DELHI TWP. – Delhi Township Trustees approved the sale of another refurbished house as part of its housing stabilization program. Trustees on Oct. 18 approved the sale of the house at 2138 Dean Street for $69,900 and authorized the township manager or

township treasurer to execute all documents related to the sale. The property, which had holes in the roof, was purchased through the state’s Housing Urban Development’s “$1 Home Sales to Local Governments” Program and restored not only to diminish blight in the neighborhood but also to return it to the tax rolls, said Community Development

Director Tracy Miller. The township is using the state program as a basis for a program of its own, in which the blighted homes are bought for $1, restored by the township, and then sold. The program was started as a means to make sure township neighborhoods aren’t negatively affected See PROGRAM, Page 3

HOLT — Budget cuts are never easy. A decision to freeze the extra pay given to the director of the yearly spring musical this year has led to it being cancelled. The decision by Holt Public Schools administrators was unwanted, but is part of a larger picture, according to Superintendent Dr. Johnny Scott. “We felt it was a matter of comparing opportunities for our students out of the classroom,” Scott said. “And we felt there are still opportunities for students

to become involved in a production elsewhere in the community.” Students are currently rehearsing for the fall production of “Arsenic and Old lace” which will be presented the first week of November. The long list of extra pay given to employees who participate is called “Schedule B” and includes everything from coaching sports to being the captain of the Quiz Bowl team or a student government advisor. Teachers sign up to be in those positions at the end of the previous school year. Scott said only those positions that were not immediately filled at the

end of last year were considered to be cut this year. The director and technical director for the spring production was not filled, so it was one of a few that were cut. Another cut was the Key Club sponsor, who helps high school students who work with a service organization like the Holt Lions or Kiwanis. Faced with a projected $4 million deficit, district officials have hosted numerous public forums throughout the community to help explain the process. HOLT – The heavy thump of drums filled the Wilcox Elementary gymnasium. It was part of a welcoming song by fourth graders who also sang and made physical gestures to replicate an African song. Holt’s Wilcox Elementary hosted “International Night” on Oct. 19.

The festival hosts MSU students who act as cultural ambassadors and show students how those from other countries dress, eat and live life. Both third and fourth graders also presented separate concerts to give festival-goers a taste of music from other countries. Alissa Cohen, MSU’s English Language Center faculty advisor to the new

Cultural Ambassadors Club, helped organize the event. “We are a group of international students at MSU whose mission is to forge international connections and foster cultural understanding,” she said. “It was a special night and the club worked very hard to prepare.” The club consists of 22 See FESTIVAL, Page 7

Expo at Holt High Oct. 26 More than 500 visitors came to meet and talk with representatives of almost 80 Delhi Township businesses at the 2010 Delhi Business Expo. Organizers expect to exceed that turnout at the third annual Delhi Business Expo on Oct. 26, at Holt High School. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. The Expo runs from 6-8:30 p.m. With studies documenting that more than fifty cents of every dollar spent locally stays in the local economy, Expo organizer Chuck Grinnell emphasized that the Expo offers a great opportunity for residents and local business representatives to get acquainted. “The Expo really supports the growth of local business,” he said. “It’s a way of reconnecting with that ‘small town service’ you get when you know the merchant or salesperson.” In addition to exhibits of local merchants’ goods and services, the Expo will feature coupons and giveaways for attendees, and many vendors will offer exclusive Expo discounts to those who stop by. There will also be a grand prize drawing for a $500 VISA® gift card, so attendees are encouraged to register. Grovenburg church seeks vendors for major bazaar Grovenburg United Methodist Church in Holt is calling for vendors for its 37th annual Old Country Church Bazaar held in conjunction with the Holt Craft Show Village Sampler. he Holt Rams swim and dive teams are trading their goggles for oven mitts to commence the 18th annual Apple Pie Fundraiser. Over the years, thousands of pies have been sold to Holt and surrounding communities to help support the swim program. “This is one of our main fundraisers for the year,” said Head Coach Marty Pohl. “It’s fun making all of the pies, and the community counts on us to do it. They are all handmade and offered at a very fair price; $10 each or 3 for $28.” “We are in a re-building phase for both the boys and girls teams, but we have a strong core to build from,” Pohl said. “And you can never have enough swimmers”. Fundraisers like these help to reduce participation costs, which ultimately recruit more athletes. And the swimmers and parents have a blast making pies; over 1300 in about 10 hours. “It is quite the assembly line”.

Students were able to try clothes on from Saudi Arabia, take a look at a “date” as a food and practice coloring the many different flags that were there. Some of the presenters also brought their children with them to proudly help with the presentations. One representative showed a map of Indonesia and asked a student how many islands were part of his country.

