Twp. treasurer Ammon announces he will retire Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com
DELHI TWP. - Long-time Delhi Township board member and life-long Holt resident Harry Ammon announced his retirement at the township board meeting on Sept. 20. In the last Ammon 11 years Ammon has served as township treasurer, but has been Township Supervisor and a member of various commissions all of his life for the township. Ammon graduated from Holt High School in 1961 and is a member of the Holt High School Athletic Hall of Fame. “What a big loss,”
Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrich said. “This guy lives and breathes Holt. He always did what was best for the township.” In an effort to save the township money, Ammon recommended the treasurer position be changed to a part-time position, which was approved by the board and started this year. Ammon said he enjoyed being “part-time retired” so much that he decided to make it full time. “I’ve decided to do this along with my wife while we still are in good health,” Ammon said. “We have a place in Arizona that we really like to visit and travel. This is the right time to do this.” Delhi Township Trustee Jerry Ketchum said Ammon is an “icon.” “I remember coming to
a board meeting and meeting him 26 years ago,” Ketchum said. Ammon will serve as treasurer the remainder of 2011. “What a great job,” Ammon said. “I enjoyed every minute of it and didn’t mind coming in to work.” As treasurer, his seat on the board doesn’t expire until 2012, so board members will have to appoint a successor to begin in January. Ammon recommended trustee Roy Sweet, who is a certified accountant and has worked for Holt Public Schools. If the board appoints Sweet, his trustee seat will then become available. The person will serve the remainder of the time on the board until the election in November, 2012.
Harvest of the Arts Festival lifts creativity Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com
HOLT - Although the weather wasn’t “hot” this year, the salsa was. The annual Harvest of the Arts Festival, which includes a “Holt & Spicy”
Salsa Competition, drew crowds on Sept. 17 for its second year. “We had over 100 attendees and with the competition, and more people came out to see the arts here in Holt,” said Organizer Sara Reedy.
Each year the events get more community support and awareness, which furthers the mission of the sponsors, The Holt Community Arts Council, which in turn See FESTIVAL, Page 8

According to Windsor Township Treasurer Jerri Marst-Blush, the cemetery paid its winter tax bill, which included a special sewer assessment on its four connecting parcels. She said the current assessment on the property is set at zero, which probably has to do with the investigation. The tax bill lists Midwest Memorial Group as the owner. In the attorney general’s announcement, Midwest Memorial Group was listed as buying 26 of the 28 cemeteries and will handle restitution. See SCAM, Page 8

Reedy said it wasn’t easy. “One of the hardest parts of putting these events together, is creating that momentum with artists,” she said. “It is hard to draw in quality artists until you have a reputation in the art community, but that reputation doesn’t come until you’ve worked with a number of artists positively. HOLT - In their one point double over-time victory over Everett, Holt looked like the team they thought they would be. If the first two games were learning experiences, Holt is showing that learned the lessons well. In their first two games, Holt scored 21 total points and gave up 66. However, in conference play Holt has given up just 22 points (nine of which came in the two overtimes) while scoring 42. Holt appears to have become that tough defense they have become known for and their defensive play was key in the win over Everett. After fighting to a 7-7 tie at the end of regulation, Holt had the ball first to start the first overtime. Holt actually lost 2
yards and ended up settling for a field goal. The defense came in to a situation where they had to hold Everett to same. “Before [the defense goes] on the field we always get into a mini huddle,” Linebacker Matt Zajac said. “Before the overtime we were saying; ‘believe we can do it, and we can do it. Go out and there and play together and play for the guy next to you.’” Holt did hold Everett to the field goal in the first overtime but gave up a touchdown to start the second overtime. However, after the touchdown Zajac made perhaps the biggest play of the game and blocked the extra point. Matt Zajac attributes the play to studying film with his cousin and starting safety Jacob Zajac. “During film we saw that the wing always went way outside to chase the outside guy so we looked
at each other and said ‘let’s do this’.” When Holt’s offense took the field, they were able to get a touchdown. Holt has a weapon near the goal line that no other team has, a 6-3 250 pound wide receiver. Sophomore Colin Jones caught a screen pass and was able to rumble into the endzone for a seven yard touchdown. Last year’s Division 1-2 all state kicker Evan Fischer knocked the extra point though for the win. In addition to the overtime performance, Holt’s defense played well the entire game. Everett is a spread team known for throwing the ball and Holt held them to 17 yards passing the entire game. “They’re a team that can spread you all over the place and are very effective and their quarterback is outstanding,” Coach Al Slamer said. “and that was great for us.” One of the key players
in the Ram Defense is senior Linebacker Tobin Egger. Egger had 13 tackles for Holt in the win and is one of just four returning starters on defense. As an inexperienced squad the defense struggled early in the season but is now starting to figure each other out and is playing as well as any defense in the area. “We all come out and play as a unit and everybody is firing on the same cylinders,” Egger said. “We all work on are goals and if we are able to do our goals we’ll stop the other team.”

The kick must be taken immediately following the catch, a team may not run an offensive play and then try a free kick. This rule is rarely used but it allowed Holt to attempt the field goal with no rush, and from 57 yards rather than 65. Holt is no stranger to this rule as they also took advantage of it in 2005 against Charlotte as well.

