ENFORCEMENT INCLUDES OFF-CAMPUS INCIDENTS
Holt to crack down on cyberbullying Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com
Delhi Township Fire Department responded to a report of a combine which caught fire and was extending to a field near the intersection of Grovenburg Road and McCue Road Friday, Aug. 5. Firefighters saw that the combine was already a total loss and directed resources to begin controlling the field fire. The height of the crops involved made it difficult to control the flames using conventional methods, so additional resources were requested. Mutual aid was requested from Windsor Township Emergency Services for a grass rig, tanker and manpower. Additional aid was called in from the Mason Fire Department for a grass rig and the Lansing Fire Department for a grass rig. An estimated 10 acres became involved before the fire was brought under control. MICHAEL KEITH\COURTESY PHOTO

Cyberbullies beware. The Holt Public Schools Board of Education has approved a new policy as part of its student conduct handbook, and Mason school officials say the new year will start with a frank talk to teachers and students about the problem. While traditional bullying policies have been encouraged and acted upon by schools in recent years,
cyberbullying brings social media and off campus activities into the student conduct conversation. Holt’s bullying policy was approved in November, 2002. Now nine years later board members decided it was necessary to include cyberbullying. “It’s bad,” Holt Deputy Superintendent Scott Szpara said. “Have you heard of slam books? There is an online version — and it is not good for anyone.” “Slam books” started as
paper journals passed around junior high classrooms that would have questions in them, such as, “Who is the worst dressed teacher?” and “Who is the most popular girl?” The name came from the action taken when a teacher would walk nearby – the book would have to be slammed shut and quickly covered by other books. Szpara said an online version is gaining See BULLY, Page 15
Sen. Whitmer says voters duped by GOP agenda Dawn Parker

LANSING – Just past the six-month mark, some things at the State Capital are the way they’ve always been. Many things have changed, though, which has given State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer much to consider. Whitmer’s district includes all of Ingham County except for an area in the southern part of the county.
First of two-part series The East Lansing Democrat and Senate Majority Leader has seen much in her first half-year on the job – and she likes some
things better than others. “We haven’t shut down state government, so there’s always an upside,” Whitmer deadpanned. The course of action taken by Gov. Rick Snyder and the Republican majority in the Legislature turned her thoughts in a more serious direction. “This governor talked Sen. Whitmer about shared sacrifice, moving all of Michigan forward. On Monday, Aug. 15, the Kiwanis Club of Holt held its annual picnic at the Der Happy Hollow park. Kiwanis members and their guests enjoyed a pot luck dinner while enjoying the beauty and peacefulness of the park. After dinner, the members gathered at the lighthouse to pay honor to Don Thomson, a fellow Kiwanian who had built the lighthouse for the park and who passed away earlier this year. The club dedicated the lighthouse in Don’s memory by placing a plaque on the lighthouse. Don had been a member of the Holt Kiwanis Club for 24 years and served on the Spiritual Aims and Care Committee while also helping on the many club projects. Don was a pastor in the Presbyterian Church, a retired teacher, and loved to play his various harmonicas in nursing homes and at Kiwanis meetings. Besides the lighthouse he built and donated to the park, he built many others that can be found in lawns throughout the community. Don was an example of a true Kiwanian with his passion, dedication and commitment to making the world better place one child and one community at a time. COURTESY PHOTO

1 was supposed to be jobs,” Whitmer said. “What we have seen is an agenda that picks winners and losers, takes money away from our schools to pay for a business tax cut, taxes pensioners … It does not represent shared sacrifice. “Worst of all, they can’t point to one thing they’ve done that will create a single job in Michigan. “If they could, he’d be touting it,” Whitmer continued. “But he even has acknowledged – the governor himself – that he can’t guarantee one job will be created from any of the massive changes that he’s pushed on individuals in our state.” While the Republican majority has made progress difficult downtown, Whitmer said regular contact with constituents keeps her going. “We did town halls across the state, and people feel like they’ve been duped by this Republican agenda. “When they voted for

