Trustees approve vehicle purchase Will Kangas

| wkangas@lsj.com

HOLT — After some requested research, the Delhi Township Board of Trustees approved the purchase of four new vehicles for the department of public works at its last meeting. At the July 19 meeting, the board voted 4-3 to postpone the purchase of new trucks for the department. Board members who voted for the postponement felt that the department should research used vehicles as a possible way to contain costs. Department of Public Services Director Sandra Diorka told the board at the time that the new vehicles would be purchased through a state program that gives governmental entities a break on price. “Our research proved that was true,” Diorka said. “The state program provides new vehicles at very reasonable prices. The used vehicle comparison showed similar costs but for older models.” The department budgets for the new vehicles, in this case four trucks that would cost $95,000. Diorka said a search for used trucks didn’t turn up a substantial difference in price for the trucks, which have to be equipped for special use. “The state program is really a great thing in that it buys thousands of vehicles at once and passes on the savings to governments. The trucks for which the new vehicles will replace will be sold at auction. The department, which uses the vehicles for emergency repairs like the recent flooding, hadn’t purchased a new vehicle in six years. “I would hate to call someone to fix a broken sewer line and be told that their truck won’t start,” Township Manager John Elsinga said. The board approved the purchase 6-1, with Trustee Derek Bajema voting against it.

New 18-hole disc golf course is open at Burchfield Park Will Kangas

| wkangas@lsj.com

DELHI TOWNSHIP — Longtime disc golfer Damian Redman wanted to make an impressive course and unveiled it at Burchfield Park on Aug. 10. The park hosted the grand opening of the 18-hole course, complete with a ribbon-cutting and barbecue, even though its been open for a couple months and golfers have been raving about its features on disc golf websites. Redman, of Grand Ledge, said he wanted to design a course from his experiences competing in tournaments around the country and was happy to do it when Ingham County Parks representatives approached him. “The idea was to make a championship course that is flexible enough for all skill levels,” he said. The course, which spans about 100 acres, has both “short” and “long” holes (called baskets) and tees, which enables golfers to customize how difficult they want to make it for themselves. Redman, an MSU landscape architecture graduate, said he wants to design disc golf courses as a career. Ingham County Parks and Recreation Director Willis Bennett said Burchfield Park was the best location because of the amount of space needed. “Plus, if people come to play the course they will also be able to see the many other fun things to do at the park,” Bennett said. Construction started in late summer last year, he said. The cost to construct the course came in under budget at just over $20,000, he said. “We will be able to make up the cost quickly because of the user fees,”

Ingham County Commissioner Vince Dragonetti, course designer Damian Redman and Ingham County Parks and Recreation Commission Chair Pam Weil cut the ribbon at the official grand opening of the new disc golf course. WILL KANGAS | LCN he said. A day pass for the course costs $4, with children under 12 playing free with an adult. Redman said the most unique part of the course is probably “the wall.” Hole No. 2 greets golfers with a 10-foot wall in front of them. The course has sand traps and strategic placement behind trees to make it more challenging as well.

“I wanted to make it the top place to play in Michigan,” Redman said. The 18th hole features a basket on top of a man-made waterfall. The course already hosted the “Burchfield Park Open” which featured some top players in the state, Redman said. Burchfield Park is in the southwest corner of the township, 331 Grovenburg Road.

Alaiedon Twp. — Mid-Michigan’s Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center proudly announced recently that it will have the opportunity to serve and rehabilitate veterans of the United States Armed Forces suffering from brain injuries. It is one of only 21 facilities nationwide selected by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) to participate in the new Assisted Living for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury Pilot Program. The center is off Sandhill Road, near the border of Delhi Township.

COLLEGE NEWS Northwood University MIDLAND — Joseph Murphy recently

received a 4-year bachelor of business administration (BBA) degree from Northwood University. Thelen is from Holt.

Calvin College GRAND RAPIDS — Kacy Cryderman of Holt has been named to the spring 2011 dean’s list at Calvin College. To earn a spot on the dean’s list requires that a student maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) for the semester and have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA.

