Sand mining request stalled for water study Will Kangas

A farmer working his field on a tractor was enough to spark a wheat field fire in dry conditions on July 17 in Alaiedon Township. Delhi Township firefighters worked at the scene on Every Road, between Button and Jolly Road, with help from Meridian Township Williamston Fire Department and traffic help from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department. Delhi Township Asst. Fire Chief Pat Brown said there were no injuries.

DELHI TWP. — Township planners postponed plan approval for a sand-mining operation to allow for a study of wetlands recently. At its July 25 meeting, the Delhi Township Planning Commission requested Sunrise Aggregates of Dansville conduct a wetlands study before seeking approval for a special permit to excavate in the township. The company is planning to mine sand on property about 150 feet east of Cedar Lake, according to Delhi Township Community Development Coordinator Tracy Miller. The company wants to mine sand for at least 10 years on about 130 acres of over 400 acres of privately-owned land. According to the plan, the deepest the dig will go is 40 feet, and the company will use berms to quiet noise in the surrounding area.

Trucks will access College Road through an existing two-track road, then will turn north to Holt Road and use U.S. 127 for delivery. Once excavation is complete, the company suggested the land be used for a mixture of homes and office space surrounding two man-made lakes as a result of mining. Miller said there is no doubt there are wetlands in the area, and the company needs to come up with a plan to work around it before approval. The commission approved WielandDavco’s 40,000-square-foot industrial use building at 3201 Pine Tree Road near the Jolly and Dunckel Road business area. The commission also approved a final site plan from Kroger to expand its store to 46,000 square feet at the Cedar Park Plaza. One third of the plaza will be razed this winter to make room for the expansion, which is slated for spring construction.

Willoughby bridge work is complete Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com

ALAIEDON TWP. – A bridge that served as an important connection to the east side of the township has been repaired after being closed for two years. The bridge over Sycamore Creek at Willoughby Road was closed in 2009 due to support column deterioration. The bridge was deemed unsafe to handle weight

and was closed, then construction started this March once funds became available. “This is good news for folks on the east side of the bridge as they depend upon Delhi Township for fire and ambulance service,” Ingham County Commissioner Steve Dougan said. Delhi Township emergency personnel would have to detour farther north to Jolly or south to Holt Road to get to the east

side. Delhi Township Asst. Fire Chief Pat Brown said at the time of construction that he was happy nothing serious had happened that would require a faster response time. The Ingham County Road Commission was able to complete this project at a cost of $715,000, with funding from the state and federally-funded Local Bridge Program. See BRIDGE, Page 2

Long-time local chiropractic company moves Will Kangas

| wkangas@lsj.com

HOLT — After 21 years at their Holt Road location, Dr. Walter Kittle and the staff of Chiro-Technology Spinal Health center have moved to a new, more spacious office. Gone is the familiar red flashing sign in front of their old clinic at 4064 East Holt Road. Kittle has served the Holt community for over 26 years. He founded Chiro-Technology in 1982 and relocated to Holt in 1985. “I am so glad that we moved to the Holt community,” Kittle said. “It’s a great place to live and raise a family.” The first Chiro-Technology Spinal Health Care Center in Holt was located on Aurelius Road next to where the Family Video is now located. In need of more room, ChiroTechnology moved to 4064 East

Holt Road in 1990, and from there served the Holt community for over 21 years. Now Chiro-Technology has moved to a spacious 3,000-squarefoot plus facility at 2385 Delhi Commerce Drive, located behind McDonald’s near the old L& L Shop-Rite. “This is my dream office,” Kittle said. “It has everything I have always wanted for my patients and staff.” Today, Chiro-Technology is comprised of a 10-member staff, including two Doctors of Chiropractic and four massage therapists. Services include chiropractic, massage, exercise rehabilitation, nutrition analysis and sales, plus sports enhancement. With the additional room, they are now adding a third chiropractor and also will be adding weightloss and health coaching to their

practice, Kittle said. Chiro-Technology highlights include: • First clinic in Michigan certified to use the breakthrough COX instrument for the non-surgical repair of herniated (slipped) discs. • One of the very first clinics in Michigan to introduce massage therapy as an integral part of the chiropractic practice in 1980. • First clinic in Michigan to offer the Zyto computerized nutrition scanner. • First clinic in the Lansing area to use the computerized (in motion) foot scanner to evaluate the walking/running cycle. • One of the first clinics in Michigan to offer exercise rehabilitation in a chiropractic setting. In celebration, Chiro-Technology will be hosting a grand opening/open house in August.

