Kean’s Princess Party was fun for all First-time event is hugely popular and will continue Will Kangas

MASON — As 64 young girls marched through downtown Mason with hands waving and colorful dresses shining in the sunlight, Kean’s store owner Theresa Wren thought to herself that she must do this every year. Kean’s hosted a “Princess Party” on July 23 for girls — complete with face painting, nail polishing and a noon tea party. Wren said she had heard about the idea while at the same time thinking about some fun summer promotions for the store. “We wanted to think of something fun to do as well as maybe earn some new business from people that haven’t been here before,” Wren said.

Be careful what you wish for. Not only did the event quickly “sell out,” with more than the proposed 60 princess registrations, but Kean’s had to keep it a semisecret until July 23 for fear of having to turn people away. “With parents, we had 150 people in our room downstairs for the tea party,” she said. At the tea party, the girls learned about princess etiquette, including learning the correct way to do the a princess wave to fans. The wave came in handy as the girls marched from Kean’s to Ware’s drug store, proudly waving to onlookers as they tra-

To help make the party even more special, two Mason women dressed up and were in full costume as two popular characters. Kean’s co-worker Meghan Harrison came as “Cinderella,” and local actress Olivia Hayhoe came as “Belle” from “Beauty and the Beast.” Wren said Hayhoe organized the event and took it very seriously, as she has always wanted to be an actress and will

be attending the University of Central Florida in the fall. “They were both amazing,” Wren said. “The little girls were in awe.” Kean’s has always hosted special events and in-store promotions, but Wren said this one will probably become a permanent event every year. “What was really great was how well-behaved the girls were as well,” she said. “This will be a yearly event for sure.”

ALAIEDON TWP. – A bridge that served as an important connection to the east side of the township has been repaired after being closed for two years. The bridge over Sycamore Creek at Willoughby Road was closed in 2009 due to support column deterioration. The bridge was deemed unsafe to handle weight and was closed, then construction started this March once funds became available. “This is good news for folks on the east side of the bridge as they depend upon Delhi Township for fire and ambulance service,” Ingham County Commissioner Steve Dougan said. Delhi Township emergency personnel would have to detour further north to Jolly or south to Holt Road to get to the east side. Delhi Township Asst. Fire Chief Pat Brown said at the time of construction that he was happy nothing serious had happened that would require a faster response time. The Ingham County Road Commission was able to complete this project at a cost of $715,000, with funding from the state and federally-funded Local Bridge Program.

Mason woman admits stealing from union Kevin Grasha kgrasha@lsj.com

GRAND RAPIDS — A former administrative assistant for a Lansing-area union has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison and ordered to pay back the more than $400,000 she

embezzled. April Franklin, 35, of Mason, has admitted stealing a total of about $371,000 between 2003 and 2009 from an apprenticeship and training fund held by Lansing’s Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 333, officials said. She also admitted pock-

“The damage I have caused the (union) and the disappointment in myself are the first thoughts when I wake in the morning,” she wrote. “I will, no doubt, spend the rest of my life regretting these actions.” Officials said Franklin issued checks to herself to

pay for personal expenses and her monthly credit card bill. She falsified the union’s accounting records to hide the thefts from co-workers and the union’s auditor, officials said. According to a news release, U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney noted in hand-

ing down the sentence the thefts hurt the union financially, and it was not able to pay certain death benefits to members’ families. Union officials were not available for comment. A telephone number for Franklin has been disconnected.

Chamber readies for annual fall raffle event MASON — For the 10th year in a row, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) will hold its community raffle, with the drawing party this year on Thursday, Oct. 13. The party will begin at 5 p.m. with the top prize drawing at 8 p.m. at the VFW Post 7309 Hall, 1243 Hull Road, south of Mason. A grand prize of up to $15,000 cash will go to the lucky holder of the winning $20 ticket in the “Mason — It’s a Wonderful Life” MACC raffle (ML No. R11409). Tickets are available from chamber volunteers throughout the Mason community. Remaining MACC raffle tickets are also available while they last at the chamber office, which is at 148 E. Ash St., downtown Mason, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Net proceeds of the raffle, sponsored by LAFCU, will benefit the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Hometown USA” fund for community identity and improvement programs, which create so much value for the commu-

