Mason’s July 4th: parade, fireworks, family fun MASON — If Independence Day celebrations are any indication, Mason deserves to call itself “Hometown USA.” The free holiday events Monday, July 4 include an old car show on the Courthouse Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a Mason RailTime Adventures bounce house by the Courthouse steps from 6 to 7:30 p.m., a parade downtown at 7:30 p.m. and the fireworks show at the Ingham County Fairgrounds starting at dusk. The Mason Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the largest Fourth of July evening parade in the mid-Michigan area.
The step-off time is at 7:30 p.m. From fancy floats to flashy cars to tractors of all colors, the parade has enough variety to please just about anyone. The chamber’s parade events are sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. Starting from the Mason High School south parking lot, the parade proceeds north on Barnes, west on South St., north on Jefferson, and then around the Courthouse by turning east on Maple and south on Barnes to return to the school’s west parking lot. This is an open parade, so all parade
units are to line up at the Mason High School south parking lot at 6 p.m., organizers say. Those with trailers and vehicles not in the parade are to park them in the north and west lots and bring only parade units to the south lot. Before the big parade, the County Seat Old Car Club’s 25th anniversary “Cruise Back in Time” car show will take up a good part of downtown Mason. The 200 entry show is open for viewing 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show features food and beverage
availability all day long provided by Mason area groups and restaurants. Mason RailTime Adventures is offering a kiddie bounce house by the downtown Courthouse steps from 6 to 7:30 p.m. After the parade and when it finally gets dark, a fireworks show at the Ingham County Fairgrounds just seven blocks east of downtown gets underway. The fireworks are sponsored by the Mason Firefighters Association and the Mason, Dansville and Leslie Fire Departments.

MASON POLICE DEPARTMENT CRIME REPORT By Police Chief John Stressman Between June 21st and June 27th Mason police investigated 62 reported incidents involving a variety of activities—both criminal and noncriminal. These are some of those incidents worth noting and intended to keep our citizens informed of Department activities. June 21—An officer received a report from a Mason business regarding possible problems with a soon-to-be terminated employee. The complainant stated that poor performance and a veiled threat of retaliation if the employee was discharged, made to another employee, will result in the troubled employee’s termination. The complainant’s concern was the threat made and the fear it would be carried out. The complainant wanted to make the report to keep the Police Department informed in case a problem arose during the termination. The code enforcement officer opened a nuisance complaint for a tall grass violation on Franklin Farms. While investigating, the code enforcement officer also noted a second code violation for the dumping of grass clippings on the property. The matter remains open. The Department received notice from the 55th District Court that a criminal bench warrant just had been issued for a man who had fled the court after creating a disturbance. The suspect, a Mason man with frequent contacts with Mason Police officers, had originally entered the building and caused a distur-
bance after it was discovered he had tried to pass thorough security with two pocket knives. The suspect left the building, then threatened an attorney standing outside, and began throwing his bicycle against the building. With the warrant in hand, officers went to the suspect’s residence, where they met him as he was approaching on his bicycle. The suspect told the officers that if they were there to handcuff him, they might as well get out their Tasers. One officer was able to cajole the suspect into cooperating, and the tasers weren’t necessary. However, once in the patrol car, the suspect became boisterous and repeatedly threatened the officers until he was on his way to jail, after which he calmed down for the six jailers awaiting his arrival. The matter was turned over to the presiding judge. The code enforcement officer initiated nuisance complaints for overgrown vegetation and a deteriorated outbuilding on Lawton Street; a deteriorated outbuilding on South Lansing Street; and a junk vehicle on East Elm Street. In all cases the property owners have been contacted and made assurances the nuisances would be abated. Follow-up visits are planned. An officer responded to a disorderly person complaint. The complainant stated a white male in his mid 20’s had driven to his residence, tried to “call out” the complainant’s son, and then thrown two empty beer cans, striking the son’s car but not causing any damage. Afterwards the suspect left. The case