No-Fault insurance changes will hurt Michigan families Automobile Insurance Act was passed in 1972 and went into effect in October of 1973. The concept of the Michigan Auto No-Fault Insurance Act is to assure payment of certain insurance benefits to victims of motor vehicle related accidents, regardless of who was at fault. PIP benefits are paid for by insurance providers and are unlimited to anyone with an auto insurance policy in Michigan. These benefits reimburse all necessarily reasonable medical expenses resulting from an auto accident, for the life of the injury, as well as lost wages that drivers otherwise would be forced to sue for. House Bill 4936 would remove the mandate that insurance companies pay for all reasonable and necessary care for the life of the injury and replace

The loss of nofault auto insurance funding for these expenses will mean a massive cost shift to Medicaid and Medicare. Not only does this legislation hurt Michigan taxpayers, it will likely cost our state jobs as well. As reported in a recent study released by the Anderson

The Michigan House recently took testimony on House Bill 4936, which would drastically change Michigan’s nearly 40-year-old Auto No-Fault statute and will result in significant limitations on the medical expense coverages and legal rights of auto accident victims. This legislation eliminates the current lifetime Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage for reasonably necessary products, services, and accommodations. No one will have the option to buy this coverage any longer. Rather, coverage for such expenses will only be available in incremental coverage levels. This would put Michigan consumers at risk of exhausting their lifetime limit of health care, forcing them to either sue, flooding our court systems, or turn to Medicaid, increasing taxpayer expense. With a win the Rams would become outright conference champions. However, should the Rams lose, as many as four teams could get their Hands on the title. Holt and Grand Ledge would each get a share as well as the winner of the East Lansing-Okemos Game. If Sexton defeats Eastern in week nine, a Rams loss would also mean a cochampionship for the Big Reds as well. Holt needs a win to make the playoffs, as six wins earns any team an automatic bid. However, a only a handful of teams can make the playoffs at 5-4.

HOLT — As the Rams stepped onto the field last Friday night to face their rivals, more than just a game was on the line. The Rams had secured at least a share of the conference title with a win over Jackson last week, but a trip to the playoffs would only come with a win over the Comets. Grand Ledge’s situation was the opposite. After starting 6-0 the Comets earned their playoff birth three weeks ago. However after losses to Everett and East Lansing in weeks seven and eight, the Comets needed to beat Holt to share the CAAC title. With so much up for grabs, the game would be another great rivalry game for the two area giants. Either Holt or Grand Ledge has had a least a share of the conference title every year since 2003 when East Lansing won it, showing just how strong these two teams

have been over the years. “It’s Grand Ledge week,” Coach Al Slamer said. “People have been talking about whether playoffs or an outright conference championship is more motivation- Its Grand Ledge week.” Grand Ledge leads the series (since 1950) 26-18-1 but since 2000 Holt holds a slight edge 7-6. Despite recent success senior linebacker and team captain Matt Zajac was looking for his first high school win over Grand Ledge. Zajac comes from a family that has had a lot of success in Holt Football. His brother Mitch played in 2007, his cousin Danny played in 2006, his dad played Mark played in 1978, and uncles Mike and Tom played in 71 and 81. All of them but Tom beat Grand Ledge in their Senior years and Matt hopes to continue the trend. “They’ve all won against Grand Ledge and I haven’t,” Matt Zajac said.

George Economy, said after their Oct. 17 meeting that the use of recall petitions has steadily climbed in recent years. “There were a couple of local issues these last couple of years, then the statelevel stuff really exploded this year,” Schertzing said. “Are people frustrated because of the economy, or by the coarseness of politics? How much of this is driven by the economy?” Schertzing, Bryanton and Economy rejected five petitions from those seeking

to oust state Reps. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing and Barbara Byrum, D-Onondaga. The consideration of a third set of petitions filed against state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, was rescheduled to 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24 because of a funeral. “The case law is pretty clear – People in Michigan have the right to (petition for a) recall,” said Stu Sandler, representing petitioners Frank Lambert of Haslett and Robert Walter of Holt. While they might have that right, countered attorney Michael Hodge, voters are also entitled to a clear explanation of what they are signing. “Simply reciting House Bill numbers does nothing to explain what this is all about,” said Hodge, while pointing out that passage of House Bills 4409 and 4410 – which concern the 48-month limit on welfare benefits – were passed in August, not May as the petition asserts. “For Rep. Meadows to defend himself, he at least ought to have the right date in front of him,” Hodge continued. Recall history That campaign, noted longtime Lansing pundit Bill Ballenger, flipped the balance in the Senate from 20-18 Democratic to 20-18 Republican. The Republicans have not relinquished control of the Senate since then. The only other recall election came in November 2008 against then-Speaker of the House Andy Dillon, D-Redford. That campaign failed. The use of recalls escalated in 2007 and 2008, culminating in the push to kick Dillon out. Recall efforts continue unabated on both sides of the aisle, with more than two dozen campaigns at some

point in the process. Only one of those efforts, against state Rep. Paul Scott, R-Grand Blanc, appears to have a chance of going to the voters in the near future. Ballenger says recall attempts on Democrats like Byrum, Meadows and Whitmer all appear to be in retaliation for Democratic campaigns against Republicans. And while Democrats say they’re innocent, “Unfortunately their fingerprints are all over these recalls,” he added. “The Republicans are turning around and saying, ‘Two can play at this game’.” Like Schertzing, Ballenger has only witnessed an escalation of the use of recall petitions in the last three years. Ballenger is concerned about the use of three-member election commissions – one for each of the state’s 83 counties – to decide whether the petitions go forward. Ballenger also foresees a time where the Legislature could attempt to reword state recall election language. “The question is – what really are the criteria? No one is really sure.
