Mega-marathon runners Dawn Parker

T
he idea of running for 11 to 12 hours in a race up steep hills and over winding trails — for a distance equivalent to a double marathon — would be unthinkable for most people, But Joe and Linda Pulver, both Mason residents, and well known local runners, are unlike most people. Joe is the managing director of the Clinton County Road Commission, and Linda works for a financial services firm in East Lansing. The couple traveled to Reichweiler in central Germany in late May for the 53-mile (85-kilometer) Keufelskopf Ultra-Trail Marathon. Their memories of the huge physical challenge are vivid. Linda was the first female finisher, coming in 15th overall in 10 hours, 33 minutes. Joe placed 47th overall in 11 hours 44 minutes for the 85 kilometer course. The couple went to Germany at the invitation of their friend Michael Becker, whose home village was the setting for the race. “He told us, ‘Come home with me, see Germany and run this race’,” Joe Pulver recalled. In addition to Becker – now an East Lansing resident who finished fourth overall – the American contingent included East Lansing resident Abby Eaton, who tied Joe for 47th overall in 11 hours 44 minutes. Lansing resident Dillon McCormick was 58th in 12 hours and two minutes. They arrived four days before the race, and a tour of a portion of the race course was intimidating. Linda Pulver recalled hiking a 5K section of the course that involved going straight up and

scrambling hand over hand, followed by long down-hills where competitors could run only with small steps. “I told Michael, ‘What did you get us into?’” Joe Pulver said with a laugh. Both Pulvers felt shortlived case of the jitters as they approached the starting line. “When you travel that far for a race, you have to make sure you can finish,” Linda Pulver said.
“I’ve never not finished a race, and I didn’t want this to be that one.” “I think it really went better than I expected and better than Linda expected. I think we were very strong at the end,” Joe Pulver added.

MASON – Homeowners in Mason’s Riverwalk Meadows subdivision have asked Mason officials if the city could do something about cars parking on the shoulders of nearby Howell Road. But road commission and Michigan State Police officials say a ban on parking is unnecessary. Neighborhood association representative Michael Waltz, who is also the city’s Mayor Pro-Tem, said homeowners were concerned about the number of cars parked along the busy road by people who have stopped to use the Hayhoe Riverwalk. The trail ends at Howell
Road after winding through Mason, but there is no parking lot in the area and the neighborhood begins further east. Waltz said high speeds on the road make it dangerous to both drive through and walk along the side of the road. “We had some questions as to what we could do and what the city could do to make a possible change,” Waltz said. Mason City Manager Martin Colburn told the city council at its July 5 meeting that the city contacted the Ingham County Road Commission and asked about the plausibility of having “no See SAFE, Page 10