remains open. June 22—An officer was dispatched to a business on South Cedar Street to take a larceny complaint. The complainant stated that metal real estate signs had been taken from yards on Hall Boulevard and Eaton Drive; the same thing had happened in the past; and missing signs usually turned up in someone’s yard as a prank. She advised she did not want anyone to get into serious trouble over this, but that the signs were expensive, and her business wanted them back. Anyone knowing of the signs’ whereabouts is asked to contact MPD. The code enforcement officer initiated a junk car complaint in the 500 block of North Cedar Street. A note was left for the owner, and follow up will be made. The detective responded to a Mason residence for a domestic/ trouble with subject call because
the road patrol was tied up on another case. The complainant reported that her husband had just left the apartment and that the argument had been a verbal one only. She stated that they had argued the night before and that he had awakened her this morning, yelling and screaming, because he couldn’t find his boots. She told him to leave, which he eventually did after she’d called MPD. The case remains open. An officer took a larceny complaint in the 300 block of East South Street where someone had broken out the windows of the victim’s vehicle and stolen his car stereo system. Taken were an AM/FM single disk CD player, 2 speakers, and an amplifier. Anyone having information about this theft is asked to contact MPD. An officer observed three males walking northwest on State Street towards Columbia
and elected to make contact with them. One was carrying a brown paper bag wrapped around a bottle, and the officer suspected they might be consuming intoxicants on a public walkway. Investigation revealed the 3 were all over 21 years of age and the bottle had not been opened. It also revealed that one of the men had two criminal bench warrants out of two other departments. He was arrested on these and lodged in Jail. An officer was dispatched to Bond Skate Park on a report of kids being loud and using profanity. They were located and advised of the complaint. The park was locked for the rest of the night. June 23—An officer responded to a suspicious subject complaint near a local business. The subject had been described as wearing a camouflage coat and dark pants, walking up and down the street, and looking suspicious. The offi-

the female had a friend come pay her bill and give her a ride home. While patrolling in the very early hours of the morning, an officer observed a vehicle driving southeast on State Street to Maple Street at a speed far lower than the speed limit. Turning around, he followed the vehicle, observing other indications that the driver might be driving intoxicated. The officer pulled the vehicle over at Jefferson Street and Kipp and made contact with the male driver, who advised he was sleepy, and this had resulted in his erratic driving. He did admit to having taken some medications, but said he was not restricted from driving after taking them, although he exhibited several signs of being under their influence. After failing sobriety tests, he was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. It was also discovered he was a concealed pistol license carrier and had a loaded gun in his vehicle, but had failed to advise the officer of this. He was taken to a local medical facility, where he consented to a blood draw. The case is open, awaiting lab results,

The complainant reported that her company is working in a new subdivision and that they have been having problems with vandalism—most recently, someone writing a name in fresh cement and putting human feces on the seat of a forklift truck and throwing them against the side of a house. The complainant stated she believed this had been done by juveniles in the neighborhood. The officer and complainant made contact with the suspects and their families. A trespass warning was given to each of them, and they were advised not to trespass on the construction site. The complainant pointed out that her greatest concern was they not get hurt while playing there. All involved stated they understood and agreed to stay away. The case is closed at this time. Upon arrival, he found a small gathering of people who were a bit loud. He advised the resident of the complaint, and she agreed to keep the music down and her guests quiet for the rest of the night. An officer took a suspicious person complaint at a local business. The complainant stated a male subject had thrown a bag containing a black extension cord next to the door when he entered. He then walked around the business, looking at things, before coming to the counter where he kept asking the complainant the same question several times, seeming not to understand her answer. He then exited the business and drove off on his bicycle, leaving the bag behind. From the description given of the man, the officer was able to locate him at his residence and return the extension cord. The man stated he had intended to pick the cord up later, as it had gotten too heavy for him to carry. No crime was committed, so the case is closed. An officer was dispatched to a

The victim stated that an unknown person(s) had gained access to her Apple Computer and her Pay Pal accounts and that she had been alerted by both companies. The accounts had been placed on restricted status until she could be contacted and change all the pertinent information. The complainant stated she just wanted MPD to be aware of the incident. The complaint has been documented in case similar calls are received. June 25—An officer was dispatched to a harassment complaint at a Mason residence. The complainant stated she wanted to “get” her mom for harassment. She claimed her mother had stolen a large amount of money from her 20 years before when she lived elsewhere, and she had called the inspector general to report a fraud her mother had been involved in. She stated her mother had been harassing her by texting her several times. The officer reviewed the phone texts and observed there were many going back and forth

