Training to tame fiery propane
Mason’s water, sewer rates low, survey says WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com
A sqaud of firefighters approach a propane fire as a team during Firefighter Propane Safety Training last Tuesday in Mason. The central team will come face to face with the leaky container and turn off the shut-off valve while two safety teams hit the fire from either side. The MichiganPropane Gas Association’s Emergency Response Team conducted a free state-certified accredited training program that includes classroom teaching and dramatic live-burn scenarios. KEVIN W. MASON — A survey of water and sewer costs to residents in the area helped Mason Mayor Leon Clark feel better. “We were getting some grumbling after we raised rates a month ago,” Clark said. “I’m glad we did this survey because it shows that our rates compare well with others.” The survey was submitted to the city council during its July 18 meeting. It compares Mason’s new rates with neighbors Delhi Township, Delta Township, Lansing, Charlotte, Williamston and Grand Ledge among others. The summary shows that

Mason’s average combined water and sewer bill for a 5,000 gallon user is lowest among other municipalities at about $50. Larger communities like Delta Township and Grand Ledge are in the $130 range while Williamston is near $160, according to the survey.
As the amount of water and sewer usage increases, the cost becomes a closer comparison to the other communities, the survey shows. Mason City Council approved a 6 percent increase in its water and See RATES, Page 8
Kerr Hardware to close, ending 47 years if its neighborly service WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com
MASON — Ivan Kerr was busy explaining to a customer that a penetrating lubricant might be needed in order to remove a rusty old bolt. He also recommended
giving the stuck bolt a “tap with a hammer” to loosen it. Kerr’s been making sure his customers have been taken care of for 47 years at Kerr Hardware, 222 S. Cedar Street in Mason. The store is having its first — and only — going
out of business sale, as Kerr said after all these years it was time to “let it go.” Indeed, the type of customer service at the “neighborhood hardware store” was being done at Kerr’s well before it was turned See KERR, Page 6

MASON POLICE CRIME REPORT By John Stressman Chief of Police
Between July 12th and July 18th Mason police investigated 52 reported incidents involving a variety of activities—both criminal and noncriminal. These are some of those incidents worth noting and intended to keep our citizens informed of Department activities. July 12 - An officer was dispatched to a loud music complaint after midnight. The caller told the dispatcher the source was coming from a garage where a car was being worked on. The officer did not hear the music until he got inside the garage to talk with the occupant who was exercising. The occupant denied being loud, and the officer suggested that the time of night and the neighbors be considered, but agreed he did not witness any violations of the peace. The matter is closed. Officers were sent to the residential home on Curtis Street where a resident was found to be wanted on an outstanding felony warrant held by Lansing Police. The suspect was located, arrested, and turned over to LPD. • The Department received a criminal sexual conduct first degree complaint through the Michigan Department of Human Services. The allegations involve youthful offenders and the use of internet pornography. No further details will be released at this time. • An officer was dispatched to an identity theft complaint at the residential facility on Kerns Road. The complainant, a resident, was reporting her mother used her identity to obtain cable services at the mother’s residence
in Grand Rapids. The complainant said she did not open the account, nor had she ever lived with her mother. The complainant reported the fraud to Comcast and was told she must have a police report completed and submit the incident number with her claim. Although the crime occurred in Grand Rapids, the officer completed a short report as a courtesy, and the matter is closed. July 13 - An officer was called to do a security check on a suspicious situation. The complainant reported her neighbor’s van door was standing open behind the residence and she could not find anyone at home. The officer inspected and found no obvious indicators of an intrusion or theft, as everything was packed neatly inside as if someone was preparing for a trip. When the officer tried to secure the door, the latch failed numerous times, causing suspicion this might be why the door was standing open. July 14 - Officers were dispatched to a Mason residence where it was alleged an assailant had assaulted a relative with a stick—striking the victim in the stomach. On the scene, the officers were told the suspect had left prior to their arrival to return home. They located him
at the second address. Investigation found the suspect became upset after the victim’s wife called him on the phone and accused him of stealing an item from her home. The suspect reportedly went to the house and confronted the victim, threatening to strike the victim with a stick he was carrying. The victim reported telling the suspect to “bring it on,” which he did, once to the abdomen. The suspect then fled, discarding the weapon in a dumpster he walked past. A further report was made at the suspect’s home where the suspect was alleged to have thrown a bottle of water through a window screen, narrowly missing a person walking past the window. In the end, no one wished to prosecute, and the matter was closed. The code enforcement officer opened nuisance complaints for tall grass in the 100 block of North Jefferson, a vacant house; a blight condition caused by a pile of decomposing straw in the 400 block of North Street; and a brush pile in the 400 block of West Ash Street.;with the goal of gaining voluntary compliance with nuisance abatement. • A malicious destruction of property was reported at Beacon Lake. The victim

the suspect, treating him with appropriate caution until it was determined he did not have a knife. The victim reported she was in bed when her live-in boyfriend entered the room demanding to know where his medications were, simultaneously lifting up the mattress and dumping the victim onto the floor. The victim stated she denied knowing the whereabouts of his medication, resulting in the suspect striking her in the head. The victim also stated she left the house and called the police, now claiming the suspect had a box cutter but not knowing what he had done with it; however, adding the suspect followed her in his car until he abandoned it and followed on foot. Officers located the car near Bond Park, finding the suspect’s knife lying on the ground near by. The victim, who had obvious injuries, declined medical treatment. The suspect was arrested and taken to the Ingham County Jail, where he was lodged. The next day, the Ingham County Prosecutor issued charges of Domestic Assault with a Second Offense notice. • The code enforcement officer opened a nuisance code inves-