nity. The fund provides new street lamp Christmas decorations for N. Cedar St. at the northwest entrance to Mason off U.S. 127. If at least 1,500 of the 2,000 available tickets are sold, the prize will be $15,000 maximum. If less than 1,500 are sold in advance of the drawing, the raffle reverts to a “50/50 basis,” with a minimum prize of $3,000. As always, applicable taxes are the responsibility of the winner. You need not be present to win. The party is themed as “Mason — It’s a Wonderful Life” and the doors open at 5 p.m. for cash bar and snacks. Dinner will not be provided, but free hot hors d’oeuvres, snacks and soft drinks will be served. A cash bar will be available. Entertainment will be provided by a jazz combo, a Charleston dance contest, the in-house bonus raffles for regular $20 MACC raffle tickets, drawings for door prizes and chances on special $10 and $5 “50/50” boards offered between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Dougan said the nearly two year wait for the bridge repair was “sadly” fast for this kind of project. He said in the years he has been commissioner, this is the fifth bridge replacement over Sycamore Creek, counting bridges at Col-

lege Road, Pine Tree Road, Harper Road and Howell Road. “This is also good news for the Mason school bus drivers who couldn’t make a turnaround,” Dougan said. The bridge is east of College Road, which is the border between Delhi and Alaiedon Township, and is one of the east-west roads that passes under U.S. 127 and connects with Hagadorn Road.

In a time of dwindling tax revenues, Michigan school districts, counties and cities face increasing pressure to save every nickel and dime they can. Robert Sheehan, executive director of the Community Mental Health Authority of Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties, believes his agency’s success at saving millions of dollars annually by finding new efficiencies could serve as a model to other cash-starved entities. Done in partnership with four other mental health authorities, those innovations include transitioning paper medical records to computerized documents, replacing outdated copiers and

printers and switching to energy-efficient light bulbs. The Community Mental Health Authority’s newly released report concluded that since 2002 the effort has saved the authority more than $2 million annually from its $100 million operating budget. The authority examined its cost-saving strategies in partnership with mental health authorities in Benzie, Gratiot, Ionia, Manistee and Newaygo counties. In addition, the effort has helped the mental health authorities avoid $4.6 million in expenditures since 2002, according to the report.

Impact on services Because of stagnant county,

state and federal funding, the tri-county authority has seen a reduction in services for mental health clients over the past decade. But the impact on services would have been more profound without the cost savings, Sheehan said. The authority now serves nearly 10,000 clients annually, offering help to those with mental illness, developmental disabilities, substance abuse disorders and children with serious emotional disturbances. “We were kind of surprised by the report. I was shocked by what we had done,” said Sheehan, explaining the authority wanted to track the savings over several years. “It would be

Energetic dancers to perform for community OKEMOS — In its start-up season, the Community Dance Project involved four choreographers and eight dancers. Now, six years later, 16 choreographers and 42 dancers will bring their infectious energy to five shows, four dates and three locations, with two different dance programs. And dance fans can afford to attend them all because zero is still the cost of admission — although donations are welcome. Program A is comprised of dances with smaller casts (1-5 dancers) and includes works by Clara Martinez, a dance major at Ohio State University (recently ranked the No. 1 dance program in the country); Okemos High School junior Grace French and Lea-Janell Mitchell, who this fall will attend the prestigious Hartt Conservatory for Dance. Program B offers works with at least five dancers, up to the largest dance. Among the pieces: First-time choreographer Katherine McKin-

ney fuses hip-hop, modern and classical styles of dance, set to the unlikely musical pairing of Eminem and Leanne Womak. Professional choreographer Tracy Holtzer launches “Everybody Dance Now,” with 19 dancers performing to music of Michael Buble’ and J-Lo. Program A’s smaller cast fits well at (SCENE) MetroSpace in East Lansing on Friday, Aug. 5, with back-to-back shows at 7 and 8 p.m. The next day at 2 p.m., Program B fills a large outdoor stage at the Lansing JazzFest in Old Town (details at www.jazzlansing. com). These are tough economic times, and loss of grant funding threatened to cancel this year’s CD Project. CDP performs under the direction of Missy Lilje, with the support of Happendance and Lansing Community College Its mission is to give beginning dancers and choreographers a chance to gain performance