The program, the first of its kind for the V.A., helps veterans with traumatic brain injuries who need long-term residential care by placing them in high-quality assisted living facilities like Origami that are closer to their homes and families, while avoiding institutional and hospital settings. Before the pilot program, veterans with brain injuries would have to obtain treatment far from home at a V.A. facility. Now, through treatment facilities like Origami, veterans are provided with more comfortable settings while still receiving access to a wide range of post-acute services and supports that will help them on the road to rehabilitation. “It was an honor to be chosen to participate in this pilot program but the real honor is having the opportunity to work with heroes from our armed forces,” said Origami’s Director of Program Operations Eric Hannah, MSA. “These brave men and women put their lives on the line every day to defend our freedom. Everyone at Origami is excited about the chance to give something back by helping them recover from traumatic brain injuries so much closer to their homes and loved ones.”

THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This LJ-0100110471

allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic,

County forums on foreclosure to begin soon in Mason. “We know that our fight against foreclosure fraud has raised a lot of questions from our citizens recently,” said Hertel. “We want to be able to get out and answer some of those questions in person.” Since taking office in 2009, Hertel has been actively seeking to raise awareness in Ingham County of the many different types of property fraud that have been increasing

throughout Michigan. In September of that year, he launched the Property Fraud Alert system, a free service to Ingham County residents, to notify them when any property documents containing their names were recorded in the county. In 2011, Hertel has launched a series of investigations into alleged fore-

closure frauds that were perpetuated in Ingham County over the last decade. With the help of the Ingham County Commissioners, he has begun an aggressive campaign to obtain legal assistance for those who have been confirmed as victims. Hertel will be joined at many of the upcoming meetings by representatives from Legal Services

of South Central Michigan, the non-profit firm he has enlisted to help advise citizens who have been directly affected by fraud. “It’s been a pretty busy year in my office, with the different frauds that we have discovered,” continued Hertel. “Many people who were the subject of these illegal foreclosures, haven’t even realized it yet.

Most have already been evicted from those homes. And I know that the headlines about these situations in the newspaper have probably created more questions than they have answered. I want to spend the next few months reaching out to people where they live, to answer some of those ques-

tions.” “We all pay the price for mortgage foreclosure,” said Hertel. “Beyond those who lose their homes, other property owners in the vicinity suffer the loss of

value on their residence. County residents feel the pinch when there are fewer resources to provide for services like public safety and health programs.Even if a homeowner is not currently facing a foreclosure situation, awareness of the problem in our community is extremely important.” “Even if they feel that their home and their

finances are in a safe position, there will be some great information at these meetings for our residents,” said Hertel. “These are a lot of scams and dangerous people out there who know how to go after the equity you have in your home. The best thing that we can do to keep our property ownership stable in Ingham County is to educate and

inform our citizens.” The next meeting on the schedule is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 5:30 p.m. It will take place at the Ingham County Fairground Community Hall, in Mason. Your new choice for Medicare.

In 1976, she served as cochair of ERAmerica, the coalition of organizations that supported ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and as deputy chairman of Gerald R. Ford’s presidential campaign committee. Born in Flint, Fitzgerald is a former editor at the Washington Post. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1973 and was the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief of The Michigan Daily, the campus newspaper. In her talk, Fitzgerald will reflect on the course of Peterson’ career and how her experience in politics led her to identify more closely with women’s issues than those of her party.

LANSING — The Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame, 213 W. Main St., Lansing, will host a lecture and book signing on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the center. The featured speaker will be Sara Fitzgerald, author of the new biography, “Elly Peterson: ‘Mother’ of the Moderates.” Admission to the event is free and copies of Fitzgerald’s book will be available for purchase in the gift shop. Peterson, who was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 1984, was the first woman to chair a state Republican Party, twice served as assistant chair of the Republican National Committee and ran for a U.S. Senate seat from Michigan in 1964.