cards, and a concealed pistol permit stolen from his unlocked car, but the pistol was not taken. Stolen items were recovered in the area, minus the cash, including a wallet taken at the Spartan Speedway earlier in the night. A suspicious person, described as a white male teenager, tall and skinny, with short blond hair and crooked yellow teeth, wearing a white tank top, blue and white plaid shorts, sandals and socks, was seen by a witness loitering about and acting suspiciously in the area the thefts occurred. The matter remains open. July 6 — An officer was dispatched to the 600 block of Hull Road on a tip regarding a suspect wanted on an outstanding Lansing Police arrest warrant charging malicious destruction of property. The suspect was located and arrested, then taken to a meeting point and turned over to a LPD officer. Peddlers were reported in the area of Avon and Columbia Streets. The officer located them and made telephone contact with their manager, who was directed to come pick his employees up and go to the City Clerk’s office to apply for the proper permits. A warning was issued in this instance. Property destruction to a motor vehicle was reported on High Point Drive where the victim stated the rear window of his car was smashed out. The damage to the car was noted by the officer, but the implement causing it was not located. There is no suspect at this time. July 7 — An officer was dispatched to Green Park Drive for a car parked in a handicap stall, occupied by kids who were smoking. He found the car, as described. The car had no handicap placard or license plate and was occupied by a female in the driver’s seat, a male in the front passenger seat, and another male lying down in the back seat. The driver claimed she did not see the handicap sign until the officer pointed it out to her. The interior of the car emanated with the pungent odor of burnt marijuana, and in spite of all three denying its use, marijuana and a mostly spent “blunt’ were located inside the car. All three were cited for marijuana use, and the driver was
cited for parking in a handicap zone. One of the three, who is on probation for a marijuana conviction, will be reported to 55th District Court Probation for violation of his probation terms. While patrolling, an officer found graffiti painted on the Maple Street Bridge over the Sycamore Creek and graffiti painted on a pavilion pole in Lee Austin Park. The Department of Public Works has been notified to implement a cleanup, and the matter remains open.
Attempted vehicle theft An attempted theft from a motor vehicle occurred overnight at the Kipp Road and US127 overpass construction site. The complainant reported arriving at work and noticing the rear doors of an equipment truck open. Investigation found the door lock had been defeated and entry gained. Although items were found to have been moved, an inventory revealed nothing had been taken. The case remains open. Vandalism was reported in the 300 block of East Columbia Street. The complainant stated that sometime overnight vandals sprayed ketchup on the white wicker chair and floor of her porch. Although the complainant had no suspects, and the damage was not permanent, she wanted to make a report because of past vandalism incidents. An officer was requested to stand by as a peace officer while a woman removed the license plate from a car she had sold and signed the title over to her daughter. The daughter had allegedly failed to register and insure the vehicle, improperly using the woman’s plate. The officer arrived to find the woman had already removed the plate. July 8 — The Department received a notice of a parole detainer from the Michigan Department of Corrections issued on a resident of a Curtis Street residential facility. An officer and a deputy responded and located the parolee, taking him into custody and lodging him in the Ingham County Jail. An officer responded to a traffic crash at State and Continued on next page
MASON POLICE CRIME REPORT Sycamore Streets where a single car struck a light pole, sheering it off. The officer found the driver outside the car, uninjured. The driver reported the vehicle was “squirrely,” stating as she turned the corner, she could not control the car and struck a sign (the light pole), then tried to pull in, but couldn’t.
Drunk driving arrest Investigation of the crash site and the driver’s .17 percent breath alcohol level led the officer to arrest the driver for operating while impaired. The vehicle—too damaged to drive— was towed from the scene, and the driver was taken to the Ingham County Jail and lodged. A 55th District Court probationer came to the Department for a court-ordered breath alcohol test. The officer submitted the test and obtained a .07 percent breath alcohol level result. The probationer was at first adamant that he had not been drinking, but when
challenged as to the veracity of his claims, he admitted to consuming beer up until just before midnight the night before and coming in for the test thinking that because he felt no effects of the alcohol, it had cleared out of his system. A copy of the report will be sent to his probation officer. He was released. July 10 — An officer was dispatched to a Mason residence where it was reported two juveniles were playing with fire. The officer arrived, could smell the strong odor of gasoline, and found the two hosing down the driveway with water. When asked what they were doing, they responded, “nothing,” despite the burn rings the officer witnessed on the driveway surface, evidence of where the gasoline was being ignited. The pair was turned over to their parents after being counseled on the dangers of playing with gasoline and fire. July 11 —A suspicious person was reported who had been picking through refuse in a
Mason neighborhood. The complainant reported this had been going on for some time, and the man originally had restricted his rummaging to refuse left on the curb for pickup, but now had begun to approach and inspect open garages, besides helping himself to items left in yards. The suspect is a white male in his mid-fifties, driving a white extended cab 1990 Ford pickup truck. The complainant asked for increased patrols to look for the suspect. A Mason business owner reported an abandoned bicycle on his property, left by a patron some weeks prior. The business owner stated the patron left a bicycle and his driver’s license as collateral for a meal he was unable to pay for. The patron was good to his word and returned and paid for half the amount owed, after which his collateral was returned. However, the patron had ridden the now abandoned bike to the business and left it after retrieving the first bicycle and

The officer informed the business owner that the patron was now serving a commitment to the Ingham County Sheriff after a courtimposed sentence, subsequent to a recent outburst during a 55th District Court appearance. As the cyclist was expected to be away for awhile, the bike was secured into MPD property until the owner could claim it.