NEWS IN BRIEF Class Meet, Greet will be Aug. 18 The Holt High School classes of 1950, 1951 & 1952 will “Meet & Greet” at noon with a potluck at 1 p.m at the Veteran’s Park, 2074 N. Aurelius Rd., on August 18. Those attending should bring a dish to pass, table service and drinks (alcohol not allowed). Questions can go to Betty Sparkes Guile at (517) 699-8114, or email gardenguile@comcast.net, Dorothy Wade Walter at (517) 699-8562, Art Hartig at (517) 694-7392, email AFH28MLH@aol.com.

needed: Markers, pencils, single subject notebooks, gel pens, colored pencils, lots of folders, pencil sharpeners, safety scissors, protractors, notebook paper, rulers, erasers, pencil bags and crayons. The committee also welcome donations of backpacks. The public may drop items off during the day to Sweet Sensations, 1960 Cedar Street.

Grovenburg UMC marks 125 years Grovenburg United Methodist Church is celebrating its 125th Anniversary during the 11 a.m. worship service on August 7. The church’s official anniversary date is August 8, which marks the time the first service was held in the newly constructed church building.

Girl golfers invited to tryouts Girls who play golf and attend Holt High School may consider being on the

high school golf team. Golf is a skill that can be used the rest of your life. All girls interested in being on the high school golf team should meet at Eldorado golf course on August 10 at 8:30 am. All players should have a sports physical and be prepared to play at 9:06 a.m. that morning. Further questions can be addressed to Coach Doug Harkema at dharkema@hpsk12.net.

School board will hold retreat The Board of Education of Holt Public Schools will meet on August 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Frederik Meijer Gardens Hauenstein Conference Room, 1000 E. Beltline, Grand Rapids, for its annual Board-Administrative Workshop. The Board will be reviewing goals and objectives for the 2011-12 school year, and will not be taking official action on any district matters at this workshop.

The Eaton Rapids and Dimondale Lions would like to thank everyone who participated (golfers), worked and sponsored/contributed to their 9th Annual Golf Outing at El Dorado Golf Course in Mason on Saturday, July 16. Our event was very successful with an increase in teams over last year (99 golfers). The monies raised will be used in our respective communities to help others less fortunate, be it for hunger, handicapped ramps, glasses, hearing aids, the 4th of July Parade, the Memorial Day Parade, playground equipment, parks and any other local emergencies. Noreen Boes, Holt

Bridge Continued from Page 1

Dougan said the nearly two-year wait for the bridge repair was “sadly” fast for this kind of project. “Bridge funding is more competitive than road funding,” Dougan said. Dougan also said it was better to replace the bridge entirely than place weight restrictions on it like other bridges in the county. He said in the years

he has been commissioner, this is the fifth bridge replacement over Sycamore Creek, counting bridges at College Road, Pine Tree Road, Harper Road and Howell Road. “This is also good news for the Mason school bus drivers who couldn’t make a turnaround,” Dougan said. The bridge is east of College Road, which is the border between Delhi and Alaiedon townships, and is one of the east-west roads that passes under U.S. 127 and connects with Hagadorn Road.

Energetic dancers to perform OKEMOS — In its start-up

season, the Community Dance Project involved four choreographers and eight dancers. Now, six years later, 16 choreographers and 42 dancers will bring their infectious energy to five shows, four dates and three locations, with two different dance programs. And dance fans can afford to attend them all because zero is still the cost of admission — although donations are welcome. Program A is comprised of dances with smaller casts (1-5 dancers) and includes works by Clara Martinez, a dance major at Ohio State University; Okemos High School junior Grace French and Lea-Janell Mitchell, who this fall will attend the prestigious Hartt Conservatory for Dance. Program B offers works with at least five dancers, up to the largest dance.