Cross country team hopes to achieve goals Ryan Bort rbort@lsj.com
HOLT - Playing the role of the dark horse, the boys cross country team has set lofty goals this season. The Rams are taking aim at the CAAC Blue championship and making it to the state meet as a team. In cross country your score is equal to you finishing place, and the team with the lowest cumulative score f their top five runners wins. Unlike most competitive teams, the Rams do not have a runner that will consistently bring in very low scores, but they are still winning meets. Their secret: depth and packing. At the Battle Creek Lakeview
Invitational last Saturday, which the Rams won, Holt’s top 5 finishers finished within 22 seconds of each other and their top 7 finished just over a minute apart. “I call them five interchangeable parts,” Coach Dave Foy said. “because they are so close and always switch places with each other.” Senior Matt Snay finished fifth among the Rams and tenth overall at Battle Creek, but against Grand Ledge and Eastern Tuesday, Snay bested all of his teammates and took third overall. Holt beat Eatern 15-48 at that meet but lost to Grand Ledge 30-25. Still Holt thinks they can accomplish the goals they set out earlier in the season.
“Despite the one loss to Grand Ledge we still believe we can get them in the league meet,” Foy said. “We think we can beat Okemos too, but we can’t make any mistakes.” Snay points out that this unique team make up is something that actually helps the team beat the other teams they face and will aid them against
Okemos and in the conference meet. “We don’t have that runner this year that is going to get us that real low score,” Snay said. “But being in a tight pack we are able to get beat by one or two guys on the other team and still have lower scores than their teams.” In order to continue to
win and make it to the state meet, senior Everett Rawlings said it is clear the team’s times will have to decrease. Rawlings said he thinks everyone need to drop 20 seconds but is sure that is a feasible goal. Part of Rawlings’ con-
fidence comes once again from the way the team is made up this year. “It forces us to push each other and work harder so we can beat our teammates,” Rawlings said of the proximity of teammates’ finishes. “and that moves us further and further ahead.”

Schools are major force in blood drive help LANSING — With school back in session and fall fast approaching, the American Red Cross is encouraging all eligible donors to roll up their sleeves to help save lives. Every year, students nationwide join the American Red Cross as blood donors and blood drive sponsors, all in an effort to help hospital patients in need. But, all donors, whether they are students or not, are encouraged to make an appointment to help save lives. “Students are a major force in building and maintaining the blood supply,” said Sharon Jaksa, CEO for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “But, we need the help of all eligible donors to be able meet the needs of hospital patients.” High schools and colleges sponsor about 19 per-
cent of Red Cross blood drives in the coverage area of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Donors through these drives can range in age from 16 to 25, and give about 30 percent of blood collected in the parts of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio served by the Red Cross. In the United States, about 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood. However, less than five percent of the population actually makes an appointment to donate. As an added incentive for donors, everyone who comes out to donate blood or platelets in September and October has a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card. EAST LANSING – The girls behind the men of “Jersey Boys” work hard for their money. The musical chronicling the storied career of pop band the Four Seasons opens Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts for a run continuing through Sunday, Oct. 16. Just three actresses slip in and out of costumes for dozens of roles. Each has a main part along with many smaller roles – some that only last a few minutes. Kara Tremel stars as Mary Delgado, Frankie Valli’s first wife. A native of Moose Jaw, Sask., Tremel moved to Toronto at age 18 to attend college and study musical theater. Tremel’s career includes an eight-year stint in Europe, during which she toured in musicals all over the continent. “This is the best show I’ve ever been in,” she said. According to the story, Delgado was the one who suggested Valli adopt that spelling of his stage name, rather than the Vally he preferred. “She’s a tough broad. She’s a real Jersey girl who likes her cigarettes and her drinks,” Tremel said of Delgado. “She is the one who helps
him discover his name. She is the woman behind him. She definitely helps him get on his way.” Stepping into a host of minor characters isn’t as tough as it might seem, especially when the cast has the help of talented backstage attendants and dressers. “We’re able to keep track pretty easily,” said Tremel, part of the cast for four years. “You run offstage, you get a new costume and a new wig. You look down at the costume, you know who you are and you do it.”
Pure fun Denise Payne’s main role is Valli’s daughter Francine. Being part of the “Jersey Boys” cast is “pure fun,” she said – even when there is sometimes barely a minute to switch characters. “Each little role is individually very small, but they’re all so different. It’s three hours of getting to play different characters,” Payne said. “It’s challenging, but it’s fun. It’s not like any show that’s ever been written. Theater-wise, I’m lucky to get three hours of play every night.” Payne grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. She attended Niagara University for college and spent summers at New York University studying dance. Both actresses said they’ve been able to draw
on their own life experiences to enrich their respective characters. Frankie and Mary, for example, eventually go their separate ways. “I’ve had a roller-coaster ride of relationships. Some have been great, and some were not so great,” Tremel said. “I’ve definitely used the not-so-great ones when it comes to portraying the character.” Touring and the life of an actor is “not a stable life,” she continued, and definitely takes its toll on relationships. “It’s a good thing this is a show with more mature actors. We’ve gone through our 20s, we’ve experienced a lot. We’ve made mistakes, gotten over that and learned from them. I’ve drawn on all those experiences to bring that into the character.” While Payne said playing someone she’s never been requires some suspension of disbelief, she does remember what it was like to be 16. She also sees the female characters as having different acting challenges than the men. “They go from young men to adults, and there’s a lot of tension between them. We haven’t had a transition like that at all, so we’re making two completely different journeys as an actor,” she added. “Thinking about how they moved in the 50s, vs. a hooker character in the 60s
“It’s a good thing this is a show with more mature actors. We’ve gone through our 20s, we’ve experienced a lot. We’ve made mistakes, gotten over that and learned from them. I’ve drawn on all those experiences to bring that into the character.”