While patrolling, an officer noted an equipment violation and pulled a vehicle over at Cedar and College Roads after investigation revealed the owner had a warrant out of Ingham County. The owner, who did turn out to be the vehicle’s driver, claimed he had taken care of the warrant, had paid all his tickets, and had his license reinstated. The officer advised him the warrant was for failure to appear on the charge of driving while license suspended. The driver stated he had only been given a warning, but when the ticket was retrieved, and the officer pointed out he had been cited for DWLS and given a warning for an expired registration, he advised he had overlooked that. He was taken into custody without incident and made arrange-
ments to have his father pick up his vehicle. An officer was dispatched to a local business for a larceny complaint. The victim reported he had about 300 baseball cards— each of them autographed by the players on them—stolen out of a locked case. MASON — Leanne
Meyer remembers her feelings of dismay when she and other members of the Mason High School Class of 1960 visited Jefferson Street Square apartment building to see their class graduation photograph. “The photographs were fading and in various
states of disrepair,” she recalled. The enormous wood framed photographs of the graduating classes from 1923 through 1960 are on the walls of the former Mason High School now converted into a senior citizen living center. The broken frames, the impact of years of exposure to light and moisture and the disorganized presentation of the class

photographs left class members with a nagging worry that an important part of Mason’s history was being threatened. A campaign is underway, led by Meyer, to
repair and preserve the historic photograph and display them in an orderly way in the building — but donations are needed. “Many Mason graduates were upset to discover the sad condition of these pictures and decided to encourage others to help us,” Meyer said. So far, about 15 photographs have been restored See CAMPAIGN, Page 8

Schor and Commissioner Brian McGrain introduced the idea after reading about Washtenaw and Gratiot counties implementing similar millages. “If people come back and say, ‘No, we don’t want to do this,’ we’d probably drop it,” Schor said. Otherwise, it would have to go through the board’s committee process. A 1913 state law allows
counties to levy a special tax of up to 0.5 mills for economic development purposes without seeking voter approval. The law, Public Act 88, refers to the “advertisement of agricultural advantages” and also mentions promoting trade and tourism.
Similar taxes
Washtenaw County, which passed a similar millage in 2009, noted the tax is not subject to the Headlee Amendment because Act 88 was passed before the state constitutional amendment,
which limits tax increases. The county’s EDC has a $642,123 budget this year, which includes $350,000 in state and federal grants for specific programs, including environmental assessments. About 43 percent of the operating budget comes from contracts with local communities. The remainder comes from the county’s general fund, said Sandy Gower, the county’s economic development coordinator. If the millage is approved, the revenue would eliminate the need

Ferguson said she needs more details before she can decide whether she supports the tax. “Generally speaking I think at this time investment in economic development is great, the key to it is effective and efficient use of the funds,” she said. Schor said he doesn’t want to duplicate what other organizations are already doing. “I think an argument can be made that there’s a need” for additional funding for things like business incubators or marketing assistance, he said.

The restoration includes the use of dry mountings, acid-free backings, museum quality UV glass, repaired frames with new wires and connections. People today walk the halls at the senior living center and see photographs of their mothers, dads, aunts and uncles, Meyer said. But when the restoration process is completed there will be a way for future generations will be able to get a glimpse Mason’s history through the young faces. The class photographs were rescued 43 years ago. Meyer said someone had put many of them into the building’s furnace room where they were discovered and in 1968. Vevay Township, Mason, Leslie, Williamston, Webberville and Dansville contract with the EDC for assistance in certain economic development projects. Tim Daman, president and CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, questioned why the county would levy a tax for economic development when it’s facing budget cuts that affect public safety and infrastructure. LETTER TO THE EDITOR New teen driving law creates hardships So here I was a 17-year -old guy, on my way home from playing basketball at my church at a little after 11 p.m. I’m riding, and my dad is driving. If this is game night any time during the past year, I would be driving myself instead of riding and would save my parents a half hour and a gallon of gas, every time I play. But our new law makes it illegal
for me to drive myself after 10 p.m. until I turn 18 years old. I started thinking about some guys that used to come, but can’t anymore because they can’t get a ride. I wonder what they’re doing with their nights now. I started thinking about whether my parents would say this is just too expensive now and cut down on my chances to play. I started thinking about how with twice as many trips, my parents have twice as many chances to get hit by a reckless driver, or a deer.