Among the pieces: Firsttime choreographer Katherine McKinney fuses hip-hop, modern and classical styles of dance, set to the unlikely musical pairing of Eminem and Leanne Womak. Professional choreographer Tracy Holtzer launches Everybody Dance Now, with 19 dancers performing to music of Michael Buble’ and J-Lo. Program A’s smaller cast fits well at (SCENE) MetroSpace in East Lansing on Friday, Aug. 5, with backto-back shows at 7 and 8 p.m. The next day at 2 p.m., Program B fills a large outdoor stage at the Lansing JazzFest in Old Town (details at www.jazz lansing.com). CDP performs under the direction of Missy Lilje, with the support of Happendance and Lansing Community College. Its mission is to give beginning dancers and choreographers a

pleted the challenge course as both individuals and teams, he said. Ball and Butcher took fourth place in the team event. The Firefighter Combat Challenge is presented annually around the United States and Canada in an effort to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing full firefighter protective gear, pairs of competitors race head-tohead as they simulate the physical demands of reallife firefighting. This consists of a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting hose, chopping, dragging hoses and

rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. “victim” as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock. The regional Challenge events end with a National Championship which is broadcast on VERSUS network. “The fire department is extremely proud of our personnel and the determination that they have shown in preparing themselves for this event,” Royston said. “Just by participating in this event, it shows to our community their love of their profession and their determination to excel among those that are in the profession. We congratulate them for their participation in this extremely difficult event.”

Music returns to the grandstand this year Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com

MASON – There will be a bunch of new entertainment at the Ingham County Fair this year, according to fair officials, along with the usual brand of fun that the event has been bringing for 157 years. Ingham County Fair Interim Executive Director Carol Carlson said musical acts will return to the grandstand, including alternative rockers “Sick Puppies” on Aug. 3, local band “Root Doctor” on Aug. 4 and country duo “Steel Magnolia” on Aug. 5, which will be “Country Music” night. “Both are highly regarded up and coming musical acts,” Carlson said. “They are inexpensive as well, which helps.” Years ago fair officials quit bringing in musical acts to the grandstand because they were considered too cost-prohibitive. But Carlson said county commissioners told her the community wanted to bring back the music, and so a

new pricing schedule was created to appease both regular fair goers and diehard fans of the groups. Carlson said a general admission seat at the concerts are open to everyone who pays the fair’s overall gate price, which is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Those that want to get closer to the bands can pay an extra $5 for a reserved seat. Carlson said this way everyone who comes to the fair can see the bands for the price of admission to the fair instead of having to pay extra.

Sick Puppies

Steel Magnolia

“Sick Puppies” are a indie rock band from Australia that came into prominence in 2006 when there song “All the Same” reached number eight on the U.S. Modern Rock chart and is also featured on the video for the “Free Hugs Campaign” video which won YouTube video of the year in 2006. They followed up their debut with the single “My

Steel Magnolia is an American country music duo that won season two of the television talent show Can You Duet. The duo consists of Meghan Linsey and her fiance, Joshua Scott Jones. After becoming the top winner on the show, the duo released its debut single “Keep On Lovin’ You“ in August 2009, which was a Top 10 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs

Root Doctor “Root Doctor” is a popular Lansing band that plays a diverse mix of classic soul and R&B, alongside traditional blues and inspired original material. Root Doctor’s latest CD, Change Our Ways, was nominated for a Blues Music Award (formerly the WC Handy Awards) for Soul/Blues Album Of The Year in 2007.

chart. Carlson said local country band “Bullwhip” will be opening for Steel Magnolia. “They are so excited,” she said. “They can’t believe they are opening for such a great talent.” Carlson said also new this year will be the Potter Park Zoo’s Exotic Animals exhibit. The zoo used to be a city park, but changed

to an Ingham County Park a few years ago. Because of this special relationship with the county, the zoo will be offering a “hands-on” exotic animal exhibit.