The victim reported seeing a white male in his early teens, with a thin build and short hair, hanging about the area, but did not know who he was. July 15 - An officer traveling northbound on Jefferson Street near Lansing happened upon a southbound vehicle traveling without the headlights on well after dusk. Investigation revealed the driver was 15 years old and had never applied for a driver’s license, and the passenger was wanted by Meridian Township for failing to comply with sentencing on a malicious destruction of property charge. The passenger was arrested and taken to the Ingham County Jail where he was lodged. The passenger was cited for driving without a license and turned over, along with the car, to his mother. • Officers were dispatched to an assault complaint; the dispatcher reporting the suspect had a pocket knife and was following the victim near Jefferson and Okemos. MASON POLICE CRIME REPORT Continued from previous page subsequent to a group get together in Hayes Park. The matter remains open. July 16 - An officer came upon a couple appearing to have car trouble in a parking lot to an automotive repair service, which was closed for the weekend. The couple reported the car engine could not be shut down, as the ignition key was stuck into the engine “on” position. The officer reviewed the car’s owner manual and located the fuse for the gas pump, which he removed, causing the car to shut down. July 17 - An officer was dispatched to a domestic assault that had just occurred, as reported by an uninvolved witness. The complainant reported seeing the suspect and victim in a driveway and thought there was slapping and striking going on between the pair. The complainant stated the driver—the suspect—got out of a car, walked around to the passenger door, opened it, and extracted the passenger by lifting her out of the seat, then dropping her onto the ground. The driver then reportedly reentered the car and
drove off. The officer found the alleged victim talking on her cell phone. She reported that while she was sitting inside the car that was parked in her driveway, she argued with her boyfriend, during which she backhanded him in the chest and took his sunglasses. She stated that after she refused to get out of the car, her boyfriend went around to her side, opened the door and pulled her legs out, then gently put her on the ground. The boyfriend’s account, when he was interviewed later, was relatively the same. No one reported being injured and both were separated by there own volition. July 18 - An officer responded to a trouble with a juvenile report where the complainant claimed her juvenile charge would not get into her car after visiting his relative’s home. The complainant said she was picking the child up to prepare for a courtordered custody hearing involving him the next day. The officer reported that while interviewing those involved, an unknown woman approached and began an argument with the complainant. The officer pointed out the inappropriateness of the newcomer’s actions and suggested
she leave, after which she complied. The officer then cajoled the juvenile into leaving with the complainant, his custodial guardian. • An officer was dispatched to check the welfare of two unattended, small children playing outside a residence. One was reported in need of a diaper change. The officer located the children, approximately two and three years old respectively, as described by the caller. The officer sought out and located the residence where the pair belonged, finding a door ajar. When the officer called out to the resident, a four year old answered. Checking further, the officer found an adult, the mother, inside sleeping. Mother stated she got home from work at 5:30 A.M. and went to sleep because her mother was there with the children. She assured the officer this would not happen again. But the officer warned her he would monitor the situation and report it to appropriate agencies if the incident was repeated. • Officers were dispatched to a Mason home where a domestic assault was reported just to have occurred. The complainant
and victim stated the suspect became upset because her online, long-distance boyfriend had just terminated their connection because the suspect had responded to the complainant’s greetings upon his arrival home from work. The complainant reported it was after this that the victim arrived home, and the suspect became more upset because the victim failed to immediately show her empathy for her distress. During the unfolding of events, the complainant reported having had to shut himself in a room to avoid the suspect’s attempts to attack him and hearing pleas from the victim that the suspect not hurt her. The victim was alleged to have been pushed onto the floor by the suspect and slapped, knocking her glasses off. Neither the victim nor complainant were interested in prosecution. Officers transported the suspect to an area facility for evaluation.

Mason may get a new league foe, after the Capital Area Activities Conference has taken the initial steps toward admitting a
new member, Parma Jackson County Western, beginning in the 2012-13 school year. This school year will be Mason’s first in the Gold, in a newly realigned CAAC. Previously, the Bulldogs
competed in the CAAC Red and the CAAC II since the formation of the league in 2003. If given final approval, Western will join the Bulldogs’ CAAC Gold division, which features local rivals
Jackson Northwest and Jackson Lumen Christi as well as Waverly, Eaton Rapids and Charlotte. Mason athletic director and outgoing CAAC president Greg Lattig said that the process for expanding
the league is not finished. “The (athletic directors) approved the admittance in their June meeting, but there are still some things to work out,” Lattig said. Lattig said that school administrators will likely
take up the matter and make a final decision at their league meeting on August 17. Western joins the CAAC from the Southern Michigan Activities Association.