Gov. Snyder, he didn’t say, ‘The first thing I’m going to do is slash your schools and tax your pensions.’ I think people are angry and surprised, and they need to have a voice,” she said. “I think our job is that much more important, despite being outnumbered in such a heavy manner.”
Education priority When Whitmer speaks to her own constituents, education continues to be a priority. “It’s the reason my parents came to this community and raised me here. It’s the reason I stayed here and got two degrees from MSU and chose to raise my kids here,” she said. “Schooling, the investment in education, those are critical things if you want to create jobs in Michigan and turn our
economy around. The primary issue and cause I’ve always fought for here – and I think now it’s even tougher but more important than ever.” As a parent with two children in East Lansing, Whitmer has frequent contact with public schools. She wonders whether her colleagues can say the same. “I go in every week – almost every day. Whether it’s dropping my kids off or picking them up, I see what’s going on in the classroom,” she said. “I see some fantastic teachers dealing with class sizes that are going to soar and kids with some unique issues and really need – and deserve – extra time, and they are going to be so stretched that I worry about the quality of education for everyone in that classroom.”

Holt Hometown Festival returns for family fun Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com
HOLT – Organizers say the 2011 version of the Holt Hometown Festival will have traditional favorites with a mix of the future: Fun promotions throughout the area from local businesses. “We’re excited about this year as well as the future of the festival,” said Kim Harless, a member of the festi-
val committee and manager at the Holt/S. Lansing Branch of Dart Bank. Harless said the festival spirit will be everywhere this year. From a 5K fundraiser race sponsored by Causeway Bay to the annual fireworks show that is “second to none.” Harless and fellow committee member Mark Jenks, who is also the Delhi Township Director of Parks and Recreation, said the

festival is spreading across the community and is encouraging local businesses to participate by offering something different. “While not every business listing is on the official calendar of events they will have their own way to celebrate,” Jenks said. “Local restaurants will no doubt have a tent and we know Spartan Speedway will be having a championship night.” The festival will be Aug. 26-27 at various locations. Harless said one example is the Holt and Dimondale Agency at 2129 Aurelius Road. They will be having a customer appreciation day in honor of the festival on Aug. 26 from noon until 5 p.m. The special day will include hot dogs and a free cracked windshield repair as the agency will be accept-

The new policy even makes it clear about enforcement outside the school walls. “Though an incident … may occur off campus … if a student’s ability to receive an education or a school’s ability to provide

an education … is significantly impaired … disciplinary sanctions may be issued,” the new policy says. The result could be suspension or expulsion, and enforcement will be aided by the district’s new police officer, Mary Brown. Brown was hired this year by both Holt Public Schools and Delhi Township and will split the cost. Brown has nine years of experience as a deputy with the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department. Mason Superintendent Mark Dillingham said there will be a concerted effort to address the issue once the school year begins, but there are no specific policies naming
cyberbullying on the books yet. “We know the state is working on wording for this kind of problem so we are waiting in that aspect,” Dillingham said. “But at the start of the school year we are going to make it clear and inform teachers and students about the issue. Dillingham said there will be a school-wide discussion on the issue with an expert, and administration and staff have a bullying committee that is very active. “They are looking at some of the many ways to try and deal with the issue as well as inform staff and students about it,” Dillingham said.

Kiwanis Club honors Art Nott If you live in Holt and have ever been to a blood drive, community Christmas tree lighting, Kiwanis chicken BBQ, or the Kiwanis sponsored Easter egg hunt then you’ve seen Art Nott. The Kiwanis Club of Holt presented Art Nott with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his sincere dedication and many years of service to the Kiwanis Club and the community at its Aug. 1 meeting. Art has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Holt for 28 years and has served as president from 1990-1991 and on the board of directors. He has been the chair of the inter club meetings for nine years and chair of the Kiwanis sponsored American Red Cross blood drives in Holt for eight years. He has been an Ingham Regional Medical Center volunteer for 15 years. Fifteen years ago, Art and fellow Kiwanian Vicki Edwards brought the idea of having a community Christmas tree lighting ceremony to the township board. With the help of the township, Art and Vicki organized the first tree lighting ceremony. This year will be the 16th tree lighting ceremony and Art has been on the organizing committee every year. Art has been a member of the Holt United Methodist Church for 15 years and