The American Red Cross has consolidated its area operations and laid off local employees in an effort to cut costs. The agency’s Central Lower Michigan Region that covers 15 counties — including Ingham, Eaton and Clinton — is merging

with the Flint Region. The combined agency will be based in Lansing. Twelve employees were laid off between the two regions, bringing their fulltime staff to 57, said Alison Bono, a spokeswoman at the Lansing office. The new group, called Central and Northern Michigan Region, will serve 51 counties spanning most of

the state. Southeast and western Michigan will have their own agencies. The new region includes more than 1,000 disaster volunteers who can aid families impacted by fires and other emergencies. The nonprofit Red Cross cut 1 percent of its staff nationwide after a nearly 30 percent drop in donations and a slew of natural disas-

It also hopes to sell more automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to organizations and businesses and train people to use the firstaid devices. “We’re just regrouping and trying to work with what we have,” Bono said. “I hope in three years we’ll see it was a good change and it worked out for the best.”

157th Annual Ingham County Fair

Everyday at the Fair Enjoy

Music returns to the grandstand this year Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com

MASON – There will be a bunch of new entertainment at the Ingham County Fair this year, according to fair officials, along with the usual brand of fun that the event has been bringing for 157 years. Ingham County Fair Interim Executive Director Carol Carlson said musical acts will return to the grandstand, including alternative rockers “Sick Puppies” on Aug. 3, local band “Root Doctor” on Aug. 4 and country duo “Steel Magnolia” on Aug. 5, which will be “Country Music” night. “Both are highly regarded up and coming musical acts,” Carlson said. “They are inexpensive as well, which helps.” Years ago fair officials quit bringing in musical acts to the grandstand because they were considered too cost-prohibitive. But Carlson said county commissioners told her the community wanted to bring back the music, and so a

new pricing schedule was created to appease both regular fair goers and diehard fans of the groups. Carlson said a general admission seat at the concerts are open to everyone who pays the fair’s overall gate price, which is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Those that want to get closer to the bands can pay an extra $5 for a reserved seat. Carlson said this way everyone who comes to the fair can see the bands for the price of admission to the fair instead of having to pay extra.

World”, which peaked at #20. The band also released “Pitiful” and “What Are You Looking For“ as singles in 2008.

Sick Puppies

Steel Magnolia

“Sick Puppies” are a indie rock band from Australia that came into prominence in 2006 when there song “All the Same” reached number eight on the U.S. Modern Rock chart and is also featured on the video for the “Free Hugs Campaign” video which won YouTube video of the year in 2006. They followed up their debut with the single “My

After becoming the top winner on the show, the duo released its debut single “Keep On Lovin’ You“ in August 2009, which was a Top 10 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs

Root Doctor “Root Doctor” is a popular Lansing band that plays a diverse mix of classic soul and R&B, alongside traditional blues and inspired original material. Root Doctor’s latest CD, Change Our Ways, was nominated for a Blues Music Award (formerly the WC Handy Awards) for Soul/Blues Album Of The Year in 2007.

chart. Carlson said local country band “Bullwhip” will be opening for Steel Magnolia. “They are so excited,” she said. “They can’t believe they are opening for such a great talent.” Carlson said also new this year will be the Potter Park Zoo’s Exotic Animals exhibit. The zoo used to be a city park, but changed

to an Ingham County Park a few years ago. Because of this special relationship with the county, the zoo will be offering a “hands-on” exotic animal exhibit.

Mark Maze She said entertainer Mark Maze will be “roaming the midway” and entertaining at the Shirley Clark Pavilion. Maze walks around and does magic

tricks, hypnosis and other fun stuff, she said. And as usual, the fair will have Erbeck Brothers rides and concessions, and Meijer Kids Day will be Aug. 2 – kids can get in free with a paid adult admission. Carlson said the idea was to have events for everyone, and she said she hopes people will come out to have a fun day at the fair.
