She said although the board voted down the proper application for the drag strip last month, the group still wants a recall because “they want to make sure they have their people in place should the developer apply for a permit again.” Petitioners would need 267 signatures from the roughly 2,200 registered voters in the township to

one of them. The suspect was standing behind the lectern, addressing the judge, rocking it back and forth and speaking in an irritated tone, claiming he had just killed a raccoon and it was the best day of his life. As the Judge was sentencing him to 60 days in jail, the suspect/ defendant threw his cell phone against the courtroom wall and followed

that up by hurling a box of tissues across the room. When the suspect’s conduct continued to deteriorate, he was confronted by court officers, who tried to get him under control and into custody. The suspect continued his struggle until the Mason officer un-holstered and aimed a Taser, informing the suspect of what was about to transpire, after which he surrendered, although now passively resisting his escort to the lockup.

Later in the day the Ingham County Prosecutor issued a two year felony charge for resisting police, which will be served on the suspect where he resides in the County Jail. An officer responded to a late larceny report on Katheryn Street. The victim stated that sometime earlier in the week an unknown person(s) stole the driver side front lug nut cap cover off her vehicle while it was parked in

her driveway. The theft has been documented. An officer was dispatched to the area of Ann and Matthews Streets for someone riding a quad on the street. The rider was located and admitted to having ridden down the street. He was advised not to do so again. July 1 – An officer was dispatched to a facility on Curtis Street to attempt to arrest a resident there for a probation violation out of another county. The

suspect was located and arrested without incident. He was then transported to meet up with an Eaton County deputy. July 2 – An officer responded to a Mason residence for a MDOP complaint. A vehicle at the complainant’s residence, which belonged to his girlfriend, had been egged and covered with spaghetti sauce, and a couple of messages had been written on the windows with marker. There was

writing on the lawn in spray paint and marshmallows spread about, and egg remnants on the roof and siding of the residence, as well. The victim stated he was certain that the malicious damage had been done by his estranged wife. The MPD has dealt with other incidences involving the couple, and the case is currently under investigation. See POLCE, Page 7

The spike has come after a few years of relatively steady client numbers, she said. “It’s incredible the number of families struggling,” Meirndorf said. “Unemployment has improved for some but there are many who still

Surprising data Doug Stites, CEO of Capital Area Michigan Works, said he is not surprised by the data. “We’ve seen the labor market improve, jobs are

opening up a little bit but it seems to be very slow,” he said. “We’d like it to be faster, there are still more people looking for jobs.” But Stites said many new job openings require special skill sets, such as in health care or the information technology realm.

About 35 percent of the food bank’s clientele is working in some capacity, Meirndorf said. “Some don’t have benefits which really hurts them or it’s just not enough pay,” she said. “I think the gas prices killed us and that increased food prices. It’s just one thing after another.

Man, 62, dies in one-car crash on Dexter Trail INGHAM TWP. — A 62-year-old Dansville man died last Tuesday morning after his car left the road and struck a tree. HOLT — Orange barrels will start appearing on Holt’s busiest street this week. Cedar Street between Hancock Street and Keller Road will be resurfaced, and construction will force the road down to one lane and allow only one way traffic. Construction is slated to be complete by October. “Because of how the street is configured, it was decided it would be safer and faster for the project to go to one lane,” Delhi Township Downtown Development Authority Director Al McFadyen said. McFadyen attended a recent pre-construction meeting and reported the plans to the DDA board. The DDA is splitting the estimated $732,000 con-

struction cost with Delhi Township and the Ingham County Road Commissoin. The three were part of a special intergovernmental agreement that led to the project being done almost a year early because of the street’s poor condition. Ingham County Road Commisson Project Manager Dan Troia said only northbound traffic, which

includes many commuters from Mason, will flow through Cedar Street at times during the construction period. Southbound traffic will be diverted to Aurelius Road where it meets with Cedar Street. The one-way lane will shift as work progresses and will only run from Holt Road to Keller Road, say officials.