Foreclosure fraud Special focus of meetings Breakfast 6AM - 11AM DAILY 2009, Hertel has been actively seeking to raise awareness in Ingham County of the many different types of property fraud that have been increasing throughout Michigan. In September of that year, he launched the Property Fraud Alert system, a free service to Ingham County residents, to notify them when any property documents containing their names were recorded in the county. In 2011, Hertel has launched a series of investigations into alleged foreclosure frauds that were perpetuated in Ingham County over the last decade. With the help of the Ingham County Commissioners, he has begun an aggressive campaign to obtain legal assistance for those who have been confirmed as victims. MASON — Ingham County Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel Jr. has announced a series of townhall meetings to be hosted throughout the county — including Holt and Lansing — to focus on foreclosure fraud in the county. The meetings will be staged at community centers and meeting halls in the various cities and townships of Ingham County, over the next three to four months, Hertel said in a press release issued last week. The first meeting on the schedule is planned for Tuesday, July 19 at 5:30 p.m. It will take place at the Cristo Rey Community Center, 1717 N. High St., Lansing. ‘We know that our fight against foreclosure fraud has raised a lot of questions from our citizens recently,” said Hertel. “We want to be able to get out and answer some of those questions in person.” Since taking office in

The state police wrote that there is “…no justification to establish a no parking zone in this area.” The report also recommended a parking lot or significant shoulder widening near the trail to accommodate trail users. The state police also reminded the commission that the only enforcement possible would be if any cars were parked on the bridge to the west of the trail, which is against the law, as well as any car

to Mason’s role as a local agricultural center. In 1886, John M. Dresser organized the Farmers Bank of Mason. He was its first cashier — at that time, a principal executive officer of a bank — and remained so until 1893. As the city evolved from a heavily rural area to a more suburban community, the bank adapted as well. In 1962, the board of
directors decided to change the name to Mason State Bank to better reflect its business. The bank now has about $124 million in assets, $86 million in loans and $82 million in deposits. It employs more than 40 people at four branches in Mason, Leslie and East Lansing. Mason State Bank is publicly traded and listed on the OTC Bulletin Board. Mason-based Capital

Christian rock band starts Courthouse Series MASON — Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to downtown Mason on Thursday evening, July 21, and enjoy the sounds of Faith 4, a local Christian rock band, in their first “Courthouse Concert” performance on the Ingham County Courthouse lawn. This free concert is hosted by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by St. James Catholic Church and the Mason Downtown Development Authority. The Chamber is in their seventh season of hosting “Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concerts,” a summer series of live musical entertainment presented by Independent Bank on select Thursday evenings. These free outdoor concerts take place at 6 p.m. on the west Ingham County
Courthouse lawn in downtown Mason. Remaining concerts are Aug. 11 and 25, and Sept. 15, all weather permitting. The Mason Optimist Club will be selling hot dogs, chips and pop nearby, so families can enjoy a picnic dinner during the concerts. Many concert-goers stop by restaurants and stores in Mason afterwards. Robin King-Fuller of Independent Bank, chair of the committee organizing the concerts, said that “the Chamber is hosting these concerts again as a way to bring more fun and excitement to downtown Mason.” She is happy that most of the past six years’ performers return for encore performances. “In addition, we’ve scheduled a couple of new
COME
groups this summer, like Faith 4, to add even more excitement.” Three weeks after the July 21 concert, on Thursday, Aug. 11, The Backwoods Band will have the stage, back for their seven- year. Mason’s Mayor Leon
Clark is part of that band. That concert is sponsored by Mason State Bank. For the Aug. 25 concert, sponsored by the Dart Container Corporation, the series will feature the second new addition to this year’s concert series line-up, with Twilight
Memories Big Band, a 17 piece community band. The entertainment series concludes with a concert by the Mason High School Band on Thursday, Sept. 15, led by Beth Bousfield, MHS Band Director. The Mason High School
Cheer Squad will join them in the program sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. This last concert will also mark the beginning of Mason’s “Down Home Days” festival. All concerts are weather permitting.
Dansville teen lands $8,000 scholarship DANSVILLE — Dansville High School graduate, Hannah Slabaugh, is one of 25 U.S. students to receive an $8,000 scholarship award from the Johnson Controls Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Johnson Controls, Inc. The scholarships are competitive and based on a combination of academic, leadership and civic achievements. A panel of
professional educators from public and private universities selects the recipients. Mark Slabaugh is a Johnson Controls employee. The scholarship will be applied toward tuition. Hannah plans to major in Forestry/Wildlife Ecology and Management at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. “We are pleased to
support these young people in their pursuit of higher education,” said Chuck Harvey, vice president of Diversity and Public Affairs for Johnson Controls. “Each recipient is truly outstanding and we wish both the students and their parents the best as they enter this new phase of life.” Each year, the Johnson Controls Foundation dis-
tributes more than $6 million in support of the arts, education, social services and the environment. In addition to the scholarship program for children of employees, the Johnson Controls Foundation supports education through donations to public and private higher education institutions, adult education programs, and educationrelated organizations.
