It recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a rededication of its building at 322 S. Jefferson St. “They’ve always been part of the standing grace of our beautiful historic downtown,” said Marty Colburn, Mason city

administrator. “It’s vital to have sound financial institutions as part of your community.” Bob Warnke, assistant vice president of branch administration and marketing, attributes the bank’s longevity partly to Mason’s role as a local agricultural center. In 1886, John M.

Dresser organized the Farmers Bank of Mason. He was its first cashier — at that time, a principal executive officer of a bank — and remained so until 1893. As the city evolved from a heavily rural area to a more suburban community, the bank adapted as well.

In 1962, the board of directors decided to change the name to Mason State Bank to better reflect its business. The bank now has about $124 million in assets, $86 million in loans and $82 million in deposits. It employs more than See BANK, Page 8

40 people at four branches in Mason, Leslie and East Lansing. Mason State Bank

is publicly traded and listed on the OTC Bulletin Board. Mason-based Capital Directions Inc. is the holding company in charge of the bank along with Lakeside Insurance Services Inc.

Looking to grow Most of the bank’s business comes from single-family home mortgages, followed by commercial real estate. “We make loans to our neighbors, and we have to do it right because we see them face to face,” Gaylord said. The bank is looking to grow its commercial loans in an effort to diversify its lending, said

Tom Peterson, senior vice president. It’s also considering adding mobile banking, which would be a long way from the bank’s humble start as a farmer’s financial institution.

Community-minded The bank is involved in the local community, sponsoring the Mason State Bank 5K run as well as supporting United Way

and shows for the city’s summer concert series. It’s also a charter member of the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce. “Mason State Bank is a stalwart in our community,” said Doug Klein, executive director of the chamber. “They have not only been in business for 125 years, but they’ve been at the same location ... in downtown Mason and we

believe that contributes greatly to the stability of our downtown business district.” Mason State Bank in downtown Mason has “always been part of the standing grace of our beautiful historic downtown,” said Marty Colburn, Mason city administrator. “It’s vital to have sound financial institutions as part of your community.”

HOLT — The Holt Schools bus driver who drove into a garage in early June wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time, which contributed to the crash, according to the traffic crash report. An Ingham County Sheriff’s Office deputy who reviewed the on-board

video tape reported that Eileen Marie Delaney was not wearing a safety belt and fell from the seat into the entrance well of the bus while making a left turn from Delhi Street Northeast onto Holt Road. Delaney was ticketed for not wearing her seat belt, the crash report obtained through the Freedom of Information Act shows. “I’m thankful nobody

was hurt,” Delaney said. No students were on the bus at the time of the crash, and Delaney suffered minor injuries from the accident. The 2:15 p.m. June 2 accident left a large hole in a garage owned by Tim Monroe. Inside the garage was a 1953 antique wrecker that was damaged and a utility trailer that police said was a complete loss.

Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, wo and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing THEIR HEARING AIDS?

aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/ music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic, patient-centered

Dimondale man testifies on flood insurance burden EATON CO. - State Rep. Deb Shaughnessy, R-Charlotte, recently invited two Eaton County residents to testify before the Michigan House Insurance Committee about the ineffectiveness and high cost of federal flood insurance. Shaughnessy, who is vice chair of the panel, also expressed her concerns regarding the impact flood insurance premiums have on local residents and municipalities. “I am very concerned about how the requirement to have flood insurance affects people in the area,” Shaughnessy said to the panel. “I have been to several local government units that have been asked to opt into this as well. This issue impacts many residents in Eaton County, and it takes a lot of money to fight it.” At the June 9 hearing, state Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, advo-

cated making significant reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program with Congresswoman Candice Miller. Eaton County residents Keith Haley and Albert Surink testified at the hearing, criticizing the criteria used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to put their homes into the flood zone. The designation required them to purchase federal flood insurance. “In November 2010 my mortgage company said I had to have flood insurance,” Haley said. “FEMA redrew the lines and my mortgage company said I was in the flood plain.” The flood insurance policy costs the Bellevue resident $800, or about $66 a month. He explained flood insurance is an unaffordable luxury considering the economic circumstances under which he and his wife live.

Call the professionals for all your heating and cooling needs.

“That might not sound like much, but my wife and I are surviving on Social Security,” Haley noted. “And I have a small state pension.” As a result, Haley has cut his telephone service and has reduced his bills for trash and electricity, he told the panel. Surink, of Dimondale, told the committee he had been fighting the flood-plain designation for six years without success. “There is nothing in this program that works,” Surink said. “If a structure has water frontage, it is required to have flood insurance.” Surink explained to the committee that his property was designated as a flood plain by officials who used a hand-drawn map of his property overlaid by a satellite photograph of his land. Shaughnessy supports House Resolution 62, intro-

duced by Forlini, which urges Congress to authorize states to work together in providing flood insurance as they deem appropriate and encourage government transparency.

