The Eaton Rapids Conservation Club was on hand to teach kids BB and pellet gun shooting. Darien Vissers, 9, of Haslett took to that activity quite well. “It’s fun, and I hit it right in the middle,” Darien said, holding up his sheet with the bull’s-eye. Library moving to digital world Downloads way up at Mason branch
Christie Bleck he line to try BB and pellet guns at the Eaton Rapids Conservation Club’s booth at the June 11 Mason Optimist Club Youth Day was testament to how popular outdoor activities are with kids. “They’re having a great time,” said Gary Barker, the Optimist Club member who spearheaded the fourth annual event. Mammal pelts, a huge muskellunge decoy, trapping activities, kayaking, fishing and other activities were presented to kids in various stations set up at Burchfield Park. “And they’re really getting more involved in sports events this year,” Barker said. For example, kids were interested in watching a dog retrieve a decoy during special demonstrations. “The archery and air rifle — they can’t get stopped,” Barker said. Dan May, who manned the National Wildlife Turkey Federation booth, explained turkey calls and the stealth involved in turkey hunting to passersby. “When they start coming in, you can’t move a muscle,” May said. Youngsters, May said, enjoyed trying the various turkey calls — “anything they can make noise with.” Some had an easier time than others. “We see a lot of different skill levels go through here,” he said.

MASON — The Mason Library continues to go digital. The library was big into this cyber realm and “decluttering” in 2010, said its head librarian, Sheryl Bass. Bass presented library’s annual report to the City Council on June 6. That decluttering, she said, opened space for newer, more relevant titles. “As a result, the library is cleaner, more spacious and feels a little lighter,” Bass said. As with many other segments of society, the library is going more and more digital, with 86 percent more digital downloads last year over 2009, according to Bass. She said 2,000 new library cards were issued in 2010, and the number of logged-on hours numbered 12,896. Wi-Fi usage also was up a whopping 44 percent. Michelle Simmons of Mason is a mother of four who said she comes to the Mason Library almost
every day as she doesn’t have Internet access at home. Her kids mostly play games at the library, although her oldest, Breeanna, took online college courses there, Simmons said. “They do a lot of reading too,” she said. As with other Capital Area District Library branches, the Mason Library goes beyond books and computers. Bass said 4,406 patrons went to library programs last year, and increase of 13.7 percent. The programs, she noted, ranged from a teddy bear party to the popular gingerbread house-making party. Summer Reading also saw an increase of 10 percent over 2009. Bass called the “tween” set, youngsters in fourth through sixth grades, have been underserved, so programs such as the makeyour-own-sundae party and a “gross-out” event were held for that age group. “As you can imagine, the tweens all loved both of those programs,” Bass said. Adults had the opportunity to attend programs dealing with genealogy and planning for a child’s open house, Bass said. See DIGITAL, Page 4

MASON — Do you remember the first time you learned about Disney World? For 12 local girls and families, that experience is coming up. They qualified to represent Michigan in the 2011 AAU fourth-grade girls basketball national championships on Aug. 1-6 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex located at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. In January, a group of fourth-grade girls, ages 9-10, tried out for the Capitol City Express (CCE) girls basketball team. The team is composed of players from Mason, Holt, DeWitt and St. Johns. Representing Mason are Alaiedon Elementary students Bailee Crandall, daughter of Carrie and Steve Crandall, and Hailee Ginter, daughter of Shawnn and John Ginter. The coaches, Mary and Paul Mills of DeWitt,
assisted by Mark Lasceski, come with a wealth of basketball experience. According to Mary Mills, “Our first season consisted of many tournaments throughout the state of Michigan in which the team finished first or second during the regular season against fourth-grade, and in some cases, fifth-grade teams.” The group secured second place in the Spartan Classic held in East Lansing in March, missing out on the first-place finish by only one point. The team took its first championship win in the AAU Friendship States tournament held in Hartland in March. The team qualified for AAU regionals and secured a bid in the state tournament in Brooklyn. The team ended the season with a 20-8 record. According to Carrie Crandell, “This experience
has exceeded our expectations. These girls have grown so much due to the phenomenal coaches they have.” Coaches, players and parents are organizing various fundraising projects including, a casino bus trip, proceed collaborations with local restaurants, can drives and participating with Michigan International Speedway to earn money preparing giveaways for the upcoming race season. Rayner needs help
Recently another very large group of school children were enjoying Rayner Park. This year to date, thousands of people have spent many hours enjoying this wonderful park. This has been made possible through the efforts of Mason city officials and literally hundreds of volunteers. That is the good news. The rest of the story is yet to be told. Ingham County closed the park prior to Mason leasing it. There were volunteers helping the county keep the
park going and the county was spending over $40,000 per year for maintenance. It was not working. Thus far for the fiscal year, Mason is out somewhere below $10,000. The work of volunteers has made the park usable as evidenced by the numbers. However, this situation cannot last without help. On April 2, people gave more than 300 personhours of labor to open the park. Since then several people have spent time working there, but a quick look shows that more is needed. Can you give 10 percent of the time you spend in the park to help? When I was a Boy Scout, my leader told me always leave a place better than you found it. You can do this by spending six minutes of every hour picking up trash, moving sticks to the road or even cleaning out the grill you used. If you like the park you use and want to do more, we certainly have something for you to do. Without help, the park just might go away again. Jim Maddix Mason

Ingham County Community News
Today, when many do not put others ahead of themselves, occasionally we experience a glimmer of hope. Such was the case right after the big storm in Mason on May 29. The day before Memorial Day, that evening and overnight, two young men in our community showed me more than I have seen of someone giving of themselves since Vietnam 43 years ago. The two young men, Michael Beard and Rodney Jewett, spent 12 hours plus, right after the storm, picking up limbs, sticks and other debris in Maple Grove Cemetery so that people coming to the cemetery would not see their loved ones grave trashed. They also saw the cemetery was as picked up as possible for Memorial Day services. These two guys didn’t do it for fame and glory. They did it because it needed doing, given the circumstances. No one would have ever known if my wife hadn’t spotted Mike and told him he looked tired. He then told my wife the story of Rodney and him cleaning up the cemetery. Acts like this make our city and community great. So if you see Mike or Rodney, say thanks — nothing more need be said. Also, a big thank you goes to the very overworked Department of Public Works for all its work.