You may be surprised to learn that osteoporosis affects both men and women, causing bones to become weak. The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that one in two women and one in four men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related break in their lifetime. And while osteoporosis is often thought of as an older person’s disease, you should know that it can strike at any age. Talk to your doctor about your osteoporosis risk factors. David Halsey, MD and the team at the new Allegiance Osteoporosis Center are ready to help.

MACC Golf Classic, mixer slated MASON — The 38th annual Mason Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) Golf Classic will take place on Thursday, July 28 at Eldorado Golf Course, 3750 W. Howell Road, west of Mason. The outing will begin with registration at 9 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. All area residents and businesspeople are invited to participate in this year’s four-person scramble, which features numerous games and prizes for golfers. The cost per golfer is a great value. MACC members pay $75 per golfer/$300 per foursome and non-members pay $95 per golfer/$360 per foursome. For this price, golfers play 18 holes with a cart and receive continental breakfast, lunch-at-the-turn, a “goodie bag,” beverages and dinner reception at the after golf member mixer. Those who choose not to golf may simply attend the MACC Golf Classic member mixer dinner at 3 p.m. Admission to the mixer is $20 per person. This mixer is a great opportunity to network and get to know other chamber and community members while enjoying

dinner.Again this year, net proceeds from the MACC Golf Classic will benefit the MACC Agnes “Aggie” Corner Scholarship Fund for Community Volunteerism. Each year, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving Mason High School (MHS) graduate. The 2011 scholarship was awarded to MHS graduate Elizabeth Steinhour for her active participation in 4-H and volunteerism at CHUM Therapeutic Riding. She also participated in band and student government, and will major in history at Gettysburg College in the fall. Steinhour and her parents will be special guests at the dinner reception during the after golf member mixer. As always, sponsorships are an important part of the MACC Golf Classic. Major sponsors who have already signed on to be a part of the MACC Golf Classic include Mason Auto Body Repair, Orthopaedic Rehab Specialists, CP Federal Credit Union, A&W, Ware’s Pharmacy, Dr. Timothy Zielinski and LAFCU.

Brian Kim Snow
Williamston Brian Kim Snow, the nicest guy in the world, has died from pancreatic cancer on June 26, 2011. He was 59. Kim, as he was known to most of his family and friends, was born on March 1, 1952, the middle son to Bernie and Maurine Snow. Kim graduated from Leslie High School in 1970. He excelled in three sports at Leslie High School and was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame this spring. From 1970-1976, he served in the Air National Guard and began his career with Consumers Energy in Jackson, Michigan in 1971. He was proud of his 40 years of service at his job. Raising his three children, Kevin, Paul, and Jessica in Mason, Michigan was the highlight of his life. He enjoyed coaching his boys while playing on several fast-pitch softball teams with brothers, Chris and Craig. The highlight of his softball career was catching for his father on the 1972 State Championship team. Kim was a proud grandfather to Paul and Chau’s children Tyler and Samantha as well as Jessica and Melvin’s son Melvin White, Jr. His brother Craig’s wife Michelle and their three boys Taylor, Sam and Charlie were also very important to him. Empty nesting in his Williamston home with his wife Sue was full of fun and adventures. He loved his time with Sue’s boys Matt (Sarah) and Tim (Mary) Kirby along with the rest of Sue’s extended family. Kim and Sue’s travels to Spartan Stadium, Major League Baseball parks and Boyne City were a few of their many highlights. A celebration of Kim’s life was held at the Williamston Free Methodist Church located at 4400 North Williamston Road, Williamston, MI 48895 on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Donations can be made to the church’s benevolent fund. Kim and Sue would like to thank all of their co-workers, friends and family as well as the medical staff at Ingham Regional Oncology. We love you. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