Forlini’s resolution acknowledges Miller’s bill, H.R. 435, to eliminate the National Flood Insurance Program in 2013, and petitions Congress to make significant reforms. The

Insurance Committee recommended the resolution to the full House, which adopted the resolution on June 21. - From the office of Deb Shaughnessy

In attempting to modernize our wastewater treatment plant, Delhi Township officials have shown a great deal of foresight. Personally, I have tired of the tea party mentality that promotes the idea that government that is proactive is bad government. Furthermore, I am discouraged at the

willingness of many individuals to misrepresent the facts in order to get what they want. That isn’t patriotism, it’s dishonesty. We need to get past the notion that all government action is bad and wasteful. We need to pay attention to facts and stop being misled by simple-minded arguments based on half-truths.

He figures he and fellow volunteers have provided reliable bike transportation for more than 600 people over the last two years, between 20 and 40 on a summer weekend. One of them is Connie Zheng, a recent MSU grad who was getting a bike July 9 for her son Andy, 13, and couldn’t say enough good things about Egan. “Fixing bikes is second nature to Mike and he’s very patient,” said Zheng, who rides a Share-aBike bicycle herself. “This (program) really saved our lives.” Egan doesn’t listen very hard to the accolades; he’s too busy fixing the next bike on his battered white bike stand set up next to his van. Other volunteers sometimes come over to see if he has a tool they can borrow - and usually he does. “I’ve always been a fledgling mechanic and involved in several bike clubs around town,” said Egan, who works for Hasselbring-Clark. He’s a good listener, too, paying attention to what a “customer” needs and looking through the program’s inventory to find it. On July 9, for instance, Egan

East Lansing resident Ronald Fowler, a retiree from the Grand River GM plant, spends many summer Saturday mornings fixing up bikes for the Share-a-Ride program that provides much needed transportation throughout the Lansing area. Visiting July 9 is his 23-year-old daughter, Sasha, who works at the Oak Park YMCA.

took Liz Owczarzak, who has some back issues, through the bikes hanging in one of the red trailers until they found the right one, which he then adjusted to make sure it fit her comfortably. A spontaneous warm handshake was her thank you to Egan. “This bike will be great for riding downtown,” said Owczarzak, an LCC student in the geographical information system program. “It will also be helpful in getting to doctors’ appointments.” East Lansing resident and GM retiree Ronald Fowler was another volunteer who worked steadily at his own bike stand throughout the morning. So were

tenants graduate and many, many homeowners. “People know we’re here,” Egan said. The program works simply and easily, just like a well-oiled bike shifts smoothly from gear to gear. Each person who wants a bike must bring a letter from a human services agency, a religious organization or an employer that vouches for their need. It’s a first-come, first served system, with each “customer” assigned a volunteer mechanic. Some are new to the United States and uncomfortable with English, but somehow they, too, find the bikes they need and ride

Ron Zeeb, Dave Mead and Kyle Freund, all from Lansing. Doug Taylor from Holt, who used to be the president of UAW local 602, and his grandson Jonathan Olson, showed up with a trailer full of donated bikes. With lots of willing hands, they were unloaded in a few minutes. Dick Janson, who lives in Perry and worked as a custom software designer for over 20 years, kept the paperwork flowing. Bikes come from everywhere: East Lansing’s Project Pride recycling day, the police department, the St. Vincent DePaul store in Lansing, landlords who inherit student bikes when their

All bikes are licensed with the East Lansing Police Department and their owners offered a brand-new helmet. On July 9, 7-year-old Zach Rinehart almost got a red bike in his size that needed quite a bit of work. Searching through the rows of bikes, though, he came upon a shiny silver number that seemed made for him. He got a cool blue helmet, too, and hopefully a safety lesson for the rest of his bike-riding days.

Carlos Berroa

HOLT — After making it to the semifinal round of last weekend’s 34th Annual Spartan Classic, the East Lansing Post 205 baseball team stayed hot with two victories over the Central Michigan Stars last Tuesday. The team is enjoying an abundance of success out on the diamond this summer, and a large part of that has to do with the addition of two former

Holt High graduates, Carlos Berroa and Joey Myers. Both players played large roles in the team’s success at the Spartan Classic. Berroa, who starts at shortstop at bats third in the lineup, went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the team’s semifinal loss to Gladwin. “He’s really stable out there,” Post 205 coach Bob Gast said of Berroa. “He’s just

a real good player who always comes to play, which is always nice to see.” Berroa’s former Holt High teammate, Joey Myers, rotates at first base and hits in the middle of the lineup as well. While Gast described Berroa as a “quiet leader,” Myers is anything but that. “He’s very vocal and loves to keep the guys up on their feet,” Gast said of Myers.

“He’s a good ball player, and he really seems to enjoy playing with this team and keeping everyone loose.” Berroa, Myers and the rest of the Post 205 team were scheduled to play in the USSSA Tournament this weekend at Albion College. In the game against the Central Michigan Stars, Nick Jump of Williamston had four hits and three RBI’s in a 20-11

victory in game one.The second game was dominated by pitching as Portland’s Travis Thomas threw a complete game shutout, improving his record to 4-0 on the mound this season. They will then close out the regular season with two games against Portland on Tuesday and begin the Palomino Regional Tournament that weekend.

MSHSAA honors Holt’s Athletic Director, Rick Schmidt Winner of award for athletic leadership EAST LANSING – Holt athletic director Rick Schmidt has been honored with the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Allen W.