MASON — Nine students were awarded certificates of completion from Heartwood School in front of family, friends and guests on June 7. The event began with a processional, a welcome by Heartwood Principal Marcia O’Brien and a graduation choir presentation. Following the graduation ceremony, a reception was held for the graduates and their invited guests in the school’s gymnasium.
The nine graduates attended Heartwood for a combined 82 years. Graduating were: Ricky Bolix, Benjamin Denby, Angie Ellis, William Fink, Steve Meddaugh, Elizabeth Minnema, Keith Prentler, Daniel Scott and Danyelle Ward. “We are very proud of our graduates and also sad to see them leave the Heartwood family,” O’Brien said. “It is an honor for our
staff to be able to provide them with this graduation ceremony and acknowledge their accomplishments in front of their family, friends and the Heartwood staff.” Heartwood School, a center-based program for students with special needs, is operated by Ingham Intermediate School District. Don’t put away your books for the summer Summer is officially beginning, making this a great time to sign up for Summer Reading! Our 2011 program for kids, “One World, Many Stories,” runs now through Saturday, Aug. 13. Besides being a boredom-buster, participating in a summer reading program can also help children academically. A Dominican University study showed that being a part of a public library summer reading program raised students’ reading test scores and improved their overall school readiness for the next school year. At the Aurelius Library, students will also earn fun prizes like colorchanging pencils and cups, and free passes to the Ingham County fair. We have other reading programs available, too. New this year is a special one just for pre-readers in which parents can help babies and toddlers complete early literacy activities to receive a free book. We also offer a special program for teens and tweens that caters specifically to that age group, with
AT THE LIBRARY Jennifer DeGroat prizes like kickball hacky sacks and drawings for gift cards. As always, our Summer Reading Program also includes plenty of exciting performers and events. These are held every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. through Aug. 17 and are free for all ages. We are offering Thursday Afternoon Movies at 2, with a different family movie every week through Aug. 11. Free popcorn while supplies last. Adults should plan to join us for Reminisce meetings at 2 p.m. Tuesdays, July 12 and Aug. 9. The July meeting will feature a special showing of WKAR’s “Things Not Here Anymore Part 2.” In August, Aurelius Library assistant Barb Bridges will share pictures from her recent trips to Alaska.
Finally, computer classes are still meeting through the summer. Microsoft Word Basics will be held from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13. Learn to modify, cut and paste text, plus open, close, and save documents. Experience with a mouse and Windows is required. Email Basics will be held from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. Set up your own email account and learn to send and receive messages. Experience with Windows required. Registration is required for all computer classes; call (517) 628-3743. The Aurelius Library, a Capital Area District Library, is located at 1939 Aurelius Road in Mason. Call (517) 628-3743 or visit cadl.org. Find a schedule of events at cadl.org/events. All branches of the Capital Area District Library will be closed for the holiday on Monday, July 4. Jennifer DeGroat is the head librarian at the Aurelius Library.

ONONDAGA TWP. — The Onondaga Township Board on June 9 voted 4-1 against a controversial Onondaga Dragway on Bellevue Road. Ray Comer of Onondaga had applied for the permit to reopen the dragway, which was open in the 1960s and 1970s. However, a group of residents opposed the drag strip because of concerns over noise, traffic and other issues. About 25 people attended the meeting. The issue was so controversial, there was a recall effort against three board members — Clerk Diane Johnson, Treasurer Mary Jane Hector and Trustee Jim Tow — which the Ingham County Board of Election Commissioners recently denied because of vague language.
Supervisor Randy Maiville, Trustee Steve Dwight, Johnson and Hector voted against it. Tow was the only board member to vote for it. On May 31, the Onondaga Township Planning Commission recommended against approving the SUP. Before the vote, Tow had suggested the issue be remanded back to the Planning Commission. “I don’t feel we got all the information we needed the other night,” Tow said. Tow also said Comer, who did not attend the meeting, had done everything he had been asked to be granted the permit. “We need something in this community to make a buck,” he said. Tow said Comer can put in a new request for a special use permit for the drag strip in a year. Maiville expressed concern over the length of time — two years — the dragway
issue had been debated. “Where does this end?” Maiville said. Bob Prater, a resident of Jackson who attended Thursday’s meeting, said he would have raced at the Onondaga Dragway had it been approved. “I think they should open it,” Prater said. Hector said Friday that she, Tow and Johnson received a new recall notice on June 8. Hector and Johnson previously voiced support for the dragway despite voting against it on June 9. Despite voting against the dragway, Johnson and Hector believe the new recall effort will likely continue. “I did something they don’t like,” Johnson said. Johnson said the entire board will be up for re-election in 2012. “I really was in favor of the drag strip,” Hector said. “Have all along.”