Mark Maze She said entertainer Mark Maze will be “roaming the midway” and entertaining at the Shirley Clark Pavilion. Maze walks around and does magic

tricks, hypnosis and other fun stuff, she said. And as usual, the fair will have Erbeck Brothers rides and concessions, and Meijer Kids Day will be Aug. 2 – kids can get in free with a paid adult admission. Carlson said the idea was to have events for everyone, and she said she hopes people will come out to have a fun day at the fair.

Holt multi-sport star inducted into Hall of Fame Denny Schwarz dschwarz@lsj.com

HOLT – Bob Tuttle lettered four times in three sports at Holt High School and then played two different sports after his prep career was over. The athletic prowess Tuttle displayed is why he’s one of the seven inductees in this year’s Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame class, which took place last Thurday at the Lansing Center. “I got a real nice letter telling me that I was going into the Greater Lansing Hall of Fame,” Tuttle said. “It’s an honor.” Tuttle starred for the Rams from 1954-57 and was a 12-time letterwinner with four letters

each in football, basketball and baseball. The one thing missing for Tuttle in four tremendous years of varsity sports was a state title. The Rams football team had their best season while Tuttle was on the roster during his senior season Tuttle in 1957, when Holt’s only two losses came to Comstock Park and Everett. In basketball, Tuttle got a little closer to an elusive state title, but the semifinal round was as far as the Rams got.

Tuttle went on to Michigan State as a halfback, but his days playing football came to an unexpected close as an opportunity in another sport he once played came back to the forefront. “I got banged up,” Tuttle said of his football career with the Spartans. “Then I signed to play baseball with the (Detroit) Tigers.” In an incredible span of athletic ability starting in early 1957, Tuttle went from winning his fourth letter on the Holt varsity basketball team to playing football at a Big Ten program to signing a professional contract with the Tigers in 1959. “When I was at school to play football, I enjoyed that very much, and when I went to play

baseball I did a lot of traveling and I enjoyed that too,” Tuttle said. “I enjoyed all the sports.” He made his minor league debut a decade after fellow Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame 2011 class inductee and former Vermontville High School pitcher Ken Beardslee made his with the Newark Yankees in 1949. Tuttle never made it to the Tigers’ Major League club, but played with the Decatur Commodores in the defunct Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League, which was also called the “Three-I League”. The Decatur club would relocate to Wausau, Wisc. and later back to Illinois where they became the Kane County Cougars in the Midwest League.

Tuttle also played for the Montgomery Rebels in the Alabama-Florida League. Tuttle was under contract for six years with the Tigers organization before being released in 1965. Much like his football career at MSU, injuries slowed him down again. This time, it was for good. “I got banged up with a knee surgery and I couldn’t run anymore and that ended my career playing baseball,” Tuttle said. “It was hard because I couldn’t play and couldn’t participate and when you’re banged up and can’t walk it’s kind of hard to take.” Tuttle moved on from the game and got into the car business once he was out of baseball. He now lives in Houghton Lake.

Ram Steward signs with BGSU SEAN MERRIMAN smerriman@lsj.com

Holt standout has made a big-time college commitment. Senior Ben Steward, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive /defensive lineman, has verbally committed to play football at Bowling Green State University. Steward is a three-year

starter for the Rams and has played a large role in paving the way for one of the top rushing attacks in the Mid-Michigan area over the past couple of years. “The coaches are great and the facilitates are really nice there,” he said. “Everything just fit.” Steward chose Bowling Green while also receiving offers from Mid-American

Conference schools: Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Central Michigan. He played both ways in high school, but will likely be used primarily as an offensive lineman at Bowling Green. “I think he really did a great job at weighing the positives and negatives at each school,” Slamer said of

Steward. “We tell our guyssometimes you are just going to get a feeling about where you are because football is football. I think that was a big deciding factor for him at Bowling Green.” Steward plans to study excise science in college. “I really liked their academics,” he said. “They had what I wanted to study and it’s really good there.”