Volunteer help crucial for Rayner I have given my word that I would spend two hours a week in Rayner Park. One of the things I wanted to do was clean BBQ grills. It is not a difficult task. It only takes about an hour to an hour and a half after a busy weekend. Unfortunately my two hours or so have been reallocated to other activities. Today I saw three other volunteers doing their best to keep things going. Sadly, no one had the time to clean out ash filled grills. Those who grill at Rayner Park have several options. You could grill on top of the mess left by others. You could clean out the grill you plan on using. You could bring your own grill from home. Or you could spend one hour or so cleaning out all the grills to help others. A volunteer will be there every day

and can provide you tools to use. I am not asking for any real commitment. I am asking you to show up once and ask a volunteer what you could do to help one day. The fund-raiser netted over $4,000. The city is paying an employee around $6,000. That is good. However, please remember the county could not keep Rayner open spending over $40,000 per year. We have a beautiful ball diamond. We will have a music venue. Thousands of people have used the park this summer. Most can readily see the things that need doing. Without help, the park will become unusable again. I have said, 20 people giving two hours a week equals a full time employee. We do not have 20 yet. I will do my bit. Others are doing their bit. How about you today? Jim Maddix Mason

Mason’s water rate hike needed? All taxpayers in this country are at the mercy of the governmental agencies that tax us. Specifically, I’m referring to Mason’s new water rates going into effect this summer. Conserving our water usage is the “green” thing to do. But we are going to be paying more for using less.Maybe the city could be a little more conservative and pass some savings along to the taxpayers. If the current rates aren’t covering the operations of the water and sewer fund, maybe cuts could be made in that department. When my income isn’t covering my expenses, I have to cut back on my expenses.

MASON — Thirty five people are facing probation violation proceedings as a result of the most recent 55th District Court Probation Operation Nighthawk. The program is conducted on a targeted basis after business hours to monitor defendants on probation. The sweeps, which occurred June 11, June 25

and July 1, 2011, were a joint effort between the probation department and local law enforcement. Eight people were arrested: four had outstanding warrants and four were under the influence of alcohol - contrary to probation orders. “Operation Nighthawk is an important tool the court uses to encourage

compliance with the terms of probation. People are more likely to obey court orders when they know we are actively enforcing them. “When people comply with their probation, their lives are more likely to improve, the community is safer, the jail is less crowded and the police are available to respond

to emergencies,” said 55th District Court Chief Judge Thomas P. Boyd. “We thank the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office and Police Departments in the City of Mason, Meridian Township and Lansing Township along with their dedicated officers for their invaluable contribution to this important effort,” Boyd said.

During the most recent Operation Nighthawk, 202 local addresses were checked. There were 98 people found at home and in compliance. 22 probationers face violation proceedings for failing to comply with their curfew. Probationers not found at home are required to submit to alternative test-

ing to document their sobriety and will face violations if they fail to successfully comply. 55th District Court hears cases from every Ingham County community (including Meridian and Delhi Townships), with the exceptions of Lansing (54A District Court) and East Lansing (54B District Court).

Golf event to aid kids

HOLT — Youthful Giving, a non-profit organization dedicated to events and services that promote children’s well-being and sense of community, is hosting a golf outing to benefit children. The annual golf benefit will be held on Saturday, July 23, at Centennial Acres Golf Course in Sunfield. Proceeds will be used to send kids to Camp ForgetMe-Not, a therapeutic camp for children who have lost a loved one. Funds will also provide disadvantaged kids

with the opportunity to join the Lansing Soccer Club. “The golf outing was initially started as a way to support the growth of Camp Forget-Me-Not,” said Theresa and Eric Larsen, founders of Youthful Giving “We became involved in the Lansing Soccer Club at the request of the president. We willingly accepted the chance to support an additional youth program that creates opportunities for children to become more involved in the community.”

Sponsors at this year’s event include OfficeMax, Sandy and Neil Macvicar, The Lions Club of Holt and the Lansing Delta Lioness Club. Registration for the four-person scramble begins at 1 p.m. A shotgun will follow at 2:30 p.m. Registration includes 18 holes, cart fees, range balls, and all meals. The deadline to register is Friday, July 23. The cost is $50 per golfer. Various levels of sponsorship are available. — From Youthful Giving
